  • How Much Torque is Required for the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Hit # 23-406-407 Mounting Bolts?
I confirmed with Dexter Axel that the mounting bolts on the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit # 23-406-407 require 90 foot/lbs. of torque when tightening.

  • Debating With Switching To Electric Over Hydraulic Disc Brakes Or Hydraulic Drum
I recommend you go with electric over hydraulic disc brakes because of their stopping power. They also have fewer moving parts which means less maintenance. You basically get the best of both worlds with an EOH system with disc brake assemblies because you have the advantage of the stopping power of hydraulic brakes but the reaction time of electric brakes because you can use a brake controller. I have linked an article that explains the parts you need to add disc brakes to your trailer....

  • Can Dexter 15K Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly Be Used on 12K Axle
Yes, you can use the Dexter 15K Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly # 23-407 in place of the 12K # 23-409 on your trailer axle. Both share the same 12-1/4" x 5" dimensions and 7 bolt pattern so physically there isn't any difference in terms of fit with your existing drums. The main difference between the two assemblies is the size of the wheel cylinder that's used. When using the 15K assemblies on a 12K axle you may just notice a slight increase in the braking aggression, although the self-adjustments...

  • Converting From Dexter 12K Disc Brakes to Dexter 12K Drum Brakes
The correct Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit for your Dexter 12K Axle is part # 23-408-409. The Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit part # 23-406-407 that you referenced is for Dexter 15K Axles and will not work for you. The Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Kit uses the same brake mounting flange as your disc brake setup so it will be a direct swap. However, you will still need to obtain the hub and drum. Unfortunately, we do not carry these but the correct part number for the hub is part 8-214-8UC1...

  • Replacement Brakes For Gooseneck Trailer With Heavy Axles
The largest set of brakes we will have is for a 15K axle. We have two options, the Dexter Electric Brake Kit, # 23-446-447 for 15K axles with 12-1/4 x 5 Inch Drums.

  • Is the Replacement Brake Adjuster Kit for Dexter Self-Adjusting Brakes for Hydraulic Brakes
The Replacement Brake Adjuster Kit for Dexter 12-1/4" Forward Self-Adjusting Brakes # K71-472-00 is definitely designed for hydraulic brakes. It can be easy to assume that hydraulic brakes mean disc brakes, in which case they would be correct. This part, however, is for hydraulic drum brakes. Although this is slightly different, the brake adjuster for hydraulic drum brakes is located on the assembly at the bottom just like an electric brake assembly. This can be seen on the Dexter Hydraulic...

  • Parts Needed to Convert Trailer With Tandem 15k Axles to Electric Over Hydraulic From Electric
We can get you set up with an electric over hydraulic system for your trailer with 15,000 lb tandem axles. I will say that you will not want to go with the higher pressure 1,6000 psi actuator, which is too high for drum brakes and can potentially blow out the wheel cylinder. What you can do though is go with a 1,200 psi actuator made for drum brakes, which will still give you excellent stopping power. Here is exactly what you will need for your set up: - HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic...

  • Converting From Electic Drum Brakes To Hydraulic Disc Brakes
To convert electric drum brakes to electric-over-hydraulic disc brakes you will need disc brake assemblies, a brake line kit and an electric over hydraulic actuator. For disc brake assemblies, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D13 kit is what I recommend. To determine the correct brake line kit you will want to measure the distance from your actuator to the front axle. The kits are measured in the distance from the actuator to the front axle. For a 20-ft, 24-ft, or 25ft brake line kit...
