Best replacement brake assembly for dexter 7k axles! Never thought my mammoth trailer could stop so well. 609038

Diana was very helpful when ordering these brakes. The prices are good and everything arrived at the promised time in good condition. The brakes are an exact replacement of the original and everything went together well. One of the easiest brake jobs I’ve ever done. I recommend etrailer and will buy from them again. 474694

After one year the brakes are working as expected. I really like the way they self adjust.

When the castle nut backed out a little on the left rear tire on my trailer my wheel bearing and tire were destroyed. I decided to replace all the brakes and the one wheel bearing since the rest were fine. I ordered the Dexter nev-r-adjust kit. It arrived 2 days later and I installed them today. I also ordered all new nuts and bolts and lug nuts. Easy peasy. 414953

Very easy to swap these new assemblies onto the trailer. Remove the five nuts, pull-off old assembly assembly and you're ready to install new brakes. Not having to pull the individual components off as is done on a car makes this a snap. Looking forward to see how well self-adjustment feature really works. 439559

These brakes are supposed to self adjust like the name says, but since I’ve had them (about 1 year now) I’ve crawled under my trailer 5 times to adjust them. Good news is they only need to be adjusted when they’re out of adjustment. Usually I find out that they’re out of whack when I’m on a 7% grade towing a 10,000 lb load and someone cuts me off. The brakes get some pressure and swing the tounge causing my truck to steer. You can set the brake power output on flat ground testing if they lock etc. but won’t really know they’re out of adjustment until it’s time to stop. Bottom line they don’t adjust the way they’re supposed to. 559722

It may sound like an extremely simplistic solution, but youll want to make sure you have the correct brake assembly on the correct side of the trailer. The silver semi-circular lever that the magnet is attached to should be on the side of the brake assembly closest to the front of the trailer. In this instance, # 23-464 should be installed on the left, or drivers side of the trailer, and # 23-465 should be on the right, or passenger side. If they are reversed, it would indeed prevent the trailer brakes from staying in adjustment, and would actually back off the brake shoes over time, which sounds exactly like what you have going on.

etrailer folks were diligent in getting my order out ASAP when they got the shipment from the manufacturer. The quick response will provide for a safer trip to a horse venue some 4.5 hours away. The brake assemblies would be better with longer (maybe 18") actuator wires to make the electrical hook-up location more flexible without having splice wiring. 443751

Although I have yet to install them, the products look good and I am pleased with everything so far except at the initiation of the order. After I placed the order online I never received a confirmation or tracking number. I called etrailer two days later and the order hadn't been processed. Everything was in stock so the order was then processed but did not ship until a day later. Processing and more timely shipping would be very much appreciated in the future. Thank you. 396181

Great product , works fantastic. Really nice not having to crawl up under the trailer and manually adjust brakes. Very time consuming operation and as luck would always have it. Needed to be done at the most inopportune times. I am going to swap all of my trailers over to the NEVER ADJUST BRAKES set up and run them from here on! 721848

Was great that the trailer hub and drum included new pressed in races with bearings, grease seal, nut and keeper. The convenience of having everything in one package saves you the hassle trying to look up and order these components separately. Likewise, the trailer brake assemblies. take old assy off, put new one on w 5 bolts. Glad the instructions included proper torque spec. Else - how would you know? Had to lightly sand slight bevel (1/64 ") at outer edge of each brake shoe. Drum fit quite tight or wouldn't fit at all w/o slight edge bevel to allow you to get it started. 717669

Very simple exchange of parts, everything went just perfect, no problems. I soldered all wire connections & used heat shrink tubing and electrical tape @ connections. I also eliminated the wire running through the inside of the Dexter axles and put the wire on the outside of the axle, that is the wire that runs from one side to the other. No more electrical shorts. 657731

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

I have been buying various products from etrailer.com for many years, and they always go out of their way to make the process as pleasant and simple as possible. I ordered the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit late Thursday afternoon, and it was delivered to me by noon the following Monday. Prices at etrailer.com are always good, and free shipping on orders over $99 makes them even better. I also appreciate all the help etrailer provides with their how-to videos. I'll be buying all my future trailer parts from them. 582264

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

Excellent product. Original Dexter replacement assembly. Each brake assembly was individually sealed in plastic, packed in a thick cardboard box. My four boxed brake assemblies were then shipped in a larger single carton. Well done! The only minor criticism I can make is there was an overabundance of lubricant (grease) applied to backing plate wear surfaces. I will need to remove the excess grease during installation to avoid having the grease migrate to the brake pads during operation. 617895

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

Item: 23-458: This item Is a replacement for my 5th wheel camper. Do to the fact while traveling the brake did not release and failed on interstate I-40 late in the evening. The heat caused all the parts on the spindle to fail. The cost of replacing brakes, drum, bearing, seals, grease, plus service cost is Very Expensive after hours. Having these items on hand can save a lot of time and money. Etrailer parts are top quality and best online price. Thanks 321760

Review from a similar Dexter Axle Nev-R-Adjust in Trailer Brakes

These brake kits came fully assembled and clearly labeled. I was replacing a brake that got warped because the backing plate studs had come loose and the actuator arm didn't move freely anymore. I decided to go with a higher quality USA made product with self-adjusters. These are very high quality and a moron can put them on. I'm living proof. The only pain in the neck part for me was drilling out the old studs. That took a few minutes with a high quality Cobolt 7/16" bit. Then it is just a matter of 2 wire splices (I soldered them also), four nuts (I put locktite blue on them), and minimal adjustment of the brake shoes, put on the hubs, re-grease, and good to go! Thank you. 550121

Comments

Overall I would say the assembly is working well, however I am a bit disappointed with the braking power. I adjusted the shoes manually and then adjust my electric actuator to the maximum, and I only get moderate braking. Maybe I have to change the other 2 axles, but for now it is working well enough.

