Disc Brakes are Better Than Drum Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Unlike drum brakes, disc brakes deliver consistent braking, even at highway speeds. Disc brakes also offer a substantially shorter stopping distance. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, so there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace.

Over-the-Hub Rotors for Easy Replacement

Slip-on, cast iron rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub and use your existing wheel bolts to hold it in place. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

The rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage.

Video Transcript for Review of Hydrastar Trailer Brakes - Tandem Axle Disc Brake Kit with Actuator - HYD24VR

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Hydrastar Slip-On Rotor Disc Brake Kit with the Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Tandem 6,000 Pound Trailer Axles, and these have a six on five and a half inch bolt pattern. Now more and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes and with good reason, 'cause unlike drum brakes, these disc brakes here will deliver consistent braking, even at highway speeds. And what's nice is disc brakes also offer a substantially shorter stopping distance. The calipers on the system, they have only one moving part in them, so that means there's fewer parts that have to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace.

This is an all-inclusive kit. It does have everything listed here on the table that you need to switch your trailer over to disc brakes for improved performance and greater stopping power. If you notice the slip-on rotors right here, these will slide over your hub. Very easy to install. They fit over the standard idler hubs and they're held in place by your existing wheel lug nets.

So what's nice is there's no need to have to replace your entire hub and rotor assembly if only the hub or the rotor becomes damaged. So this will give you four disc brake end kits for two axles. Again, these are the slip-on Dacromet coated cast iron rotors. Also comes with the inner and outer bearings. The grease seals.

The calipers right here, that'll come with the brake pads and the installation bolts. And it also comes with the Dacromet coated caliper mounting brackets here that are designed to fit on a five bolt brake flange. As you can see, we've attached the calipers to the mounting bracket just to show you what they look like. Now the Dacromet coating on these parts, so on the rotors, the calipers, caliper mounting brackets, is corrosion resist. So it is great for marine applications.

Now I wanted to zoom in onto the actuator. This is an electric over hydraulic brake actuator. This here will activate your trailer brakes when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle. It does install on your trailer frame. You can see the wiring here, it'll connect to your trailer's wiring. And this kit comes with the included brake lines. Now it does create a nice, smooth, even braking with a fast response time. Works with most in-cab brake controllers. Now we mentioned the brake lines you can see here, the brake line kit includes the solid brake lines, the flexible brake lines you'll need, and all the hardware and fittings for a tandem axle trailer. Now we do list on this product page of this product, all the part numbers that are included with this kit. A few specs, again. Application is tandem axle trailers with 6,000 pound axles. Bolt pattern six on five and a half inches. Ad the diameter on the rotor is 12 inches. But that should do it for a look at the Hydrastar Slip-On Rotor Disc Brake Kit with the Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Tandem 6,000 Pound Trailer Axles.
