Welcome to an entirely new towing experience. The Curt Echo brake controller puts you in control of your trailer's braking with mobile, Bluetooth operation. The portable unit installs in seconds and allows you to make braking adjustments straight from your smartphone. Easily transfer the Echo between vehicles and store it when it's not in use.

Simple, Fast Setup

Curt Echo Plug In Brake Controller

With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Curt Echo is a breeze. Just download the Echo Smart Control app on your Apple or Android smart device and follow the in-app instructions. The brake control unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your vehicle and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. When all the connections are made, wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth. Once the unit is paired, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the user-friendly app.

See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Echo Smart Control App

The Echo Smart Control app is free to download and use. Scan the QR code included with the Curt Echo or search Echo Smart Control in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Curt Echo Manual Control

The custom-designed app allows you to control brake settings, calibrate output, and monitor all braking activity with the touch of a finger. If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override function is easily accessible in the app. Press and hold the large orange circle to manually activate your trailer brakes.

The app will also alert you in the event that your trailer is overloaded or becomes disconnected during travel. Should your smart device ever lose connection, the Echo will default to the settings of the last profile used. So even if your phone battery dies, you can still count on getting proportional trailer braking as long as the unit is in use.

There's no need to worry about missing a call or running multiple apps either. The Echo Smart Control app will continue running in the background if you get a call or switch between apps, and it will not interfere with your vehicle's hands-free multimedia system.

Create Multiple Vehicle-Trailer Profiles

Vehicle Trailer Profiles

The app has the ability to sync up to 5 Echo devices, and the memory function allows you to save unlimited vehicle-trailer profiles. This makes it easy to transfer the Echo between towing setups. This convenience, along with the plug-and-play design, makes the Echo perfect for either occasional towing or commercial fleets.

Weatherproof Construction

Curt Echo Features Diagram

Because the Echo is made to be outside the vehicle, it's engineered for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements, ensuring long-lasting operation despite rain, snow, dirt, mud, and more. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way RV-style plug. This tab helps to reduce vibration and improve connectivity.

LED Status Indicator

Curt Echo Diagnostic Indicator

A single LED on the body of the Echo shows the status of the brake control unit so that you can easily troubleshoot any problems that may arise.

Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.

Once the Echo is installed, it will sense - via an internal 3-axis accelerometer - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

A GREAT product! I use this for a 20ft. Carson enclosed trailer I tow with a Tesla Model Y. This solved the whole issue of installing a brake controller in the Tesla, as it simply plugs into the trailer wiring connector and pairs with my iPhone. My phone app acts as the accelerometer and the screen is a big red button that applies the brake if you need to. But, the accelerometer braking is smooth and steady and worked perfectly right out of the box in just minutes! This also allows me to have brakes if I want to use another vehicle to tow with, I just plug it in to that vehicle. THANKS CURT & etrailer.com!

This was so easy to use! The videos were a great source of inspiration, having not ever used a 7 pin connector before and about to tow a trailer a few hundred miles for the first time!

2020 Toyota Echo

The Curt Echo brake works flawlessly, and their support is over the top. We had a problem with our original Echo - due primarily to the wiring adapter etrailer sent that was mis-wired - the connections to the flat blades were reversed. It did something to the brake controller, but when I called Curt Echo they not only sent a new one, but had me stay on the line while they tracked one down to make sure it was in stock, and confirm that it would be sent out ASAP. Later, when I finally got my travel trailer, I called and they walked me through the settings I should use for the Echo. The new models have a strap that attaches it securely to the 7 pin connector. My only option for my Telluride turned out to be the best option.

Comments
Great! Except for the cheesy strap that helps secure the unit. I use some sturdy small stretch straps and some velcro straps to secure it at all points so it doesnt wiggle and lose contact.

Cell phone needs to be high enough to get a clear signal
Daniel R - 08/22/2021

The good news is the Curt Echo does not require cell phone service to function properly since it uses Bluetooth to connect.

