Manual-Adjust Brake

With repeated use of this brake assembly, the brake shoes may move out of alignment, causing less efficient braking performance. To keep the brake shoes aligned and the brake assembly performing correctly, you should perform routine maintenance.

This brake assembly should be adjusted after installation and then as needed for the life of the brake. To adjust the brake, use a brake adjustment screw tool (sold separately) to turn the adjustment gear on the inside of the assembly. Continue to turn the gear until the drum surrounding the brake catches on the brake pads enough so that the hub can no longer be turned easily by hand. Then reverse the gear by about 10 clicks. A properly adjusted brake should drag slightly on the brake drum.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Brakes AKEBRK-35R Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 10" Right Hand Electric Brake Assembly for 3500 lb axles. Electric brakes are easier to install and they offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. An electric brake assembly will require only an electric brake controller which we do sell separately, so there's no actuator hydraulic lines necessary. The brakes used on this assembly are lined with an automotive-grade friction material. This friction material's fully bonded. It is not riveted to the shoes. It gives you a longer life and more braking torque.

The lining also uses tapered edges and they do a circular grinding of it to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock-up. This is a manual adjustment brake assembly, so it does need periodic manual adjustments. It does have a fine-tooth brake adjustment gear down here at the bottom. This allows for more precise setting and there is no break-in period needed for these. The backing plate on this is a nice e-coated finish to help resist wear and corrosion. The other nice thing is they do include a rubber adjuster plug that goes in the adjuster opening.

There's a hole right here that you can put your tool through to adjust your brakes. Lots of times these assemblies don't have plugs in them, and what will happen is dirt sometimes can get into there. Once you have your drum on here, the dirt can get in there and cause problems, so you do want to have a plug in there to prevent any dirt or debris from getting into your brake assembly. Also, if you'll notice it does come with the mounting bolts already installed on here to install on your brake flange. The nuts and the lock washers, they are sold separately. This brake assembly is certified for QAI, which is Quality Assurance International ...

and CSA, which is Canadian Standards Association. The size on this is a 10" by 2 1/4" passenger side electric trailer brake assembly. Passenger side is the right hand size. Now, the size, when they say 10" by 2 1/4, basically what they're saying is the 10" is the diameter. Right here you put a ruler on it.

You see the 10", and the 2 1/4 is the width of the shoe, so 2 1/4", and again this is the right hand or passenger side. The easiest way to tell that . now when you do get it it does have stickers on it that'll say "right hand" and "left hand" but when those stickers come off the easiest way to tell is look at the pad of the shoe and you'll notice that this shoe has shorter pad than this one. This one's a lot longer than this one. The shorter shoe will always point towards the front of the trailer, so that means the shorter one, if it's on this side points to the front. This is the right hand side or passenger side. This is designed for axles that are rated 3500 lbs. This is designed also to fit a 4-bolt brake mounting flange. You can see the 4 bolts here, so you want to make sure the brake-mounting flange on your axle is designed for the 4-bolt pattern. This does use the 10" drums and this is an electric brake assembly so you do need to supply power to this magnet for it to work properly. If you'll notice, on the back of the assembly there's 2 green wires that come out. One of these will connect to your brake feed to supply power to the magnet, and the other one connects to the ground. They're both green, so either wire can be used for either function. It doesn't matter which one's hooked up to which. That should do it for the review of the 10" Right Hand Electric Brake Assembly for 3500 lb axle.

The magnetic pick up and brake pads were all worn so it was time to replace them. The backing plate fit and in stalled easily . The shoes had to adjusted with the drum was installed. The butt splice I order didn’t work because the one had six wires on one side and they all would not fit in so be prepared for that . 484232

