Video Transcript for MaxxTow Hitch Receiver Lock Review

Hey, everybody, how's it going, Ryan here at etrailer. Today, we're gonna be checking out the MaxxTow trailer hitch lock. So nowadays these hitch-mounted accessories are really nice. The quality of them just continue to improve. And that's really true for all accessories, whether it'll be a ball mount, a bike rack, cargo carrier, and so on. Well, the problem is people notice that, they notice it on the back of your vehicle.

And nothing's really stopping them from running off with it. It don't really take any time at all. If you just we're to use a standard hitch pin and clip, pull it out, they can take your accessory, and now it's long gone. Well, you can resolve that issue and not have to worry about it. Keep your investment protected by using a locking hitch pin like this.

So what this is gotta do is secure that accessory to your vehicle. So all you're gonna have to do is remove the lock portion, take the hitch pin itself, slide it through the accessory, whether it'll be a ball mount, bike rack, whatever the case may be, and then re-install the lock portion. So all you're gonna do, push that in place, it's locked not going anywhere, and close up your dust cover. So one thing that's really nice about this locking hitch pin is it's gonna work with pretty much any vehicle. It's designed to work with those two inch by two inch hitches, like we have here today.

And it's also gonna have that five inch pin diameter. So that's a super common size. And if your vehicle has that two inch by two inch hitch, chances are really good this setup's going to work with it. One thing I did notice is that it's gonna sit up nice and tight against your hitch whenever you have it installed here. There's a little bit of movement there, but honestly I prefer that, probably makes it easier to actually get on in the first place.

