Video Transcript for Curt Long Shank Hitch Ball Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at Curt's 2-5/16-inch hitch ball with a 1-1/4-inch diameter shank. Part number C40030.This is what our hitch ball's going to look like when it's installed. It's a 2-5/16th-inch ball, so it will work with any trailers that have a 2-5/16th-inch coupler. If your trailer has a different size, you can find various size ball mounts here at etrailer.com.This ball's a 15,000-pound weight rating, but you want to keep in mind that the lowest weight rating of any of your components will be your maximum. If your ball mount or your hitch had a lower weight rating, you wouldn't want to exceed whatever the lowest was. It's an all-steel construction with a chrome finish, so it's going to be strong, durable, and rust-resistant.The shank on our ball is 1-1/4-inch diameter. When mounting it in your ball mount, you want to make sure your ball mount has the same size hole in it to match your ball.

The length of our shank is 2-5/8 inches, so you want to make sure that when it's installed, there are at least a thread sticking out the bottom so that the nut is completely on. With this length, you may be able to install some accessories on it, such as a anti-sway bar or a camper.Brophy makes a 2-inch hitch ball with a 1-1/4-inch diameter shank. However, this ball is only 7,500 pounds and has a 2-1/4-inch shank. Our Curt here has not only a higher weight rating, but a slightly longer shank, so it'll be a little bit more useful with more accessories and it'll have higher towing capacities. Now, I'm going to show you how to get it installed on your ball mount. We've got an older unit here, so as not to mar up a brand new unit.

You'll want to install it in a vice, as this does torque to a very high foot pounds. You'll set your ball mount on it in whatever position you'd like. We've got a drop or rise here. We're going to be putting it in the drop position. After you've got your mount on, you'll slide on the washer, followed by the nut.

We're going to use a 1-7/8-inch socket for this ball here. Same procedures are going to be similar for this ball mount as in any other ball mount, although your socket size and torque spec may vary. We'll then just torque it to its specifications. We can now take it out of the vice, and we're ready to put it in our hitch. If you don't have a bench vice to hold your ball, you can put an adjustable wrench on it, slide it into your hitch receiver, and that we'll just butt up against the side of it. Depending on your ball mount, it may vary if it would hit there, so what you can do is you can also turn it sideways and have that wrench swing up and hit on your receiver.

You'll have your wrench on the ball mount side and your torque wrench on the nut side to tighten it down. That completes our look at Curt's 2-5/16-inch hitch ball with a 1-1/4-inch diameter shank.

It's a ball... But a nice one. Want real reviews? Ask me in three months what I think. Not the day after I got it... Service from eTrailer was aok. Fortunately UPS lets us upgrade shipping from USPS delivery to UPS straight through. The ball appears to have heavy chrome. That will be a plus! 140536

Great product! I got it because of the high end specs. I have a equipment and a dump trailer. Never have to worry about exceeding the GVW and TW of that ball! Peace of mind is great...Best regards,

The Reese weight distribution hitch would likely work fine for a trailer somewhere between 20-28 feet. Been towing for years, and find it does distribute the weight nicely onto the truck. However, with a long trailer (I am towing a 36 foot Rockwood with the weight of 3 large slides), you're going to have highway speed sway every time. There is just no two ways about this. Dialing it in precisely, new shocks, new tires, new truck - 3/4 ton to a one ton, is not going to fix it. The passing semi trucks will get you side to side if traveling at 50 mph or more, and it is uncontrollable at times. If you go with this hitch, you will be avoiding highways like the plague, trying to make sure you don't lose your trailer and more. Just spend the extra money and get a Hensley or Pro Pride hitch. They are the only hitches that work for weight distribution AND sway elimination on long trailers. If those are too pricey, seriously think twice about purchasing a long trailer - you will never have the same issues with a fifth wheel. 732671

Bought this hitch to use on a Jayco toy hauler at a dealers recommendation who sold several different types of load distribution/stabilizer products. Worked great so I bought another one for our new North Trail which is same size but 1/2 the weight. Only this time I installed it myself. Support from etrailer was excellent. They know their product. I actually ordered the wrong weight bars, and another part was missing and we had a trip scheduled! They got us the parts ASAP and we were ready to go with time to spare. One point of caution: When installing the ball, it requires 400 lbs of torque. I took this to a truck repair shop and did it for me free in just a minute. 802047

