Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Over-the-Hub Rotor

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant nickel-chrome-plated piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with a 7-bolt brake flange configuration, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Note: These kits will not fit Dexter axles that came from the factory with Dexter disc brakes. They will only fit axles that come with drums or idler hubs.

These are the pics I took when I was done. Took two days to do but we'll worth it. I took pics after first load and now it feels good to actually stop with out wondering if the magnets were going to fail. I appreciate the fast shipping . The only thing I had to pick up was 25 feet of brake line,15 feet was not going to be anough . Other then this. I love it. Thank you very much and God bless

by:

These work great. Be cautious with 16" wheels though. The caliper will touch the rim but in my case it buffed in the clearance necessary. We used this on a tandem dual trailer and equipped it with the electric over hydraulic pump. Significantly better stopping power than running traditional magnet drums.

by:

Nice upgrade from electric drum brakes to disc brakes. Clearance on calipers to my 16” steel trailer rims was tight. May upgrade to 17.5” rims in the future.

by:

Great upgrade over the electric over electric drum brakes. Fit and finish was great. Definitely well wort the money for the disc brake upgrade.

by:

I have brakes, electric brakes should be outlawed.
Best thing I ever done was putting theses on my trailer.

by:

Before ordering I submitted a question and received a prompt reply. I followed up and ordered the Disc brake conversion kit and it only took 2 days!! You cant beat the price or door to door service.

by:

Dimensions on caliper are not right , need to do some gridding . It was touching the inside of the rims. Have to move flange back doo to difference in thickness of drum to disc . Have not taken to the hills , but I'm shore it will stop.

  • Parts Needed to Convert Tandem Dually Boat Trailer to Disc Brakes
Our hub-and-rotor disc brakes kits are offered in various axle capacities including 7000-, 8000- and 10,000-lbs. Since we do not have a 9K kit, which you noted, you can use a 10K kit. Kodiak offers part # K2R1058D11 that works with Dexter hubs that have number 008-288 cast into the hub. This kit fits with 8 on 6-1/2 dually 16-1/2-inch wheels (or 17-1/2 single wheels). You will need two kits for your tandem axle trailer. I checked with my technical contact at Kodiak to confirm this is an...

  • Does Installing Brakes On Trailer without Them Affect Wheel and Tire Position
We generally recommend you stick with the trailer or vehicle manufacturers when it comes to questions like this, but adding trailer brakes does not change the position of the wheel relative to the axle. Hub/drums have the hub face dimension the exact same as the standard hubs. Maybe there's a difference clearance issue between maybe the frame and other components related to the brakes but the wheel/tire location would not change. I attached a help article on adding brakes to a trailer...

  • Does a Trailer have to have Dually Wheels and Idler Hubs for Kodiak Disc Brake Kit K2R1058D11 to Fit
Kodiak disc brake kit # K2R1058D11 is designed for 10,000-lb Dexter axles with leaf springs. It will fit either 16-1/2 inch dually wheels or 17-1/2 inch single wheels. So the trailer does not necessarily have to have dually wheels for this kit to fit. The kit fits over idler hubs. Since it fits idler hubs, which are just regular hubs as opposed to a hub with integrated drum, you would need to replace the drum brake hubs with properly sized idler hubs to install this kit. To find the correct...

  • Can Electric Over Hydraulic and Surge Brake Actuators Be Installed At the Same Time
You ask a very interesting question! You are correct that it is technically possible to have both a surge coupler and an EOH actuator connected simultaneously to the same hydraulic braking setup. You are also 100% correct that any manufacturer's risk management team would probably say no. As I see it, the main concern is the lockout on the surge coupler. If you had an electric lockout on the coupler and if for any reason that solenoid or its power connection failed you would have both...

The Kodiak 10K Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D11 is intended to allow conversion of a Dexter 8-288 idler hub for use with disc brakes. It is compatible ONLY with one specific hub, the Dexter hub 8-288 built between February 1990 and August 2009. If your trailer already has disk brakes then you will be better served by installing appropriate replacement parts for your set up. If you want to let me know the bearing set used in your hubs I can help you locate suitable components.

There difference between the Kodiak # K2R1258L12 and # K2R1058D11E disc brake kits is the application and the capacity. Both kits provide E-coated calipers and caliper mounting brackets.