  • Most likely yes since the Dexter brake assemblies part number # 23-464-465 are designed to fit standard 7K trailer axles like you'd have but it wouldn't hurt to check first. Take of a hub drum and measure the inside diameter and width. If it's 12 inch by 2 inch and the assembly is held to the brake flange with a 5 bolt pattern then this kit is the correct fit for it. I also attached a review video for these assemblies and a link to a page on adding brakes to a trailer you might find helpful.

  • How to Choose Replacement Electric Brakes for 2003 Layton Skyline Camper
  • The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-464-465 referenced in your question are 12 inch brake assemblies designed for 7,000 pound axles. Based on my research, the total weight of your Layton Skyline Camper should be between 4,700 and 5,700 pounds, depending on the exact model you have. The camper also has 2 axles, which would make it unlikely to have axles with a higher 7,000 pound capacity. In order to find the correct replacement brakes for your camper, you will...

  • Which Electric Brakes Will Give the Best Performance?
  • Dexter and Hayes/Al-Ko make quality brakes and one isn't necessarily better than the other. The majority of the time, the biggest factor in determining the life of a brake is going to be the load it is asked to help stop, the ruggedness of the ride, how often it is used and proper adjustment. Brakes that are self-adjusting such as the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-464-465 are popular because adjustments are made automatically and enhance the brake's performance - and...

  • Using Dexter 7K Electric Brake Assemblies on 6K Trailer Axle
  • The 7K Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes, which comes in a set with both the Left Hand and Right Hand assemblies included as part # 23-464-465, can certainly be installed on your 6K axle assuming its 5 bolt pattern matches your existing flanges. In terms of size and bolt pattern these are indeed interchangeable with the Dexter 6K # 23-458-459. You are correct that the difference between the two sets just comes in their braking strength since they are meant to stop different...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Shoe Wear on Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brake Assemblies
  • The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 7K # 23-464-465 that you mentioned have a brake material thickness of 3/16 inch. If you are measuring only the brake shoe material and not the metal plate and have that 3/16 inch measurement, then it appears the assemblies were either not installed correctly or they did not function as designed. I recommend replacing them if you have any question about their braking abilities. It could be...

  • Replacement Trailer Brake Assemblies for Dexter 7k Automatic Adjusting Assemblies
  • The brake assemblies you have are Dexter 12 inch assemblies with a 7k capacity. That means the current part numbers you would want are # 23-464 for the left hand side and part # 23-465 for the right hand side. The part # 23-464-465 that you referenced actually is both of these assemblies kitted together.

  • How Can I Identify an Axle Without a Sticker?
  • Thank you for the pictures! It looks like you've got some sort of square drop axle on your trailer and if you can't find an identifying sticker, I can still help you figure out what you've got so that you can make the swap to electric brakes on your trailer. It looks like you've got 6 bolts on the wheels, which can help narrow down our search, but we'll need to know what size the brakes on the trailer are and if possible, what size (or number) the inner and outer bearings are on the...

  • Is Lippert and Dexter 5-Bolt Trailer Brake Assembly Bolt Pattern Same
  • Yes, the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-464-465 that you referenced fits the same 5 bolt mounting flange found on Lippert and Dexter 6k trailer axles. This kit is for 7k axles though so you'd want the 6k kit part # 23-458-459 which also fits and is same dimensions. The difference between these two kit is the magnet sensitivity. While it might seem tempting to install brakes with a higher weight capacity it actually will make setting the brake controller up more...

  • Who Makes the etrailer Electric Trailer Brake Kit
  • AxleTek makes the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-7-SA which will work in place of a Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit like part # 23-464-465. They come with a one year warranty. They are an excellent cost effective alternative to the Dexter braking assemblies.

  • Are Dexter or AxleTek 12 Inch Brakes Better
  • The Dexter braking assemblies are going to be our premium line and the AxleTek braking assemblies are going to be our economy line. Therefore, the Dexter braking assemblies will be of better quality than the AxleTek braking assemblies though both are good options. If you have 12" diameter x 2" wide electric drum brakes then I recommend using part # AKEBRK-7-SA for AxleTek and part # 23-458-459 (6K) or part # 23-464-465 (7K) for Dexter. These assemblies are all self-adjusting which means...

  • For Made in America 12 x 2-inch electric drum brakes for your 2003 Mobile Suites trailer with tandem 7K axles I recommend the Dexter kit # 23-464-465 for each axle if you want self-adjusting brakes. If you prefer standard manual-adjust brakes instead then use two of kit # 23-180-181. Either way you will want to order two kits to be able to fit new brakes on both axles. For mounting hardware you can use parts # 38LW, # 7-5 and # 38N (five of each per brake) and for a brake adjustment...
