Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.


Kodiak calipers are constructed of stainless steel to prevent flexing and rust. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant dacromet that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Today we're going to review part number K2HR35DS. This is the Kodiak disc brake kit for thirty-five hundred pound axles with the five one four and a half inch bolt pattern in the Dacromet and the stainless steel finish. Now these brake assemblies will make it easy to upgrade from drum brakes to disc brakes. It gives you better performance. The disc brakes will give you more consistent stopping even at highway speeds and it gives you dramatically shorter stopping distances. Now the disc brakes maintenance costs are lower than a lot 00:00:31 for drum brakes because there are fewer moving parts to maintain, repair and replace. The Dacromet-plating right here provides a superior corrosion resistance for freshwater or saltwater use.

It does have a four hundred to six hundred hour salt spray rating on them. Now the hub and rotor, it's an Integral hub and rotor which is all one piece. This will allow it to minimize lateral run out, prevents any warping, provides a smooth ride because the hub and the rotor are all balanced together. It does use industry standard bearings and seals which we do sell separately. The races, the bearing races however are pre-installed. There's the outer race right there.

If I spin around, you'll be able to see the inner race right there. If you'll notice, the rotor is vented design. This will help to prevent any heat related damage. This vented design will effectively dissipate that heat. It does include these half inch wheel studs and the lug nuts are sold separately. Now the calipers themselves they are actually stainless steel, calipers right here.

These are self-adjusting for smooth equal braking. The stainless steel construction on the caliper does not flex like you'll get with aluminum design. It is a low drag design which will retract the piston farther back than other calipers. It gives a cooler running brake and also the piston right there on the inside is a stainless steel piston which is about two and a quarter inches in diameter and that diameter is about thirty percent larger than a lot of other brands and since it's larger it will give you more braking torque than the competition. If you notice, the pads on them are a high performance ceramic brake pad. Now the mounting brackets, these are a iron mounting bracket.

Again they have the Dacromet finish on them, provides strength and durability. If you'll notice on the brackets, it has the very heavy side support design. This will ensure that the load is placed on the bracket not just on the bolts. It has extra embossing here up at the top. This will give you additional thread contact to ensure a tight secure mounting for the caliper when it gets mounted onto the bracket. If you notice it is a four bolt brake flange mounting configuration. Now we do also sell this flange in a weld on flange if you want to weld it on, it's sold separately. This is the bolt on version that comes in this kit. Now this kit does include two full brake assemblies. It has the two Dacromet-plated cast iron rotor and hub assemblies. The two stainless steel cast iron calipers, the two Dacromet-plated iron caliper mounting iron caliper mounting brackets and then the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, that's all included in this kit. Now to activate these brakes, it is required to have a hydraulic brake actuator in the brake lines. Those are not included. They are sold separately if needed. You do have to remember when you do use the brake lines it does require a fifteen hundred PSI rating for the disc brakes. Now again the bearings, the grease seal, the grease cap and lug nuts are not included. Those we do also sell separately. A few specs on this. This kit is designed for axles with a number eighty-four spindle and a thirty-five hundred pound weight capacity. This does use a wheel size of thirteen inches and larger. Again the bolt pattern is five on four and a half inches. The rotor diameter is ten inches. Wheel stud diameter is a half an inch. Again the brackets use the four bolt brake flange configuration, but that should do it for the review on part number K2HR35DS. This is the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for thirty-five hundred axles for five on four and a half inch bolt pattern in the Dacromet and the stainless steel finish. .

The Kodiak brake kit was delivered intact. When installing it , i found that you can not install this brake set on a Road King aluminum I bean trailer. the calipers will hit the frame rails. no matter where i put the caliper, unless all the way on the bottom, which isnt good . So i will have to eat this purchase. Installed the tiedown stuff that wont last 2 years in salt water. I wish there was some information about the Kodiak system needing more clearence between the caliper and the frame.I rated it a good for its not the problem of the brake manufacturer, but the trailer manufacturer for spacing the wheels so close to the frame. 130171


I just spoke to my contact at Kodiak about the clearance issue you have and he informed me that as long as your bleed the brakes with the bleeder valve pointed up you could then install the calipers in the 6:00 position and they would work just fine.

I did sellinstall this brake set on a loadrite trailer and there was plenty of clearence, As stasted before , the road king trailer that i was trying to install this set of brakes on didnt have the clearence needed. The caliper would contact the frame as the suspetion would travel. As with all factory rep replies it allways seems to be the installers fault that it will not work. I bet that rep dosent have 40 years of repair service under his belt. After that coment on the 6 oclock position, yeah it would work but who wants the have the caliper on the bottom? Typical for a factory rep. Add and inch to the axel on each side and things would clear just fine.

I've never changed brakes before and this was way easier than I thought it would be (the hardest part was getting the old rusted calipers off the trailer). I did end up needing to order new grease seals. I can't imagine why I would reuse old grease seals on new hubs, so I'd recommend that you order these with the package (and recommend that eTailer include them, or at least suggest that you should order them). 183526

I am having issue's with this product. When I mounting the first one I could not get the caliper mounted and later found out the mounting plate had a bolt hole that was not threaded from the factory. I talked to Caleb and in less than 2 days I had a replacement in my hand. Caleb spent a great deal of time making sure I got it and fast. Caleb helped me a lot with my install. The other issue I am currently dealing with is the outside brake pad is rubbing the face of the rotor on both of the left side axles. I am going to call Kodiak today for suggestions.   • You have some common bearings there. For a combination stainless steel and dacromet which is going to offer the most corrosion resistance you can use # K2HR35DS which has the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, 1/2 inch studs, and fits 13 inch and larger wheels. For a kit that is all the same except that it is all dacromet use # K2HR35D. For salt water environments the best option is going to be stainless steel.
