Kodiak Disc Brake Hub-and-Rotor

Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This disc brake assembly resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat trailer. All KodaGuard calipers undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 1,992 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 1,992-hour salt spray rating indicates that this product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

In addition, the hub-and-rotor assemblies and caliper mounting brackets have a Dacromet plating, which offers a 300- to 400-hour salt spray rating. The pistons, the brake pad backings, and the caliper mounting bolts are made of rustproof stainless steel. These corrosion-resistant components make this Kodiak assembly a natural choice when installing disc brakes on your boat trailer.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies for Easy Installation

Retrofitting disc brakes or replacing drum brakes on your trailer is easy with this hub-and-rotor assembly. The hub and rotor are cast and machined as a single unit, with wheel studs pressed into the rotor. This 1-piece style of hub and rotor minimizes contamination - sometimes called runout - between rotor and hub surfaces to prevent warping. The result is excellent performance and long life. And because the hub and rotor are balanced together, you get a smoother ride.

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

This is a mixed review, I'd like to give a 1 star rating for ETRAILERs method of packing hubs and caliper mounting plates. The plates were loose in the box and apparently got sat on by the heavy hubs and subsequently bent the caliper mounting plate just enough to cause one side to drag on the rotor. I spent the entire day testing and troubleshooting a dragging brake only to find out that poor packing methods caused my problems. I would give the Kodiak disc brake kit a 5 out of 5 for a nice beefy braking system that under normal circumstances would be installed in short order.

Excellent support from Nicole in helping me confirm availability of all my material needs for my boat trailer brake upgrade from Drum to Disk. Have not actually done the install but parts arrived a day early and look to be high quality. The only slight bummer is that this set did not come with the caliper bracket mounting hardware. Not a big deal and will gather these locally. Thanks Nicole!!

Ask the Experts about this Kodiak Trailer Brakes

  • Will Replacing Hub/Rotor with Hub Over Rotor Push Out the Wheels On One Axle
In order to install the Kodiak 10" Rotor part # KR10S on a 3,500 lb axle you'll need the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K. This would then work just fine with the Kodiak 225 Calipers. That said, if you were only running idler hubs without brakes on the other axle there could indeed be an offset. I don't think this would cause an issue or really even be noticeable but you could use spacers as you mentioned but we do not offer these.

  • Replacement Disc Brake Kit For Homemade Boat Trailer and TDE 46245 Rotors
Your TDE 46245 looks to use the Bearings # L68149 and # L44649 which are the common bearings used on most 3,500lb axles. You can check and see if your rotors do have these same bearings used on your axle in case they were changed at some point. These are the same bearings that are used on the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DKG. As this is being used for a boat trailer the best option is the Stainless Steel Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R35S. • Is the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DKG a Grease or Oil-Bath Setup
Oil bath hubs will have a threaded opening for where the cap installs, whereas grease hubs use press in caps and also different seals. Because of that the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DKG would only be able to be used in a grease setup. Grease is often preferred over oil bath as they must also be closely watched in situations where the trailer is submerged in water, because the oil will breakdown much faster than grease will when water is introduced. Standard grease filled axles are...

Let's start with the similarities. Both kits are compatible with L44649 and L68149 bearings and a 10-19 grease seal. Both kits are intended for use with a 3500 lb axle. Both are intended for marine applications and use dacromet rotor/hub assemblies. The difference is that the # K2HR35DS offers stainless brake calipers for the best available corrosion resistance. The # K2HR35DKG offer calipers witha KodaGuard plated calipers. KodaGuard isn't as corrosion resistant as stainless steel, but...
