Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes - Electric Drum Brakes - K23-478-479 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna take a look at the Dexter ten-inch never adjust electric trailer brake assembly kit with the left hand and right hand assemblies for 4400 pound axles. Electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary. This kit will include the ten-inch by 2 1/4-inch driver's side and passenger side electric trailer brake assemblies and the mounting hardware.

The brake shoes on these brakes are lined with an automotive brake friction material. The friction material is fully bonded. It's not riveted to the shoes. It gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. These brakes are never adjust brakes.

They automatically adjust to deliver optimum performance and braking power, so there's no need for manual brake adjustments, and the proper adjustment helps lead to better brake efficiency and less wear on your tow vehicle's brakes. And you can tell the automatic or never-adjust brakes as you'll see this cable here, and it'll come down and connect to this lever that connects to the adjustment wheel at the bottom. That's how it automatically adjusts your brakes. Also we just switched this over to the backing plate at the very bottom. There's two holes here. When you initially install these, you do need to adjust them, and then after that they'll automatically adjust, but there's two holes at the bottom of the brake plate right here that you'll stick your screwdriver or brake adjustment tool to to adjust that gear.

Normally they just leave those holes open. What's nice here is they put these rubber adjuster plugs in it to cover those holes to help keep dirt and grime out of the assemblies and off your brake shoes. Also if you'll notice these four studs; it is a four-bolt brake mounting flange bolt pattern with the mounting nuts to install it. These parts are made in the USA. The dimensions I mentioned on these, the size of the brakes, are ten inch by 2 1/4 inch, and where they get that dimension from I'm gonna measure it for you.

Let me get a ruler here. The ten inch is gonna be the diameter, so that's gonna measure from this shoe directly across to this end of the shoe. So you can see if we put a ruler on it, there's your ten inch diameter, and the 2 1/4 inch is actually the width of the shoe or the pad on the shoe. So if you measure the brake pad, there's your 2 1/4 inch. The weight capacity is 2200 pounds per assembly, so if both these are used on the axle, it meets your 4400 pound axle rating. These do use ten inch drums. The wheel size that these'll work with, the 13 inch diameter, 14 inch, and 15 inch diameter. These are electric brakes, so you'll notice on the back of the brake you'll have these two black wires. They do need to be connected. One will go to your brake feed. The other goes to the ground. They're both black wires, so either wire can be used for either function. And the last thing I just wanna mention to you is lots of times we'll get a question and people wanna know how they can tell the difference between the left hand and right hand side. Now of course on a new brake assembly you'll see the sticker here that'll say that, but if the sticker wasn't on there, the easiest way to tell is just look at the length of the pad on the shoe. The pad here goes from here to here. On this one goes all the way from here to here. This is longer, this is shorter. Shorter pad is always your primary shoe, and that'll always face the front of the trailer, so that'll tell you what side. So this one is for your left hand driver side, and if we look at the other one, you can see the shoe goes here to here, or the pad I mean goes here to here. It's longer. This is shorter. So that's your primary. That'll face this way, so that's your right hand passenger side. That should do it for the review on the Dexter ten inch never adjust electric trailer brake assembly kit with the left hand right hand assemblies for 4400 pound axles.

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

Item: 23-458: This item Is a replacement for my 5th wheel camper. Do to the fact while traveling the brake did not release and failed on interstate I-40 late in the evening. The heat caused all the parts on the spindle to fail. The cost of replacing brakes, drum, bearing, seals, grease, plus service cost is Very Expensive after hours. Having these items on hand can save a lot of time and money. Etrailer parts are top quality and best online price. Thanks 321760

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

I ordered my new replacement brakes for my 2013 Aluma tadem axle trailer and did receive the order in a very timely manner. They were so easy to put on, and as of this time I am leaveing on vacation and will not have time to complete the job until I return. When I return I will finish the job and then break then in according to the instuctions. I used my old drums and so will do the brake-in at that time. The only thing I can say is I wish the 2 wires would have been about 3 inches longer, had to wait to mount the backing plate until the wires were hooked up. This could have been done by Aluma too, as they could have given the extra wire also. This is the only way to go, is affordable and it gets rid of all the rust and old parts. I would recommend this product to everyone. THANKS FOR THE GREAT SERVICE! 472375

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

Excellent product. Original Dexter replacement assembly. Each brake assembly was individually sealed in plastic, packed in a thick cardboard box. My four boxed brake assemblies were then shipped in a larger single carton. Well done! The only minor criticism I can make is there was an overabundance of lubricant (grease) applied to backing plate wear surfaces. I will need to remove the excess grease during installation to avoid having the grease migrate to the brake pads during operation. 617895

