I bought this because I needed the rise, not the drop. But, I only bought it after watching the instructional video on etrailer.com on how to measure for how much of a rise you need. When I pulled this out of the box, I thought "this is way too high" and that the video missed the mark. But imagine my surprise when I put it on my van after putting the ball on -- when I put the trailer on the ball, the trailer was dead level! Kudos to etrailer for putting up that video! I've ordered from etrailer a few times and the service is just insanely good! Incredibly fast shipping, prices better than any other place online or in my area, expert advice when you need it and great information. 669572

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch Ball Mount

  • Determining Correct Ball Mount for 2007 Honda Odyssey to Tow Pop Up Camper
The way to determine the correct amount of rise (or drop) needed to tow a trailer level there are a couple of measurements needed. First you would measure from the ground up to the top of the receiver opening on the trailer hitch. Then, with the trailer level, measure from the ground to the bottom of the coupler. If the trailer is higher the difference is the amount of rise you will need. And if the vehicle is higher the difference is the amount of drop you would need. On the 2007 Honda...

  • Solution for Carrying Bike Rack and Towing Trailer with 2011 Fleetwood Tioga Motorhome
I checked out pictures of your 2011 26 ft Fleetwood Tioga and I believe I came up with a much easier option with the Swagman RV Ladder Bike Rack part # S80630. This will give you a way to carry your bikes that attaches to the ladder at the back of your RV and frees up your hitch to use the # D-28 ball mount and you'd be set. There isn't a similar dual hitch adapter that has the drop you'd need. And using an additional hitch adapter would not be wise due to added leverage and length. I...

  • Extra Long Ball Mount Approximately 14 Inches From Center of Hitch Pin to Center of Ball Hole
We offer an Extra Long Ball Mount, # D-28, which has a 4 inch rise and a 6 inch drop. The distance from the center of the pin hole to the center of the ball hole is 14-1/4 inches. In order to maintain the structural integrity of the ball mount, making modifications like drilling a new hole is strongly discouraged and all warranties would be void.

  • Choosing the Correct Ball Mount with 5.5 Inches Drop Between Hitch and Coupler
We don't have a 5 inch drop ballmount for a 2 inch receiver (only 2-1/2 inch receivers), but a 6 inch ballmount, like # D-28, which you reference, will work just fine. The hitch ball can be an inch or so above the coupler height, since when they are joined there will be sag in the tow vehicle. Also if you are towing a light trailer, you will be better off going with the 6 inch ballmount. I have included a FAQ article on choosing the correct ball mount for you to check out.

  • Will Curt Ball Mount D-28 Clear the Spare Tire on a 2009 Toyota RAV4
On Curt ball mount # D-28, it measures 14-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. Given that the spare tire on a 2009 Toyota RAV4 is sort of recessed into the rear door and bumper, this is likely going to enough distance. On trailer hitches we have installed on the same generation RAV4 the hitch pin hole to spare tire measurement was about 6-1/2 inches so the ball mount is more than long enough to give you the clearance you need.

  • How to Determine the Correct Rise Ball Mount that will Clear the Spare Tire on a 2005 Jeep Liberty
In order to choose the ball mount that will clear the spare tire and have enough rise or drop for your 2005 Jeep Liberty, you will need to take a few measurements. These measurements can be different on each vehicle depending on the brand of trailer hitch that you have installed and the size of the spare tire on your Jeep. To determine the length that you will need to clear the spare tire, you will want to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch to the furthest...

  • How to Choose Ball Mount for 20 Inch Hitch Height and 14 Inch Trailer Height
To determine rise or drop ball mount you'd need, you'll need to make a simple calculation. Measure the distance from the inside top edge of the receiver tube down to the ground, it sounds like you've already done that and came up with 20 inches. Then measure the distance from the BOTTOM of the coupler to the ground when the trailer is level. If the hitch is taller than the coupler, you'll need a ball mount with a drop. If the trailer coupler is taller, you'll need a ball mount with a rise. If...

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a 2014 Toyota Sienna to Tow a Boat Trailer Level
Since the coupler height on the trailer is 18 inches and the receiver height on the 2014 Toyota Sienna is 11-1/4 inches a ball mount with a 4 inch rise will not be high enough to tow the trailer level. You would need a ball mount with a 6-3/4 inch rise (or something very close) to tow the trailer level. Let's first make sure we measure things the same way. We measure the receiver height the same as you have done; to the top of the receiver opening. On the trailer side, with the trailer...

I recommend using the Curt Ball Mount part # D-28 which has a 6" drop. We do not have a 2" ball mount that offers exactly 6-1/2" of drop with an extended shank but since the vehicle will squat a bit while attached to the trailer, the 1/2" difference will not be an issue for you. This ball mount slides into a 2" receiver tube opening and works with hitch balls that have a 1" diameter shank.
