Power and Sensitivity Adjustment

Once the brake controller is installed, you can use the knob on the right side of the unit to adjust the gain (also known as output). Gain lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. You want to set it as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Typically, this setting is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa.


Tekonsha Voyager

You can fine-tune the gain by adjusting the sensitivity of the internal sensor using the knob on the left side. This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. You can adjust this when you're towing heavy loads and you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does. A high sensitivity level will get the braking power to your trailer brakes faster and with more intensity so that it doesn't push your tow vehicle forward.


LED Indicator

Keeping with its simple design, the Voyager will not overwhelm you with information. An LED indicator on the top of the unit lights up green to show that your trailer is securely connected to your tow vehicle. The LED indicator will change to red when the brakes on your trailer are activated.


During installation and setup, this light is also used to ensure that the Voyager will be able to function correctly. Proper leveling of the internal sensor is crucial to the operation of this brake controller. When the sensor is level, the LED will change to a shade of orange.


Simple Installation

The Voyager is designed to be mounted in your cab at a vertical angle that is between -20 degrees and 70 degrees. The brake controller needs to be horizontally level and parallel to the direction of travel in order to function properly.

To connect the Voyager, just plug the included harness into your vehicle. The other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.


Once the controller is mounted and connected, you must level the internal sensor. First, set the overall power to the maximum using the knob on the side of the controller. Then, while pressing the tow vehicle's brake pedal, adjust the level knob on the other side of the brake controller (this is the same knob that is used to fine-tune the power output) until the LED monitor is a shade of orange.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Tekonsha Voyager brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.


The Voyager uses a pendulum system to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Video Transcript for Installing the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller on your 2016 Nissan Frontier

Today on our 2016 Nissan Frontier we'll be taking a look at, and installing, the Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller from one to four axles. This is a proportional brake controller. Part number 39510. To help us along with our installation, we will also be installing the Tekonsha wiring adapter. Part number 3050-P. With our brake controller installed, now's a good time to test it. Before we tuck our wires out of the way I like to get any testing done.

That way we're not having to fish our wires back out after if something we're to be wrong. Over here on the right-hand side, this is where we set the gain for our brake controller. This is going to determine the maximum output that we're sending back to our trailer. We have our manual override here. And over here, on the other side, is actually where we can determine how aggressive our braking is. Turning it all the way towards you is basically off.

The furthur up we go, the more aggressive our braking gets. What you'll ideally want to do . As you can see the colors are changing here from green to red. Somewhere in the middle we're going to get an orange-ish color and that's going to be a nice typical setting for your brake controller. You can see as we press on the pedal as well, we're going to get that output sent back to our trailer. We're here near the rear of our Frontier and I'd like to steer your attention to our tester box back here which is actually simulating a trailer connection.

And the reason we do that here in the studio is just so that you can actually see the output that our brake controller's providing. So I'm going to go ahead and head up to that brake controller and apply some power and I want you to take a look at things. So you can see I will be operating the manual override and you will be getting an output. As well as stepping on the brakes, you're able to see the power that is going back to your trailer. The manual override, the gain setting, is going to change the maximum output that we're sending back to our trailer. To being our install, we're going to be on our driver's side and we're going to up underneath the steering wheel, underneath the dashboard. That's where we'll need to locate our vehicle's factory tow package which is going to be this wire here.

The wiring adapter is going to plug right into that. Just an easy snap in place and this is what's going to allow us to connect our brake controller directly to our Frontier. So what we're going to do is we'll take the bracket along with our included hardware, and that's just a couple of self-tapping screws. That's going to allow us to go right into our panel here. It's not a bad idea to go ahead and drill it out before putting in your self-tapping screws just because there's also a metal plate behind there which is a good thing. It's going to give us extra grip, but it's also tougher just to get the self-tapper through. So I'm just going to go ahead and drill that out. We should have a much easier time running our self-tapper through. Let's repeat that same process on the other side. All right, with our bracket in place, we can now take our Voyager brake controller. Brake controllers going to have a pink tail 00:03:54 on the back which is going to meet up nicely with the wire that we just installed. With that installed, you can see we're getting a light here indicating that we are connected. So we can go ahead and we can place this in our bracket and use our included hardware to secure it. Just go ahead and carefully tighten that into place. Then repeat that same process on the other side. Now that we have everything working properly, the last thing we can do is bundle up our wires with a zip tie and we're just going to go ahead and tuck those up under the dash and out of the way. It's not a bad idea to maybe get a second zip tie and zip tie your bundle to a secure point up there. And that way you can insure that there'll be no interfering with your pedals while you're going down the road. And with everything working properly, and the wires all neatly tucked away, that will complete our install of the Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller. Part number 39510.