So this is my 1-year review of this break controller. I guess I bought it a year ago, and got an email from etrailer asking me my thoughts on this, and because it works so well, I decided I would review it. I rent a lot of campers, as I don't own one, and I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a break controller installed and wired into my current vehicle. I didn't like the placement options, the look of them, anything about them really. While this unit is much more expensive than some break controllers, the ease of use for me more than makes up for it. I downloaded the APP, went through the setup, then plugged it into my 7-pin by my hitched, and it connected in less than 2 seconds. I have had zero connection, or loss of connection issues while I have been towing. That has been my experience. I have used it about 10 times since I bought it, so not a lot, but it has been reliable every single time. I like how easy it is to customize it inside the APP, and I like the big orange DOT on the phone that is easy to see and touch in an emergency if I need to. Thankfully I haven't. I also like how you can see how much of the break is being applied as you push down on your own break pedal. That makes customizing the amount of stopping force your trailer breaks use that much easier. When I go to pick up the campers that I have been renting, all of the camping owners have been really intrigued by it. Often they cannot rent their campers to people, because they require that the vehicle have a break controller, and not everyone has them. I didn't, and I couldn't rent some campers that I wanted to. Some have considered buying one for themselves, and then they can rent them to whomever rents their camper if they don't have a break controller in their vehicle. You can set it up any number of ways, and even create vehicle profiles as you move it from one vehicle to another. As you can tell, I'm a total fan of this device, and I would definitely recommend it.

- C51180
by:

Set up couldn’t be easier. Just download the app and it’s plug and play. The screen clearly indicates when the brakes are being applied and with how much power. Make sure you can test drive it before getting on the highway. Here’s why. I’ve had a couple instances where the brakes have been applied when I was not braking. The first time was pretty scary because I was getting on the interstate. If you press the red button on your phone this seems to resolve the issue. I’ve also just closed and restarted the app before and that worked. A minor negative is I’m concerned the length of the device with the wiring harness could cause it to disconnect while in the road. So I place a block underneath it for extra support with a zip tie.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado

Product works completely as described. Easy to add a controller to ANY vehicle that has a 7 point trailer plug like my 2018 Chevy Silverado (no factory brake controller but has a prewired 7 and 4 point trailer plug) or my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Trailer is a 2 axle CargoMate. App was a bit hard to find on the AppStore (iphone). Search "Echo" not Curt then it comes up. Set up is quick and easy to modify if necessary with load changes. App does not need to be normally running if you don't need to apply brakes manually. But if you do need to apply brakes, the response is surprisingly fast through the Bluetooth communication. No delay whatsoever. It doesn't interfere with other apps running either. I like to use navigation and stream music from my iphone 8. Only real issue I have with the product is that its not lockable. Very easy for someone who knows what they are looking for to just unplug and run. I parked overnight at a hotel and didn't realize it until the next day. Got lucky that it didn't get stolen, but now I'm aware and take it off when done towing.

The Curt C-51180 Echo Wireless Brake Controller was just what I was looking for. Did not!!! want to have holes drilled in my truck plus the inconvenience of more items added in the cab of my truck. The convenience of the C-51280 is very versatile and user friendly. It is as stated a "plug "n" go" unit. Also, the Customer Service Reps, Tech's at etrailer seemed to be very people orientated and treat each order as if it were their on. I Have enjoyed doing business with etrailer over the years and the products they sell have lived up to my standards & expectations which are just short of being on the high side of things. Thank you guys at etrailer...

2016 Subaru Forester

Worked very well the minute we set it up and got it paired. It was hard to tell if the trailer was responding since it appeared to pull and stop very evenly from the very beginning. I used the ETBC7L 4 pin flat to 7 pin converter kit. I connected the black power cable to the battery and hooked up the ground and BINGO it worked. It was a lot of work to get the black power feed cable from the controller to the battery but once it was all connected the controller just plugged right into the 7 pin adapter and the trailer plugged into the controller. I did have issues with it losing connectivity to my phone but that didn't seem to stop it from working. Great service from the folks at trailer. I paid for two day shipping and it arrived in two days in great condition. I bought the controller and the 4 pin to 7 pin converter kit together.

One year later and its still performing like a champ! I love this brake controller. Its simple. Safe. Plug and Play. I find myself not pairing it with my phone since the controller works just fine on its own. Plus, while Im driving I am not going to be checking my phone to access the manual inputs for the controller. Its automatic so I just let it do its thing and it works seamlessly. LOVE THIS PRODUCT!

