Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

Another helpful measurement to have is the flange-to-flange (C) length, which is measured from the outside of one brake flange to the outside of the one opposite. This length may be easy to obtain if you are replacing an axle, but it's important to note that this measurement is not the preferred method for determining which axle will best fit your trailer.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - T3584F-EZ-8974 Review

Today we're going to review part number T3584F-EZ-8974. This is the Dexter Trailer Axle with the EZ Lube spindles and a 3500 pound weight capacity. Now this axle beam will act as part of your trailer suspension system. This will be used to replace an axle on your trailer. It is made of a high strained steel construction. Now also, axles are built with a predetermined bend in the tube that will compensate for the expected deflection under load.

So if you look at this axle actually, in the very middle, I got it sitting in it's position, it will raise up in the middle, and there's actually room underneath there. So it has that predetermined bend, and basically that bend in the axle will help create a 0 camber angle for even road to tread contact across the width of your trailer's tires. This is best for straight line acceleration and steady controlled towing. Now this axle is also a high strained steel construction. It is an under slung design. Basically, the spring seats, the one right here, you can see that seat right here.

And then there's one on this end. They are welded to the underside of the axle for mounting your leash springs too. Now the leash springs we do sell separately. Basically, the under slung design will make a low ride height, which makes it easier to load, and unload your trailer. Now this axle has the straight EZ Lube spindles. There's no drop to it.

They have the built in grease zerk fittings on each end. Basically that will allow you to lubricate the bearings by putting a grease spin on that zerk fitting. The spindle nut, the nut retainer, and de-washer come also with this axle. The spring seats, the brake flanges, the four bolt break flanges, and the spindles are all welded on. The weight capacity on this is 3500 pounds. There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center lengths are your most accurate.

The hub face will refer to the length of the axle when it's measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle. So your hubs would have to mounted and you then you would measure from the base of the one wheel stud on your hub to the base of the other side. Now the spring center is the approximate width of your trailer. It's measured from the center of the spring seat on one side, to the center of the spring seat on the other side. So just to give you an idea on this axle, we'll first do the hub face to hub face measurement. Now I don't have the hubs on here but I'm going to give you a rough idea where they will be. So the hub face to hub face length for this axle would be 89 inches. Now the spring center to spring center length. We'll measure from the center to the center, is going to be 74 inches. Now there is a flange to flange length. Which is basically the brake flange to brake flange length. That's not as arcurate as the other ones. But it can be used if you're replacing an axle on your trailer. In this case it's 82 5/8 inches flange to flange length. Now the tubing outer diameter on this is 2 3/8 inches diameter, spindle size is 1 1/16 and again the brake flange is a four bolt design. Now one other note I wanted to mention to you, if you'll notice this sticker right over here, this white sticker. This is the manufacturer sticker. Now this will always face the rear of the trailer. So this axle when it's positioned, this will face the rear. So this would be the left side of the trailer, this would be the right side of the trailer. The reason I mention that is you'll notice there's two loops of wire, one here, one on that side. So the wiring on a trailer will usually come down this left side and you'll tie it into that wire there. So on the left side it will connect to the electric brakes and the wiring on the trailer and that wire runs through the axle and over here on the right side, the wiring will just connect to the brakes. That should do it for the review on part number T3584F-EZ-8974 the Dexter Trailer Axle with the EZ Lube Spindle and a 3500 pound weight capacity. .

Perfect fit, nice axle and fast delivery. I liked it so much I ordered another a day later to replace the front axle. My 30 yr old tandem trailer's axle broke at the wheel, so I went to a local store which doesn't stock them anymore. Could of ordered a so so axle for $94 + $28 shipping and wait 2 weeks but needed it fast. I went to a major trailer sales & service shop and told "maybe we could get one for $250" with no call back. I decided to check out etrailer and was surprised to see Dexter axles that fit my trailer for $140 with FREE shipping in 3-4 days! Ordered Sat. night, got it Wednesday afternoon, and installed it (with brakes) in an hour. Only problem I had was determining if spindles would fit my hubs. They stated "1/16th spindle" and must be industry talk but french to me. So I had to look up bearing #'s they listed to check bearing sizes to make sure they fit my hubs. A little more time but not a deal breaker. The best part was the huge difference in ride with just one new axle. Always had bouncing loaded or not, but now with just one axle the ride is smoother no load and with my 4000 lb tractor on it. Can't wait to get the 2nd axle on that arrived today. First two pics show the difference between the old straight axle and the new dexter axle. The third is a pic of my 2nd axle, oh well. Etrailer is my new go to place for trailer parts. I have 7 trailers. 661643

