Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes - Electric Drum Brakes - K23-478-479 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna take a look at the Dexter ten-inch never adjust electric trailer brake assembly kit with the left hand and right hand assemblies for 4400 pound axles. Electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary. This kit will include the ten-inch by 2 1/4-inch driver's side and passenger side electric trailer brake assemblies and the mounting hardware.

The brake shoes on these brakes are lined with an automotive brake friction material. The friction material is fully bonded. It's not riveted to the shoes. It gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. These brakes are never adjust brakes.

They automatically adjust to deliver optimum performance and braking power, so there's no need for manual brake adjustments, and the proper adjustment helps lead to better brake efficiency and less wear on your tow vehicle's brakes. And you can tell the automatic or never-adjust brakes as you'll see this cable here, and it'll come down and connect to this lever that connects to the adjustment wheel at the bottom. That's how it automatically adjusts your brakes. Also we just switched this over to the backing plate at the very bottom. There's two holes here. When you initially install these, you do need to adjust them, and then after that they'll automatically adjust, but there's two holes at the bottom of the brake plate right here that you'll stick your screwdriver or brake adjustment tool to to adjust that gear.

Normally they just leave those holes open. What's nice here is they put these rubber adjuster plugs in it to cover those holes to help keep dirt and grime out of the assemblies and off your brake shoes. Also if you'll notice these four studs; it is a four-bolt brake mounting flange bolt pattern with the mounting nuts to install it. These parts are made in the USA. The dimensions I mentioned on these, the size of the brakes, are ten inch by 2 1/4 inch, and where they get that dimension from I'm gonna measure it for you.

Let me get a ruler here. The ten inch is gonna be the diameter, so that's gonna measure from this shoe directly across to this end of the shoe. So you can see if we put a ruler on it, there's your ten inch diameter, and the 2 1/4 inch is actually the width of the shoe or the pad on the shoe. So if you measure the brake pad, there's your 2 1/4 inch. The weight capacity is 2200 pounds per assembly, so if both these are used on the axle, it meets your 4400 pound axle rating. These do use ten inch drums. The wheel size that these'll work with, the 13 inch diameter, 14 inch, and 15 inch diameter. These are electric brakes, so you'll notice on the back of the brake you'll have these two black wires. They do need to be connected. One will go to your brake feed. The other goes to the ground. They're both black wires, so either wire can be used for either function. And the last thing I just wanna mention to you is lots of times we'll get a question and people wanna know how they can tell the difference between the left hand and right hand side. Now of course on a new brake assembly you'll see the sticker here that'll say that, but if the sticker wasn't on there, the easiest way to tell is just look at the length of the pad on the shoe. The pad here goes from here to here. On this one goes all the way from here to here. This is longer, this is shorter. Shorter pad is always your primary shoe, and that'll always face the front of the trailer, so that'll tell you what side. So this one is for your left hand driver side, and if we look at the other one, you can see the shoe goes here to here, or the pad I mean goes here to here. It's longer. This is shorter. So that's your primary. That'll face this way, so that's your right hand passenger side. That should do it for the review on the Dexter ten inch never adjust electric trailer brake assembly kit with the left hand right hand assemblies for 4400 pound axles.

These brake assemblies were an exact fit for my Dexter Axle. The kit came with everything needed to change it out, including the bolts to attach the brake backing plate. Very straightforward instructions. Fast shipping. I would recommend E-Trailer for any parts. 508654

I recently removed the brake drums to check the brake pad wear and found the pads to be wearing evenly and no adjustment was needed. Self adjusting brakes are the way to go as an easy upgrade to the brake system.

