Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - 4280 Review

Today well be reviewing part number 4280. This is the Draw Tite Ball Mount with a 1" rise or 2" drop, rated at 12,000 lbs. This is the ultra heavy duty ball mount from Draw Tite. You can see this bottom piece is a solid piece. It's a pretty heavy mount so it's definitely going to stand up to strength and durability. It is designed to fit a 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver. When choosing the hitch ball you want to make sure that the shank of the hitch ball does not exceed the ball hold diameter, which for this mount is going to measure 1-1/4". The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole is going to give us a measurement of 8-1/2".

This position here is the rise position so if I measure from the ball platform down to the shank, which would also be the inside top edge of the receiver tube of the hitch is going to give us a measurement of 1" that's where we get our rise from. If we flip it over to install in the drop position and perform that same measurement, it's going to give us a drop of 2". This hitch is rated for up to 12,000 lbs of gross trailer weight and up to 1,200 lbs of maximum ton weight. The distance that we have from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the shank is going to give us a measurement of 3-1/4"; and then from the center of the hitch pin hole to the upright portion here of the ball platform is going to give us a measurement of 3-5/8". The ball platform is going to give a thickness 7/8" and it is going to measure 3" in total width. The overall length of the mount is going to measure about 13-1/2". The way this works is you would simply take the shank inside of the end of the receiver tube of your hitch, line up your pin holes and then install a 5/8" pin and clip or a hitch pin and lock.

These items are sold separately. You may refer to our website, type in part number PC3 and itll refer you to this pin and clip here or you can look on the product's product page under related items to view some more options. That's going to do it for today's review of part number 4280. This is the Draw Tite ball mount with a 1" rise or 2" drop, rated at 12,000 lbs. .

Needed a ball mount and ball to tow 7500#, these items exceeded my expectations. They are well made, finishes are great. I am very pleased with this ball mount and ball combination. If anyone needs to tow up to 10,000# this is the combo to go with. 733792

Quality seems good even though it’s made in China. Welds are perfect. I love these Zinc plated drawbars with the solid shank. In New England the cheap painted steel ones with tube shank rust out from the inside. Hopefully the plating holds up as long as the older US made ones we have. 526339

If I had realized this item has a solid shank I would have purchased the one piece forged unit (40330). The forged unit costs less and has a higher capacity. 48191

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Ball Mount

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a Truck and Trailer that Sit Perfectly Level
Since your hitch height is the exact same as your coupler height your best option would be to go with a ball mount with a 1 inch rise since that is the closest to a zero rise/drop ball mount we offer. The tongue weight of your trailer will cause the rear of your truck to sag slightly which will put your setup at very close to perfectly level. The ball mounts part numbers # 4280 and # 4284 both would work well for you. The # 4284 is just a longer version of the # 4280.

  • Selecting A Ball Mount When Trailer And Coupler Are Same Height
When towing, the trailer should always be as level as possible. A level trailer will put less strain on the connection between the trailer and hitch. It will also help the trailer stay in line behind the vehicle. I have attached a couple of helpful articles that you can check out that explains towing and how to measure to make certain you get the correct ball mount. After you have taken your measurements you can check out the attached link for the ball mounts we offer. Use the menu...

  • Dimensions of Draw-Tite Heavy Duty Ball Mount part # 4280
The platform that the ball mounts to is 3 inches wide by 7/8 inches thick. The shank that s into the hitch is 2X2 inches square. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the ball platform is 3-5/16 inches. If the Thule rack you have is designed to clamp around the ball mount and has a maximum clamp of 2-5/8x2-5/8 inches, it should fit around this ball mount, but you need to measure your hitch. Measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your hitch to the face...

  • Looking for Ball Mount with 3/4 Inch Rise or Drop
I'm guessing you're needing a ball mount, is that correct? Were you needing a rise or a drop? If you're needing a 3/4 inch rise, the # 2923 ball mount would provide that. If you flip the # 2923 to the drop position, you'd have a 2 inch drop, which is as close as we can get to a 3/4 inch drop. As long as the trailer ball places the trailer within 2 inches of level, you'll be just fine. The ball mount has a 7500 lb capacity. For a 1-7/8 inch trailer ball, use part # 19260 or # 63845 for...

  • Fit and Compatibility of Alumistinger Ball Mount and Recommended Ball for Chevrolet Silverado 1500
The Andersen Aluminstinger # AM3503 has a towing capacity of 8,000lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 800lbs. If your boat trailer and cargo are below this weight then the Andersen Alumistinger Ball Mount will perform great. Typically tongue weight is 10-15% of the trailer, so for your 5,000lb boat would be anywhere from 500-750lbs. If you are planning on upgrading your boat then I would recommend a higher capacity ball mount like the Draw-Tite # 4280. This ball mount also has the...

  • Options for Long Ball Mount for a 2-1/2 Inch Hitch
You have two options, neither are ideal though. To get an extension 13 inches or more you are going to need to use a Titan Extension like part # RP45292. Only issue here is the minimum this extension this product can give is 24 inches, which may be too much. Then for a ball mount to go along with this extension you would want part # 4280 as this has a 2 inch drop like you requested. The other option you have would be a ball mount like part # AMSCV-2 which will fit your 2-1/2 inch hitch...

  • Parts Needed to Install Reese # 83660 On Travel Trailer
If your TT has an A-frame type tongue, you can certainly use the # 83660 Reese Friction Sway Control. I'm not entirely sure what you mean when you said your hitch was straight. I'll assume that you're speaking of a straight ball mount with no rise/drop, kind of like # 4280, is that correct? If that's the case, you can use the # RP26003 adapter which installs between the trailer ball and the ball mount. All the rest of the necessary hardware is included with the friction sway unit.