Works as advertised. Coupled with the 7 Pin kit from etrailer I was able to avoid tapping into the wiring harness of my 2019 Subaru. I occasionally need to reboot my phone on startup to get the Bluetooth to communicate with he controller. But I lay that issue at the feet of the glitchy Subaru system.

I just got a new company vehicle that didn’t have a brake controller installed. I needed to make a trip on Monday morning with a 14 foot tandem axle work trailer. I ordered the controller Friday afternoon and it arrived Monday morning. I plugged it in and went through the setup in about 5 minutes and it worked perfectly. The easy installation and phone app control is exactly what I needed to make the trip on time!

Works great but is vulnerable to road debris. We ere trapped on freeway into running over part of a truck retread. Knocked the controller off completely and left us without brake lights and turn signals (or brake controller). We are debating replacing. May get one that connects inside car to avoid risk of losing another.

- C51180
by:

What a great device. Didn't want to go to the trouble/expense of installing a brake controller on my motorhome and this was just the thing! Plus you can use it on any other vehicle as well. Bluetooth doesn't work very far away (motorhome is too long), but it defaults to the last settings, so not really a problem.

- C51180
by:

Works great for those that don’t want to wire a controller. Biggest issue is the attachment point. It doesn’t feel as solid as I’d like. The rubber strap can pop open. I usually wrap a zip tie over the strap as insurance. Sometimes it shows that the brake is being applied, even though it isn’t. A quick tap of the brake pedal clears the glitch. It also sticks out pretty far. I’m on my second controller after the first was crushed during a tight u-turn.

- C51180
by:

My tow vehicle does not have factory brake controller. The Kurt wireless controller is really cool. I have used it many times and it works. It takes a few brake cycles to get it dialed in for your trailer and liking. For the money and ease I say buy it.

- C51180
by:

I am amazed how well this product performs! I haven't had a single failure since purchasing it about one year ago. It is easy to use and easy to adjust for various trailer loads. Fortunately, I have a vertical mount for my cellphone on the dashboard of my car which is required for correct operation.

- C51180
by:

I have been very pleased with this though there is a dearth of information in regards to the adjustments. I had a problem with the brakes "locking up" when in traffic and ended up using very light settings so they would engage smoothly. Another thing I could not find is with my car, the unit sits at about a 45 degree angle, I could not find anything that noted if this would be good or not. The plus is I changed tow vehicles without having to add the controller.

Comments
Thank you for your review. The Curt Echo can be installed in the 7-way plug at any angle and still operate properly. We have tested it on vehicles with 7-ways orientedangled in all different directions and it has performed well.

pretty good, though sometimes the connection is difficult to obtain. There has been a time or two where it just did not engage the breaks when I hit the button on the screen or used the pedal. This is rarely and fortunately I have a relatively light trailer in relation to me TV.

This is a really neat little controller! Zero install, nice. Paired with my iPhone in a second. Works as advertised, no connectivity problems. Easy to test just by listening to the brakes while stranding right there. Try that with a wired controller! Progressive braking seems just right at any speed. The app gives the info you need; CarPlay integration would make it a six-star review!

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE

First I checked my vehicle (2018 Mercedes GLE 350 4MATIC) fuse layout and found there was a single fuse missing and was able to replace it right away. Then when I went to pick up the RV I had my fingers crossed since I had no way to test the Brake Controller until actually having a trailer to connect to. Well it worked right of the bat, all the lights and the brake control was there immediately upon connection. I had to drive back home about 100 miles in LA traffic on some very rough roads and I never lost connection once. I discovered that the elastic strap pin had pulled out somewhere along the way but didn't cause any issues for me.

Works perfectly, no issues of dripping communication and best of all no need to run wires through your vehicle to hook up a typical brake controller.

2011 Ram 1500

Works well, except it loses Bluetooth connectivity - a lot. Not sure if this is the unit or my new phone (S21 Ultra), however is annoying. Simple to reconnect, but shouldn't have to. And it isn't distance related as it happens within 10 feet with nothing between. Happy with the performance and ease of setup. The button for connecting the strap comes out a bit too easily. It should be easier to close the app down - it doesn't seem to want to close.

Thank you for your review! A couple of things could be happening that would cause this issue. One would be that the Echo is not fully seated or connected, and another could be that your phone , if it is older, is getting intermittent signals. Also, you may try turning off other things in your phone such as WiFi or other Bluetooth devices as these could be causing interference in the connection. I hope this helps!

