Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40051 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at Part Number C40051. This is the CURT Hitch Ball. The Hitch Ball's going to have a diameter of 1 and 7/8th of an inch. We take a measurement of the shank diameter. That's going to give us a measurement of 1 inch and then the shank length is going to measure 2 and 1/8th of an inch. It's made of a stainless steel construction. It's going to offer a capacity of 3500 pounds.

Stainless steel is very strong and durable as well as rust and corrosion resistant. It does come with your lock washer and the nut. Then here at the base of the Hitch Ball we're going to have wrench flats. This is going to help when installing and allows you to get your wrench on there. Allows you to get a good grip, that way the ball doesn't spin when you tighten it down. It's going to allow you to easily get it torqued to the specifications listed by the manufacturer. The way this works is you'd want to place the shank through the Hitch Ball hole, on the draw bar of your ball mount.

Then on the underside of the ball mount platform you'd place on your lock washer. Then you would simply thread on the nut. Then you can get everything tightened down and torqued to specifications. That's going to do it for today's look at Part Number C40051.

The Curt stainless steel hitch ball is holding up extremely well, especially considering that it's being used in a salt-air / salt water environment. I would definitely recommend it and would obviously purchase it again if the need arose. Thanks for a great product at a very reasonable price!

Karl D.

After a year of use in our salt air salt water environment in South Jersey, the hitch ball still looks like new. Nothing like good quality stainless steel. Keep up the good work, Curt!

This is the second time I have ordered from eTrailer. This time I sent an email inquiry about the correct products for my 2012 Rav4. Adam R. responded with all the detailed information with references to videos and guides for the installation. I then ordered it online ("Nicole R" handled the order) and it arrived a couple of days later. The installation was easy and the instructions were accurate. The wiring harness fit perfectly. The only difference is I ran the hot lead inside the vehicle and thru a grommet in the firewall. I also used silicon around the wire running thru the grommet to insure it was water tight.

Exceptional service from from online representative to product delivery. This excellent ball completed my trailer hitch setup on my 2011 Subaru Outback which includes a Hidden Hitch with 2" receiver, aluminum ball mount, and this stainless steel ball -- all purchased from My Subaru and kayak trailer are happy. Very satisfied!

Hitch came quickly, was in very good condition, and fit perfectly. The tapped holes in the undercarriage were a bit rusty, so I used WD-40, a narrow bottle brush, and took my time putting the bolts in, backing them off, cleaning again & oiling, until deep enough to secure the hitch. Bolts are a bit difficult to get started, so have patience. The dimensions for the cut-out were right on. I cut 3 sides, used a small c-clamp to keep the flap open while I bolted the hitch. Finally, I put the flap back and sealed it as well as possible with silicone. Saved about $300 vs dealership.

The ball was stainless steel, but the lock washer and nut were zinc-plated steel. I thought everything would be stainless steel.

A 1 7/8" stainless ball is hard to find. Etrailer is my source for high quality hitch and trailer parts and accessories.

easy to install, works great! i use it to tow boat and for a four rack bike carrier. staff was very helpfull in selecting right carrier.

Excellent hitch ball for the price. Great in every way with the one exception that I really wanted the hardware to be stainless steel also. I’ve bought this brand for a different application some years ago and at that time everything was stainless steel. Would have gladly paid more for the 100% stainless steel hardware. Would be especially helpful in the states where salt is used on the roads during winter.

I like the ball, but the nut and washer were not stainless. I replaced them, but would have been glad to pay a bit more for a stainless ball including a stainless nut and washer.

Perfect, ball arrived promptly. Couldn't find stainless locally. Fits as described.

Solid and strong. Have some BIG wrenches on hand to attach it though. Nicely finished, well made.

Etrailer has the best customer service and fastest shipping. They have earned my business from this day until the end of days.

I like always-great service, great product reviews and info and quick delivery! Thanks

  • Does 2 Inch Hitch Ball and 1-7/8 Inch Hitch Ball Use Same Size Nut
So long as the hitch balls have the same diameter shank then they will use the same size nut. For example, the 1-7/8" Hitch Ball # C40051 and 2" Hitch Ball # C40004 both have a 1" diameter shank so they will use the same nut.

  • Is Cushioned Ball Mount Recommended for Light Trailer
The polyurethane interior that cushions the Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount # AMSC2 will still be beneficial for you even though your trailer is lightweight and this ball mount has a 10,000 lb towing capacity and 2,000 lb tongue weight capacity. Even with a light tear trailer there is still going to be movement that occurs when you are towing; your trailer will bounce and inertia is going to cause some shock and strain on your vehicle when you stop, start and slow down. The Convert-A-Ball Ball...

