Video Transcript for Fastway Trailer Coupler Locks FA86-0015-305 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock. The universal design is going to protect most trailers from being towed away, so it's designed to provide maximum security for your unattended trailer. That's going to protect it from theft. It's going to use a multi-step uni-ball that fits into any size ball coupler. Now, this piece is a solid construction. It's not hollow like similar designs and models. The shackle has a really nice unique bend.

This is a reversible design that allows it to snug up tight to most type of couplers or coupler latches, including all the ones that you see here on the table, such as A-frame, straight channel, round tongue, flat plate, and surge-type couplers. It's also going to accommodate a variety of latching mechanisms, such as trigger, pin, thumb, and wrap-around yoke latches. It works great on all the ones that you see here on the table. Really nice, universal design that's going to provide maximum security to your unattended trailer. The unit features a tube key lock cylinder that provides better security than standard key mechanisms. It's a lot harder to pick, and it's more difficult to duplicate keys. It's also going to feature an anti-drill pin that discourages attempts to drill out the lock. The unit's also going to feature bolt-blocked locking system to prevent thieves from prying the lock open.

Inside this hole right there, there's going to be a small bolt that engages the shackle. Right now it'd be in the unlock position. You can see how that comes out just a little bit. It doesn't take much to secure the unit. That bolt that runs through there engages the drews 00:01:42 on the shackle to keep it from being pried off of the trailer coupler. Now, when it comes to the construction, we're looking at a hardened steel construction.

When it comes to the shackle, it's going to provide maximum cut-resistance. Chrome-plated finish does a great job at resisting rusting corrosion. Then we're looking at a solid dye-cast corrosion-resistant housing that's very strong and very durable. Two keys are included per lock. They are numbered. The keys are going to be unique to the universal lock that you choose.

This is going to fit 1 and 7/8 inch, 2 inch, and 2 and 5/16 inch ball couplers. You just need to make sure that the coupler width does not exceed 4 and 1/2 inches. The shackle diameter is 5/8 of an inch, and the unit's going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. I just want to show you how it installs and how easy it is to use. What you'll need to do is separate the 2 components, so just move it to the unlock position. It also has a nice dust cap that protects that lock opening. It's going to a great job at keeping out dirt and moisture. When you're ready to use it, all you need to do is make sure that the coupler is in the open position. Ball portion goes in there. Then, all you got to do it secure it, just as if you're hooking it up to your hitch ball. Then, install the shackle. You need to determine which way is going to work best for your application. For this one, I just want to make sure that the point is pointing back towards the trailer. It is a universal design, that way you can adjust it however you need to use the lock to fit your application the best. Then, we just move it to an unlocked position. Allow that shackle to go down as far as possible. Move the key to the locked position, and it removes from the core. Place on the dust cap, and that's on there. It's not going to come off. The only way to get it off is to use 1 of the 2 keys to unlock the unit. That's going to do it for today's look. The Fastway Universal Coupler Lock.

Review from a similar Universal Coupler Lock in Trailer Coupler Locks

very strong and sturdy BUT has two small problems the reason for not giving 4-5 stars they have to be removed and oiled every three months if you don't you will have hell of a time unlocking them, at first you think the key is not working and then you think that the lock has jammed to aid in this aggravation the lock will not release unless you keep key turned ( not spring loaded, they saved money by not adding this feature)(mistake)a a bit hard to hit hitch with hammer and keep key turned and not break key also tolerance is way to tight which of course leads to main reason for it seizing up. Fix the key and a little most tolerance or do not use it for long term storage. yes I kept the lock clean of dirt and debris.

Comments
it works great but would have liked some information on maintenance WD40 or 3in1 oil or Masterblaster and and where to put it in the lock or the pins that lock it had some problem with them locking up if they sat to long with out being opened or closed have five trailers 3 of them can set for months be for i use them BUT the good news nobody has even made an attempt to steal them like i said good stuff well built i trim trees for a living i get robbed more than the bank

Review from a similar Universal Coupler Lock in Trailer Coupler Locks

I wanted to get a good quality lock for my new trailer and looked at several different videos showing plus or minuses of this type of lock. I wanted a good quality unit which would not break the bank. etrailer came through. I am pleased with my purchase and already have it installed.

Comments
The lock is still going strong and has held up well. Lubricate it regularly since it is out in the weather but overall a good product

Review from a similar Universal Coupler Lock in Trailer Coupler Locks

The ball lock I purchased from etrailer.com is the perfect tool for the job. It has several locking positions for different height tongue assemblies and one which was perfect for mine. The lock is smaller than the one I replaced, rendering it much less obtrusive. The chrome coloring also helps it blend better with the hitch, so if you use it while camping your trailer has a “friendlier” appearance to fellow campers. I really like the fact it came with 4 keys and case hardening makes it even safer and lighter than my old lock. Best of all, however, was the superb customer service I received from etrailer.com. Before, during, and yes, even after I received my lock they followed up to make sure I was happy. 5 star service. Would definitely recommend them to my trailering friends.

