Ideal for Saltwater Boat Trailers

Kodiak disc brakes installed on a trailer

If you take your boat down to the coast every weekend, you know how corrosive saltwater can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.

The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. And the stainless steel calipers are rustproof. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.

Get a Safer, More Comfortable Ride

Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

diagram comparing the number of parts in drum brakes and disc brakes

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

close up view of vented rotor

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.

In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

mounting bracket supporting disc brake

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure even bolt pattern

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Video Transcript for Review of Kodiak Trailer Brakes - 12" Hub/Rotor Dacromet/Stainless Disc Brakes - KOD36FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 12 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is gonna allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so you can get the superior performance of disc brakes. We do have the two brake assemblies here, so that's going to allow you to upgrade a single axle with a 5,200 pound to 6,000 pound capacity and the number 42 spindles. And this does have a 12 inch rotor diameter and you can see it's got the 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. So this is going to fit with your wheels that are 15 inches and larger.

Upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is going to have several different benefits. It's going to help dramatically shorten your stopping distance and it's also going to provide a smoother, more controlled braking experience than you are used to with your drum brakes. So it is gonna help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling as you're going down the road. We do have these ceramic brake pads here that are going to increase your stopping power and it's difficult to see, but up here at the top we do have that large 2 1/4 inch diameter stainless steel piston that's gonna provide fast responsive braking for you. So in addition to better performance, these are also going to help save you time and money because they require less maintenance than your drum brakes.

There's fewer small components that could fail and need to be replaced. So these do have a one-piece hub and rotor assembly so it's gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. They also have the vented design as you can see there. That's gonna help dissipate your heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. These are a nice high quality automotive grade construction so they are gonna be very long lasting for you.

Our hub and rotors and our brackets here on the back side, if I turn this around so you can see that a little bit better, those are all Dacromat finish, have a Dacromat finish on them, so that's going to help resist rust and corrosion. The Dacromat finish is rated for 300 to 400 hours of salt spray so it is going to hold up really well for you. Then our calipers are a stainless steel construction so they are gonna be rust proof. So this is gonna be a great option for your salt water boats or boat trailers or trailers that are used on heavily treated roads during the winter and that sort of thing so where they're gonna get a lot of exposure to salt. And these we're gonna hold up really well for you.

Now the one caveat with this brakes is that they do require a higher line pressure then your standard drum brakes, so you are gonna need to make sure you have a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1500 psi or above to make sure that you can activate your brakes properly. If you don't already have those, we do sell them separately here at etrailer.com and so you can get your whole setup ready to go. But this kit is going to include these two Dacromat-plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the six pre-installed half-inch wheel bolts each. We're also gonna get the 12 half-inch stainless steel lug nuts to hold your wheel in place. We have the two stainless steel calipers and then those two Dacromat-plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. As you can see, these do have the five bolt brake configuration so it is gonna be very easy to get these mounted on your axle. Now I do wanna point out I've got these displayed here on the top just for balance and demonstration but when you actually go to install these they are gonna be installed on the side and having that side support design is actually going to help put the weight on the mounting bracket itself instead of on your bolts. So it's gonna help your bolts last longer, so a nice design there. And then of course we are gonna have the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts to get those calipers mounted in place. In addition to all of that, we are also going to get our inner and outer bearings. These are going to help make sure that everything is running smoothly, rotating around. We have our inner and outer races that are pre-installed here and that's where those bearings are going to fit in. You can see all those part numbers on the screen there. And then this is an oil lubrication design, so it is going to give you these oil seals for the inside here. These do have an inner diameter of 2 1/4 of an inch and an outer diameter of 3.376 inches. And then we're also going to get our outer caps here gonna hold the oil in, and those have an outer diameter of 2.44 inches. And then we'll also get one ounce, or sorry, eight-ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil to make sure that everything is staying lubricated and running smoothly in there. So like I said, these are gonna be a great option for your trailers that come in contact with salt pretty frequently and they're gonna hold up really well for you and being that disc brake design, they are gonna give you much better performance than you're used to with your drum brakes, so a great upgrade all around. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