When the castle nut backed out a little on the left rear tire on my trailer my wheel bearing and tire were destroyed. I decided to replace all the brakes and the one wheel bearing since the rest were fine. I ordered the Dexter nev-r-adjust kit. It arrived 2 days later and I installed them today. I also ordered all new nuts and bolts and lug nuts. Easy peasy. 414953

Item: 23-458: This item Is a replacement for my 5th wheel camper. Do to the fact while traveling the brake did not release and failed on interstate I-40 late in the evening. The heat caused all the parts on the spindle to fail. The cost of replacing brakes, drum, bearing, seals, grease, plus service cost is Very Expensive after hours. Having these items on hand can save a lot of time and money. Etrailer parts are top quality and best online price. Thanks 321760

Received my order of four Dexter brakes, disappointed they were removed from original manufactures box and lumped into a larger box with paper stuffing. Plates were scuffed up in shipping needing touch up paint. Brake components seemed ok. other than that etrailer is my go to vendor. 418420

etrailer? What a find! There are many local trailer parts suppliers around my area, but finding genuine replacement parts is difficult. They all seem to be pushing "open-stock" generic parts that are of questionable lineage, as far as I'm concerned. etrailer not only has the parts that I need, but they are also a very good knowledge source to help find what you need and then to show you how to install it. I found etrailer by viewing one of their many YouTube instructional videos. I paid for expedited shipping and they handled everything else. I received exactly what I ordered when it was supposed to get here. It was very well packaged and in the high-quality OEM (Dexter) packaging. With their assistance, I was able yo get our Boy Scout Troop's trailer back on the road and ready for their next expedition adventure. 433655

Comments

Our Scout Troop is very satisfied with the decision to replace our old non-adjustable Dexter trailer brakes with the automatic adjusting ones when brake replacement was required. This self-adjust feature eliminates the need for my constant surveillance of the individual brakes adjustment so that uniform braking can be assured. The system has worked flawlessly and everyone who tows the trailer is happy with the performance. Buying the complete backing plate-shoe-actuator-solenoid assembly when service is required is also the best way to go. The kits came from eTrailer in Dexters original individual packaging, bundled into another sound shipping box. Instructions were clear and there was no risk of product damage from the loose shipping method that other suppliers or stores use. Id only like to suggest that new seals also be included in the kits. Otherwise, these brakes AND eTrailer are First-Class.

Although I have yet to install them, the products look good and I am pleased with everything so far except at the initiation of the order. After I placed the order online I never received a confirmation or tracking number. I called etrailer two days later and the order hadn't been processed. Everything was in stock so the order was then processed but did not ship until a day later. Processing and more timely shipping would be very much appreciated in the future. Thank you. 396181

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

I ordered my electric brakes about 2 weeks ago and received them in very good packaging. The shipping boxes were very heavy with heavy paper wrapping around the inside of main box and no parts were scattered about. I Just installed them on my coleman tent trailer last week and it took about 2 hours to put them on. Very easy job. My trailer had not been installed with brakes so I had to do a little extra work to hook up wiring, but still an easy process. The instructions were very clear and easy to understand. I did have to also order a brake away switch after finding my trailer did not have one and I had ordered that from etrailer also. Over all I had a very good experience with my order and with their parts. Thanks etrailer 574529

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

I ordered my new replacement brakes for my 2013 Aluma tadem axle trailer and did receive the order in a very timely manner. They were so easy to put on, and as of this time I am leaveing on vacation and will not have time to complete the job until I return. When I return I will finish the job and then break then in according to the instuctions. I used my old drums and so will do the brake-in at that time. The only thing I can say is I wish the 2 wires would have been about 3 inches longer, had to wait to mount the backing plate until the wires were hooked up. This could have been done by Aluma too, as they could have given the extra wire also. This is the only way to go, is affordable and it gets rid of all the rust and old parts. I would recommend this product to everyone. THANKS FOR THE GREAT SERVICE! 472375

