Video Transcript for Review of etrailer Trailer Locks - Coupler Locks - E98888

Today we're going to take a look at the etrailer.com Trailer Coupler Lock, with the 3 3/8" Span. Now this part will include the lock itself, and the two keys, and this coupler lock is designed for the wide easy latch levers you'll see on some of the A-frame couplers, and the wide latch lever on some of the hydraulic surge break actuators. But it will still also work on some of the standard trigger style couplers that have the 1/4" diameter hole.I am going to show you a couple of the couplers. Here's one of the A-frame couplers I've talked about. Has the very wide easy latch lever right up here you can see. It's pretty wide here, so you do need the span width that's pretty wide.

And then also it'll work on your standard trigger latch coupler just like that. It's pretty thin here, but it'll still go through there. It's a little wider than when you want it, but if you still have it, it'll work on either one of those. Now this does help prevent the coupler from releasing from the hitch ball while your trailer's in tow. And it'll also help prevent someone from attaching to an unattended trailer and towing it away.A few dimensions on this lock.

The pin diameter right here is 1/4 of an inch. The inside span width, it's going to be right at 3 3/8". Overall length from one end to the other is right at 6 7/8". It is a flush locking design. Has a nice rubber cover here that'll cover the lock cylinder to prevent any dirt or grime from getting in there.

Helps prevent any corrosion. And what's nice is on the other end here, you can see it has a nice, rubber grip to it, to help when you're installing the lock. I'm going to show you how to do that here, right now. So we're going to take the A-frame coupler with the wide easy latch on it, and you can see when you go to install this on your hitch ball, you'll lift the latch up, drop it onto your hitch ball, close the latch, and it's attached. And what this lock will do .. Let me go ahead and take the cylinder off and we'll show you.

We'll go ahead and put the key in, and you just . It's threaded onto the pin, so you can turn the key. Or, another easy way is just to spin the pin with the rubber handle and it'll spin right off, just like that. And then what you'll do is there's a pole right here. So what happens with the latch closed, if you stick this pin through there, and then go ahead and put your lock on there, go ahead and spin it into the . It tightens down all the way. Once it's tight, pull your key out, put your cover on, and you can see with that lock in there, it'll keep the latch from fully opening, which will keep it from detaching from your hitch ball. And again, also if it's not connected to a hitch ball, if it's just an unattended trailer, it'll . You put the lock in there, it'll keep anybody from opening it, and attaching it to their hitch ball, and they're taking it away. And then to remove it again, all you have to do is pop open the rubber cover, put your key in there, just start unthreading it, and again we'll take this side and just spin it. It's a little bit faster. And just like that, it'll come apart. It's simple as that. And then again, like I mentioned, it will work even on this narrower trigger latch. This one uses a trigger latch that you pull up on. You release it. Hook it to the ball. Close it. And again, it has a hole right there. So again, you could put this through there, even though it's a little bit longer than you probably want, but still. It'll work. Put your lock on there. Go ahead and spin it until it tightens all the way down. Remove the key. Put the cover on. And with it in there, you can see they can't open the latch, so you can't unattach it, or attach it.Go ahead and take it off. Now you can also order multiple locks that are keyed alike. In other words, if you want a few of these, like four or five let's say, and you wanted them all to have the same lock so you just have one key, you don't have to carry around multiples of keys, it can be done. What you'll do is you simply select the keyed alike option from the drop down menu that's on this product page, enter the number of locks you need into the quantity box, and then mark it keyed alike, and it'll get you that many. This lock is made in the U.S.A. Go ahead and tighten it down. Take the key out. Put the cover on. You're all ready to go.But that should do it for the review on the etrailer.com Trailer Coupler Lock, with the 3 3/8" Span.

