Video Transcript for Curt Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - D-26 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number D-26. This is the CURT Ball Mount with the extra long shank. This is ball mount is designed to work with the 2" x 2" receiver-style hitch. You can see here on the back side that we have a nice hollow shank. This is rated for up to 7,500 pounds of gross trailer weight and 750 pounds of maximum tongue weight. When choosing the hitch ball, you want to make sure that the shank of that hitch ball does not exceed the ball hole diameter, which for this mount is going to measure right at 1". Has a nice finish on it so it is going to be protected from rust and corrosion.

Couple measurements to go over real quick. The distance from the center of the hitch pinhole to the center of our ball hole is going to measure about 12 5/8" long. That's the distance that we have between the two. The distance from the center of the hitch pinhole to the closest point of the edge here of the ball platform is going to measure about 8 1/2". Distance from the center of the hitch pinhole to the back of the shank is going to measure about 2 1/2".

The overall length of this mount is going to measure right at 17". It's a really simple installation. You can just take the ball mount and slide it into the receiver tube of your hitch, line up your pinholes, and then insert a hitch pin and clip or a hitch pin and lock. These items are sold separately and you can refer to the ball mount's product page under related items to view those products, or go to our website and type in part number PC3 and it will refer you to the standard 5/8" pin that comes with the clip. With the ball mount in this position, it's going to give us a drop of right at 2". That's measuring from the inside top edge of the receiver tube to the ball platform. We can also use this ball mount in the rise position simply by flipping it over.

In the rise position it's going to give us a rise of 3/4". Here up front our drawbar thickness is going to measure about 7/8" and it's going to measure about 2 1/2" in width. That's going to complete today's review of part number D-26. This is the CURT Ball Mount with an extra long shank. .

I was having trouble finding the proper ball mount for my Range Rover as many ball mounts are too short. After speaking with the folks at etrailer and viewing a couple of the online videos, I was able to pick from the vast inventory on hand. Boom, a couple days later, it was on my doorstep!! Thank you, it fits and looks perfect. p.s. made in America!!! 563039

Bought a new truck and never thought my ball mount off old truck would be an issue. Sure enough, let my tailgate down and it hit the top of my wind jack to my trailer. Went to u-haul,tractor supply and walmart. None had the solution to my problem. Started a Web search and came across etrailer. Found exactly what I needed and at a great price! Not to mention super fast shipping. I ordered on a Monday evening and received it on Thursday. That was standard shipping too. Thanks etrailer. Will order from you for any of my trailer needs. Item d-26. 3/4 rise or 2"drop. Extra long. I use the 2" drop for my truck and trailer. 351033

I bought this for two reasons. One I needed a longer hitch for the back of my Polaris Ranger and two I needed a longer hitch to use with the hitch I put on the back of my camper so the ball would clear the bumper and I could double tow. The works great for both use cases. 785321

Love the extra long hitch receiver. Works great except it is about 1/2 inch too short. The truck tailgate hits the camper electric box on the jack when the tailgate is coming down. I think this more a flaw of the camper company having the jack too far forward not letting the tailgate freely go open and closing . I think this is the longest receiver that is made. The trailer pulls straight and true. 736337

  • Longer Ball Mount Solution for Camper Towing with Tailgate Down for Added Clearance
The best way to add clearance when towing with a truck that has it's tailgate down is to go with a longer ball mount like the # D-26 that you referenced which is overall 12-5/8 inches. You can use hitch extenders but they end up cutting the capacity of the hitch they are installed by 50 percent so they aren't my favorite solution to recommend.

Thanks. We think you are pretty awesome, too! You can certainly go to a higher capacity trailer hitch which will help with your current situation and provide additional capacity should you upgrade trailers or boats in the future. Keep in mind though that you will be limited to the truck's towing capacities specified in the owner's manual. For your 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 you can go with Curt hitch # 14301. • Recommended Way to Tow a Trailer With a Jeep Wrangler that has a Rear Spare Tire
A hitch extender will reduce the weight capacity of your hitch. Instead, I suggest using a long ball mount like # D-26. This ball mount is 12-5/8 inches from the hitch pin hole to the ball hole. If you need longer than that let me know the distance you need and I'll find one that will work. Also, if you need a rise or drop in the ball mount. This particular ball mount uses a hitch ball with a 1 inch shank like # 40038 for a 2 inch ball or # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch ball.

  • Super Extra Long Ball Mount to Clear the Spare Tire on a Jeep Liberty
On the CURT Ball Mount, # D-26, it measures 12-5/8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. It will clear the spare tire on your Jeep Liberty, but it still may be tight. For a super extra long ball mount, go with # 80232. It measures 16 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. That will give you enough clearance and room to spare. I have included a link to a video review for you.

  • Does Going With a Longer Ball Mount Cause Trailer to Handle Differently
Going from an 8 inch long ball mount shank to a 12 inch long one like the part # D-26 won't make any noticeable changes in handling. It might be somewhat easier to back the trailer up as you basically have increased the length between the trailer axle and your vehicle axle, but it would be hardly noticeable. There will be a slight increase in leverage of the tongue weight to the hitch of your vehicle, but it wouldn't be enough to reduce the capacity of your trailer hitch.

If you need an extra-long ball mount with 4-inches of rise to keep your hitched trailer level with the ground then you can use Curt # D-28 which provides a choice of 4-inches of rise or 6-inches of drop. We do not have any straight ball mounts (without a rise or drop) that feature the longer shank you're needing but the minimal rise this particular unit does provide should be offset by the slight rear sag you'll get on the Jeep when hooking up a trailer. It is not recommended to invert the Malone 2" Dual Purpose Hitch Receiver # MPG544 for towing purposes. Your trailer hitch's tongue weight will also be reduced by 50% when you use your bike rack in this adapter, so you will want to account for that as well. My recommendation is to use a longer ball mount like the # D-26 to give you that extra length you desire.
