Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Video Transcript for Kodiak Trailer Brakes - Disc Brakes - K2HR526D Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit with the 12" hubs and rotors with the 6 on 5 1/2" bolt pattern. This is for a 5,200 pound to 6,000 pound axle, and all the parts have a Dacromet finish to it. Now these brake assemblies will make it very easy to upgrade from your drum brakes to your disc brakes for better performance. Disc brakes give you more consistent stopping, even at highway speeds, and gives you dramatically shorter stopping distance. Maintenance costs are a lot lower than for drum brakes because you've got a lot fewer moving parts to maintain, repair, and replace. The finish on all these parts is a Dacromet coating that provides superior corrosion resistance for fresh water or saltwater use.

It goes through a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating. Now the hub and rotor assembly right here is an integral one-piece unit. It minimizes lateral run out to prevent warping, provides a nice smooth ride with a balanced hub and rotor. It does use industry standard bearings and seals. We do sell those separately on our website. Now the bearing races on the outer and the inner are all included.

They're already pressed in the hub. It also helps prevents heat-related damage because they use a vented design. Let me try to turn this, and you'll see right here, there's the venting. This will effectively dissipate heat. Now it does include the wheel studs already installed.

The lug nuts that are required are sold separately. The calipers now, they're a cast iron caliper. They're self-adjusting for smooth, equal braking. The cast iron construction does not flex like aluminum. It is a low drag design. It retracts the piston further than other calipers for a cooler running brake.

The piston in this, right here behind the brake pad, it's a stainless steel piston. It's 2 1/4" in diameter, so that size is 30% larger than most other brands, so it will give you more braking torque than the competition. The pads that are already installed in there, they are high-performance ceramic brake pads. Now, the mounting brackets . That's these parts right here . they're made of a ductile iron. They provide strength and durability. They do have nice, side support design to ensure that the load is placed on the bracket, not just on the bolts. They do have extra embossing for additional thread contact to ensure a tight, secure mounting for the caliper guide bolts that go right here. If you notice, it is a 5 bolt brake flange mounting configuration. This kit includes two full brake assemblies, so two Dacromet plated iron rotor and hub assemblies, two Dacromet plated cast iron calipers, two Dacromet plated ductile iron mounting brackets, and the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts. You can see a nice booklet, which is an installation and operating manual. The hydraulic brake actuator and lines, they are required for these brakes to be activated. Those we also sell separately on our website. It will require a pressure rating of those lines of at least 1,500 psi. The last thing is a few specs on this. Again, it for axle capacities from 5,200 pound up to 6,000 pound axles that have the number 42 spindle. The wheel size on it would be 15" and larger. Again, the bolt pattern on this hub is 6 on 5 1/2". The diameter of this rotor is 12". We had mentioned on the mounting brackets, they use a five bolt brake flange configuration, and the lug nuts that you need on this are 1/2" size, 1/2" by 20 size lug nuts. These parts are all made in the U.S.A. That should do it for the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, the 12" hub and rotor with the 6 on 5 1/2" bolt pattern for 5,200 pound to 6,000 pound axles in the Dacromet finish.

Removed the drums on a 2015 Fifth Wheel that was used twice. It appears that the right side drums has a different installer as the grease seal was blown through with grease on the magnets, brake shoes, and inside the hub. Removed all factory material and installed the e-trailer rotors with disc brakes and the installation was seamless. Looks better and provides excellent stopping power. Remember just because it is new does not mean someone at the factory did not make a mistake. I had absolutely no brakes on this RV that weighed 12,100lbs loaded. Thank you Ricky S. for the help and E-Trailer 275534

Shortly after I had installed the brakes I became ill and sold theRV. I do want to let you know that the times I did use the RV the braking system performed very well. As a former State Trooper and accident reconstructionist, RVs that are the size that I had should all have these brakes. I am considering a smaller RV and will probably change the items that I had to change on the larger type. There is no price when it comes to safety.