But by having such little space there if someone we're want to try to remove this, it'd be really difficult. I feel like there's pretty much no way you could get a pair of bolt cutters or something like that in there, maybe some type of saw blade, but if someone really wanted to get after it, it would be extremely difficult. This pin is made from a carbon steel so it's super solid. Carbon steel is extremely strong, so even if you we're to get some type of tool in there you'd really have to put a lot of effort into it. And to be honest, if someone's up to no good, trying to take something off of your vehicle, they're probably not willing to exert that much time and energy, make all that noise just to get this off to run away with your accessory. So I've had experience with quite a few of these locking type hitch pins, and one of the things that I'm kind of fond of is how easy it is use. So to unlock it you're just gonna take your key, and it's super smooth, the mechanism, you're just gonna have to rotate it about a quarter turn, the key will stop and you can separate the two. Whenever you go to put it in what you can do is leave the key in it, put it on there and kind of hold it in place, rotate that key a quarter turn and lock it that way. Sometimes that can be a little tricky whenever you don't have, when it's actually on your vehicle, you don't have a ton of space, whatever. So what I found makes it a little easier. Let's say when you unlock it, which you can actually do is with the lock separated, rotate that key back, pull it out, that way when you plug it in it's already locked. So that way you can lock it in your hand, snap and dauber down there by your hitch, and when you plug this in just snap the two together and everything will be secure. So one of the things a lot of our customers said they like, and I'd have to agree with them, is the fact that this has a black finish, not a huge deal, but honestly, I think it looks a little more modern, and kind of blends in a little bit better. I know a lot of the other hitch pins kind of have a chrome look to them, and if that's your style, great. I will say with the chrome, after a while, even though they do have a protected type finish on it, after a while, once it starts kind of pitting you really notice that rust. And I don't really think that'll be the case nearly as much with this black one here. It will just kind of hide everything a little better. This actually has an e-coat finish is what they call it. And so I think it'll stay in pretty good shape I don't think it'll get banged up too easily, or scratched up, or rusted all that quick. So there is a ton of locking hitch pins available out there. And so I figured I'd grab one just to kind of compare it to the MaxxTow. And I grabbed the etrailer locking hitch pin. A great product and it sound right. I don't think I'd feel any different, between either one as far as the security goes. So really it would just come down to how you want it to look and kind of the ease of use. I will say the etrailer one here to get the lock off, you're gonna have a key and it's not gonna be a quarter-turn like our MaxxTow. So this one you're actually gonna have to physically kind of unscrew it all the way to get it off. And same thing when you put it on, you have to put it on there and tighten it all the way down. Not really a huge deal especially if you're someone that pretty much leaves your accessory on all the time or have a lot of room to work. I feel like if you we're constantly changing ball mounts, or accessories, putting a cover in there, whatever the case may be, I feel like the quarter-turn one might be a little more convenient just 'cause you're not gonna have to obviously unscrew it, and screw it back on every time that you wanna change accessories. So with that said, there's gonna be a lot of different locking hitch pins that have a little bit different locking mechanisms. And so at the end of the day the one that's best for you is the one that you think is gonna be the easiest to use and live with. So there is one thing I kind of do worry about when using these locking type hitch pins and that's after a couple of years of use out in the weather is the locking mechanism actually seizing up. And I think this is a pretty good design actually. The little dust cover here is thick and actually fits tight over that, to keep any of that weather out of there. And I feel like this type of locking mechanism with a key like this as opposed to like a slotted key, I feel like that'd just be less likely to get seized up or anything. There's really not a ton of space there for anything to accumulate, and even if so I feel like when you put this type of key in, it would push it out of there and still work. And same goes for the backside of it too, everything is nice and tight. They put a O-ring on the pin side here, and so when you pair these two together and lock it down, if I try to move it you get a little bit of movement, but honestly I can feel it just pushing against that O-ring. So that should do a pretty good job of keeping everything contained and all the elements out of the lock mechanism. So now I just wanted to kind of give another example of how this is gonna work on a different vehicle. Some vehicles don't have a hitch that is easily accessible especially a lot of these newer late model SUVs have kind of a hidden panel that you can remove and expose your hitch. And so a lot of times you don't have a ton of room to work and it's kind of tucked back a little bit. So one thing you need to think about if that's your case, is are you gonna have enough room to get everything in there locked into place and be able to get the key in and unlock it So in our case here, it's a little tight to get it in. But, we're still able to do so. And so now if you see what I'm saying, if the panel say we're to end right here probably it would be difficult to get in here and take it apart. So what I did is locked it in. And if I put the key in just in a resting position, I measured from end to end there. And that's gonna be seven and one quarter of an inch. So something definitely to think about to make sure it'll work with your particular vehicle. And what I've ran into in the past before as well, and this is kind of an okay example, this actually is, with the larger locking hitch pin there, it might kind of hinder the access to our safety chain openings. So if you've got a bigger hook or something, it might be difficult to get that on. Or one thing you can do to kind of combat that is use a D-Ring like this. So this has gonna fit in there pretty much every time, you can put that over your safety chain opening and lock it down. And you can leave these on your vehicle or take them off, put them on the ends of your safety chains if there is an issue there. And by doing that, it's gonna clear that hitch pin and allow you to hook up your chain. So something I just wanted to mention, and it's not gonna apply to everyone, but for those of you that it does apply to, it's definitely worth keeping in mind. And there is another measurement I just wanted to mention. The overall span, so from inside to inside here, it's gonna be about two and three quarters of an inch. And we kind of talked about that earlier, that measurement, what that's gonna mean is it's gonna sit nice and tight against both sides of the hitch, that way you don't have the room in there to be able to tamper with it. And it's also going to pretty much work with just about every two inch by two inch hitch. So it come with a couple of keys that way you got a spare. So you maybe throw it on your key ring, maybe pop the other one in the glove box or something for safekeeping if you do happen to lose your other one. And honestly, just at the end of the day, whether you're trying to lock down and secure a ball mount, maybe a hitch cover, bike rack, cargo carrier, whatever the case may be it's a gonna give you a little more peace of mind and help you sleep at night. And that'll finish up our look of the MaxxTow trailer hitch lock..

This was exactly what i was looking for. I just got a new truck and I but a nice US Flag receiver hitch cap. The thing looked awesome but was pretty cheap off amazon. I use a simple cotter key hitch lug and within a couple days it was stolen. I looked online and found this item which turned out to be just the ticket. Shipping was fast and this locking hitch lug is secure and perfect for my needs.

The lock itself I really cant say good or bad as I have no experience with these, although the locking end seems a little wobbly when locked, for some reason I just expect a really snug fit when attached, time will tell. The etrailer service was great, fast shipping & updates every step.

can be locked on without use of key

Used one of these in a standard 2" receiver. the lock worked well. My other lock is a very tight fit and does not have any play when you lock it. These have a little bit of play. Wish they were tighter when you lock them in place. Thus I am taking a star off.

It looks better than in the pictures or the video.

Quality built and nice color. Great price too. Only issue is that it does not fit my 2 in by 2 in tow hitch receiver. It's about a few millimeters short and doesn't have enough length to lock. So basically it can't lock.
