Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.

Kodiak calipers are constructed of stainless steel to prevent flexing and rust. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant dacromet that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Video Transcript for Kodiak Trailer Brakes - Disc Brakes - K2HR35DS Review

Today we're going to review part number K2HR35DS. This is the Kodiak disc brake kit for thirty-five hundred pound axles with the five one four and a half inch bolt pattern in the Dacromet and the stainless steel finish. Now these brake assemblies will make it easy to upgrade from drum brakes to disc brakes. It gives you better performance. The disc brakes will give you more consistent stopping even at highway speeds and it gives you dramatically shorter stopping distances. Now the disc brakes maintenance costs are lower than a lot 00:00:31 for drum brakes because there are fewer moving parts to maintain, repair and replace. The Dacromet-plating right here provides a superior corrosion resistance for freshwater or saltwater use.

It does have a four hundred to six hundred hour salt spray rating on them. Now the hub and rotor, it's an Integral hub and rotor which is all one piece. This will allow it to minimize lateral run out, prevents any warping, provides a smooth ride because the hub and the rotor are all balanced together. It does use industry standard bearings and seals which we do sell separately. The races, the bearing races however are pre-installed. There's the outer race right there.

If I spin around, you'll be able to see the inner race right there. If you'll notice, the rotor is vented design. This will help to prevent any heat related damage. This vented design will effectively dissipate that heat. It does include these half inch wheel studs and the lug nuts are sold separately. Now the calipers themselves they are actually stainless steel, calipers right here.

These are self-adjusting for smooth equal braking. The stainless steel construction on the caliper does not flex like you'll get with aluminum design. It is a low drag design which will retract the piston farther back than other calipers. It gives a cooler running brake and also the piston right there on the inside is a stainless steel piston which is about two and a quarter inches in diameter and that diameter is about thirty percent larger than a lot of other brands and since it's larger it will give you more braking torque than the competition. If you notice, the pads on them are a high performance ceramic brake pad. Now the mounting brackets, these are a iron mounting bracket.

Again they have the Dacromet finish on them, provides strength and durability. If you'll notice on the brackets, it has the very heavy side support design. This will ensure that the load is placed on the bracket not just on the bolts. It has extra embossing here up at the top. This will give you additional thread contact to ensure a tight secure mounting for the caliper when it gets mounted onto the bracket. If you notice it is a four bolt brake flange mounting configuration. Now we do also sell this flange in a weld on flange if you want to weld it on, it's sold separately. This is the bolt on version that comes in this kit. Now this kit does include two full brake assemblies. It has the two Dacromet-plated cast iron rotor and hub assemblies. The two stainless steel cast iron calipers, the two Dacromet-plated iron caliper mounting iron caliper mounting brackets and then the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, that's all included in this kit. Now to activate these brakes, it is required to have a hydraulic brake actuator in the brake lines. Those are not included. They are sold separately if needed. You do have to remember when you do use the brake lines it does require a fifteen hundred PSI rating for the disc brakes. Now again the bearings, the grease seal, the grease cap and lug nuts are not included. Those we do also sell separately. A few specs on this. This kit is designed for axles with a number eighty-four spindle and a thirty-five hundred pound weight capacity. This does use a wheel size of thirteen inches and larger. Again the bolt pattern is five on four and a half inches. The rotor diameter is ten inches. Wheel stud diameter is a half an inch. Again the brackets use the four bolt brake flange configuration, but that should do it for the review on part number K2HR35DS. This is the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for thirty-five hundred axles for five on four and a half inch bolt pattern in the Dacromet and the stainless steel finish. .

I can't say enough good things about the staff at etrailer. They helped me pick out the correct items to install disc brakes on my boat trailer and the technical staff was extremely helpful in helping me better understand how to perform the installation. This was the first time I ever install a new brake system and their help enabled me to easily and successfully complete the installation. A+ for the product quality and for etrailer staff! 401882

This product worked great. I'm so glad there is a kit that has all this together. The hoses are much higher quality than what I took off the trailer. I wish there had been an option to pay a little more to get stainless clamps as I launch in salt water 90% of the time. I will buy this kit again when the time comes. 775529

This disc brake system from Kodiak sure makes conversion from drums trouble free. Also a great way to add brakes to an axle without brakes. 401153

Very pleased with the service and quality of product. Placed order on Monday and received on Friday enabling me to complete the installation over the weekend. All components were shipped and installation was very smooth. Time will tell how the Dacromet resists corrosion. I also ordered the rubber break line kit, replacing everything from the master cylinder back (tandem axles). Would have preferred to keep the oil bath hubs vs going back to grease and bearing buddies. This is my 4th trailer and the oil bath hubs were superior. No leaks/seal failure in 5 years of use. 385176

