Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes - Disc Brakes - K71-633-2 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter e-coat, 10 inch hub and rotor disc brake kit, with the five on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, for 3,500 pound EZ Lube axles. Now these trailer brake assemblies will make it very easy to upgrade from drum brakes to disc brakes for better performance. Disc brakes'll give you more consistent stopping, even at highway speeds, dramatically shorter stopping distances, and they're easier and less expensive to maintain. This kit will include everything shown here on the table. Includes two full brake assemblies for one axle. You get the two e-coated rotors, the two e-coated hubs with the bolts already pressed in, two of the e-coated ductile iron calipers with the stainless steel mounting bolts. And they also have the semi-metallic brake pads included in the calipers.

Two of the e-coated caliper mounting brackets with the bolts and nuts to install it. And all the bearings, the bearing races, grease seals, and a EZ lube grease cap should need for installation. These parts are all an e-coat finish, provides corrosion resistance for fresh water, and limited salt water use. The rotors are a vented rotor design. You can see right here, this'll help regulate temperature to prevent overheating. The include hubs right here, these will replace your existing hubs.

The calipers they use are self adjusting calipers to ensure maximum surface contact for a nice smooth, equal braking. I mentioned the brake pads that are included, the brake pads are a semi-metallic brake pad. They help resist heat, provide excellent grip. The grease caps that are included with these, they do feature the removable plugs. And the reason they do that's for easy access to that grease zerk fitting that's onto the end of an EZ Lube axle. The mounting brackets that the calipers will attach to, they are made of a ductile iron.

They provide strength and durability. Now, one thing I do want to mention, is this whole kit does require a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines, that are required for brakes to be activated. And because you're going to disc brakes, it does require a psi rating of at least 1,600 psi. Those items we do sell separately on our website. They're usually listed on this product page as a related product. These parts are made in the USA.

Again the specs on this, it's designed to fit 3,500 pound EZ Lube axles. The wheel size on this'll work from 14 inch up to 15 inch. The bolt pattern on the hub is the five on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Wheel bolt diameter is a half inch diameter. The rotor diameter's 10 inch diameter on the rotor. On your mounting brake flange, you can see it is a four bolt brake flange configuration. Now the bearings, they do include both the inner and outer bearings. The inner bearing part number is going to be L68149, has a 1.378 inner diameter. The outer bearing is going to be a part number L44649, has a 1.063 inner diameter. Now, the bearing races that the bearings go in, they are already pre installed into the hubs, inner and outer. The grease seal, that's included, it is a double lip grease seal. It's part number 58846. Has an inner diameter of 1.719, and an outer diameter of 2.565. And then again, we mentioned the EZ Lube grease caps. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter e-coat, 10 inch hub and rotor disc brake kit, with the five on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, for 3,500 pound EZ Lube axles.

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes

  • Installing Disc Brake Rotors with E-Coat Finish
No, the E-Coat is not to be removed from the rotors. The E-coat is a protective coat that will prevent corrosion but it will not cause issues with coating your brake pads or have any negative impact. The Dexter Disc Brake Kit - 10" Hub/Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - E-Coat - 3,500 lbs # K71-633-2 comes ready to install. I recommend packing the bearings of the hubs as usual using a grease packer like # PTW1218 and once that installation is done, then you can simply wipe down the other parts...