So wonderful to have brakes automatically adjusted instead of doing it manually and wondering if all four wheels have equal braking. I know what happens when one brakes more than the others: over-heating and failed wheel bearings. Not fun. 663205

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

These brake kits came fully assembled and clearly labeled. I was replacing a brake that got warped because the backing plate studs had come loose and the actuator arm didn't move freely anymore. I decided to go with a higher quality USA made product with self-adjusters. These are very high quality and a moron can put them on. I'm living proof. The only pain in the neck part for me was drilling out the old studs. That took a few minutes with a high quality Cobolt 7/16" bit. Then it is just a matter of 2 wire splices (I soldered them also), four nuts (I put locktite blue on them), and minimal adjustment of the brake shoes, put on the hubs, re-grease, and good to go! Thank you. 550121

Comments
Overall I would say the assembly is working well, however I am a bit disappointed with the braking power. I adjusted the shoes manually and then adjust my electric actuator to the maximum, and I only get moderate braking. Maybe I have to change the other 2 axles, but for now it is working well enough.

Trailer axles with EZ-Lube spindles like # R20384EZ or Bearing Buddy grease caps like # BB1980A-SS do certainly make it a lot easier ensure your hubs are adequately greased, but like many before you (and many that will inevitably follow) you have found out that this feature also makes it easy to accidentally over-fill your hubs with too much grease which can result in blown out grease seals and also contaminated brakes. I currently have three diffrent self-adjusting assemblies for your boat trailer with 10" x 2-1/4" electric drum brakes which are attached for you below. eTrailer Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35-SA (3,500 Axles) Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-468-469 (3,500 Axles) Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # K23-478-479 (4,400 Axles) The eTrailer brand is going to be the economy line and the Dexter brand is going to be the premium line....

  • Do 4400-lb Electric Drum Brakes Use Same Mounting Pattern as 3500-lb Brakes
All of our 10 x 2-1/4-inch electric drum brakes for 3500-lb axles use a 4-bolt mounting pattern and this is the same as the 4400-lbs brakes we offer such as Dexter self-adjusting brakes # K23-478-479 and standard brakes # K23-462-463-00.

  • Replacement Electric Brakes and Grease Seal for Lippert 4,400 Pound Axle
For your Lippert 4,400 pound axle I definitely recommend going with 4,400 pound electric brake assemblies. Lower rated assemblies will have a weaker magnet that won't provide sufficient stopping for a heavier trailer like yours. For this the Dexter Electric Brake Kit # K23-462-463-00 or the Nev-R-Adjust # K23-478-479 for easier maintenance will work perfectly. Both the Left and Right Hand assemblies are included with these kits. I reached out to Lippert and was able to track down the...

  • Are Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brakes Self Adjusting
You actually already have self adjusting brakes on your 2018 Rockwood 2606WS. We label our self adjusting brakes Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting, like part # AKEBRK-35-SA, where Dexter labels their self adjusting brakes Nev-R-Adjust, like part # K23-478-479.

  • How to Determine 3,500 lb Electric Brake Assembly Fitment
The Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Right Hand - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35R-SA and Left Hand # AKEBRK-35L-SA may be a fit for your 2016 Heartland Mallard M32 though you do need to ensure you have the correct weight capacity, drum size and brake mounting flange. However, since you referenced a part number for brakes that fit trailers for axles before 2009, you may be talking about a kit from Dexter for 4,400 lb axles. Since you have a 2016 trailer they would not fit,...

  • How To Find Braking Assemblies For 2003 Dutchmen Travel Trailer Model 28BH-SSL
There are not normally markings on the brake assemblies themselves to tell you what size you need; however, there is a way to find out which size brake assemblies you need. You want to measure your hub diameter and depth using the diagram I have attached. You also want to find out if the trailer has electric or hydraulic brake assemblies. To find out which capacity of brake you need you want to check the axle for the axle capacity which is normally stamped into the metal or on a sticker. From...

  • How to Determine Correct Electric Brakes for 5th Wheel Trailer
I assume you are looking for electric brakes and for a drum with a 4,400 lb axle that has a 12 inch diameter a great option is the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 12" # AKEBRK-7-SA. These are rated for more than your axle's capacity but the only brakes available for 4,400 lb axles are 10" such as the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # K23-478-479. You do need to make sure you have a 5-bolt mounting flange bolt pattern; it will also require Mounting Hardware...

  • Ford Integrated Trailer Brake Controller Compatibility with Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brake Assemblies
The Ford TBC will work just fine with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brake assemblies. The Ford TBC really only has issues with Electric Over Hydraulic brake actuators, so we do recommend an aftermarket controller in those instances and an aftermarket controller would then require the TBC to be disconnected. I've attached an article to assist. For electric brakes, the self-adjusting assemblies have absolutely no bearing on the factory Ford systems. If your trailer has 10 inch brakes, then...
