Weigh Safe ball mount coupled to a trailer

This Weigh Safe ball mount has an easy-to-use, built-in scale that measures your trailer's tongue weight every time you tow. If the scale indicates that your tongue weight is too low or too high, you can adjust it before you head out so that you can complete your journey with the peace of mind that your setup is safe.

What is Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent - and should not exceed 15 percent - of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10,000-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components.

Why is Tongue Weight So Important?

Weigh Safe helps ensure proper trailer tongue weight

Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with an improper tongue weight can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or cause your trailer to separate from the vehicle.

Built-In Tongue Weight Scale

The gauge of the Weigh Safe built-in tongue weight scale

The Weigh Safe ball mount's built-in scale signals you to adjust your load before you hit the road, resulting in a much safer and enjoyable towing experience. Before this ball mount, gauging your trailer's tongue weight was a hassle. You had to rely on inefficient bathroom scales, make a trip to the weigh station, or purchase a separate tongue weight scale. But with the Weigh Safe's built-in scale, measuring your tongue weight is as easy as coupling your trailer to your ball mount. Simply hook-up your trailer to the Weigh Safe ball mount just as you would any other ball mount. The weight of your trailer will push down on the hitch ball, which in turn pushes down on an internal hydraulic piston that sits on a bed of oil. When the piston drops into the oil, the pressure reading is sent out to the scale.

Easily Adjusts to Fit Your Setup

Weigh Safe ball mount has adjustable height

Adjusting and setting up the Weigh Safe ball mount to work with your specific trailer is easy. First, unlock and pull out the dual pins and remove the platform from the shank. Next, pull out the hitch ball retaining pin from the back of the platform and insert either the 2" or 2-5/16" hitch ball. A 1-7/8" hitch ball (WSB-L - sold separately) is also available. Then reinsert the retaining pin to secure the ball to the platform. Replace the platform and slide it along the shank to the desired height. Insert the dual pins and use one of the included keys to lock the pins in place.

Weigh Safe ball mounts installed in drop and rise positions

The Weigh Safe ball mount can be used in either the drop or rise position to best suit your application.

Superior Aluminum and Stainless Steel Construction

From the first moment that you lay eyes on the Weigh Safe ball mount you'll see that you're getting a superior, well-made product. The Weigh Safe's shank and ball mount platform are made entirely of 6061 T6 billet aluminum, which is the same material that is used to build aircraft components, automobile frames, and freight liners. This type of aluminum is known for having superior strength while maintaining its light weight, which makes it highly desirable over hollow steel components. 6061 T6 aluminum is also rustproof, which means the Weigh Safe hitch will maintain its clean, shiny, and impressive appearance for years to come. And the hitch balls are made of solid stainless steel, offering far greater protection against rust and corrosion than other steel hitch balls that are only painted or plated on the surface.

The Weigh Safe ball mount meets VESC V-5 regulations and is SAE J684 certified. These regulatory bodies - the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission and the Society for Automotive Engineers - create standards for the design, construction, and performance of automotive and towing accessories. Weigh Safe has had this ball mount thoroughly tested in simulation to ensure that it complies with these standards. The result is a strong, safe, sturdy product that is built to last.

Smart looking. Pretty sloppy in my receiver but there is a fix for that. Nice to be towing my trailer level now.

It is very sloppy, after towing with it for a while the ball is super sloppy also, and the scale is a guess at best. Guess you could say after some use I’m not happy with its clunking and sloppyness.

I love the fact I don't have to guess hitch weight!

Thanks William

Works real well no guess work loading tounge weight i feel confident on the hi-way thanks to this hitch.
William - 07/23/2022

My 2016 Yukon came with 20 inch wheels and the receiver moved up into the bumper not below it like my old Yukon. The 8 inch drop solved the problem as I have 13 inch wheels on my trailer. I can now pull it level and know exactly how much weight is on the tongue. I do need to use the full 8 inch drop. Great Product. Be sure to measure, if you have 22 inch wheels, or a small trailer low to the ground, get the 10 inch drop. e trailer is great to work with and shipping is fast.