Purchased new backing plates assemblies and drum assemblies 2 to replace worn out parts and 2 for installation on an axle that didn't have brakes on at all. Parts fit great and have been working flawlessly for a year. Great parts, prices, and shipping time. Thanks, Brad B. 409165

thank u etrailer for sending me 2 extra nuts & 2 extra mounting studs. the best way to remove a bad stud is to drill it out. As u know im the one who had a mounting nut go on & turn both directions after it was put on. i could not back the nut off to replace the stud. i took a drill bit a little smaller than the stud & drilled the head of the mounting stud off. i drilled pased the 4 hole plate, knocked the nut off the back side, & taped the remainder of the stud out of the hole. No damage was done to the plate. Taking a grinder to it would have been a bad deal. The only thing i wished was in my hardware would have been a simple drawing of which the right & left sides of the trailer were. i had to go back & spend most of the day & swap both sides of the trailer after i done a complete job of putting on the brake assemblies. I did averything i thought to do to get it right the first time. I got it wrong! A simple way would be just to remind everyone that the longer brake pad goes to the rear of the trailer. I now have everything back together & everything works fine. What a nightmare, but now im in good shape. I would like to have better tires thou. Stronger & taller tires. I have looked at the contender st225/75r15 with the white rims. Soon i hope to chat with you on these tires. Again thanks for sending me the extra hardware. I will most diffinitly pass your website out to ones that i know. randy , fully custom built rv out of a v noise 16 foot cargo trailer, spent one year to build.... 306651

Good products at great prices. Got a used trailer and rebuilt it for $1800 which includes the cost of the trailer. 360270

- AKEBRK-35R

by:

Very nice setup for the cost, no doubt. My only complaint is that I was doing a 4 wheel brake conversion, as in adding brakes to one axle, and the nuts and washers that hold the backing plates on, were not included. This created a major headache, since I was doing the job by myself. Had to disconnect trailer from truck, lock up the shop, and drive around looking for 8 7/16" fine thread nuts, which wasn't as easy as it sounds....For the negligible price of them, they should be included for not only the people doing a brake addition, but for anyone doing a brake replacement as well. That aside, install was smooth as silk...and trailer stops much quicker and easier with 4 wheel brakes...especially with a heavyweight old Chevelle on it...I believe I will swap out the original backing plates from the original braking axle, just for piece of mind. Thanks for the quick shipping! 265421

First I will start of I am probably offer kill in my research for things I will buy. I felt very comfortable moving forward with the purchase of these products. The price was in beatable, I looked. I was weary that the wiring would be cut due to shippinglike so many others said, but glad to say I got lucky or e trailer in my opinion looked at reviews and made corrections in packaging. I have never been let down from e trailer over the past few years I have done business with them. The products installed perfectly. I changed from hydraulic surge to electric, so I needed a new couple. The install was simple, and towing is much more solid by getting rid of the sloppy slide action coupler with the surge brakes. 407600

Comments

The conversion from hydraulic to electric is something I should have done when I first bought the trailer. The parts are working great! I want to say things are working better now than when the trailer was new. It pulls easier, sways less, and stops with confidence.

  • How to Choose the Correct Brake Assembly for Trailer Axles
  • You will need to do some measuring to determine if the 10 Inch Electric Brake Assembly LH, item # AKEBRK-35L, is the correct assembly for your trailer. Measure the diameter of the mounted brake shoe, the width of the lining and the distance between the mounting holes on center. It may also help if you can determine the manufacturer of your brake. Once you have these measurements you can choose the correct assembly for your axles. It is recommended to change both of the brake assemblies...

The hubs we offer, part # AKHD-545-35-K use # L68149 inner bearings...

  • Can Electric Brakes Be Installed On One of The 3,500-Lb Axles of a Tandem Axle Utility Trailer
  • I would first check with the laws in your state as far as how many brakes are required for the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of your tandem axle trailer. Some states require brakes on both axles of a tandem axle trailer. If brakes are allowed on one axle I would recommend to put them on the front axle since that is the axle that will be bearing the most weight of the trailer. Also, when stopping the trailer, the weight of the trailer will be shifting to the front axle more than...

  • Replacement Electric Trailer Brakes for 1998 Coleman Fleetwood Sunridge Pop-Up Camper
  • We can help you with new electric drum brakes for your Coleman pop-up! You will just want to confirm a few details in order to select suitable replacement brake assemblies. First, check the axle's weight rating. This should be on a plate or sticker on the axle itself. Note you need to select a matching set of left- and right-hand brakes. You also need to make sure you choose the same size brake as what is now on the trailer, both in diameter and width, and the same mounting bolt pattern....

