Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - A-6 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at Part Number A-6, this is the CURT two and five-sixteenth inch trailer hitch ball. A few measurements to go over with you real quick. This hitch ball is going to give us a shank diameter of an inch and a quarter, it's going to give us a shank length measuring from the bottom of the platform to the end of the threads of two and five-eighths of an inch. This is designed to fit draw bar thicknesses of a half inch to one inch thick. The hitch ball is going to offer a capacity of ten thousand pounds. It's made from a solid steel construction with a nice chrome finish on it, so it is going to stand up really well against rusting and corrosion. Here on the sides of the platform, it's going to have the flats, these are just your wench flats, makes for an easier installation, you can get your wrench around there for a nice, adequate grip.

Really going to come in handy when you need to torque this down. The hitch ball will need to be torqued to specifications listed by the manufacturer. You can find all that information on the tag that's going to come attached to the trailer hitch ball. You just want to make sure that you remove this tag before your installation. Really simple installation though. The hitch ball is going to go straight through that opening on your ball mount.

You're going to place on the lock washer as well as the nut, and then you're going to get everything tightened down, and again once you get it hand tight, or once you get it tight with a wrench, you will need to go ahead and torque it down to the specifications listed by the manufacturer. It looks like for this particular mount, it says to tighten the trailer ball to four hundred and fifty foot pounds of torque. That's going to do it for our review of Part Number A-6, this is the CURT two and five-sixteenth inch trailer hitch ball. .

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch Ball

  • What Torque Rating Should the Trailer Hitch Ball # A-6 be Tightened To
I spoke with my contact at CURT and he informed me that this 2-5/16 inch Trailer Hitch Ball # A-6 will need to be torqued to 450 ft/lbs. I attached FAQ on hitch balls for you to check out also.

  • Will Curt Hitch Ball # A-6 Work on Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System RP66559
Yes, the Reese Steadi-Flex weight distribution system part # RP66559 that you referenced takes a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank that is 2-5/8 inches long just like the part # A-6 so it would work well. Also this has the same 10k capacity as the Steadi-Flex.

The recommended ball for the Fastway E2 Weight Distribution Hitch # FA92-00-0800 that you have is 1-1/4 inch in diameter and with a length of 2-5/8 inches. For a 2-5/16 inch ball with those dimensions I would recommend the # C40030.

  • What is the Torque Spec for a Nut on a 1-7/8 Inch Hitch Ball
The torque value for your 1-7/8 inch ball is going to depend on the diameter of the shank. Draw-Tite lists the following torque specs: "During hitch ball installation, torque all 3/4" shank diameter balls to 160 ft. lbs., and 1" shank diameter balls to 250 ft. lbs., and 1-1/4" shank diameter balls to 450 ft. lbs."

  • Trailer Hitch Ball Wrench Size and Torque Rating for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Ball Shank Size
You can have a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball on either a 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch shank. The nut on a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank takes a wrench with a 1-7/8 inch socket. A hitch ball with a 1 inch shank will take a wrench with a 1-1/2 inch socket. You will need to torque all hitch balls with a 1-1/4 inch shank, like 2-51/6 inch hitch ball # A-6, down to 450 ft/lbs. I am including a link to some helpful trailer hitch ball information, if needed.

  • Will Curt Hitch Ball # A-6 Work with a Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System # BXW0751
The hitch balls we recommend for this Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System, part # BXW0751, have a shank length of either 2-3/4-inches (part # 19286 with a 2-5/16-inch ball size) or 2-5/8-inch (part # A-90, with a 2-inch ball size). The ball you ordered, part # A-6, also has a 2-5/8-inch long shank, so it should work with your Blue Ox SwayPro.

  • Choosing Correct Weight Distribution Hitch for 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Towing Travel Trailer
Trailer weight distribution hitches (WDH) such as the Curt TruTrack systems # C17499 and # C17500 do come in varying weight capacities. Selection of the correct one for any given towing setup is based on the actual fully-loaded tongue weight (TW). It is true that using a system rated for much more than your actual TW will cause poor ride quality. In the case of a WDH more is not necessarily better. All you need to do to select the right setup is measure your fully-loaded trailer's actual...

The vintage style of your trailer is more prone to crosswinds and passing vehicles so this system is the best for actively working to prevent sway. You will also need the hitch ball # A-6 for a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball or # A-90 for a 2 inch hitch ball. The Husky # HT32217 is too big a system...

If you are just looking for a cost effective replacement then the Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System part # C17330 will do a fine job for this. The Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System as the name states has trunnion style arms which you will need because they offer more ground clearance than the round style which you could get away with on taller trucks but not lower sitting SUV's. • Choosing Correct Curt Weight Distribution System for Trailer with GVWR of 6,243 Pounds
You upgraded your weight distribution from the Curt short-arm system, part # C17322, to the Curt TruTrack, part # C17500, which is much better system but it's still rated too high most likely. It all depends on the loaded trailer's tongue weight. Both of those systems are rated for 800 to 1,000 pounds of tongue weight. So you want the tongue weight of your loaded trailer added to the amount of weight you add behind the rear axle of your two vehicle to be between 800 and 1,000 pounds....

For your 2019 Coachman Apex Nano 185BH, you don't need to use a weight distribution system but it may still be beneficial not only for sway control but also for the lift to reduce rear truck sag when towing. My recommendation is the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution with Sway Control # RP66073 because the dual cams and rolled trunnion bars will keep that light trailer tracking correctly behind your Titan XD. The bars will be required for that sway control which is the bigger issue...

We do have hitch balls that are compatible with the Draw-Tite Drawbar # 3593 that you are looking at. The 3/4" ball hole diameter on the drawbar needs to match the shank diameter of the hitch ball that you choose. The 2-5/16" Curt Hitch Ball # A-6 that you referenced is for heavier towing applications and has a shank diameter of 1-1/4" so the shank is too large for the Draw-Tite drawbar. • Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for 6000 lb GTW 900 lb Tongue Weight Boat Trailer
That's a lot of tongue weight for a boat trailer! If your trailer has a surge (A/K/A Hydraulic) brake coupler, you won't want to use a chain suspended weight distribution system like the Curt # C17341 you've looked at. The tension on the chains caused by the spring bars will prevent the surge coupler from properly actuating, curtailing your braking effectiveness. With 900 lbs of tongue weight capacity, the # C17341 you'd looked at wouldn't work well because it has an 800 lb tongue weight...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for Trailer with GVWR of 5,200 Pounds
You are correct that a weight distribution system that is rated too high for what you need can cause a rough ride for you. On the other hand if it's rated too low it won't be able to do its job. If your trailer is fully loaded you'll likely have a loaded and ready to tow tongue weight between 500 and 600 pounds. You also need to add in the amount of weight behind the rear axle of your 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. With that being said you're probably looking for a system rated in the...

  • Should the Hitch Ball on a Weight Distribution System Be Greased
Yes, you should absolutely be using some grease on the top of your hitch ball, the White Grease Hitch Ball Lube part # 58117 in particular which is formulated specifically to reduce friction which is what is causing the chrome coating to wear off. The absence of this chrome coating is then going to allow for rust to occur therefore, I recommend you either cover the hitch ball while not in use with the Fastway Trailer Hitch Ball Cover part # FA82-00-3216 or you can replace it. • Best Way to Reduce Suspension Sag When Towing a Trailer
We have the perfect product for you, but it's not a suspension enhancement system as they are more ideal for vehicles that are carrying weight in the cargo area of the vehicle.