Personal service was great. Received a call regarding an address issue; person from etrailer wanted to make sure address was correct prior to shipping. This ensured order received without delay. Axels are a perfect fit; on-line videos for installation are very helpful. All your videos are well done; informative and helpful. Prices were better than any local suppliers in the area. I still trade with local businesses, but for large purchases I go to etrailer. The seal puller is a must have tool, works great!! 609618

Service really doesn’t exist anymore, however these guys are good. The trailer company wanted to charge me over 1K! Watching the videos and talking to the guys I got the confidence to do it on my own. Super easy! I’m back hauling construction debris. Oh, and I will never haul 8 yards of top soil ever again! 484221

Comments

Given that a yard of topsoil weighs around a ton 2000 lbs, loading 8 yards onto a 3500 lb capacity axle probably wont end very well!

Do you have a question about this Trailer Axle?

  • How To Choose Correct 3,500 Lb Axle for Slipper Spring Setup
  • In order to determine which axle is correct for your trailer we need to find out what your hub face (HF) and spring center (SC) measurements are. If you take a look at the photo I have attached for you that should then help with obtaining the above two measurements. The most important thing we need to look for is the hub face as the spring center can then be moved (within a range) if we need to. I have attached a list of the 3,500 lb axles we offer in the varying hub face and spring center...

  • 89 inch Trailer Axle Recommendation for Trailer without Hubs
  • We have a few options for an 89 inch long hub face to hub face axle with 74 inches for spring seats. For that you'd want the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 for a 3,500 lb axle, part # 8327830 for a 6,000 lb axle, or # 8327820 for a 5,200 lb axle.

  • Replacing the Axle on a Gooseneck Horse Trailer
  • An axle flip kit like part # K71-384-00 will raise the trailer the diameter of the axle plus the height of the leaf spring pack. I do have options for you but rotating the axle to where the bend faces the other direction is not one of them. The bend in the axle will actually straighten out once a load is placed on the trailer and if this was reversed, the axle would lose capacity. Now from this point forward you have two options both of which entail replacing the axle. Since your current...

We also have axles that comes with hubs and electric drum brakes too, such as Dexter kit # 35545E-ST-EZ-89. You can see all axle kits on the page I linked for you. These hubs will work well on the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles - 89" Long - 3,500 lbs # T3584F-EZ-8974. • Is there a Replacement Dexter Axle that Fits in Place of a 3,500 Pound Lippert Axle
  • Is your axle actually bent or are you just seeing the bow that is supposed to be in the axle? A beam style trailer axle has a bow in it so the center of the axle is higher than either of the ends. When weight is on the axle it straightens out. This is part of how it gets its capacity. So if that is what you are seeing it is normal. If it is bent from damage or was overloaded then you would definitely want to replace the axle. To find the correct replacement there are some measurements...

  • Of the axles that we carry the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 that you referenced would be the closest one we carry to what you would need. The spring center measurement is the same at 74 inches. The issues is that this axle measures 89 inches from hub face to hub face so it would be 2 inches shorter than what you currently have. If the wheels and tires could be an inch closer to the frame on your trailer on either side without causing interference this axle would work well for you. Otherwise...

Dexter Axle # T3584F-8974 is a 3500 lb capacity axle with a hub face to hub face dimension of 89 inches and a spring seat center to center measurement of 74 inches. This isn't the exact spring center dimension you were looking for, but it would be very easy to grind off the old seats and weld replacements like # TRSS238 into place. • Spring Seat Recommendation for Dexter 5k Axle
  • Dexter axles like your 10k axles have a bow to them that "opens" down so that when a load is put on the trailer the axle is more or less totally flat. You can't flip the axles over as that would make the bow face the wrong direction and your wheel camber would be terrible. You can just install new spring seats on the side you need like you mentioned. For a spring seat for a 5 inch axle like what you have you'd want the part # 3-66.

The reason for this is because the axle will flatten out when it is under a load. • If ground clearance is your primary concern I have a great solution for you. Instead of a standard axle like the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 that you referenced you would want a Timbren Axle-Less system like the part # ASR35HDS02. This setup has the same capacity as the axle you referenced, does not have an axle that runs under the trailer, has a 4 inch lift built into it, and has wider clearances for larger off-road tires. For a hub for this setup you would want the part # 42655UC1.