  • Can Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount be Used for Bike Rack Between Car and Travel Trailer
So long as you have the needed space between your RAV4 and travel trailer for your bike rack and trikes to fit you can use the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount with 2" Receiver for Bike Racks and Cargo Carriers # D210. There's no way for me to know how much room you have or if you have the needed space so you'd need to take some measurements, of course, and the # D210 extends 12-1/2" from the hitch pin hole to the hitch ball. This ball mount - when you are towing and using an accessory at...

  • Capacity of Curt Class III # C13119 Trailer Hitch Versus Capacities of 2012 Honda CR-V
For a 2012 Honda CRV, you'd want to use the Curt Class III hitch, part # C13119. The Curt # 13555 fits 2007-2011 CRV models only, and wouldn't be a fit for your 2012 model. The hitch itself carries a 3500 lb towing/350 lb tongue weight capacity, but these capacities will be limited by the capacities of the vehicle itself, since the capacities of your CRV are lower. You'll want to abide by the capacity of the lowest rated component. According to Honda, the maximum towing capacity of the...

  • Recommended Ball Mount That Will Work With Shank Mounted Bike Rack
The Curt Ball Mount, part # D-4 measures 10-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the hole for the hitch ball as you mentioned. Since you said you need at least 6 inches, this ball mount would give you more than enough clearance for your bike rack. This ball mount fits 2 inch receiver openings and uses a hitch ball with a 1 inch shank like part # 40038 for a 2 inch diameter ball or part # C40051 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. If you need a hitch pin and clip I recommend...

  • Recommended Ball Mount With 5-1/2 Inch Rise For 2-Inch Hitch
We do not have any fixed ball mounts with a 5-1/2 inch rise specifically but we do have them with a 5-inch or 6-inch rise like part # 40332 and part # C24WR. You may want to consider an adjustable mount that gives you some flexibility. The ball mount I recommend is the Convert-a-Ball Adjustable-Height Ball Mount, part # TK5007. This is adjustable up to a 10-inch drop or an 9-inch rise. If you need a 2-inch hitch ball I recommend part # 63845. For a 1-7/8 inch ball I recommend part # C40051.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Wiring For 2011 Honda Odyssey
That's a very good question. With a hitch being installed on a vehicle and the receiver tube sitting below the rear bumper, entering a driveway can cause the bike racks or what ever is attached to the hitch to scrape. Although there are no guarantees, there may be ways to help prevent some of that. Many things can cause scraping when attaching items to the hitch, like degree of incline, hitch height from the ground, height of trailer from the ground, etc. The trailer hitch I recommend...

  • Carrying 190lb Scooter in Hitch Mounted Carrier on 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek
I've located on online copy of the owner's manual for your XV Crosstrek. On page 8-21, Subaru states that the maximum trailer tongue weight (maximum allowable amount of downward force applied to trailer hitch) cannot exceed 200 lbs. Unfortunately, any carrier plus the 190 lb weight of the scooter would exceed that 200 lb capacity so therefore I couldn't recommend using a hitch mounted carrier to transport your scooter. A 300 lb rated carrier is what I'd normally recommend, but in this...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for Towing Small Boat w/ 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek
If all you'll be using the hitch for is towing, I'd go with the Curt Class III hitch, part # C13135. If you're also planning on using the hitch as an attachment point for a hitch mounted accessory, the C13135 wouldn't be your best choice. All the Curt hitches available for your XV Crosstrek have a warranty stipulation that requires that a stabilizing strap like # 18050 be used for all non-trailer loads like cargo carriers or bike racks. The problem is, the stabilizing straps don't work...

Instead, I recommend taking a look at the MaxxTow Ball Mount w/ 2" Accessory Receiver part # MT70066 which will be one of the very few options we have for you that will allow you to both tow a trailer and carry a bike rack without reducing the capacity of your hitch. • What is Needed to Tow Safely With a 2011 Toyota Sienna XLE?
Happy to see that safety is important enough that you'd ask, and the answer is no, you do not need any additional equipment such as engine coolant in order to tow safely with your 2011 Toyota Sienna. Now, that does not necessarily mean something like a transmission cooler is a bad idea, as it will stop your Sienna from working quite so hard, but it is not necessary. You came to the right place. To equip your 2002 Ram for towing your new pop-up you will need the following items: a trailer hitch, ball mount, hitch ball, wiring harness, brake controller and a brake controller installation kit. A good first step is a check of your Ram owner's manual to verify its towing capacity, which does vary slightly by truck version. It is not likely that your 3500-lb pop-up will pose any issues for your truck but it is still a good idea to confirm. First, you...

Since your trailer's coupler height is 18 inches, and your hitch height is 12-1/4 inches, you are correct that you would need a ball mount with 5-3/4 inches of rise. That said, you do not need to have the exact amount of rise (or drop) for your ball mount, and being within an inch or so is perfectly fine.
