Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes - Electric Drum Brakes - 23-180-181 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 inch electric trailer brake kit with the left and right hand brake assemblies for 7,000 pound axles. Electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes, and basically they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. There are a manual adjustment brake. Right down here is the adjustment gear that you would just turn this gear to adjust them in or out.

It does require a periodic manual adjustment. Also, what's nice is on the back of this, on the backing plate, if you notice the two holes, the access holes at the bottom that you would do your adjustment through, they do put plugs in there. These adjuster plugs are included. That's nice because it covers that access hole, keeps any dirt or grime out of your brake assembly and off your brake shoes. This part number will include the left hand driver's side and the right hand passenger side brake assemblies. The mounting hardware, you can see, for both assemblies is also included.

On the 12 inch size brake assemblies, like these are here, the bolts are usually already installed on the brake mounting phalange, so all you require is the nut with the lock washer and these are a combined nut with a lock washer. They are all included. Dimensions on these assemblies are 12 inch diameter by two inches wide. Those measurements, the diameter 12 inches would be from this shoe all the way across to this show. We'll go ahead and put a ruler on that, there's your 12 inch diameter.

The two inch wide is actually the width of the pad on the brake shoe. If we put the ruler on, there's your two inches wide. We mentioned the brake mounting phalange bolt pattern you can see is five bolts. You can see the five bolt holes right here. It does require the use of 12 inch brake drums. The wheel size that'll fit on these assemblies is 14 1/2 inch, 15 inch, and 16 inch.

These brake assemblies are designed for axles that are rated at 7,000 pounds. These are electric brakes, so you'll notice in the back they have two black wires coming out. They do need to be connected. One goes to the brake feed, the other one goes to a nice clean ground, and they're both black wires, so it doesn't matter, either wire can be used for either function. The last thing I just want to show you is how to tell the difference between the left hand driver's side and right hand passenger side. On a new assembly, of course, they'll have a sticker that will say right hand or left hand. That's easy enough, but if the sticker wasn't there and you just had to look at them, the easiest way to tell is just look at the length of the brake pad on the shoe. This pad goes from here to here and this one just goes from here to here, so this is the shorter pad. This is the longer pad. Shorter pad is always your primary shoe and that's always made to point towards the front of the trailer, so the primary shoe to the front would make this your right hand passenger side assembly. If we go to the other one, same way, this pad is all the way from here to here. This one is just from here to here. Shorter pad, primary shoe, goes to the front, so that tells you that this is the left hand driver's side assembly. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch electric trailer brake kit with the left and right hand brake assemblies for 7,000 pound axles.

Had for a year on a trailer stored outside. Carried heavy loads and work well. So far no issues. 726533

These were a perfect replacement for my worn out brakes. High quality parts and complete with all necessary hardware, except wire connectors. I assume they leave out the connectors because there are many options and preferences on what is best. I prefer wire nuts and that is what I used. Crimps or butt connectors could also be used. Very good price for complete brake assemblies and they are made in USA. I will buy these again the next time I need trailer brakes. 668813

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes

  • No Trailer Brakes on 2018 Voltage Toy Hauler After New Brake Install
I really suggest you just take the trailer back to the dealer and have them fix the issue because the second you try to fix their mistake, the warranty for the work they performed goes out the window. That said, if the brakes are humming then that means you are getting power. If the brakes are getting power but not engaging then the most common cause of this after a fresh install is that they have not yet been adjusted. There is a star wheel on the back for adjusting the tension on the...

  • How Many Brake Assemblies are in the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit 23-180-181
The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-180-181 comes with a left hand and a right hand assembly. If you are needing 4 assemblies you will need to purchase 2 sets of this kit. You can check out the assemblies in the review video I linked for you.

  • Inexpensive 12 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes for a 7,000 Lb Trailer Axle
Yes, the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-180-181 (23-180 + 23-181) is a top of the line option so if you are looking for a more cost effective solution I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-7-SA instead. These brakes are actually self-adjusting whereas the former are manual adjusting so they will be better in this regard.

  • Brake Controller and Self-Adjusting Brake Assemblies for Trailer
With any electric trailer brakes you will need a trailer brake controller. Many newer trucks come with an integrated electric brake controller from the factory so if you have that, you won't need to add an additional controller. If you have a 7-way trailer connector but no controller, the easiest controller to add is the Curt Echo # C51180. For your Self-Adjusting brake assemblies, there are two different sizes. If you have 12 inch diameter hubs then you will use the Electric...

  • Troubleshooting Weak Brakes of 2018 Eclipse Attitude FL28 SAG
If the drums look like they are in good shape you don't have to turn them when replacing the assemblies. Take a look at the inside of the drum and if you don't see any grooving or obvious signs of wear they don't have to be replaced. Typically if the brakes are adjusted properly and they are still acting weak the issue that the wiring isn't a heavy enough gauge to provide all of the amperage that is needed. You'll want the brake output circuit to be 10 gauge like part # 10-1-1 (sold by...

  • Difference Between the Two Types of 12x2 7000 lb. Brake Assemblies
The difference between the two brake assemblies comes down to one being self adjusting and one that is manually adjusted. I recommend the self adjusting because you will never have to crawl under the trailer to adjust the brakes. This can be a headache and we tend to not do it as often as we should which leads to poor performing brakes. With the self adjusting it automatically tightens as the shoes wear down keeping your trailer's braking performance optimized and working as safely as...

  • USA-Made Dexter 12 x 2-Inch Electric Drum Brakes for 2003 Mobile Suites Trailer with Tandem 7K Axles
For Made in America 12 x 2-inch electric drum brakes for your 2003 Mobile Suites trailer with tandem 7K axles I recommend the Dexter kit # 23-464-465 for each axle if you want self-adjusting brakes. If you prefer standard manual-adjust brakes instead then use two of kit # 23-180-181. Either way you will want to order two kits to be able to fit new brakes on both axles. For mounting hardware you can use parts # 38LW, # 7-5 and # 38N (five of each per brake) and for a brake adjustment...