i have only used the new brakes for 1000 miles or so, but they have worked as expected. delivery was prompt. i would definitely buy from etrailer again. when installed, i was chasing a brake issue which my in the cab brake controller identified as an intermittant short circuit. i could have diagnosed the cause to a specific wheel, but decided to replace all four wheel brake assemblies since the existing units were original, about 12 yrs old, but in good condition. doing so did not fix the problem, but eliminated the brake assemblies as a possible cause. the cause of the fault was in one of the two cross axle wire cables. i replaced all of the trailer brake wiring starting ahead of the forward axle, and that solved the issue although i was not able to find the exact location of the short. while replacing the cable, i re-routed the wiring so that none went through an axle tube and the length of the cable to each wheel brake was equal to the others. keeping the runs equal in lenght insured equal power to each wheel with the hope that all four wheels would brake evenly. 601149

Very easy to swap these new assemblies onto the trailer. Remove the five nuts, pull-off old assembly assembly and you're ready to install new brakes. Not having to pull the individual components off as is done on a car makes this a snap. Looking forward to see how well self-adjustment feature really works. 439559

These went on very easy, and worked great right out of the box. It was nice to have them all match. I spliced them in a couple days before going on a 1,000+ mile vacation to Arizona. They've worked flawlessly (I check them to make sure they aren't hung up). This was just one headache eliminated for the trip by just getting new brakes instead of messing around with junky old ones. We've had the toyhauler out on several other trips also. I will purchase again if I need any for another trailer. 340587

The brakes have been working great. After the initial installment and adjustment, I havent had to do any additional work to any of them. They are performing great, really better than I expected. I always test them with my brake controller when I first get back on the road and they have always worked. I have recd a few of my friends to buy any parts they need from your website as it was easy and had lots of options trailer stores around here are pretty limited.

The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brakes arrived promptly and with no problems. I ordered nuts and washers separately as I read other reviews stating these brakes did not come with them. My brakes did include nuts for the plate studs. The brakes fit perfectly on my 1987 Airstream Sovereign. I set the initial adjustment very loose than drove about 30 miles in town and on the highway with stops from various speeds to ensure they self adjusted correctly. It’s only been a week since I installed these brakes but so far they seem to be great. 515718

Replaced old non-self-adjusting trailer brake assemblies with new self-adjusting ones. See photos of old & new. TIP: Temporarily tape new wires out of the way to avoid pinching them between the axle flange and backing plate when mounting the new brake assemblies (ask me how I know). 211142

Very helpful over the phone ordering the correct break assemblys. The breaks arrived a day early so I was able to install them before I left for work which was nice. OTR Driver! Installing complete assemblys helped make the job faster and knowing I have all new parts vs just break shoes helps to insure me I'll have long life with the breaks on my trailer! The fit was great and new nuts were provided to mount the back plate to the axle! Very happy with the entire process from ordering to completion of the install! When needed will order again from etrailer! Thanks! 405787

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

These brakes are supposed to self adjust like the name says, but since I’ve had them (about 1 year now) I’ve crawled under my trailer 5 times to adjust them. Good news is they only need to be adjusted when they’re out of adjustment. Usually I find out that they’re out of whack when I’m on a 7% grade towing a 10,000 lb load and someone cuts me off. The brakes get some pressure and swing the tounge causing my truck to steer. You can set the brake power output on flat ground testing if they lock etc. but won’t really know they’re out of adjustment until it’s time to stop. Bottom line they don’t adjust the way they’re supposed to. 559722

Comments

It may sound like an extremely simplistic solution, but youll want to make sure you have the correct brake assembly on the correct side of the trailer. The silver semi-circular lever that the magnet is attached to should be on the side of the brake assembly closest to the front of the trailer. In this instance, # 23-464 should be installed on the left, or drivers side of the trailer, and # 23-465 should be on the right, or passenger side. If they are reversed, it would indeed prevent the trailer brakes from staying in adjustment, and would actually back off the brake shoes over time, which sounds exactly like what you have going on.

