Although I have yet to install them, the products look good and I am pleased with everything so far except at the initiation of the order. After I placed the order online I never received a confirmation or tracking number. I called etrailer two days later and the order hadn't been processed. Everything was in stock so the order was then processed but did not ship until a day later. Processing and more timely shipping would be very much appreciated in the future. Thank you. 396181

Diana was very helpful when ordering these brakes. The prices are good and everything arrived at the promised time in good condition. The brakes are an exact replacement of the original and everything went together well. One of the easiest brake jobs I’ve ever done. I recommend etrailer and will buy from them again. 474694

When the castle nut backed out a little on the left rear tire on my trailer my wheel bearing and tire were destroyed. I decided to replace all the brakes and the one wheel bearing since the rest were fine. I ordered the Dexter nev-r-adjust kit. It arrived 2 days later and I installed them today. I also ordered all new nuts and bolts and lug nuts. Easy peasy. 414953

These brakes are supposed to self adjust like the name says, but since I’ve had them (about 1 year now) I’ve crawled under my trailer 5 times to adjust them. Good news is they only need to be adjusted when they’re out of adjustment. Usually I find out that they’re out of whack when I’m on a 7% grade towing a 10,000 lb load and someone cuts me off. The brakes get some pressure and swing the tounge causing my truck to steer. You can set the brake power output on flat ground testing if they lock etc. but won’t really know they’re out of adjustment until it’s time to stop. Bottom line they don’t adjust the way they’re supposed to. 559722

It may sound like an extremely simplistic solution, but youll want to make sure you have the correct brake assembly on the correct side of the trailer. The silver semi-circular lever that the magnet is attached to should be on the side of the brake assembly closest to the front of the trailer. In this instance, # 23-464 should be installed on the left, or drivers side of the trailer, and # 23-465 should be on the right, or passenger side. If they are reversed, it would indeed prevent the trailer brakes from staying in adjustment, and would actually back off the brake shoes over time, which sounds exactly like what you have going on.

Very easy to swap these new assemblies onto the trailer. Remove the five nuts, pull-off old assembly assembly and you're ready to install new brakes. Not having to pull the individual components off as is done on a car makes this a snap. Looking forward to see how well self-adjustment feature really works. 439559

etrailer folks were diligent in getting my order out ASAP when they got the shipment from the manufacturer. The quick response will provide for a safer trip to a horse venue some 4.5 hours away. The brake assemblies would be better with longer (maybe 18") actuator wires to make the electrical hook-up location more flexible without having splice wiring. 443751

by:

Not very impressed with the product. I have to put my brake control on the highest setting and they don’t operate or grab like I would expect brand new brakes to work. I’ve tried adjusting them up and do the break in procedure recommended and still no change or stopping power 754850

I reached out to my contact at Dexter, and he confirmed the brakes will auto-seat themselves after around 30 stops after the brakes have been installed. You mentioned going through the initial adjustment process to help shorten the break-in period. Your brakes may just need a couple more stops to fully seat.

Great product , works fantastic. Really nice not having to crawl up under the trailer and manually adjust brakes. Very time consuming operation and as luck would always have it. Needed to be done at the most inopportune times. I am going to swap all of my trailers over to the NEVER ADJUST BRAKES set up and run them from here on! 721848

Was great that the trailer hub and drum included new pressed in races with bearings, grease seal, nut and keeper. The convenience of having everything in one package saves you the hassle trying to look up and order these components separately. Likewise, the trailer brake assemblies. take old assy off, put new one on w 5 bolts. Glad the instructions included proper torque spec. Else - how would you know? Had to lightly sand slight bevel (1/64 ") at outer edge of each brake shoe. Drum fit quite tight or wouldn't fit at all w/o slight edge bevel to allow you to get it started. 717669

Very simple exchange of parts, everything went just perfect, no problems. I soldered all wire connections & used heat shrink tubing and electrical tape @ connections. I also eliminated the wire running through the inside of the Dexter axles and put the wire on the outside of the axle, that is the wire that runs from one side to the other. No more electrical shorts. 657731

For your 7,000 lb axles with 8 bolt hubs, the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 5.2K to 7K # AKEBRK-7-SA or the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 7K # 23-464-465 will be a great fit. The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-464-465 rated for 7,000 lb axles will work with your Dexter 6,000 lb axles but the braking aggression would not be ideal and I do recommend sticking with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-458-459 rated for 6,000 lb axles. The etrailer.com Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA and the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Brake Kit # 23-464-465 referenced in your question are both self-adjusting assemblies that will work to replace the existing Dexter brakes on your 7,000 pound axle. Between the two options I actually do recommend going with the etrailer.com # AKEBRK-7-SA and not only because of the much friendlier cost. To get the entire replacement assembly, you want the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 5,200-lb to 7,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 12" - 8 on 6-1/2 # 42866UC3-EZ....

  • Will Dexter 12 inch Brake Assemblies Fit 2009 Texas Pride Tandem Trailer
Most likely yes since the Dexter brake assemblies part number # 23-464-465 are designed to fit standard 7K trailer axles like you'd have but it wouldn't hurt to check first. Take of a hub drum and measure the inside diameter and width. If it's 12 inch by 2 inch and the assembly is held to the brake flange with a 5 bolt pattern then this kit is the correct fit for it. I also attached a review video for these assemblies and a link to a page on adding brakes to a trailer you might find helpful.

What will affect the life of the pad is how often the brakes are used, if they are frequently halting heavy loads and if the ride is on rough terrain.
