Curt Echo Manual Control

The custom-designed app allows you to control brake settings, calibrate output, and monitor all braking activity with the touch of a finger. If ever there is a time that you need to brake your trailer separately from your tow vehicle - when traveling down a steep incline, for example - the manual override function is easily accessible in the app. Press and hold the large orange circle to manually activate your trailer brakes.


The app will also alert you in the event that your trailer is overloaded or becomes disconnected during travel. Should your smart device ever lose connection, the Echo will default to the settings of the last profile used. So even if your phone battery dies, you can still count on getting proportional trailer braking as long as the unit is in use.


There's no need to worry about missing a call or running multiple apps either. The Echo Smart Control app will continue running in the background if you get a call or switch between apps, and it will not interfere with your vehicle's hands-free multimedia system.

Proportional Braking

With a proportional brake controller, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer brakes every time - proportional controllers are able to adapt to every braking situation differently. So, if you slam on the brakes in your truck, your trailer brakes will activate with that same extreme intensity. And if you merely slow down as you approach a red light, your trailer will gradually brake in the same manner.


Once the Echo is installed, it will sense - via an internal 3-axis accelerometer - how your tow vehicle brakes. This inertia-based sensor responds to the deceleration of your tow vehicle as you brake by signaling the controller to send out enough power to your trailer brakes so that they are activated with an intensity that matches. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

I used this kit to convert an OEM 4-way flat connector to a 7-way on a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Easy, straightforward install. Only issue I ran into was that I had to elongate the kit mounting bracket holes to use the existing bracket holes. etrailer provides excellent written and video installation instructions.

We purchased a new Hyundai Palisade that had an OEM hitch and “prewiring” for trailering. Unfortunately this prewiring was only a 4-pin connector so it did not include wiring for controlling electric trailer brakes. We finally convinced the dealer to install a 7-pin connector - if we obtained the appropriate parts from etrailer.com. George J. at etrailer.com recommended this kit (#ETBC7) as the parts we needed for conversion to a 7-pin connector. The car dealer’s service department installed the 7-pin connector while we waited for 5 hours. With a wireless brake controller, everything now works properly for towing our Casita. This photo shows the installation after I modified it so that the connector was above the hitch instead of below it (too close to the ground). I had to fashion a bracket for appropriate spacing and I left several bolts that attach it to the etrailer.com bracket (oops).

A GREAT product! I use this for a 20ft. Carson enclosed trailer I tow with a Tesla Model Y. This solved the whole issue of installing a brake controller in the Tesla, as it simply plugs into the trailer wiring connector and pairs with my iPhone. My phone app acts as the accelerometer and the screen is a big red button that applies the brake if you need to. But, the accelerometer braking is smooth and steady and worked perfectly right out of the box in just minutes! This also allows me to have brakes if I want to use another vehicle to tow with, I just plug it in to that vehicle. THANKS CURT & etrailer.com!

Overall thoughts can be summed up as, “Not overly wowed for the price.” For 1, the rubber strap was extremely cheap and broke the 1st use. This is an issue because the controller itself fits fairly loosely in ALL my receivers which is another issue as well. All 3 receivers are new and all 3 are name brands, 1 being Curt, so I can only conclude it’s the controller itself. For the price there is absolutely 0 reason Curt could not spring on a quality strap or assure a snug fit in at least their own receivers. If I had not been paranoid of it falling out to begin with and added extra bungies I would have lost $xxx controller 1/2 way to the destination. 2nd because it fits loosely it can lose connection periodically when going over a bump, sharp turn, and etc. You know those times when you might want to actually have a manual control? 3rd the manual override brake is finicky at best. It may or may not engage when hit the 1st time. It may or may not engage quickly. It may or may not engage at all. Lastly the blue tooth signal could be stronger. If not moving it does okay in the front seat of the burb but if I’m walking around the trailer or ect it loses the signal, which for me isn’t much of an issue but would certainly be if I was using in an RV since it will lose signal at around the 12ft mark. All in all I doubt I would repurchase it for the current price, vs going through the hassle of wiring in a designated controller to whichever vehicle I plan on towing it with. Couple that with the fact you MUST remove at every stop due to the design, or risk someone who actually knows what it is walking off with your $xxx controller. This is also something that could have been addressed rather cheaply for the price of the controller by something as simple as a metal loop and wire setup, but I was aware of this issue before purchase. The concept is nice, and it does broaden the options on who I could let tow my trailer if I needed to borrow a vehicle or etc if mine went down on the side of the road, and not everyone has the know how to wire their own controller so price could be negligible for them. Time will tell if it pays itself off for us, curt warranties it for life so it may very well pay itself off in time, but in my mind for most folks there are better and cheaper options. All I can say is do your research and weigh the cons and pros before you buy. Seems like a slightly below average functioning controller at the cost of considerably easier to install with multi vehicle use. Works okay for me, but I'm hauling a camper used a few times a year. I certainly wouldn't want to be someone who hauls regularly and constantly be connecting and disconnecting at all my stops. So as I said, it’s not junk but its also not the “wow” I expected from the reviews I read and price I paid.

