Trailer-Mounted Brake Controller

Tekonsha Prodigy RF mounted

The Tekonsha Prodigy RF is a completely plug-and-play option that's easy to install and simple to use. It mounts on your trailer and connects via Bluetooth to a handheld remote that you'll keep with you in your cab. This remote gives you all the convenience of a wireless brake controller without tethering you to an app that will drain your phone battery or restrict how you can use your phone.

There's nothing mounted in the cab to get in your way with the RF either, so you won't be banging your knee on the controller as you get in and out of your vehicle. You don't have to mess with your vehicle's wiring or find a place to mount the controller where it won't interfere with your lower airbags. The Prodigy RF removes all of that hassle. It's convenient, out of the way, and works with all tow vehicles that have a 7-way trailer connector, whether they have older standard wiring configurations or newer PWM or multiplex systems.

The fact that the Prodigy RF installs on your trailer - and not in your vehicle - also means that you can switch back and forth between different tow vehicles with no additional setup. This is great if you have a fleet or want to have the option of sharing your trailer.

Tekonsha Prodigy RF review

Wireless Operation via Bluetooth

With the main unit mounted on the trailer, the plug-in remote puts control of your trailer's brakes right in your hand. In addition to offering fast and easy power adjustment and a manual override, it keeps your cab clutter-free and your towing experience simple. The remote plugs into your vehicle's standard 12-volt accessory outlet and controls the module wirelessly via Bluetooth. The large LED screen and user-friendly buttons make it easy to set your braking output, boost level, and to activate the manual override.

Prodigy RF module and remote key fob

You can use the knob on the right side of the remote to adjust the braking output. This will set the amount of power the brake controller sends to your trailer to bring it to a stop; how much you'll need will depend on the weight of your trailer. You can change the level while you're at a complete stop or while you're driving, and the brake controller will adjust accordingly. You'll want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. There is no need to adjust this setting unless you are going from an empty trailer to a fully loaded trailer or vice versa.

The button on the left is the manual override. It's large and easy to reach, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. When you engage the manual override, the trailer's brakes and brake lights activate without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

The boost setting controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking output. You can adjust this when you're towing heavy loads and you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does.

Depending on the level of boost, your trailer brakes can start at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the set braking output. What this means is that, instead of starting at 0, the brakes will start at 25 percent and get to 100 percent sooner. This keeps the trailer from pushing your tow vehicle forward.

To cycle through the different levels of boost, press the button in the right-hand corner of the remote. If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But, if you want your trailer to lead the braking, you can select level B1.

Boost Levels:

Approximate Gross Trailer Weight Boost Level Increase in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVW B1 13%
Equal to tow vehicle GVW B1 or B2 13% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVW B2 or B3* 25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVW B3* 25%

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Safety Features

The Prodigy RF offers key safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup. In addition to basic troubleshooting, this controller works to prevent problems before they begin. When the Prodigy RF is not in use, it will be in power-saving mode. After 2 hours of inactivity, the system will automatically go into sleep mode. Both of these modes are designed to drop the power draw, minimizing drain on your vehicle's battery.

The RF also comes equipped with a hold feature to prevent wear on your brakes. When you're waiting at a red light, you don't need your trailer brakes on at full power. The longer you sit there, the more they will overheat. But with the RF, any time your tow vehicle and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the hold feature will kick on and reduce power to just 25 percent. This will keep your trailer in place while saving your brakes.

In addition, the RF offers diagnostic codes to alert you to problems such as:

  • Open ground
  • Overload
  • Output short
  • Power loss
  • No trailer connection

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the Prodigy RF ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. Simply mount the power module on your trailer tongue or frame within ± 5 degrees of level on the horizontal plane and with the power cable extending toward the tow vehicle so the internal inertia sensor can function properly. Some drilling may be required.

Prodigy RF Trailer Mount

Once the power module is mounted on your trailer, plug the connector on the unit direcly into your vehicle's 7-way. The standard 7-way connector on the trailer plugs into the port on the back of the RF unit. Then simply sync up the handheld remote to the module as per the included instructions. Finally, plug the remote into any 12-volt auxiliary outlet in your tow vehicle for power.

Installation Accessories

See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Prodigy RF brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. Using an internal inertia sensor, this brake controller will sense how your tow vehicle brakes. It will then send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup, saving wear and tear on the tires and brakes of your trailer. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

  • Recommended Wireless Brake Controller for Easy Towing of Trailers Without Physical Mounting Required
The Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # TK94FR must be mounted to the trailer in a certain way in order to function correctly. It cannot be connected to the tow vehicle. A better option for you is the new Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 which is designed to be used on the vehicle side and can easily stow in your glove box when not in use. It utilizes Bluetooth for the remote function utilizing a downloadable app. Once paired and set, the phone...

The Prodigy RF Electric Brake Controller # TK94FR works with basically any vehicle that has a working 12 volt circuit on their 7-way. The 12 volt power of your 7-way is still ran to the trailer after the Prodigy so your breakaway battery will still receive power without any issue and you shouldn't have to worry about it. The LED lights won't be an issue either. If the 7-way adapter you have already has a functioning 12 volt pin then you won't need anything else. If it isn't then use...

The Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 and Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller w/ Bluetooth # TK94FR are going to be your easiest brake controllers to install on your 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE. • Which Wireless Trailer Brake Controller Is Best
Hey Brandon, I would strongly recommend sticking with the Tekonsha RF brake controller part # TK94FR. We know this works really well and it sounds like it worked well for you too. The Curt Echo is not reliable enough for me to really ever recommend it for anyone. The Autowbrake part # 3430001 is a really solid option too but the overall feedback we've gotten is that the RF is best overall. The Curt Truu Course part # C94VV is perfectly compatible with all of the mentioned controllers.

  • Can 20 Amp Circuit Breaker be Used with Tekonsha RF Brake Controller
Hey Fletcher, a 20 amp breaker on the 12 volt circuit can work with the Tekonsha RF brake controller part # TK94FR unless your trailer has 3 brake axles as then you'd need to bump up to a 30 amp breaker for that circuit. There wouldn't be a way to run a separate breaker for this brake controller and 12 volt accessory circuit since they use same circuit.

Good morning. Don. The SH error code for the Tekonsha Prodigy RF # TK94FR does mean there is a short somewhere along the brake control output circuit. A short would also explain the blown fuses. This is usually caused by cracked, pinched or broken wires. I suggest that you inspect this wire and repair/replace as needed. I also suggest that you make sure your trailer connecter is properly grounded to good clean metal. Also check to make sure the pins on your trailer connector are not rusted...

Yes, you can use the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # TK94FR on a vehicle that has an in-cab brake controller installed but you will need to remove the blue brake output wire from behind the 7-way or unplug the brake controller before attaching the trailer. The 12 volt pin will also need to be active on your friends 7-way in order for this to work. If it is not then you will need part # 10-1-1 (per foot) and part # 9510.

Performance-wise the Prodigy RF part # TK94FR and the Curt Echo part # C51180 are right on par with each other. They are both proportional controllers which means they will sense the amount of braking applied and apply the trailer brakes in an equal amount. The big differences are that the Echo does not permanently install on the trailer like the RF does. It basically just plugs into the 7-way. So an easier install...with the added risk of being easily stolen possible (we've not seen this...