  • Replacement Axle for 2,000 Pound Dexter Axle on a Pop-Up Camper
  • We have straight axles that are close to the measurements you have provided, see link, but the spring seats would have to be moved and none of them have brake mounting flanges. I propose a different approach by using a Timbren axle-less system # ASR2KHDS01. This system will provide the "axle" as well as the suspension in one unit plus the suspension part will not wear out nearly as quickly as traditional leaf springs because the rubber won't corrode. They are also set up for electric...

  • Trailer Brake Assemblies to Replace Axletek B10E-02
  • I was able to find info on the part number you listed and you have 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch brake assemblies that are for a 3,500 lb axle. The part # AKEBRK-35R is the correct right hand side assembly for a replacement. For the left hand side you would want the part # AKEBRK-35L. I attached an install video for these for you to check out as well.

  • Which Hub Drums and Brake Assemblies for 3500lb Axle on Utility Trailer
  • It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on what you need. If your existing hubs use the 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle, and the surface of your spindle where the grease seal rides is around 1.719 inches, the # AKHD-545-35-K is the proper hub/drum. You can go with standard brake assemblies, like # AKEBRK-35L for the left side and # AKEBRK-35R for the right. However, I'd recommend going with self adjusting assemblies like part # AKEBRK-35R-SA or the right sided and # AKEBRK-35L-SA...

  • Electric Trailer Brakes Won't Release After I Hit Brakes
  • On a 5-way connection, the blue wire is normally for the brake controller as you stated. However the color of the wire in this case probably won't help us as it is evident this connection has already been tampered with. I have attached a trailer wiring diagram for you. The focus should be on the function of the wire and not on the color of the wire, so we can pair the correct functions at the trailer and vehicle connection points. To test the trailer wires, you can get a 12 volt batter...

  • Replacement Drum Brakes and Hubs for 3500-lb AL-KO Axles
  • You can use larger brakes and hubs by matching up the brake mounting pattern to your flanges and by selecting new hubs that use the same bearing set as your current hubs. Matching the bearings will ensure the new hubs fit properly on your spindles. The linked photo shows the usual location of bearing numbers. If you wanted to use 4-bolt AxleTek # AKEBRK-35L and # AKEBRK-35R electric drum brakes and if your hubs use inner/outer bearings # L68149 and # L44649 you could use hub/drum # AKHD-545-35-K....

  • Where are the Ground Wires Located on Electric Trailer Brakes
  • Electric brakes have 2 wires located at the back. One is for power and the other is for ground (it doesn't matter which is used for which function). The ground wires should be connected to the trailer frame. The only other place that would carry a ground is the main ground wire that is connected to the pin in the 5 o'clock position on the 7-Way of your trailer (see attached picture). I have attached a video of the trailer brake assemblies # AKEBRK-35L and # AKEBRK-35R being installed...

  • Timbren Axle-Less Suspension for Use with 30 Inch Tires and 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern Hubs
  • You can use 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern hub and drum assemblies on the Timbren Axle-Less system # ASR2KHDS03. For a hub and drum assembly that will work I recommend # AKHD-655-35-EZ-K. You can then add electric brake assembly # AKEBRK-35L for the left side and # AKEBRK-35R for the right side. Replacement parts are readily available for the hub and drum assemblies and the brakes. The Timbren system shouldn't ever need any part replaced but if it does we can take care of you there, too. Each...

  • Recommended Replacement Electric 10 by 2-1/4 Inch Brake Assemblies for 2007 Flagstaff RV
  • All 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assemblies are for 3500 lb axles, so there's not any worries about compatibility. You can choose between a standard brake assembly like part # AKEBRK-35L for the left hand side and # AKEBRK-35R for the right hand or a self-adjusting brake assembly like the # AKEBRK-35L for the left side or # AKEBRK-35R for the right hand. Although both sets of brakes I mentioned would be compatible with your axles, I'd recommend the self-adjusting brake assemblies. The self...

  • The right-hand electric drum brakes we offer for 3500-lb axles are the 10 x 2-1/4-inch size. These are offered in manual-and self-adjust types that can be seen on the linked page. For example, for a self-adjusting right brake you can use Dexter # AKEBRK-35R-SA or part # AKEBRK-35R for a manual adjust brake. These fit a 4-bolt brake flange with holes spaced 2-7/8-inches on center. Your axle should have a sticker indicating its weight rating. You'll want to ensure you know the capacity...