. Also, the manual output can be activated by pressing and holding the orange button in the app. If you simply tap the button, it will not work properly. Make sure that you are holding down the button for as long as a duration you need.

2019 Buick Enclave

I like it. It works as advertised. My 2019 Buick Enclave was not prewired for a controller. I could not find the correct wires and the dealers could not provide a wiring diagram. They were charging more to install my 17 year existing brake controller than the Curt product cost. Some dealers would not install a used product. I just finished a six hour trip with a two horse trailer, problem free. It has a band to secure it, but there is a lot of weight bearing on the connections. I may design a way to help support it. I love the portability and convenience. I highly recommend this product.

It is potentially a good product but at this point, I will probably buy a hard wired unit. #1. It does not provide enough power to the trailer brakes. I have tested it against my hard wired truck. The truck can nearly lock the brakes manually applied, this unit, with my Ford Flex, will barely slow the car down at an idle roll. I don't know if the reason is that the Flex trailer connector is angled down. I can't change that. Fortunately, the trailer is under 2000# and has the optional brakes. #2. I use my phone for GPS also. That does not allow the use of the trailer emergency braking button, which in my case does virtually nothing.

I reached out to Curt about the experience with the brake controller. Since this is a proportional controller the controller senses when the car is slowing down and sends the appropriate signals. At idle or a slow roll – the Echo does not send out a strong signal to engage the brakes aggressively. It is designed to mimic how the vehicle is braking so if the vehicle is braking gently so will the trailer. Typically depending on the type of phone you are able to have the navigation in the background while using the Echo app. Of the Echo add is in the background then you will not have access to the emergency breaking button on the app.

Easy install and setup but would prefer in cab unit Big issue was it would lose its connection with phone when sitting unused and had to start over. Good news is it retains its last setting and function even with contact loss. I complained to Curt and they sent me a upgraded unit as mine was a first issue. They expect a better result but I have had an occasion to use it. I am not a big fan of smart phones and using it in a emergency stopping situation seems impractical for me.

I Actually like this better than the hard wired controller. It applies the brakes more evenly and proportionate to how hard the brake pedal is being pressed. Since I only transport one trailer at a time, I’ve unhooked the power to the hard wired controllers in all of my vehicles and use this solely. Great product and I’ll be buying another for aure

Have had a hard wired break controller in the past. It worked great. This one here works very good. I really like that it is universal from one vehicle to another. I use the option for multiple vehicle / trailer configurations for when my trailer is loaded or unloaded. The availability to switch from one tow vehicle to another and have the electric breaks work is a real plus. I went way to long with no trailer breaks before I had my previous hard wired unit installed on my previous vehicle. I really do like this new wireless unit (Don’t be afraid to work with the Bluetooth adjustments a bit to get it dialed in to near perfection)

BEWARE! Poor product design, and NO customer service help from CURT. The controller does have a safety strap, the ONLY method to secure it to the tow vehicle. BUT, the essential button fastener is not permanently attached, is very small, easy to lose, can't cost more than a few pennies to manufacture, and the strap is USELESS without it. Curt could at least include an extra fastener in the controller package. Having to purchase an entire strap to replace the fastener is very inconvenient and expensive for the consumer.

