Disc Brakes

An increasing number of trailer owners are switching over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, as opposed to the many moving parts you find with drum brakes. This means that with disc brakes there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to repair or replace, thus reducing the cost of maintenance.

Performance increases as well. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking even at highway speeds, unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a much shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Swing-Away Trailer Brake Actuator

Titan's complete disc brake kit makes the conversion easy. Designed for single-axle trailers, this kit includes not only the disc brake assemblies themselves - along with all the necessary lines, fittings and mounting hardware - it also contains a swing-away actuator. The swing-away design creates a convenient, space-saving, foldaway tongue, letting you easily store your trailer even in the smallest garage. This hydraulic brake actuator has a higher psi rating for disc brake applications and includes an electric reverse lockout so that you can back up without activating your trailer's brakes.

The electric lockout is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The included solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Hydraulic Line Kit

Note: If you intend to run brake lines along the axle of your trailer to install disc brakes - as is often done for boat trailers - you will need 1 additional hoses (T4890700 - sold separately) and 1 extra hose clip (T0776400 - sold separately) with bracket (T0776300 - sold separately) to complete the installation.

Video Transcript for Titan Trailer Brakes - Disc Brakes - T4843300 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Titan single axle disc brake kit, and swing away actuator with electric lock out, for 3,500 pound axle. Now this all includes the kit, has everything you need to switch your trailer over to disc brakes. And disc brakes'll deliver better performance. Gives you consistent stopping, even at highway speeds, and shorter stopping distances than most drum brakes. Now this part is two disc brake kits. It includes the dacromet plated hub and rotor assemblies, the dacromet calipers with the mounting brackets, and the hardware to install. It does attach, you can see, to a four bolt brake flange.

Comes with the bearings, the grease seals, the bearing protectors, and the bearing races are already pre installed in the hubs. Also, comes with this swing away brake actuator. It's a space saving, fold away design. The actuator will actually pivot, right here, back to create a shorter tongue for storage. The fold away portion, you can set it up to either swing right, or left. It is a hydraulic actuator that'll synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow vehicle brakes.

Does use a electric reverse lock out. There's a cylinoid on the back here, that'll let you reverse without actuating your trailer's brake. Basically what happens is the cylinoid there will activate automatically when you shift into reverse. You notice, has a nice zinc platting, which is corrosion resistant. And if you notice the hook with the cord on it, that's your break away kit. That's all included.

Over here, it has the hydraulic line kit, with all the brake lines and fittings you need for a single axle. This is all a bolt on installation. The mounting hardware is not included, does require some assembly. Again, the application, this is single axle trailers. Axle capacity is 3,500 pounds.

The wheel size that'll fit on this, will be 14 inch diameter, to 15 inch diameter. On the rotor itself, the overall diameter edge to edge is 9-3/4 inches. The bolt pattern on the rotor is a five on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. We have mentioned on the caliper mounting bracket, you can see the four holes that's designed to bolt onto a four bolt brake flange. And on the actuator, the ball size that this fits on to is a two inch diameter. The pivot length, in other words the pivot is right here, so the total pivot length of this, is 21-1/2 inches. It is designed to mount onto a three inch wide channel tongue. Weight capacity on this actuator is 7,500 pounds, maximum tongue weight capacity of 750 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Titan single axle disc brake kit with the swing away actuator and electric lock out, for 3,500 pound axle.

Very pleased with this kit. As stated in description - does not include mounting hardware - meaning the 4 bolts needed to mount to frame. I used 1/2inch bolts that are 1 inch long - ideally would be 1-1/4 inch long. The spindle nut/washer and cotter pin are also not included, though everything is there for installation. Appears to be a high quality finish and I received it within 4 days of ordering. The actuator was missing the cap, though customer service promptly shipped me a replacement. 686580

Easy nuts and bolts installation. No more adjusting drum brakes. Swing away tongue gives me an extra 20" of clearance to get the boat in storage. 307768

Titan disc brake conversion kit. Worked great. Missing some instructions on the drum and brake assembly, but it was pretty self explanatory. I would recommend it easy Beyer than drum brakes. 180250

  • Parts Necessary to Add Disc Brakes to Boat Trailer
Putting disc brakes on a boat trailer is a common upgrade and there are many kits as well as individual parts available. For instance the Titan Disc Brake Kit and Swing-Away Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Single, 3,500-lb Axle # T4843300 is a common kit but it will only fit 3,500 lb trailers. I've attached an article that outlines all you need to add disc brakes to a trailer. To get the information needed to ensure you get the proper kit or parts to create the complete setup I need...

