Gain and Load Adjustment

Curt Discovery NEXT

Gain is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to go as high as you can without the trailer brakes locking up. Use the orange rocker switch to adjust the gain on a scale of 0.5 to 9.9 in increments of 0.5.

Once you have the gain set, you can fine-tune your braking by adjusting the load control on a scale of 1 to 9 using the black rocker switch. This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, decrease the setting.

LED Display

The LED display on the Discovery is large and easy to read at a glance. You can adjust the brightness or trigger night mode so it won't glare obnoxiously on your dash. It also will give you clear error messages you can use to troubleshoot.

Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the manual override. The included bracket is designed to mount the brake controller flush to the dash so it takes up almost no space at all.

The included custom-fit adapter plugs into the port on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness, which you'll find underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Once you're plugged into your factory port, just plug the other end of the adapter into the Discovery. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove the controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Time-Delayed Braking?

what is time-delayed braking

Time-delayed braking means that when you apply the brakes in your vehicle, the controller activates the trailer brakes at a pre-set intensity and rate. Both the amount of braking power (gain) and rate of application (load) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Video Transcript for How does the Curt Discovery NEXT Trailer Brake Controller fit on a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Howdy, dear neighbors, Ian with etrailer. And today, we're gonna be looking at the Curt Discovery, and kinda taking a look at the functions, and then the install for that unit. Let's get right into it. So, a couple great things about the Curt Discovery here opposed to some of the other units, it's gonna have a very small footprint when it's up there, but if you needed to remove it, it's just a quick disconnect, and we can use that nice harness that we've got down there, that's gonna be just factory plugs, so it's gonna look very factory underneath the dash, it's not gonna have any butt connectors or connections that you need to make where you're tying into wires opposed to just quick connecting. One other thing I wanted to mention about the size of that since we're talking about it, is that the Tekonsha units do seem to sit out a little bit further, I've got this one here just to kinda show the difference between what the profiles would be of the two. So, you could see the Discovery is gonna be a little more flush to the dash if visual appeal is gonna be a concern of yours with your brake controller.

The Discovery here is gonna be the mid-tier as far as the three Curt lines that they kinda compare all of 'em to the Venture, the Triflex are gonna be your lower end, and then your upper end. This Discovery, like the Venture, is going to also be time activation, opposed to proportional activation, so that is somethin' I felt worth mentioning. And then, does allow for one to four axles, two to eight trailer brakes. So, that is somethin' to keep in mind because the Venture is only gonna have the one to three axle option there opposed to one to four, Triflex also one to four there. And then, this unit does allow you to mount at any angle as well, we've put ours here, but if you wanted to put it somewhere else on the vehicle, it doesn't matter what angle you're gonna mount it at.

And then, the settings for this, it does have a few mode options, of course, your manual mode there. All of your presets for your gain are gonna be your orange arrows up and down here. And then, your load sensitivity is gonna be the black arrows here to be able to adjust those. Now that we've looked at all the great features of the Discovery, lemme show you how easy that install's gonna be. This particular harness gonna be a two-foot harness.

It does have our end here that will plug directly into the vehicle. And then, the opposite plug here is gonna plug into our brake controller. And hopping right into the install of our harness here, we're gonna come underneath the dash. There are just (tool shuffling) two push pins, one left and one right that are gonna get popped out. You may need to pick up a push pin removal tool off the website as well, or sometimes, you can get 'em off the flat head, just kinda slowly prying those out of there.