etrailer folks were diligent in getting my order out ASAP when they got the shipment from the manufacturer. The quick response will provide for a safer trip to a horse venue some 4.5 hours away. The brake assemblies would be better with longer (maybe 18") actuator wires to make the electrical hook-up location more flexible without having splice wiring. 443751

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

I was replacing the 20 year old electric brakes on my utility trailer and choose the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brake kit. The non Dexter brand cost less but after adding shipping and adding the nut kit they were the same as the Dexter brakes with free shipping and the nuts were included with the Dexter kit. This was one the easiest projects I have ever done. I had recently replaced the bearings so getting the brake drum off was a breeze. I used butt connectors with the heat shrink insulation wot connect the power to the bakes. I had thought this would be a two day project but did both sides in about 3 hours. And best of all, the new brakes function as they should, it was like I did not have electric brakes before. Again an easy and well worth it project. 486235

In October Hurricane Michael struck and I have used the utility trailer more than I ever anticipated and have had zero problems from the brakes. Moving equipment & debris became a daily task.

Everything went together easily. Easy install. Only issue was the easy grease hub covers could have been a little heavier duty. Metal was a little thin and bends/warps out of shape easily. Very good customer service while ordering and quick delivery. 576505

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

Parts received ahead of the expected delivery date. Replaced trailer brakes with new and everything went well. Watched a couple of etrailer videos related to the new brake parts before i ordered so all questions I had were answered before I made the purchase. It may be a while before I need anything again; but I will make future purchases. 574191

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

I purchased 4 of the Nev-R-Just drums for my 1999 enclosed trailer. I had been fighting the elec brakes in that trailer for years, re-wiring the drums and replacing the magnets on some of them. But I just got tired of it and found these had great reviews, are made in the USA and quite reasonably priced. Shipping was super-fast, but I only live a couple of hundred miles from where they shipped. The worst part of the install was getting the old drums off. I think they used some kind of crushed nut type lock nut on them at the factory as they were HARD to turn the whole way out. And I had soaked them with PB Blaster for a couple of days before hand, as well as using WD40 during the extract. I could only get my impact on 1, maybe 2 nuts per wheel because of interference. I had 4 of the studs break loose from the old drums and just start turning. I had to use my die grinder on the brake shoe side to get the assembly off. Quite a job there. But the new stuff bolted up nicely. I soldered all the wires, used heat shrink tubing and the split loom tubing on top of that. So a nice, clean install that will hopefully last for years. I've towed the trailer once since the install and the difference is very clear. So nice to have all 4 brakes working well again. Only gave it 4 out of 5 for two reasons. First is the test of time. I think these will last for years, based on the reviews, but only time can determine that. Second is the lack of includes. I did see from the reviews I needed to order the nuts and lock washers, but missed that I'd need the rubber plugs for the adjuster holes on the back. These have two of those holes per drum where my old ones only had one. So I ended up 4 short and am now searching for them. It would be nice if they added $2-3 per wheel and just included that stuff. 117736

I agree.. why would we not need nuts, washers n plugs... thought that was not right to leave out..spent more time acquiring nuts than doing the installation...cheap...

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

These brake kits came fully assembled and clearly labeled. I was replacing a brake that got warped because the backing plate studs had come loose and the actuator arm didn't move freely anymore. I decided to go with a higher quality USA made product with self-adjusters. These are very high quality and a moron can put them on. I'm living proof. The only pain in the neck part for me was drilling out the old studs. That took a few minutes with a high quality Cobolt 7/16" bit. Then it is just a matter of 2 wire splices (I soldered them also), four nuts (I put locktite blue on them), and minimal adjustment of the brake shoes, put on the hubs, re-grease, and good to go! Thank you. 550121

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

I recently completed a brake upgrade on my trailer. The new Never Adjust Dexter Brakes went on flawlessly. I found the process to be straight forward. The self-adjusting feature was an upgrade from the previous brakes but bolted on with no issues. I like the idea of not needing to adjust brakes as the pads wear down. I needed all new brakes, this seemed like the best decision for replacements. 539350