Product works completely as described. Easy to add a controller to ANY vehicle that has a 7 point trailer plug like my 2018 Chevy Silverado (no factory brake controller but has a prewired 7 and 4 point trailer plug) or my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Trailer is a 2 axle CargoMate. App was a bit hard to find on the AppStore (iphone). Search "Echo" not Curt then it comes up. Set up is quick and easy to modify if necessary with load changes. App does not need to be normally running if you don't need to apply brakes manually. But if you do need to apply brakes, the response is surprisingly fast through the Bluetooth communication. No delay whatsoever. It doesn't interfere with other apps running either. I like to use navigation and stream music from my iphone 8. Only real issue I have with the product is that its not lockable. Very easy for someone who knows what they are looking for to just unplug and run. I parked overnight at a hotel and didn't realize it until the next day. Got lucky that it didn't get stolen, but now I'm aware and take it off when done towing.

Terrific product! So far, it has worked flawlessly for me. So much easier to install than running wires through the cab to a manual controller on the dash. Plug, sync, and play. I bought an inexpensive, unlocked smartphone to install the app on. I've got it mounted in a cup holder in my center console. At that location, the controller is right at my fingertips.

I used this pulling a 9000 lb camper it worked great all you need to do is download the app plug it in and connect to it via Bluetooth. Even if you loose Bluetooth the brakes still work. The only draw back is you don’t have a button to apply brakes in the trailer only, I don’t remember if the app had that option

The Curt Echo brake works flawlessly, and their support is over the top. We had a problem with our original Echo - due primarily to the wiring adapter etrailer sent that was mis-wired - the connections to the flat blades were reversed. It did something to the brake controller, but when I called Curt Echo they not only sent a new one, but had me stay on the line while they tracked one down to make sure it was in stock, and confirm that it would be sent out ASAP. Later, when I finally got my travel trailer, I called and they walked me through the settings I should use for the Echo. The new models have a strap that attaches it securely to the 7 pin connector. My only option for my Telluride turned out to be the best option.

Great! Except for the cheesy strap that helps secure the unit. I use some sturdy small stretch straps and some velcro straps to secure it at all points so it doesnt wiggle and lose contact.

I like the easiness of this brake controller without having the wires unit screwed Into lower dash. After properly setting the sensitivity, the unit has worked well. I tried to submit a few photos, but the download was unsuccessful.

This works with my Genesis GV 80 with all it’s electronics but it needs more receiver stabilization in order to prevent it from dropping and rebooting the signal while driving . The rubber band attachment broke right away (button dropped off )and did not stabilize the receiver even before it broke.

Great technology. Works great. Sometimes it pulls loose from plug, so I wrapped a little electrical tape around it to hold it tighter in place. Other than that, it is the best device I have found. I've pulled my trailer over 10,000 miles using it.

Really like the simplicity of installation and easy transfer to various trailers. Only have one issue that the manual doesn't appear to address. The display show the brake is being applied in a small amount with no foot on the brakes.

It works reliably, but I did have some difficulty getting it set up. At speed it works smoothly, but at very low speed, when only going two or three miles per hour in a parking lot, the brakes come on rather suddenly and with some intensity.. This doesn't happen at normal driving speeds. I've been unable to adjust it so this doesn't happen. But the device works and saves me the hassle of wiring in a brake controller.

“All or nothing” the controller works and connects as described but doesn’t provide any gain control to adjust the sensitivity of the brakes. They are either 100% or zero. For clarity, the device provides both gain control and sentitivity they don’t appear to work with my vehicle (2015 RR sport) I called the manufacturer but they couldn’t trouble shoot a solution. Still, it’s better than nothing and under a heavy load it works well. When my trailer is empty (3000lbs ATC car hauler) it locks up the brakes when engaged.
