If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.
The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.
Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.
Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.
The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.
In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.
Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.
If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.
For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.
And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 12 Inch Hub and Rotor Disc Brake assembly set. This set is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum breaks to disc brakes so you can get the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. So the two assemblies here are going to replace the brakes for your single axle with a capacity of 5,200 pounds up to 6,000 pounds and the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 12 inches in diameter and we've got the six on five and a half inch bolt pattern. So this is gonna fit with your 15 inch wheels and larger.
So upgrading your trailer from your drum brakes to disc brakes is going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance. It's also going to provide smoother, more controlled braking than you're used to experiencing with your drum brakes. So it's gonna help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling as you're going down the road. These do feature ceramic brake pads that are going to help increase your stopping power and you can't really see it, but there is a large two and a quarter inch diameter stainless steel piston that's gonna provide fast, responsive breaking for you. Another benefit of having disc breaks is that they are going to require less maintenance than your drum breaks.
There's fewer small parts that could fail that need to be re-tightened and that sort of thing so it's gonna save you time and money in the long run. Having the one piece hub and rotor assembly is going to reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. It does have the vented design, as you can see here, that's gonna help dissipate the heat faster and prevent premature brake pad wear. So they will hold up well for you. They are a high quality automotive grade construction so they are gonna be very long lasting.
We've got a Dacromet finish on the hub rotor calipers and the mounting bracket here on the back. So that's going to help resist rust and corrosion. It is going to have a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating so it is gonna be a great option if you are putting these on a boat trailer or in a trailer that's used in coastal areas or heavily treated roads that's gonna have a lot of contact with salt. These are gonna hold up really well for you. So one caveat of switching out your brakes, your disc brakes, are gonna require a higher line pressure than your standard drum brakes.
So you are gonna need a high hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1500 PSI or above to activate your brakes. So if you don't already have those, we do have them available here at etrailer.com. But this kit is going to provide you with the two Dacromet plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the pre-installed half inch wheel bolts as well as the 12 half inch zinc plated steel lug nuts so you can get your wheels secured in place. Also gonna have the two Dacromet plated cast iron calipers here and those two Dacromet plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. These do have the five bolt brake flange configuration so they are going to very easy to get mounted on your axle so you can support those calipers. Now these aren't actually when you go to install them, they're gonna be mounted on the side. I just have them on top right now for demonstration purposes. It's easier to balance them, but when you actually go to mount this, the calipers are gonna be on the side of your assembly here so keep that in mind. That's actually a benefit. It's gonna put the strain on the bracket instead of on the hardware. So the hardware will hold up better for you so kind of a nice design there for that. And then of course we're gonna have the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts here to get everything put together for us. So in addition to all those components, we're also going to have our inner and outer bearings. You can see those part numbers on the screen there. We're also gonna have our inner and outer races that are pre-installed on our units. You can see that information there as well. So the bearings are going to make sure that we have nice smooth rotation around the axle and the races are where those bearings fit in. This is going to be an oil setup. So we've got a kit here with our two oil seals that go on the back side. Those have a 2.25 inch inner diameter and then a 3.376 outer diameter. And then we're also going to have the two oil caps with the 2.44 outer diameter and an eight ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil to make sure that everything is well lubricated in there and operating smoothly. So like I said, these are gonna be a great option for you if you are wanting to upgrade from your drum breaks. These are gonna last a while for you with that Dacromet coating on there so I think these are gonna be a great option. And that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