The stainless steel calipers look great. nice finish. Rotors are well made. One suggestion to the manufacture, chamfer the seal pocket, it would make installing the seal much easier. 279288

Recently I decided to put new hub/rotors and SS caliper on my trailer that has double torsion axels. I knew that the old ones were Kodiak 10" hubs and calipers. Found etrailer online and compared prices and shipping charges. Found them to the best. Online system was easy to use and placed the order. A few days later I received the parts. I had ordered a hub/rotor combination but one set was accidently shipped as a rotor only. It was an honest mistake since the park numbers were almost identical. Called them up and sent some photos and a few days later I had the new kit and I sent the other ones back with the USP shipping label that they sent me. Nice people and easy to work with. I will order my next trailer parts from them as well! 233636

These are a great upgrade from the rusty, frozen tie down brakes my trailer came with. The instructions are good and the product was fairly easy to install. It took several hours, but definitely worth the effort. Etrailer was quick to ship and very helpful and easy to contact. I would definitely buy here again. Thank you! 202688

I've never changed brakes before and this was way easier than I thought it would be (the hardest part was getting the old rusted calipers off the trailer). I did end up needing to order new grease seals. I can't imagine why I would reuse old grease seals on new hubs, so I'd recommend that you order these with the package (and recommend that eTailer include them, or at least suggest that you should order them). 183526

I am having issue's with this product. When I mounting the first one I could not get the caliper mounted and later found out the mounting plate had a bolt hole that was not threaded from the factory. I talked to Caleb and in less than 2 days I had a replacement in my hand. Caleb spent a great deal of time making sure I got it and fast. Caleb helped me a lot with my install. The other issue I am currently dealing with is the outside brake pad is rubbing the face of the rotor on both of the left side axles. I am going to call Kodiak today for suggestions. I will be buying all my stuff from Etrailer because IF you do have a issue one phone call to them and they will take care of it. THANK YOU Caleb 170269

Received my purchase within 3days. Everything was perfect and was easy to install 150967

- K2HR35DS

The Kodiak brake kit was delivered intact. When installing it , i found that you can not install this brake set on a Road King aluminum I bean trailer. the calipers will hit the frame rails. no matter where i put the caliper, unless all the way on the bottom, which isnt good . So i will have to eat this purchase. Installed the tiedown stuff that wont last 2 years in salt water. I wish there was some information about the Kodiak system needing more clearence between the caliper and the frame.I rated it a good for its not the problem of the brake manufacturer, but the trailer manufacturer for spacing the wheels so close to the frame. 130171

I just spoke to my contact at Kodiak about the clearance issue you have and he informed me that as long as your bleed the brakes with the bleeder valve pointed up you could then install the calipers in the 6:00 position and they would work just fine.
-- comment by: Jameson C - 05/23/2014

I did sellinstall this brake set on a loadrite trailer and there was plenty of clearence, As stasted before , the road king trailer that i was trying to install this set of brakes on didnt have the clearence needed. The caliper would contact the frame as the suspetion would travel. As with all factory rep replies it allways seems to be the installers fault that it will not work. I bet that rep dosent have 40 years of repair service under his belt. After that coment on the 6 oclock position, yeah it would work but who wants the have the caliper on the bottom? Typical for a factory rep. Add and inch to the axel on each side and things would clear just fine.

  • Will Kodiac 3,500lb Disc Brakes Fit To UFP 4200 Axle
These axles only use one common bearing combination for the inner and outer bearings. For the inner bearing, a 4,400 pound axle normally uses # L68149 and for the outer bearing it's usually # LM67048 vs. the outer bearing of # L44649 for a 3,500lb axle. Definitely check your bearings size and measure the spindles where the bearings sit. To make sure that the hub-and-rotor assembly you're looking at will work with your trailer spindle, you will have to either measure your spindle or...

  • Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for 1998 Mastercraft Single Axle Trailer Model SS 19
Your bearing numbers mean you have a standard 3,500 lb trailer axle so for a disc brake kit you'd want the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DS for just the hub/rotors, mounting brackets, and calipers. Or if you wanted a kit that included a surge actuator and brake lines plus what was mentioned earlier you'd want the part # T4843300.

For a trailer that will be used in saltwater, the best option for rotors, hubs, and calipers is those made of stainless steel. Does your trailer have 3,500 lb axles on it? If so, then yes the # K2HR35DS would fit and work well. One quick way to determine this is to measure the diameter of the axles. If that dimension is 2-3/8 inches then you do have a 3,500 lb axle and the # K2HR35DS is a confirmed fit. If you have a different dimension axle email me back and I'll see what we have that would fit.