The hitch works great, absolutely no rust. Very east to switch from 2 to 1-7/8 ball for different trailers. I would highly recommend this hitch over a steel one that will show rust after a short time. Being able to get the tongue weight correct is a super plus!
Bob - 05/21/2017

The workmanship of the aluminum work is over the top. I have an F250 with a 6 inch lift and this will work perfect with the different trailers I have for Pulling. Another reason I went with this product is because of the stainless steel balls and the ability to be able to change out the balls. Having two balls on the hitch system at all times for me.... I thought that looked a little tacky. Also the built-in scale for the ability to see my tongue weight is a pretty cool idea. If you're having problems with someone figuring out what drop you would like the staff at etrailer is really nice

The hitch is working out great. I think its a Well laid-out design and looks fantastic on the truck. Thanks again for making a great product. Havent really pulled anything heavy enough to utilize the built-in scale. But Im glad Ive got it
Brad - 01/30/2018

Item is exactly what everyone needs out of a hitch. I have used every level of the lift/lower and all the connections. I only had the one use for it originally, since buying this hitch I have never had to worry about whether I had the right size or connection for any trailer I needed to pull. Something that came in very handy in the year of Murphy's Law (2020).

Only down side is it collects road grime like a magnet. Your undercarriage could be spotless and this thing would require gloves to take off. I would suggest keeping a box of disposable gloves around if you plan to take it off all the time, or buying the dark colored one if you plan on leaving it on.

This product has continued to do very well for me and even though it’s a bit dinged up it still looks and functions great. Held up better than the trucks receiver in fact.

I have hade several Hitch systems over the past 55 years and I truly believe this to be the best I have ever owned! Well made, great features and functions not provided by the other good hitch manufactures out there... Best ever QC and the price point is very competitive! trailer staff provides the best customer service, e-v-e-r!

I am very pleased with this purchase!

I purchased the WS8-2 several months ago and it has performed as expected. However, I purchased a WS10-3 for my 2017 F-350 in April and after two months and only using it two times it leaked and stopped working. I contacted etrailer to report the issue and assumed I would be told to return it for replacement. Instead I was informed that it was a warranty issue and was provided a number to contact Weigh-Safe. Etrailer customer service was responsive and sorry I had issues but that I had to deal with Weigh-Safe. I did not expect this given the price of the hitch and the very short period of time I had used it. I completed the warranty submission online for Weigh-Safe and after a couple of days was provided a return authorization number. I have returned the unit , at my expense ($18), to Weigh-Safe for repair or replacement. Dissapointed I had to deal with the manufacturer and not the seller. Will advise the outcome of this process after completion.

E-trailer is my go to company for all my towing needs. Quality products, great value and the best customer service.

My only "complaint" would be that the keyway does not come with a cover. Eventually the key hole gets gummed up with debris and becomes a problem. It should come with a cover, but until then you can order separate. Other than that, total game changer! Being able to know the tongue weight of any load/configuration makes towing much safer and much more comfortable. Seems to be very high quality materials and looks great. I have had it for a year and absolutely love it. Highly recommend it!

I "thought" this would work with my 2011 Tundra (20" wheels) pulling the 8x12 covered scout troop trailer that always rides high given the fully loaded trailer with ~14" wheels. Well it did give me a way to lower the trailer AND opened my eyes to being a little heavy on the tongue weight BUT...after starting my first pull with the trailer I soon realized this thing hangs down too far, maybe ~3" too far. At every point where clearance would be an issue for a little pretend sports car with those plastic air dams in front, this thing scraped hard. So it's now not returnable without their understanding/charity and I can't use it as intended. SOOOOOO...good product but if you have 20" wheels, get one with less "drop", an adjustable vertical post, or just save your money - the trailer was probably fine the way it was ~$[XXX]ago 8-(
And to etrailer seriously need to add something to the description to let people know how this fits by wheel size.

Beautifully made piece of equipment. Looking forward to its first long-haul from MD to SW Florida in a few weeks. Will replace all of the multiple-drop hitch mounts I have collected over the years with a single device.