It works well. However, first time out, it disconnected from the auto plug in socket and was severely scuffed while dragging on the pavement. The weight of the unit, it’s added length to the socket, and the pull from the trailer cord all added together to cause it to disconnect. Good thing, it was not functionally damaged and still works normally. I now wrap a strong rubber band around it to insure the catch will not release the unit I’m also considering installing a Velcro strap around the unit for added security.

Comments
Still works wel. As I said, I wrap the two catches with Velcro and heavy rubber bands to prevent inadvertent disconnect. I also retired trailer connect to allow adequate length for connection due to special hitch. Would like to see better stronger latches to hold connection due to heavy unit leverage on connector.

There are a few differences between the Universal Installation Kit part # ETBC7 and the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit part # ETBC7L. Now to complete your towing setup I recommend using the Stealth Hitches Kit # 391TES317T...

  • Parts Needed to Install 7 Way Trailer Connector on 2021 Kia Telluride
We've got just what you need! You're correct that you'll need to start with a 4 way trailer harness like the Tekonsha # 118784, which will connect directly to the plug in at the rear of your vehicle. This will give you the base of what you need to add a 7 way connector. For that, since you're going to be using a Curt Echo # C51180, I recommend using the # ETBC7L since it's designed to be used with wireless brake controllers. You'll just need to make a connection to the battery and ground...

  • Installing Curt Echo Brake Controller in 2019 Ford F-150 without Factory 7-Way
So each 2019 Ford F-150 is going to have either a 7-way or 4-way connector; the 7-way would be obvious and you'd know if you had that, which means you are going to have the 4-way. It will be there, possibly hidden, so if you cannot find it you are going to want to check behind the rear axle on the driver side frame rail, and you should see the plug there. Once you find it you will be able to use the Curt Echo Brake Controller # C51180 on your F-150 by installing the 7-Way RV Upgrade...

I have a solution for you, but the port you're referring to does not allow the direct installation of a 7 way trailer plug on your 2021 Hyundai Palisade. If you don't have a 4 way plug already there, you'll need to start by installing one; for that I recommend using the Curt # CU94FR instead of the available Tekonsha harness since the Curt comes with a powered converter box that will do a better job of protecting the electrical system on your 2021 Palisade in the event of a short on the...

In order to use the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 on a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee you'll want to use the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation part # ETBC7L. The 12 volt power wire which is used to power the brake controller and charge the trailer battery will still need to be run to the battery. Therefore, you can indeed power the brake controller and charge the trailer battery at the same time. The benefit of the Curt Echo is not that...

  • How To Wire Brake Controller and 7-Way Plug In 2020 Hyundai Palisade
The Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195 needs to be wired to the cold side of the brake light switch which is normally located near the brake pedal. You would need to test the wires at the brake pedal for the wire that only shows power when the brakes are applied using a circuit tester like part # PTW2992. That is the wire that you would attach the red wire from coming from the brake controller. I have attached a diagram that shows how to wire the 7-way plug and brake controller into...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation/Install 2021 Kia Telluride with Factory 7-Way/Tow Package
It looks like you've got everything you need, except for a brake controller. The Curt # C51180 Echo Wireless Brake Controller would be very effective, with your vehicle being already pre-wired, the install would be plug and play. The only knock I have on the Echo is that it can't be locked to the vehicle. If you leave your vehicle unattended for a few minutes, somebody could walk off with it, which would leave you without functional trailer brakes. For this reason, and because you're...

  • Recommend Brake Controller for 2021 Subaru Ascent Without Factory Hitch
The Brake Controller that I would recommend is the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. This brake controller will plug directly in between the 7-Way on your 2021 Subaru Ascent and the 7-Way on your 2017 Airstream RV Sport 16. The great thing is there is nothing to mount in your Subaru so you can easily move this between vehicles as you need. And there is no additional wiring for this unit under your dash that you will need to have connected. This is also a proportional...

  • Easy to Install Brake Controller Recommendation for 2020 Ford Escape with 4-Way

Basically this just plugs into an active 7-way and once you sync it to your phone it's ready to go. This brake controller is proportional which means it senses the amount of deceleration your tow vehicle is applying and applies the trailer brakes in a relative way. To convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller only requires the 7-way adapter kit...