  • How to Determine if the Titan Disc Brake Kit # T4843300 will Fit a Trailer
To determine if the Titan Disc Brake Kit # T4843300 that you referenced would work on your trailer will require you to remove one of the hubs on your trailer currently so that we can figure out what spindle you have. You will need to get the bearing numbers out of the hub or use a caliper to get exact dimensions of the spindle to determine what you have. If the bearings of your hub are # L68149 and # L44649 then this kit will fit. You will need to make sure that your trailer wheels have...

  • Converting Surge Brake Actuator from Disc to Drum Brake Pressure
Drum and disk brake actuators use different pressures for operation. Drum brake actuators typically produce 1000-psi pressure while disc brake actuators produce 1500 or 1600-psi pressure. The higher pressure of a disc actuator could blow out the wheel cylinders of a drum brake assembly so you cannot use the higher-pressure disc actuator with drum brakes. Depending on your actuator you may be able to install a pressure reducer value to drop the pressure from the 1500-1600 range down...

  • Converting Hydraulic Drum Trailer Brakes to Disc Brakes on a Boat Trailer
You could put disc brakes on just the one axle, but I recommend going ahead and installing them on both since the trailer is set up for it already and there is a different pressure required for disc brakes. The difference is between 1200 psi for drum and 1600 psi for disc brakes so there is a possibility of adding too much pressure to a drum brake axle. Changing both axles to disc brakes will reduce wear and tear on both the trailer and the tow vehicle so a little extra expense now will...

  • Parts Needed to Add Disc Brakes to Tandem Axle Trailer and Later Convert to Electric Over Hydraulic
Using the # T4843300 Titan kit in the mean time for one axle and then adding brakes to the second axle and converting to electric over hydraulic is certainly an option. And it may even be the best way for you to do it depending on your situation. However, it may be a better option, and save you money in the long run to put disc brakes on both axles at one time. Buying the additional parts later to add the additional brakes will be more costly. Once both axles have brakes all you...

I have attached a photo that shows how you can run the included lines for the # T4843300 disc brake kit if you plan on running the line down the center of the trailer. There are a couple of additional items you will need to run it this way. You will need a flex line to go between the tee mounted to the axle and the hard line running from the actuator. This is because the entire axle will be moving. You will need part # T4890700, part # T0776400, and part # T0776300. If you run the brake...

  • Troubleshooting Reverse Light Fuse Issue with Surge Brake Coupler Electric Reverse Lockout Solenoid
The amps sent to that reverse lockout solenoid on a system like # T4843300 will be very small and will vary from vehicle to vehicle. The issue must be in the ground wire connection or the connection to your reverse light power because there is no reason for it to draw even close to 10 amps. There has to be a short in the circuit somewhere to cause a fuse to blow. You will want to check your trailer connections to ensure there is not a power draw from another circuit at the same time...

  • How to Connect a Surge Brake Actuator to Activate the Reverse Lockout Function
There are 2 wires that are coming out of the actuator in the Titan Disc Brake Kit # T4843300. Since the Titan Disc Brake Kit and Swing-Away Actuator w/ Electric Lockout # T4843300 has a hinge built into it you'd want to attach safety chains to the tongue of the coupler before the hinge and coupler. If you need some we have the part # E950 which have a 4,000 lb capacity each.

  • Can Hydraulic Disc or Electric Drum Brakes Be Added to Demco Tow Dolly
It may indeed be possible to add brakes, like the Titan hydraulic disc brake kit # T4843300 you referenced, to your tow dolly but a few things need to be checked. Generally it is preferable to use electric drum brakes on a tow dolly since their power can be adjusted by the brake controller that would be installed in the tow vehicle. A disc actuator requires the forward-momentum of the dollied vehicle to engage the brakes, and this would make it essential to match the actuator to the weight...
