Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts that will require repair or replacement, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Rotors and Hub Spacers

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotors work in conjunction with the included hub spacers to easily convert your idler axle to a disc brake axle. The hub spacers are designed to replace your standard idler hubs, and they come furnished with races and wheel bolts (bearings and seals are sold separately). Once the spacers are in place, the rotors can be slipped on. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace just one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Video Transcript for Kodiak Trailer Brakes - Disc Brakes - K2HR35D-8 Review

Speaker 1: We're going to take a look at the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, with the 8" Dacromet-plated hub and rotors, and calipers, with the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern for 3,500 pound axles. Now, these brake assemblies will make it very easy to change from an idler axle to a disc brake axle. The kit will include two full brake assemblies, everything we have laid out here on the table. That will be the two Dacromet-plated cast iron rotors with the two Dacromet-plated cast iron hub spacers installed, the two Dacromet-plated cast iron calipers, the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts, and then the two Dacromet-plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. Now, disc brakes will deliver better performance than drum brakes. Gives you more consistent stopping, even at highway speeds, and dramatically shorter stopping distances. Also, the maintenance costs are lower than for drum brakes, because you'll have fewer moving parts to maintain, repair, or replace.

These rotors are a slip-on cast iron over the hub rotor, which will mount with these included hub spacers together. These hub spacers are what'll replace your standard idler hub. Now, these will use industry standard bearings and seals that we do sell separately on our website. The races are already installed, they're pre-installed into the hub.If you notice, the rotors themselves are vented to help prevent heat-related damage, by effectively dissipating the heat. The Dacromet plating on all these parts provides corrosion resistance for freshwater and limited saltwater use.

They do have a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating. The cast iron calipers on here, they are self-adjusting for a nice smooth equal braking. The cast iron construction does not flex like aluminum. The caliper's a low drag design, which means it retracts the piston further than other calipers for a nice cooler running brake.Let me remove one of these brake pads, just to show you here's the stainless steel piston, which is 2-1/4" in diameter. That's about 30% larger than other brands, so it will give you more braking torque than the competition.

These calipers do include the high performance ceramic brake pads with them. Now, the ductile iron caliper mounting brackets right here, they do provide strength and durability. They are a side support design to endure that the load is placed on the bracket, not just the bolts. Does have extra embossing for additional thread contact to ensure a nice, tight, secure mounting for your caliper guide bolts. If you notice, it is a four bolt brake flange mounting configuration.

Now, also with this you will need a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines. We do sell those separately on our website. They are required for the brakes to be activated. When you do get those parts, you do want to make sure that they do have a PSI rating of at least 1500 PSI.These parts are made in the USA. Few specs on this again, the axle capacity, it's for 3,500 pound axles. It will take the wheel size from 10" up to 13". The bolt pattern on this hub is 5 on 4-1/2". Overall diameter on the rotor is 8", and the wheel stud diameter on the hub is 1/2". But that should do it for the review on the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, with the 8" Dacromet plate hub and rotors and calipers, with the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern for 3,500 pound axles.

Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 8" Rotor/Hub - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet - 3,500 lbs - K2HR35D-8

Average Customer Rating:  4.0 out of 5 stars   (4 Customer Reviews)

Trailer disc brake kit includes 2 assemblies with Dacromet-plated rotors, hub spacers, calipers and mounting brackets. Assemblies fit 3,500-lb axles with 10" to 13" wheels. The 8" rotors feature a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.

Machining on two of the rotor assemblies were poor with missing or improper countersink holes for rotor mount bolts. Had to countersink like the other two because rotor mount bolts interfered with bracket bolts. One of these rotors also rubbed on the bracket and needed to be machined to prevent the rubbing. Unacceptable quality control on these parts. 775735

- K2HR35D-8

one of the brackets was 1/16 too small to fit on the lip. I should have noticed it at installation but didn't. Other than that system works great 703894

- K2HR35D-8

Replaced drum brakes with these disc brakes. Very easy installation, however, had to get someone that knows what they are doing to bleed and pressurize the brake lines. Attaching the reverse lockout wire to the reverse lights very simple also. Disc brakes has much less movable parts that can "break". 703381

Fast shipping and very easy to install. This is my first time ever installing brakes on a trailer, and instructions were very easy to follow. The entire project was done in about 4 hours, including 2 trips to the store for supplies I should have had ahead of time (marine grease, brake fluid and bolts). 490765

Ask the Experts about this Kodiak Trailer Brakes

  • How to Know What Weight Rating is Needed When Converting from Drum to Disc Brakes
Good questions and there is a lot here so let's start with the simplest thing, the weight rating. Trailer brakes are rated based on their axle; for example, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D-8 is designed for a 3,500 lb axle and a tandem axle trailer with a pair of 3,500 lb axles would need two of these, so the first thing to know is the weight rating of your axles. Then to get the correct fit, since you are replacing a hub and drum, you are going to need a disc brake kit with a hub...

  • 3,500 lb Trailer Brake Setup that Fits Behind 10 inch Trailer Wheel
Since 3,500 brake drums are too large to fit behind a 10 inch trailer wheel the only option you'd have would be a disc brake kit like the Kodiak part # K2HR35D-8 which has a 3,500 lb capacity, 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and would work well. I attached a couple help articles on instaling disc brakes on a trailer for you to check out as well.

The brake pads are indeed included with Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D-8. The races are included and are already installed in the rotor and hub assemblies. The bearing kits come with races so you can get the bearings and seals individually. You will need 2 of inner bearing # L68149, 2 of outer bearing # L44649, and for a pair of seals use # RG06-050.

The reason the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, part # K2HR35D-8 is limited to 10 inch to 13 inch wheels is because of the hub surface. My contact told me that the rotor size at 8 inches would not have enough mating surface for the wheel and can cause it to wobble if too large of a wheel is installed on the hub.