These are very heavy duty hitches, beautiful finish and tongue weight feature is one of a kind.

very good part and fast shipping :)

Overall item is good quality. Only compliant is key hole for lock has no cover so it get full of road residue.

THIS IS THE ONE, the only one you'll ever need! DON'T DO what I did - I have purchased about 8 different hitch ball mounts and balls for various trailer and vehicle combinations over the years and for what I paid you could have bought this with a lot of $$$ left over! I just got it and can tell without having used it yet that IT WILL HAUL ANYTHING YOU'RE GOING TO PULL. It is top quality construction and design, and best of all it is made in the USA! It has a solid shank, is easily adjustable either up or down, a beefy adjustment lock, easy ball size changing, a stowed position to eliminate bruised shins, and the unique tongue weight scale - built like a TANK! The weight scale is essential for towing safety and for balancing a load. Too bad it took me so long to get it RIGHT, anybody need any used hitch ball mounts?

It is living up to my expectations - great product PERIOD!
Joe F - 12/01/2017

Worked OK at first. The scale is off a great deal at the lower weights. Eventually play in both the ball mount slide and receiver locations increased. My guess is that any play will increase with aluminum equipment.
The changeout of position and ball size is very easy though.

This is a great hitch. It is very well made and should last a lifetime. The color and material are great. The hitch is heavy and made strong. The balls of the hitch fit my trailer tongue perfect. Need a hitch this is the one you should get. When you hook your trailer to it you see the weight of your trailer tongue right on the hitch.

It is great with no problems at all. Just like new
Verdell - 08/22/2020

very good looking and with the help of Danielle H I had it in 5 Days thank you Etrailer!!

Package was delivered damaged and missing parts. They took care of it quickly and I received missing part in time for my trip. This ball mount is amazing and scale works perfect.

Works perfect, love this hitch. Very well made!

Great product I tow tow different trailers ones a boat trailer the other a Rv camper under 2800 pounds. The adjustment is easy for keeping the load level while traveling. I noticed with other hitches that after the first year owning corrosion was bad on them. this adjustable hitch is easy to remove and rise and lower strong aluminum and the ball 2” is changeable to a 2 5/16” when needed. Did I mention it comes with both balls. I would definitely recommend.

I drive a Wrangler with a low tongue weight limit. This WeighSafe hitch makes tongue weight easily readable. It's not cheap, but I like the use of non-corrosive materials and thick aluminum parts. The balls are solid stainless steel, not just chromed like cheaper hitches. I bought the optional 1-7/8 ball so I can travel with all three sizes. I have had many people ask "what's that gauge on your hitch", It's fun to answer that it's a live tongue weight measurement.

I wanted the Weigh Safe Ball Mount so I could stop guessing what the tongue weight was. Now I can tow with confidence that my trailer is properly loaded and balanced. The unit is obviously well-made and heavy-duty. My only complaint is that since there are so many "moving parts" (the receiver bar, the ball mount, and the ball) the whole assembly is loose. This causes a lot of movement and noise while towing. Nevertheless, the looseness doesn't seem to affect towing performance.

Bought this for my Tundra 4x4. I originally bought a Curt drop hitch/ball mount for my boat, but before my boat was finished I decide to lift my truck. Therefore I needed an adjustable hitch to avoid buying the wrong height again. I have to say, the quality is night and day between the Curt and the Weigh Safe. It is truly a beautiful ball mount. I have not had a chance to use it but just by playing with it and seeing how everything works and looking over the machining, I can tell this ball mount is of the highest quality, and Made in the USA! The Curt advertises Made in the USA but anything over 10,000lb rating, it comes from China. I definitely recommend this mount.

Real well built hitch and gives peace of Monday knowing that you have the correct amount of weight on tongue. I tow flatbed trailer with vehicle behind motorhome. Having correct tongue weight ensures that I don’t put to much weight on hitch and having weight disturbed correctly the trailer tires run much more even temperatures, good for peace of mind!