This is the best product of its kind that I've found. The 1st one that I purchased 5 years ago served me well until I trailered an entire day before realizing that I had forgotten to lock it in place, leaving it on the tongue of my boat trailer. I particularly like this design because it can be "turned in"/ tightened until flush with the receiver, with no play whatsoever unlike some other designs that simply snap in place like a standard padlock and have sloppy play. I believe that locks are for the most part simply a deterrent to theft, not preventative. This design is attractive, very functional and reasonably priced. Ordered a pair of them for my daughter's family boat as well as my own. 686353

Perfect fit for my Champion bass boat trailer. Ordered the wrong one (my mistake). Excellent service on the exchange. Second lock I've ordered from etrailer. Will not hesitate to order again. Thanks! 686435

This product was sold to me to work with the 2 5/16” ball coupler, that I purchased at the same time. The shaft of this lock is smaller than the hole in the coupler, by a great margin. The lock fit in the coupler is sloppy, and could be cut off easily because of the miss match. Not good. If you order one, make sure the shaft diameter is correct for the coupler you intend to use it on. It probably works Ok on the correct coupler. 686333

The product is fine, but I am still trying to find a locking pin that is slightly larger in diameter and approximately the same length. Due to the play in couple due to the diameter of the pin, it has actually bent the locking pin. 686441

Most trailers have a lever to lock the ball latch that can use a common lock. My Featerlite trailer doesnt use that type lever and the lock must reach through the ball mount to secure the trailer. This long lock works perfectly, fits snug to retard a thief with bot cutters. I highly recommend it. 686335

The lock works really well on my car hauler trailer. I wouldn't have had to but I actually did improve it by sliding a piece of 5/16 inch (OD) steel gas line over the shaft and have reduced the slop at the hitch. 686322

  • Will Trailer Coupler Lock # e98888 Secure Boatmate Trailer with Surge Brakes
We do have a locking hitch pin that may work very well for you. I recommend our etrailer.com Coupler Lock, part # e98888. This is a 1/4 inch diameter pin that has a 3-3/8 inch span. This lock has a covered key slot that will help prevent corrosion. I have attached a product review video you can check out.

  • Coupler Lock Recommendation for a Demco Coupler
I really wish we had a coupler lock in the dimensions you listed, but the closest thing we offer is the part # e98888 that you referenced that has a 1/4 inch diameter pin that is 3-3/8 inches long. The difference would only be 1/16 of an inch so this lock should still work for you. There's no reason it wouldn't. Another option you have is a coupler lock like the part # DT25013KA. This lock can fit nearly any coupler and should work well for you.

  • How Theft-Proof is the etraiiler.com Coupler Lock # e98888
Locks are for keeping honest folks honest, just about any lock can eventually be defeated if the crook is determined enough. The lock you mention, part # e98888, provides what I would call minimal deterrence against theft. If there are two identical boat trailers parked side by side, one using the # e98888 lock, and the other unlocked, the lock will do its job and deter the crook from taking your trailer. One quick snip with some bolt cutters, and the lock will be defeated, but the...

Good news, I can help you figure out if this coupler lock will fit your Bulldog coupler. As long as your pin diameter on the Bulldog coupler is larger than a 1/4 inch and the span is no bigger than 3-3/8 inches, then this coupler lock will work for you. I pulled the Bulldog coupler # BD028287 you had looked at from our warehouse and a similar style 2-5/16 inch # BD028499 and measured the size of the lock pin that goes in the coupler. • Dimensions of etrailer Lock for Surge Brake Trailer Couplers
The etrailer.com Lock for Surge Brake Trailer Couplers, part # e98888, should work for your trailer hitch. This product has a center span of 3-3/8 inches and a pin diameter of 1/4-inch. The center span is the space between the two black end pieces. Since you need 3 inches of pin length this part should work just fine as it provides 3-3/8 inches. It has an overall tip-to-tip length of 6-3/4 inches. This part is available in keyed-alike multiples if required.

However, if you do not already have a hitch receiver lock then I recommend using something like the Bulldog Lifelong Trigger-Style Coupler Lock and 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # BD580404 instead. • Recommended Hitch Pin Lock For UFP A-60 Coupler
The coupler lock I recommend for your UFP A-60 Coupler is the Coupler Lock, part # e98888. Since the coupler measures 3-inches wide and the pin hole is 1/4 inch diameter the # 28012 will work great to secure the coupler. The lock has a covered key slot to keep dirt and helps prevent corrosion. This is a keyed-alike item so if you want more than one lock and need them all to use the same key you can use the drop-down box on the product page when ordering.

This coupler lock does feature a 3-3/8 inch usable span but the pin itself has a 1/4 inch diameter. This diameter is just a tad smaller than what you are looking for but it will still work on your coupler to either lock the trailer to the hitch ball when you're towing or to help deter theft when the trailer's left unattended.
