The Tekonsha P2 is a classic brake controller you know you can rely on. It's easy to install, and with the custom harness, it's plug-and-play.

Gain is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to go as high as you can without the trailer brakes locking up.
You can adjust the gain by turning the thumbwheel on the front of the controller.
The boost setting controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, decrease the setting.
Depending on the level of boost, your trailer brakes can start at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the set gain. So instead of starting at 0, the brakes will start at 25 percent and get to 100 percent sooner. This keeps the trailer from pushing your tow vehicle forward.

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.
To engage the manual override, twist the rotary-style lever from right to left. This will activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights independently of your vehicle, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.
The Prodigy P2 offers key safety features to prevent damage to your towing setup:
- Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts.
- When the P2 is not in use, it draws only 3.6 milliamps to minimize the drain on your vehicle's battery.
- Any time your vehicle and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the hold feature will kick on and reduce power to just 25 percent. This will keep your trailer in place without your brakes overheating.
The Prodigy P2 also runs continuous diagnostics to check for problems as they come up, including:
Installing the P2 is incredibly simple. You'll mount the bracket to your dashboard then mount the unit to the bracket. Plug the custom harness into your vehicle and into the unit. Done!
Keep in mind that the P2 must be horizontally level and parallel with the direction of travel to work correctly.
With a replacement wiring harness (sold separately) and replacement bracket (P7685 - sold separately), you can even transfer the Prodigy P2 to another vehicle.

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.
The Prodigy P2 uses an internal inertia sensor to detect how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Today on our 2016 Nissan Frontier we will be installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part number 90885. To help us out with our install, we will also be installing the Tekonsha Wiring Adapter for Nissan vehicles, part number 3050-P. In order to test it out what we need to do is hook up our trailer which is what you'll be doing if you're watching this at home. In our case we happen to have a tester that simulates a trailer load so we've got that plugged in. As you can see, we now have a C instead of a NC for connection because we do have a trailer connection back there. We're able to do our manual override and see the output that it's giving to our trailer. We're also able to adjust our gain here as you can see.
That's the the maximum output that we'll be sending back to our trailer. We've got our boost over here as well on this button. We can cycle through our different boost settings depending on the size of our trailer. As you can see stepping on the brake we'll also activate our brake controller. Now we're back here at the rear of our Frontier and what you're looking at is our tester unit. You're going to be able to actually see on the gauges the output that would be going to your trailer while I operate the brake controller.
As you can see when I step on the brakes, we're getting an output to our trailer. If I go ahead and do the manual override, we can take that all the way up to our maximum gain setting which right now is 11 but you can see I can bring that gain down and we've got it down to eight. It's going to send exactly that out to our trailer. We can even go almost as far down as one to all the way down the zero. To begin our install we're going to be on our driver's side. We're going to go up underneath the steering wheel, underneath the dashboard.
That's where we'll need to locate our vehicle's factory tow-package which is going to be this wire here. The wiring adapter is going to plug right into that. Just an easy snap in place. This is what's going to allow us to connect our brake controller directly to our Frontier. We're going to take the bracket along with our included hardware.
That's just a couple of self-tapping screws. That's going to allow us to go right into our panel here. It's not a bad idea to drill it out before putting in your self-tapping screws just because there's also a metal plate behind there which is a good thing. It's going to give us extra grip but it's also tougher just to get the self-tapper through. So I'm just going to go ahead and drill that out. We should have a much easier time running our self-tapper through. Just repeat that same process on our other side. Now we've opted to of course install a metal bracket. If we'd wanted to, we could have used the pocket style as well but this is going to work out better for our set-up. So we'll go ahead and take our brake controller. The connection on the back is going to plug right into our Tekonsha wiring adapter giving us that connection with our factory tow package. As you can see we're getting NC right now. No connection. There's no trailer hooked up at the moment. Now we're ready to put our brake controller into place. We'll take our included hardware and run it through the sides. Kind of get it finger tight at first. We'll just go ahead and carefully tighten that up. Before we do so, we'll position the brake controller at the angle that's going to work out best for us. Something like that so we can see it when we're looking down. It's going to work out great. It's a good idea to bundle up these wires and get them out of the way so we can feel safe going down the road. Take a zip tie. Get that nice and tight. Cut off the excess from our zip tie. Then we can just tuck our wires up and out of the way here back up under the dash. We're all set. That will complete our look at the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part number 90885, on our 2016 Nissan Frontier.