(component clicking) And then, once we've got these push pins removed here, we're going to pull this out just enough, we can access this little light for the footwell here, it's just a squeeze type plug, you may have to push (component clicking) a little pressure in (component shuffling) and then back out, and it should just come undone. And we'll set that off to the side for now. And this is where that custom plug is really gonna come into play, it's just ready for us to go right above this main set of harness, you'll see there's another gray connector that's gonna allow for that to just slide in. You'll wanna make sure your push release here is on top. And we'll just carefully plug that in. (connector clicking) And once that's how it's plugged in, you'll hear that little click, and then you can kinda just give it a little tug to make sure that's in there correctly. We're gonna go ahead and get that zip tied out of the way. I've got one spot here, it looks like a little indicator light, or somethin' like that that's got a bracket. So, I've just got that one zip tie on it, (connectors creaking) get that up there nice and snug. And then, I'm gonna leave this loose for now 'cause we're gonna be mountin' the brake controller up in this area. One thing I wanted to make sure to mention is, since this (hand tapping) airbag is here, you can get your hand up over the top of the vents that are under there and that airbag assembly, so that way, you can triple check (hand tapping) where you're gonna be puttin' this, you wouldn't wanna puncture any wires or any lines, or run into this airbag accidentally when you're puttin' the brake controller up. So, our Curt Discovery here is gonna come with some mounting screws. (Curt Discovery shuffling) There's a plate on the back of this particular controller (Curt Discovery shuffling) that just slides off these little pinch tabs, and then you pull up, it does have a halfway point, (Curt Discovery shuffling) so that way, if you're kinda limited on space of puttin' that up there, that will help with that issue. But you've got the option for the self tappers. Of course, you could use a double sided tape if you didn't really feel like tearing into that too much up in your dash. (hand shuffling) But again, we're gonna triple check, make sure there's nothin' behind the area we're gonna mount. And as soon as I've got this mounted, I'll show you kind of where we're gonna run the wires as well. (component clicking) On this one, I did find this little brackets not in place, so (chuckling) another place to secure that, you may have to find somethin' up underneath that's gonna allow you to get that last little bit of the harness out of the way. We've got our brake controller mounted up here, and I'm just gonna go ahead and plug that in. (controller clicking) And that's as simple as hooking that up. We'll just find another way to kinda get that end routed up out of the way and secured with a zip tie as well. Now that we've done everything set up, we'll just put it all back together, making sure (component shuffling) that we do get our little footwell light plugged back in. And then, we'll go over testing as far as making sure the system is working correctly. We're gonna start our test here just by giving the manual control a good squeeze, it's already at the setting that it just comes from the factory, I'm gonna leave it there for the time being, but that's indicating that we do have power at the control unit itself. Now, we'll hop to the back of the vehicle and just double check with our tester that all the lights and functions are working. We've got a nice testing unit that we're gonna use to double check all of our lights and functions. You can just hook up to your trailer to triple check that everythin's working. I've got Trevor up front, he's gonna run all of our information. Go ahead and run the manual for me, and we're just checkin' for that voltage coming through. Alright, that'll work! And left turn. You'll have to start it. (device rumbling) Alright, and right turn! Perfect. And then just brakes. Perfect, thank you! And you saw how easy that installation was. If you're gonna need that brake controller for any of your towing capabilities here on your 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee. That was the Curt Discovery Brake Controller. My name's Ian with etrailer, (soft music) do appreciate you, and have a great day.

I purchased this harness primarily to get the plug for my 2023 Grand Cherokee L Overland (with tow package). I had an Odessey brake controller with a cord for a Ford truck. The black fitting on this cord is identical to the plug coming from my brake control (both male plugs) so some splicing is required to utilize my old controller. I had difficulty locating the plug in my Jeep and could not locate photos or video of the plug location in the WL platform (current model Grand Cherokee). I have attached photos of where to locate the plug. It was a bit more forward and wrapped up with black electrical tape as shown in my photo.
If the black plug matches your brake controller, this should work perfectly for you.

Purchased this controller for a 2004 Toyota Tundra Limited and it has preformed perfectly! I haven't had any complaints. It reacts and adjusts quickly. Along with the plug and play function there's not much more I can say. Great product!

Great customer support on the front end to make sure I got the right part. Great support on the back end to make sure I was satisfied. Even to the extent that now one year later, I am on a tick file to make sure my experience continues to be great! It sure has been great and I look forward to more advice and purchases from E Trailer.

  • Brake Controller Installation on 2011 Toyota Tundra
If your 2011 Tundra has the factory tow package, which includes the factory installed 7-way trailer connector on the rear bumper, it will be equipped with the tow package plug under the dash, as shown in the photo I've edited for you. Some models with the factory 4-pole (or 4-pin) trailer connector will also have the plug under the dash, you'll need to look for a white plug located above and to the left of the emergency brake pedal, above the toe kick. Occasionally, the plug will be located...

  • Parts Needed to Add 7-Way and Brake Controller to 2007 Ford F-150 with 4-Way
If your trailer does not have brakes all you would need is the part # 37185 as an adapter to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. If you do have trailer brakes you would need the # 3035-P, the # 37185, and a brake controller. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to set up. Follow the 4-way trailer connector wires from the trailer connector to the front...

  • Troubleshooting a Curt Discovery Brake Controller That Has Jerky Brakes
Wes, it could be possible that your brakes are jerky after they are warm because you adjusted them while they were cold. So what you can do recommended to warm the brakes by applying the manual lever for a bit while driving at slow speed; once they're warmed you can adjust them properly. Another possibility is that the delay is set too long on the controller. I'd suggest trying to set the delay to activate sooner and see if that fixes it. If all that does not work, then there could...

  • What Is The Difference Between Proportional and Time Delayed Trailer Brake Controllers?
The Curt TriFlex NEXT Trailer Brake Controller # C24VV you are looking at is a proportional controller.
