Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Replacement Trailer Hub Bearing

Today were going to review part number 2788. This is the Redline Trailer wheel bearing. This is the inner bearing. These replacement bearings are a high-quality tapered roller bearing designed for high speed use. All bearings have industry-standard numbers regardless of the brand. On this one, basically, if you look at the inner ring, etched on there is the number 2788.

Thats the part number for this bearing. Now, on the bearing you would need is if you would just get that part number off the inner ring and depending on the brand of your bearing, it could be a different part number. If youll just give us that part number, well be able to cross reference it to get you the correct bearing you would need. Now, if you do not have the part number off the bearing, the only other way to get the correct one is to measure the inside diameter of this inner ring right here on the bearing. To do that, you would need to use a digital caliper because it would read in thousandths of an inch, which that measurement would be.

A regular ruler or a tape measure would not give you the correct measurement. In this case, if we measure the inner diameter of this bearing, it would be 1.5 inches. Now, this bearing does consist of three pieces, the inner ring which is this part right here that slides over the spindle of your axle, the actual rollers themselves, and then the cage or the roller retainer that holds the rollers in place. The lubrication on the bearings is mainly from wheel bearing grease. Some bearings will use oil also.

Now, there is one other piece that is required with the bearing and that is the bearing race. Now, that is sold separately, but the bearing race would be the part that would install into the hub that would allow the bearing to ride, sit into, and bearings would ride on that race. The race you would need for this which is sold separately would be part number 2729. The important measurement on the race would be the outside diameter. For the race for this one, the outside diameter would be 3 inches even.

That should do it for review of part number 2788.

  • How Can I Identify an Axle Without a Sticker?
Thank you for the pictures! It looks like you've got some sort of square drop axle on your trailer and if you can't find an identifying sticker, I can still help you figure out what you've got so that you can make the swap to electric brakes on your trailer. It looks like you've got 6 bolts on the wheels, which can help narrow down our search, but we'll need to know what size the brakes on the trailer are and if possible, what size (or number) the inner and outer bearings are on the hubs. If...

  • Replacement Axle, Hubs, Brakes, and Tires for Older Trailer With Dexter 22834 Hub
Based on the axle and bearing measurements it looks like your trailer was using a Dexter 22834 hub. The Outer Bearing # 1779 has an ID of .938" and the Inner Bearing # 2788 has an ID of 1.50". The outer bearing is slightly off but that may be due to a measuring error. That would also mean you have 5,200 lb axles on the trailer. This is an obsolete assembly so you will need to replace the entire axle. For a replacement you can use the # e55SR. This will stick out an extra 3/4" on either...

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies and Hubs for 1960 Airstream Trailer
It sounds like your assemblies are not the typical assemblies and will need to be replaced. For your brake assemblies, I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting # AKEBRK-7-SA along with mounting hardware # BRKH12. If you don't have the brake flange compatible, you can use the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle # 4-44-1 which needs to be precisely welded in place. Then for your drum brake assemblies to match, I need some more information. I will need either the...

  • Solution for Replacement Hub on Mobile Home Axle
Mobile home axles typically don't use standard bearing combinations, or even standard bearings. They are also intended for one time use. The 1.5" ID you have means it could be a # 2788 or # 29749 bearing, neither of which are used in modern hubs. If you want to trade out the hub the only solution would be to replace the axle. Finding a replacement axle will require knowing the capacity as well as the hub face to hub face measurement. I'm guessing this is a homemade trailer so you will...

  • Finding a Hub for a Very Old Trailer with 6 Lug Bolt Pattern # 1779 inner and # 2788 Outer Bearings
I did some research and found that the 2,600 lb Hub, # 22834, takes the # 1779 outer bearing and # 2788 inner bearing and would use the # 29031 grease seal. This hub has a 6 bolt on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. This sounds like the hub you have, and replacement parts are available.