Comments
What an unexpected pleasure to open my e-mail and find a follow up message from you a year after I purchased from you.I hope things are going well for both you and etrailer.com. Even though I have not had the need to purchase any additional parts for my trailer in the intervening year, I continue to recommend your company to those of my friends who are still restoring their trailers. I hope many of them have used your company for their parts orders and are as happy as I have been with your stellar service and great products. Ive attached a few photos for you of my current set up. One shows the ball lock in place so if others wish to know what it would look like installed you may share it with them feel free to edit out my chickens, she says with a laugh. The PDF file is a copy of the front page of our local newspaper when my trailer made the Christmas day cover. And the last photo was taken in October at Lake Skinner just to prove that my baby is not a trailer queen we actually go camping on a quite regular basis we went out 8 times last year. Ok, having shared my baby pictures with you, I would also like to tell you a somewhat sad tale. I have a fellow Sister-On-The-Fly all female camping group, who 2 months ago had her trailer stolen...right out of her driveway at her home. She was devastated to say the least. She put this sad news out on the vintage e-mail websites and, fortunately for her, the vintage trailer community leapt into action and she began receiving steady e-mails about the progress of her stolen trailer from those who spotted it along the way. Enough e-mails in fact that the local law enforcement was able to follow them and was able to recover her trailer, amazingly enough. I ran into her at a recent trailer gathering and found out she did not have a ball lock on it when it was taken, and Ive made it part of my discussions with the ladies on our trips to mention the necessity of locking your trailer, both in your driveway and on trips we had another one taken, boldly during daylight, at a vintage rally!. I show them how the lock works and recommend they contact etrailer.com for one. They like mine because it is much less industrial looking and that matters to the ladies.Well to keep this from becoming a novel, I suppose I should sign off and let you get back to business, Patrick. Thank you again for checking in, that was truly amazing. Ill continue to recommend you and etrailer.com and when I next need parts and vintage trailers always do, be assured I will contact you first.Have a great day, and thank you for helping to keep my Aunt Bea safe and where she belongs.Best regards,Maggie

Review from a similar Universal Coupler Lock in Trailer Coupler Locks

The lock seems extremely robustly made. My trailer has a wide flange around the coupler and the stepped design of the bail fits perfectly. The circular keyway is secure and the casting is smooth. The teeth on both sides of the bail provide more secure latching than my one-sided prior lock. The main lock piece is smooth on the bottom preventing someone from hooking under the lock and just towing the trailer away. My prior lock had a lip that allowed the trailer to be moved with a tow hook. My only complaint is that it came with two very sharp, very pointy metal pins sticking out of the bail, maybe to secure it in the package. I had to get a pair of pliers to remove these before they ripped my hands up.

Comments
I noted the same problem with the sharp clevis ? pins protruding from the bail. They do not seem to serve any purpose and there is no information in the instruction sheet that would indicate removal of the pins would somehow diminish the security of the lock. At first I assumed they prevented the shackle from being pushed too far into the lock but that was not the case. Mine are coming out and if it violates the warranty at least I wont have ripped my fingers and hands open.

Review from a similar Universal Coupler Lock in Trailer Coupler Locks

I just purchased several items from etrailer. See photo for trailer lock and a new set of chains. I keep my trailer on the street and thought I had better start securing a little better. This hitch lock installed easily enough. I purchased three of them keyed alike for three different trailers, work trailer, camping trailer, and utility trailer. Super easy. This is my third purchase from etrailer over the years, and the customer support is out of this world. Actual people who call and email to follow up. etrailer sets the standard for what customer support should be.

We were using a MasterLock that never felt secure and are absolutely thrilled with this lock. This Diversi-Tech lock fits securely and won't be pried off easily like the MasterLock would. I highly recommend this Diversi-Tech lock. I definitely feel much more confident using this lock when parking my trailer at a show or event. Also, a piece of advice - turn the lock backwards, so the keyhole faces back towards the trailer. This makes it much more difficult for a thief to use a drill or large tools to hack the lock.

Great product & great service. We ordered this lock for our 2018 Jayco Jay Feather travel trailer. After buying and returning similar locks at our local camper and automotive stores that did not fit, we turned to the internet and found etrailer.com. The website made it easy to shop. It showed the dimensions for this lock. We knew it would fit when we received it. We are extremely satisfied with the service and product we received. Thanks, etrailer!

Review from a similar Universal Coupler Lock in Trailer Coupler Locks

Nicely built, parts fit well together and seems well designed. Does the job well. Being chromed steel the lock is quite visible when locked onto the hitch and I suspect that alone would act as a deterrent to a prospective thief. I bought two units and they give me peace of mind.

Comments
After a year. . . no problems! Nice thing about these locks is that you need to use the key to attach the lock that way you wont accidently lock it with a miss-placed key! Almost foolproof. . . at least David proof!

Very impressed with etrailer.com. The staff is very knowledegable about the products they sell. I had a similar lock by another mfg that is identical to the Dt25013. It sub stained an attempted theft from the use of a prying crow bar. This lock is tuff. I ordered a replacement just in case they may have weaken it. I had the old lock for 8 years. The chrome started rusting after 6 1/2 years but no big deal considering it's been exposed to all the elements.

I wish I could tell you more, I've only had this a week. It looks like a quality product and installed quickly and easily on our 1957 Pathfinder 16ft Travel Trailer. With this old hitch I did not know if it would work but it looks like it was designed especially for it.

RUST - Will significantly rust if you live near the coast. I bought 3 of these - all keyed the same - for 3 different trailers. The 2 I use frequently have lots of surface rust, but still work. The one I use to secure a trailer that doesn't get used often rusted solid. Couldn't turn the key. Once I got the key to move with PB Blaster, the lock mechanism wouldn't move - would not release from the bar. I have coated all these locks with corrosion protectant periodically and it still rusted. Had to cut it off.
