Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes - Electric Drum Brakes - 23-112-113 Review

Today we're gonna take a look at the Dexter 12 inch electric trailer brake kit with the left and right hand brake assemblies with parking brake for 6,000 pound axles. Now electric brakes, they're easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. They require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. Now these assemblies do come with the manual parking brake levers. You can see right here at the very top.

And that's if you have a parking brake on your trailer, you can attach it right to that lever. These are also manual adjustment brakes, so they do require periodic manual adjustment. Right down here is your adjustment gear where you just turn your gear either in or out to adjust your brakes. Now what's nice on these assemblies, on the very back . Backing plate here. There's two access holes at the bottom that allow you to put your tool through to adjust your brakes.

Normally, those holes are less open. Here, they include these adjuster plugs, which will cover those access holes. Helps keep any dirt and grime from getting into your brake assembly and off your brake shoes. Now this part number will include both the left hand driver side, right hand passenger side brake assemblies. As you can see, the mounting hardware is also included. Now on 12 inch size brake assemblies like these, the bolts are usually already installed on the brake mounting flange.

So all you have to do is put your assemblies on and then use the nuts and lock washers to tighten them down. And you'll notice, the mounting hardware these, they come with the integrated lock washer and the nut. A few specs on this. The dimension is 12 inch diameter by two inches wide. And what that's measuring is the diameter is from here to here. This shoe to this shoe.

So if we go ruler, there's your 12 inch diameter. And the two inches wide would be the width of the pad on the brake shoe. There's your two inches wide. And on the back, you can see the five holes. It's a five bolt hold. It's for the five bolt brake mounting flange. Now these do require our 12 inch brake drums. The wheel size it'll fit on there are 14 and a half inches, 15 inches, and 16 inches. And they are designed for axles rated at 6,000 pounds. Now these are electric brakes. If you'll notice in the back, they have two wide wires coming out the back. They do need to be connected. One goes to the brake feed, the other goes to good clean ground. And they're both white wire, so either wire can be used for either function. And the last thing I just want to show you is how to tell the difference between your left hand driver side and right hand passenger side. Now on new assemblies, of course, you'll have a sticker that'll tell you that. But if the sticker wasn't there, the easiest way to tell is just look at the length of the pad on the brake shoes. On this brake shoe, you'll see the pad goes from here up to here. Over on this one, it goes all the way from here to here. This is a longer pad. This is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is your primary shoe. That'll always face the front of the trailer. So it'll go this way. So that tells you this is the left hand driver side. And if you go to the other one, the pad is here to here. This pad is all the way from here to here. This is the longer. The shorter pad is this one, which is the primary. So that tells you this is the right hand passenger side assembly. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch electric trailer brake kit with the left and right hand brake assemblies with parking brake for 6,000 pound axles.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Brake?

  • Mounting Hole Pattern for Dexter 12 x 2 Electric Drum Brake 23-105-09
  • Most of our 12 x 2 electric drum brake assemblies like Dexter left/right kit # 23-112-113 use a 5-bolt mounting pattern but the Dexter brake kit # 23-105-106-09 has both 4-bolt and 5-bolt mounting holes. I went to our warehouse and measured the spacing of the 4 bolt holes. You can see this center-to-center hole spacing in the photo I prepared for you. Please note that we do have a brake in a similar size, 12-1/4 x 2-1/2, for a 7200-lb axle that uses a 4-bolt pattern. This is brake...

  • The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit w/ Parking Brakes - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 6K # 23-112-113 does use a cam action lever like what you stated, but they will be compatible with your current cable system. You will simply remove the cable and attach it to the back of these assemblies at the mounting location. This will absolutely work with the cabling you have pictured.

  • Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System for Off-Road Tear Camper
  • There is a lot to unpack here so I'll try address your concerns as best I can. First, you should not use a spacer of any kind to ensure your wheels fit; this would cause potential installation issues with the overall assembly not to mention void the warranties on each of the products you are looking at. The problem is if you need 8 inches to the hub face like what you get with the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR35HDS01. If this is a requirement for your wheels...

  • Replacing the Brakes on a 1966 Airstream Travel Trailer
  • The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-112-113 is designed for 6,000 lb axles that use a 5 bolt brake mounting flange. They are compatible with 14.5" to 16" diameter wheels. As long as your trailer has these requirements then the brakes will work well for you. Unfortunately, we do not have information as to what braking assemblies your 1966 Airstream trailer came with therefore you will need to go out to your trailer and physically count the bolt holes on the brake flange and measure...

Then you can use the Titan Breakaway and Parking Kit for Drum Brakes # T2385200 which will require you to make slight modifications for connection...

  • Can Dexter Brakes for 6,000 Pound Axle be Used on a 5,200 Pound Axle
  • Since the trailer has 12 by 2 inch hubs the Dexter Axle brake assemblies, part # 23-112-113, will fit just fine. They're rated up to 6,000 pounds as a maximum but a 5,200 pound axle uses the same size brakes, generally. I've linked a video on the brakes as well you might want to check out.
