Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Over-the-Hub Rotor

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant nickel-chrome-plated piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with Dexter's 7-bolt brake flange configuration, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Note: These kits will not fit Dexter axles that came from the factory with Dexter disc brakes. They will only fit axles that come with drums or idler hubs.

Reputable company, competitive prices, fast delivery, excellent support service and awesome detailed videos with the products. I highly recommend

The most horrible delivery in the world only left 4 packages at the door and I left the others on the street, a brake kit is missing. I bought 8 brake kits and only received 7. The boxes are destroyed, the packaging was very poor, the only thing that was fine is the hydraulic pump

  • What Does Kodiak Disc Brake Kit Fit
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D11E will only fit a very specific idler hub from Dexter, the Dexter 008-430-03 and is designed for 16" dual wheels and has an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. Without seeing your specific application I can only guess but it sounds like this is not what you have on your trailer so you should definitely make sure you find out your precise axle and hub. While we do not have a video specific to this kit at the moment I did link a video which displays how a disc...

  • What Is the Warranty on the Brake Caliper for the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for Dexter 10,000 Lb Axles
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for Dexter 10,000 Lb Axles part # K2R1058D11E does have a three year warranty but with any product, the warranty really only covers manufacturing defects. If improper installation occurred such as not yielding the correct torque value, failing to retorque after X mileage, or failing to use a locking compound occurred then these conditions would not be covered under warranty. If you need a replacement caliper we do carry these, the Kodiak Disc Brake Caliper part...

There difference between the Kodiak # K2R1258L12 and # K2R1058D11E disc brake kits is the application and the capacity. Both kits provide E-coated calipers and caliper mounting brackets. The # K2R1058D11E is meant for a 10K dexter axle, the # K2R1258L12 is compatible with a 12K Dexter or Lippert standard (not HD) Axle.

  • Replacement Disc Brake Kit for a Dexter 12K Axle
The correct Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for a Dexter 12K Axle is part # K2R1258L12, not part # K2R1058D11E. I spoke with Dexter and they stated the latter would only work if you have a Dexter Hub 008-430-03. It looks like the brake mounting flange bolt pattern, rotor diameter, and calipers are the same between the above two kits but I again would not be able to confirm direct compatibility unless using the Dexter Hub 008-430-03.

  • Best Electric Actuator Kit Recommendation for Boat Trailer with Surge Brakes
You are on the right track, but as long as you are able to find the axle capacity you want in a grease hub setup there's no advantage to going with an oil-bath setup. The big factor for me is that if you blow a grease seal you'll be able to get home no problem and fix it without further damage. With an oil bath setup if you blow a grease seal you basically have to stop where you are at and fix the hub otherwise you'll start causing damage. Reason being that the oil is going to drain out...

Thanks for writing in and giving all that information, Michael, it was very helpful. And with that info, I was able to possibly find a solution for adding disc brakes that will work with your 7-bolt brake flange. The important thing here was the hub you mentioned, as there is a kit designed exactly for the Dexter Oil Hub for 9K to 10K General Duty Axles - After April 2013 # 008-430-03. I do need to note that the reason I say "possible" is that this will only work if you have the leaf spring...
