The unique free-backing design, patented by DICO, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

This product perfectly replaced my tongue master cylinder on my 1992 Capri boat trailer. It bolted right up and the brake line thread was the same. It was super easy. It is a huge improvement!

These folks are top notch to deal with! The customer service whether the order was placed online or on the phone is/was fantastic!

The product fits perfectly on my VM trailer. The only issue was my brand new Craftsman 3/8 Flare wrench would not fit onto the bleeder nut. Fortunately, it is new right now and i can use any wrench to turn it. It will not be easy to bleed the line in the future once the part gets older and the nut will be tough to loosen.

  • Recommended Replacement Drum Brakes for Boat Trailer with 3500-lbs Axles
I recommend using the Hydraulic Brake Kit - Uni-Servo - Free Backing - Dacromet - 10" - Left/Right Hand - 3,500 lbs # AKFBBRK-35-D, which will work with your current setup and are perfect because the Dacromet plating is designed to withstand exposure to water; so they're ideal for boat trailers. These brakes are free backing, so they'll allow your trailer to backup regardless of whether or not you've got a lockout feature on your actuator, and they'll work with a breakaway kit. If you've...

  • How to Choose the Right Brake Assemblies for my Trailer
They are generally pretty universal. You want to check to see how many bolts there are on the brake flange, get overall diameter and the overall thickness of the shoes. For instance the very popular Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35-SA is a left and right assembly that is 10" in diameter and has shoes 2-1/4" wide. These assemblies use the four bolt brake flange. I've included the installation video of them we made if you want to check it out. If you have a different size...

  • Hydraulic Drum Brakes for 3,750 lb Axle For 15 Inch Wheels
The Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit - Free Backing # T4071600-500 will fit so long as your drum is 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide, and you have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange. This is a pretty common set up so it will likely fit but you'll want to make sure, and these brakes will also work with either a 14 inch or 15 inch wheel like you have. These brakes are for a 3,750 lb axle and would only require Mounting Hardware # BRKH10A. I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as...

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to Trailer
Thanks for the photo and it looks like you have an idler hub so before adding electric brakes you need to switch to a hub and drum assembly. To do this you need to know the weight rating of your axle, and also what bearings your current hub has. You will need to take apart your current hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use Digital Caliper...

  • What Size Brakes Are Used on 5200-lbs Dexter Axles
Typically a 5200-lbs axle will have 12" drums and brakes, so you're going to want to use something like the # AKEBRK-7-SA, which are a 12" electric brake assembly that are self adjusting so you won't have to worry about your brakes being out of adjustment again. You can measure the inside of the drums to confirm this, but 12" brakes are fairly standard on a 5200-lbs axle.
