There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.
The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.
If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.
Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.
Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.
The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.
On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)
To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)
Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

After years of hauling firewood my Harbor Freight Trailer Axle fatigued and cracked. The Dexter Axle from etrailer got me back on the trail. Welded leaf spring seats on the opposite side of the axle at a spacing of 46.5 inches. The wheels stick out an additional 3/4 inch per side. The trailer now rides like a Cadillac. Prompt delivery. Shipment was well protected from in transit damage.The axle fit my trailer perfectly and the u-bolts I ordered with the axle fit as they were supposed to. My wheels were old with a slightly larger bolt circle than the new hubs. Before I abrasive saw cut the old u-bolts, I tried the new hubs with the old wheels and they did not match up. I had to get new tire and wheels with the 4.5 bolt circle mounting holes. Not a big deal as I needed to replace the ties anyway. But testing the old wheels with the new hubs before cutting the the old u-bolts meant I didn't have downtime on the trailer while waiting for the new wheels and tires. The whole changeover, removing the old axle, installing the new axle, and mounting the tires took me about 3 hours at a leisurely pace.

I ordered my axle kit and received it 30 days later, I expected it in a week. The hubs, U-bolt kit, springs and grease were shipping in a box, when I receive it the heavy parts had smashed the grease tube, and was quite the mess in the box. The U-bolt kit I ordered as suggested by etrailer was the wrong kit and the bolts were short (their system did not suggest the right kit for the thicker springs). I see there is a kit I could have ordered with longer bolts. When I went to tighten the lug bolts on the new hub I received, one bolt started to pull through the hub. I reported the grease problem to etrailer, they could not care less, so I thought it would not be worth my time to report the other issues. I guess I will purchase new u-bolts, grease, and perhaps a hub somewhere else.

Product seems to be built well. I was missing a set of outer bearings that I had to get from a local tractor supply due to time constraints. They were missing when shipped to me. I ordered this axle as a replacement for the one on my 1996 Haulin' 4x8 utility trailer. I'd neglected to maintain the bearings and when one went it destroyed my axle. This axle was an exact fit but the spring seats needed to be moved to the top of the axle. I ordered new seats and U-bolt mounting kit as well as the axle. I found a welder to remove the original spring seats and weld the new ones to match my application. Installation was a snap, I just followed the video included on the web site. Ordering my parts from etrailer really saved me $$ over the quotes I'd received from local shops.

Quick delivery with tracking link! Great product and price!! Easy process to install axle and hubs. I would have appreciated a torque specification for the U-Bolts and Lug nuts in the video. I didn't take the time to search other locations or Q&A.
Tip: 1-1/2 " PVC makes a great tool to seat the grease seals. I used my 28MM socket, it was very close to size. I decided to use 2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe to install the E-Z Lube dust seal. I have many tools however no wooden hammers.

Really good solid axle... I needed the mounting tabs moved and had a metal fabricator do the work for $20.00. This was used on an old boat trailer that I turned into a utility trailer. Also swapped out the springs with ones purchased from etrailer too. To complete the package I ordered (3) 165/65-8 trailer tires. The trailer tows straight and hauls everything I've ever needed to.

Even though I have not yet had a chance to put all the parts together, they all appear to be well made. Shipping was fast. My only recommendation would be to not just “throw” some of the small parts (e.g. spring seats) loosely in the shipping box. I only received one of two spring seats, however, when I informed customer service of the discrepancy I received it shortly thereafter.

Though the mechanical quality of the axle/hubs is great, whatever the axle and hubs are painted with comes off very easily. Simply removing tape would pull the paint with it. This will eventually lead to these parts rusting and you'll need to add an additional coat of paint to prevent rust. The paint quality is very poor

I had a seemingly uncommon axel on my Haulmark 16', tandem axel, enclosed trailer. 95" with spring center of 82". Couldn't find these specs anywhere, so I ordered Dexter 95"with 80" spring center. Had a friend move the spring brackets to 82". Took him about an hour total. I installed new axel yesterday. Without ant assistance, I was able to install the new axel in about an hour. Perfect fit. Great price, panphenomenal and fast shipping.

I recently purchased a 1997 Pacific boat trailer, 2,000 lb capacity. Installed new lights, spare tire carrier, and tongue jack two months ago. Decided I may as well replace the wheel bearings and seals only to discover the spindles had deep gouges from the seals or material between the seal and spindle shaft. The right side (as viewed from the rear) even had a deep gouge in the seal area from who knows what. Surprisingly, the wheel bearings were fine.
My initial intention was to use what is called a "speed sleeve" to repair the seal contact area on the spindle, in addition to replacing the wheel bearings. The bearings were an odd size, thus somewhat expensive. Cheaper to replace the hubs but with the "speed sleeves", would come out to nearly $200, notwithstanding my labor.
To the rescue, etrailer! I measured my existing axle per the directions from the staff and ordered a replacement axle with hubs and a U-bolt kit for nearly the same price. Shipping was surprisingly fast given current events and a brand new axle and associated parts were delivered last night (8 April, 2020).
I've replaced wheel bearings before but have never replaced a trailer axle, so I was initially somewhat intimidated by the job. I jacked the trailer up to remove the wheels and used jack stands to ensure it would remain that way while I proceeded to remove the old axle.
The u-bolts (not quite a U given the square axle) were not too bad to remove. I used copious amounts of WD-40 on the threads and an adjustable wrench did the rest of the work. I was going to use an air ratchet but did not have enough clearance and did not wish to risk raising the trailer any further.
The old axle came out fine and was a bit heavy, around 50 lbs by my reckoning. Given the service life of 23 years, I'd say it did a good job (it was the original axle). Interestingly, the new axle weighed a good 10 - 15 lbs lighter...
The new axle went in fine, although due to the camber, which the original axle did not have, it took a bit of "squeezing" to get the holes on the spring seats. Nothing terrible, and my initial measurements were correct.
I did not take photos of the bearing and seal installation process as my hands had a fair amount of grease on them but if you follow the instructions, it is relatively simple. Make sure you "cup" the outer bearing area with grease in your palm to force it between the rollers. You will know when you have enough as it will be pushed between the rollers on the other side. Take a look at some [online] videos if you have never seen it done before. I believe there is a video on the etrailer website.
I used a short piece of 2x4 to install the seals and they went in without fanfare. I would recommend wiping a thin film of grease on the seal seating area of the hub prior to seal installation.
Installing the hubs was relatively straight forward, I seated the bearings while rotating the hubs to the recommended 50 ft/lbs. Then backed off WITHOUT rotating the hub, finger tightening, and installing the locking clips, which I have never seen before as I typically use cotter pins.
I installed the wheels and will be installing my "Bearing Buddies" later this afternoon.
All told, the job took me approximately 2 1/2 hours, maybe 3. I took my time and did my best to ensure it was a safe evolution given that the trailer had to be raised enough to allow axle replacement.
I will re-torque the u-bolts after some use and will probably re-seat the bearings as well. The price on the new bearings and seals is a significant improvement over what had come standard with the trailer.
Tools used were a 3/4" socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, 10" adjustable wrench, 1 1/2" socket and 1/2" drive torque wrench, 1/2" socket for the new u-bolts, a soft faced hammer to remove the "Bearing Buddies", (2) jack stands, and standard floor jack. Paper towels were most helpful during the bearing greasing and installation process...
If you have never done this before, like me, I can assure you it was relatively straight forward and I'm sitting here somewhat proud of myself...