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

Very nice product. Just installed today. Installed these on a boat trailer hauling a 26ft boat. After adjusting and driving around for a few minutes I could definitely tell I had help stopping the trailer from the brakes. I did have to turn my brake controller all the way up to get a noticeable difference in braking. Hoping after using for a bit they will adjust to where they need to be and I can back my controller power back down. But overall great fit and great product. Very helpful staff at etrailer and great communication! 495770

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

One of the easiest brake jobs you'll have to do. Squirt a little WD40 on old nuts, or something similar, and let sit a while. Disconnect wires, undo nuts, pull assembly off. Put new assembly on, make sure they are on correct side( it matters, watch video). I ordered the nut and lock washer set, just to be sure. These came with just the nut, so you could get the washers separately. Tighten nuts to proper torque, as stated in directions, connect wires, and done. I also ordered the plug kit for adjustment window. You need two per side. These did come with them, but good for me that I ordered more, as one arrived chopped in half. Can't knock points off for that. 454270

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

This is the exact brake assembly that came on my trailer when it was new (18ft aluminum car hauler by R and R Trailers of Three Rivers MI) . Same part from the same manufacturer. I purchased 4 new ones because after 3 years of non-marine use, one of the brake linings came off and locked up one of the trailer wheels causing it to flat spot one of the tires bad enough to require the tire's replacement. Shipping: I received them very quickly. But of the 4 assemblies ordered, 2 of them had damaged wiring due to poor packaging by the seller. I considered sending them back, but because I needed to use the trailer soon, I simply repaired the damaged wires and installed them. Removal: This is not easy or fun. Each of the brake assemblies is held on with 4 mounting studs and nuts. These nuts are 7/16-20 i.e fine thread, which are not included. This wasn't really a problem except that these nuts were not in stock at my local Home Depot, Lowe's, or Tractor Supply. After driving all over the place looking for the mounting nuts, I finally found them at Fastenal. Removing the existing brakes was a nightmare. After soaking the existing mounting nuts in PB Blaster, I tried to remove them to find that they were so difficult to get off that they actually caused the studs to break free from where they had been pressed into the backing plate and just spin freely. Of the 16 mounting studs (4 studs x 4 brake assemblies) only 3 of them actually came off and the rest had to be cut off. This pretty much took all day to accomplish. Again, the existing trailer brakes were the *identical* brake assemblies that I purchased, but with 3 years of highway use. I would expect this much difficulty if it was on a boat trailer due to the regular submersion in water, but I would expect less corrosion on a car hauler. Installation: Once I had cut off the existing brake assemblies, Installation was not very difficult. Before I mounted them, I took them down to my local welder and had him tack weld the studs in place so that they wouldn't break free from the backing plate when/if I ever needed to remove these again. I anti-seized the studs and mounted them to the trailer & connected the wiring. I had to reuse the star wheel access port plugs because they did not come with new plugs. I think this is an ok product considering that these brake assemblies adjust themselves as the shoes wear down, and I find this greatly superior to the other method of having to adjust them yourself. I would actually still consider purchasing these brakes again, even after all that. My complaints are as follows: - shoe failure after 3 years of highway use resulting in tire failure - damaged wiring due to poor packaging - lack of mounting nuts and the difficulty in finding new ones - lack of new access port plugs, - *especially* the poor quality of the backing plate and studs A product with a "made in USA" label just shouldn't have this many issues with it. 233921

Well, you may not see the actual brake controller in these shots, but I wanted to display just how much etrailer product was used to restore this old trailer. Re-decked the trailer, new wheel bearings, added brakes on all 4 with this brake controller and battery powered emergency disconnect... new rust protection, primer and paint, new lights and wiring all the way around, new wiring harness/box, and new tire carrier. Nearly all product except the decking and paint was from etrailer. the customer support was fantastic, I highly recommend this company! 546742