I own a 31ft Cabin Cruiser boat that weighs around 10,000lbs and the trailer itself weighs over 2000lbs. Every time I would pull the boat out of the water the back of my truck would squat a little and the trailer jack would occasionally scrape the ground. So I purchased this Hitch Ball and mounted it upside down so that the ball is higher than the bumper of the truck and now the trailer is level when cruising down the interstate fully loaded. This Hitch ball is very heavy and completlely solid! I dont hear any noises coming from the hitch at all. Etrailer had the best price around and will always contine shopping with them anytime I need any trailer parts 737420

  • Will Powerbuilt 1-7/8-Inch Thin-Wall Socket ALL643216 Fit 1-7/8-Inch Nut on Reese Hitch Ball
Powerbuilt 1-7/8-Inch Thin-Walled Socket # ALL643216 fits a 3/4-inch drive and is suitable when tight spaces mean not enough clearance for a wrench or standard socket. You can use this with any torque wrench that has a 3/4-inch drive and the torque range you need for the specific item you are installing.

  • Recommended Torque Specification for Curt 2-5/16-Inch Hitch Ball # C40030
Thank you for your purchases from etrailer. I do not see a Curt hitch ball among them but just the same I checked with my technical contact at Curt Manufacturing to confirm the correct torque spec for their 2-5/16-Inch Hitch Ball # C40030. It is indeed 450-ft-lbs which is definitely on the higher side. Our installers here do not have torque wrenches rated up to that spec; typically up to 250-ft-lbs. My contact at Curt said you'd find them only at a specialty tool shop. But you are correct...

  • What Size Wrenches are Used to Tighten the Curt Hitch Ball Part # C40030
Yes, I went out into our warehouse to measure the nut of the Trailer Hitch Ball # C40030 and found that a 1-7/8 inch wrench would be the correct size. The same size wrench would be used for the top portion of the ball as well.

  • What is the Country of Origin for Curt Trailer Hitch Ball # C40030
The Curt trailer hitch balls are all made in China. Many trailer hitch receivers too are made outside the U.S. but Curt does manufacture their hitches stateside. The 2-5/16-inch hitch ball you referenced, Curt # C40030, has a 15K gross trailer weight capacity. For a comparably-rated 2-5/16-inch chrome-plated ball that is made here in the U.S. you can use B&W part # BWHB94004. This is rated for 30,000-lbs. Its shank is 1-1/4-inches in diameter and 2-1/2-inches long.

  • Hitch Ball Recommendation that is 2-5/16 Diameter with 1-1/4 inch Diameter Shank
Sounds like you are looking for a 2-5/16 inch diameter hitch ball with a 15k capacity that has a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank. For a hitch ball that fits your criteria exactly you would want the part # C40030. If your ball hole is .03 larger than the diameter of the hitch ball you install into it you would be totally fine.

I attached an install video that shows this hitch being installed on a 2015 Silverado 3500 like yours as well. This hitch also doubles as a fifth wheel hitch rail kit too. If you ever needed to tow a fifth wheel trailer you would only need the Companion part # BWRVK3500.

Curt does not specify bracket placement for MV weight distribution systems however, the bars measure 30-5/8" long. The two Curt systems you mention also have a tongue weight range of 800 lbs-1,000 lbs which is very overrated for your setup with a 450 lb tongue weight. The BlueOx SwayPro # BXW1506 is a good system but I recommend the Reese Strait-Line # RP66130 over it. While both systems will be less noisy than the Equal-i-zer you referred to, the Strait-Line has the advantage because of its sway control system. The SwayPro uses a 4-point sway control system like the Equal-i-zer but the Strait-Line uses a dual cam system to prevent sway. In order to choose the correct weight distribution system for your 2014 Airstream International and your 2016 Ford F-250 we will need to find your total tongue weight (TTW). Total tongue weight is calculated by adding the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer to any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Also keep in mind that if you can move any of the trailer's cargo forward to add more tongue weight you'll also see a reduction in sway.