We do a lot of traveling in our 5th wheel rv all over the U.S. I bought this product because I don't particularly like the way the original electric brakes work. I installed them myself and the hardest part was routing the hydraulic lines, but it still didn't take much over one day. This past year we put about 10,000 miles on the rv and if it wasn't for the excellent stopping power of these brakes we probably would have had 2 accidents. One when the car in front of me missed his exit near Kansas city and decided to slam on his brakes and come to a stop in the middle of the freeway, and another time when out of nowhere a deer ran out in front of me on the interstate in New York. I love the brakes and will never be without disc brakes again!!! 324287

The Kodiac Disk brakes teamed with the Hydrastar Actuator should be a must for those towing with a concern for safety. The stopping distance is amazing compared to the standard electric surge braking systems. The initial cost outlay will pay for itself if it prevents an accident where deductibles are involved and the downtime. The complete installation of the system was actually quite easy if you are mechanically inclined and set aside the time to do it properly. 429664

After years of frustration with the standard drum brakes on my boat trailer I called William at etrailer. I ordered a disk brake conversion kit and new wheel bearings, The parts showed up 2 days earlier than I was expecting them allowing me to install them for the weekend. They look like quality items and I will gladly do business with Etrailer in the future. I'm satisfied with my purchase and I'm confident that I have a quality product. 541082

I used two of these to convert a two axle trailer from surge drum brakes to electric over hydraulic disc brakes. The improvement in braking can't be overstated! The difference is amazing. The installation was very straightforward with the instructions provided. If you have any mechanical aptitude you can handle this conversion. 529580

Still working as they should with no issues whatsoever. Extremely pleased!

  • Yes, it should be possible to upgrade your 1989 Calkins boat trailer with 6 bolt 15 inch wheel over to disc brakes from drum brakes. The first thing you will need to do is determine the bolt pattern of the wheel, see video on how to correctly measure, and then you need to determine the inner and outer bearing part numbers, and the seal part number to select the right disc brake hub and rotor combination. Once you have the bearings for your spindle and the wheel bolt pattern figured out,...

  • Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for Lippert 6,000 lb Axles
  • I checked with Lippert and their 6k axle uses the bearing numbers 15123 and 25580. Because we know that we know that the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR526D will fit your axle since it uses the same bearing numbers. I also attached a couple help articles on adding disc brakes to a trailer for you to check out as well.

  • Building a Trailer with Brakes Using EZ Lube Trailer Spindle # R50342EZ
  • The measurement from the inner bearing shoulder to the brake mounting flange is 2-7/8 inches (see photo). This spindle requires a hub that uses inner bearing 25580 and outer bearing 14125A, LM67048 or 15123. It also requires a grease seal with an inner diameter of 2.25 inches. If you are using drum brakes, then you could use the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # 42866UC3-EZ, if your wheels have the 8 on 6-1/2 wheel bolt pattern or you can use part # 8-201-5UC3-EZ for a hub and...

  • Recommendation For Converting to Disc Brakes on AL-KO T-44 Axle
  • The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR526D referenced in your question is designed for 5,200 to 6,000 pound axles. As you mentioned, this kit is compatible with the #42 spindle and uses the # 25580 inner bearing and # 15123 outer bearing. When choosing a hub and rotor kit that will fit your trailer's spindle, going by the bearing numbers in your existing hubs is the most accurate method. Based on my research, the AL-KO T-44 axle spindle on your trailer uses the # L68149 inner bearing and...

  • How Should a Trailer Brake Mounting Flange be Welded to a Trailer
  • To weld on a brake mounting flange such as # 4-44-1 it requires a special jig and someone with experience in welding on brake mounting flanges. They have to be perfectly square and concentric and if off just a little bit it can lead to all kinds of problems with trailer ride, stability, tire, and suspension wear. You would need to find someone locally who has the proper equipment and has done this type of installation before. A place that sells trailers and RVs and has a service center...

  • How to Pick out New Disk Brakes for a 2004 Shorelander Trailer
  • You gave me almost all the information I would need to recommend you a replacement disc brake kit. You gave me the bolt pattern, 6 on 5-1/2 inches, and the diameter of the rotors, 12 inches. And that your brake mounting flange is a 4 bolt flange. The last thing needed is the bearing number from your current hubs. We need to find the hubs that will fit your spindles and the easiest way to do that is to get your bearing numbers. The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR526D that you referenced...