  • Fitment of the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DS on a Road King I Beam Aluminum Trailer
I spoke to my contact at Kodiak and he informed me that you would be able to fit the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DS on your Roadking Aluminum I beam trailer. He said that your boat trailer has the frame extended out pretty wide and that can interfere with caliper installation, but as long as you bleed the brakes with the bleeder valve pointing up you could then install the caliper wherever needed to clear the frame, including in the 6:00 position.

  • Boat Trailer with Disc Brakes on Front Axle Slamming Back and Forth when Stopping
It sounds like your boat trailer simply does not have quite enough stopping power when you are applying the brakes from your tow vehicle. This will certainly result in the back and forth slamming/jerking you are experiencing. I do recommend adding disc brakes to the rear axle of your trailer. Doing this should greatly reduce these symptoms. In order to choose the right disc brake assembly for your trailer, you will need to know the axle capacity, wheel bolt pattern and the part numbers...

  • Recommended Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for 3,500 Pound Tandem Axle Trailer
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DS is for one axle. So you need to purchase two of them for your trailer. Kodiak does not offer a tandem axle DAC/SS kit at this time. If you need an actuator as well, you can use the HydraStar Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # HS381-9065 if you have electric over hydraulic brakes. If you have surge brakes you can use # T2480000. These will work with Kodiak brakes and keep you from having to piece everything together. For a Kodiak tandem...

  • How to Pick Out Disc Brakes for a Trailer that has Drum Brakes
I can pick you out the correct disc brake setup if you can get back to me with the bearing numbers that you replaced recently. We have to first determine what spindle you have so that we can pick out the correct hub/rotors that will fit. You are absolutely correct about disc brakes, they are much easier to wash salt water off of and have much more stopping power. I attached a help article that details how to pick out everything needed to add disc brakes to at trailer. If you are looking...

  • Compatibility of the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit on a 2006 Tidewater Single Axle Boat Trailer
Before you can decide on installing the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, # K2HR35DS, you will need to find the spindle size on your trailer's axle. Knowing the size of the spindle surfaces or the bearing numbers that are currently installed will make sure you receive the correct bearing sizes for the disc brake hubs. The attached picture shows were the bearing numbers are located and what measurements are needed to find the correct fit. Also, knowing what bolt pattern you have for your current...

  • Recommendation on a Disc Brake Kit That Will Work on 13 inch Wheels
If you have 13 inch wheels on your trailer, then the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K1HR35S unfortunately, can not be used with 13 inch wheels. However, The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, # K2HR35DS, will work on a trailer that has 13 inch wheels. You will need to make sure that your wheels has the 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern. If they do not then your wheel will not fit on the brake rotors. I also linked a help article that will explain all the other parts needed to install hydraulic disc brakes.

  • Parts Needed to Add Disc Brakes to Drum Brake Trailer
If you have Atwood surge coupler # 83010 and you want to convert the trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes on one axle you will need to either replace the coupler or replace the master cylinder inside it with one that delivers the higher psi pressure required by disc brakes. Disc brakes need psi pressure in the 1500-1600-psi range so a new 8K-rated actuator/coupler like # T4747220 is needed. If the trailer has two 3500-lb axles (which would be expected if it has the 8K-rated Atwood...

  • Recommended Disc Brake System for Salt Water Boat Trailer with Tandem Axles
To get the best braking power for your boat trailer you would want to have disc brakes on both axles. If you happen to be limited to one axle then you would want the rear outfitted. With a 5,000lb boat you likely have two 3,500lb torsion axles. The best finish for a salt water application is going to be stainless steel, next would be the KodaGuard and then Dacromet. For a 3,500lb 10 inch hub and rotor in stainless you will want a quantity of 2 # K1HR35S. Stainless is the best for...

  • Recommend Kodiak Disc Brake Kit To Fit Trailer With 13 Inch Wheels
The reason why the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 10 Inch Rotor, part # K2R35S, will not fit 13 inch wheels is because part # K2R35S uses a slip on rotor, so the assembly is slightly bigger making the caliper sit out further. You would need a hub and rotor assembly disc brake kit. The caliper and rotors you would need for your trailer with 13 inch wheels is the Kodiak Disc Brake Assembly, part # K2HR35DS. You would need to order a quantity of 2 of part # K2HR35DS, as it is sold for one side....

  • Differences between Kodiak Disc Brake Kit K2HR35DS and K2HR35DKG
Let's start with the similarities. Both kits are compatible with L44649 and L68149 bearings and a 10-19 grease seal. Both kits are intended for use with a 3500 lb axle. Both are intended for marine applications and use dacromet rotor/hub assemblies. The difference is that the # K2HR35DS offers stainless brake calipers for the best available corrosion resistance. The # K2HR35DKG offer calipers witha KodaGuard plated calipers. KodaGuard isn't as corrosion resistant as stainless steel, but...