  • Will Changing Travel Trailer Axle Increase the Trailers Overall Weight Capacity
  • We do offer axle beams alone and also complete axle kits that include hub/drums, brakes etc. All can be viewed by clicking on the included link. I also was unable to find a cross-reference for your axle number 4330537. This may be a production code rather than a part number. You can certainly change out your axle to a higher-rated part, such as the 3500-lb-rated Dexter part # T3584F-EZ-8974, but this will NOT necessarily increase your trailer's capacity. The trailer's frame design and...

  • 3,500 lbs. Axle with Hydraulic Drum Brakes Kit
  • I have a solution for you but unfortunately we do not carry any axles that come with hydraulic brakes. What you will need to do is buy the parts separately, but I have all the parts you will need. First, for an axle, you will need the Dexter Axle Beam with EZ Lube Spindles # T3584F-EZ-8974. This axle is 89" long with a weight capacity of 3,500 lbs. which is the same as the # 35545E-ST-EZ-89 Dexter Axle you were looking at. For your Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assemblies you will want...

  • Recommended Replacement 3,500 lb Axle for Carson Trailer with 88" Hub-Face and 74" Spring-Center
  • We do have a replacement 3,500 lb axle for your Carlson trailer as well as hubs that fit your description. The axles that we carry have an 89" hub-face and 74" spring-center measurements so since the hub-face dimensions are only 1" off of what you measured these will work well for your application. I'm pretty sure that your axle has the 89" hub-face measurement as that is extremely common (and measuring the hub-face is a little difficult) but even if our axle hub-face is 1" wider there...

  • Can I Use Two Different Length Axles on a Trailer
  • There will most likely be issues associated with using two different length trailer axles together therefore I recommend you replace the older one with the same dimensions as the one you just had installed. If you were to leave the different length axles on the trailer you could have issues with tracking as well as irregular tire wear patterns. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the use of wheel spacers as these place too much stress on the lug studs. In order to make sure you get the...

  • How To Convert A Torsion Axle To An Axle-Less Or Straight Axle System
  • I do have a few options available for you however, we currently do not sell torsion axles. You have two options to consider for your trailer, the Timbren axle-less suspension and the Dexter straight axles. As you have a gross trailer weight (GTW) of 3,000 lbs. I recommend using a 3,500 lb setup. The Timbren System will provide you with a much easier method for converting from torsion springs in addition to containing fewer components. I recommend the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension...

  • How Can You Determine Axle Load Capacity on a Dexter Axle
  • I reached out to my contact at Dexter and based on your serial number, they can't really narrow it down. It is an older axle that was produced in a plant that has since been closed. All they can tell me is that it is between 2K and 8K capacity because it came from that plant. Do you have a GVWR sticker on your trailer? Does it have brakes if so are they 10 inch or 12? We can get really close with this info if not confirm load rating. Another way to narrow it down is with spindle...

  • Replacement Trailer Axle With 89 Inch Hub Flange To Hub Flange Measurement
  • In order to replace your trailer axle you can use the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles part # T3584F-EZ-8974 for a 3,500 lb capacity, part # 8327820 for a 5,200 lb weight capacity, or part # 8327830 for a 6,000 lb weight capacity. These axles all have the correct hub face measurement but you will need to have the spring seats moved to match that of those on your trailer. Based on the measurements that you provided of your stud centers, you have a 5 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern....

  • Is Special Axle Needed for Mounting Under Leaf Springs?
  • The Dexter Trailer Axle Beam # T3584F-EZ-8974 you referenced is an underslung design and you would need an overslung axle, though there is still a way for you to use an underslung axle. I assume you used an over/under conversion kit such as # K71-384-00 to move your leaf springs to the top of your axle. If so, you could still use those U-bolts and Spring Seat for Typical 3,500-lb, Round Trailer Axles with 2-3/8" Diameter # TRSS238 to place this axle on top of your leaf spring. Or, as...

  • Replacement 3500 Pound Axle for Basstracker V17 Boat Trailer
  • The closest axle we have to fit your measurements is the Dexter Axle # T3584F-EZ-8974. This has a hub face of 89 inches, spring center of 74 inches, 3500 pound capacity and EZ-Lube Spindles. It is not a drop axle like yours is currently. To gain the drop you can use the Timbren Axle-Less System with 4 inch Drop # ASR3500S04. The axle-less systems provide a suspension without the traditional cross tube axle.

  • Measuring to Find a Replacement Axle for a 1994 Jayco 1207 Tent Trailer
  • To determine if we have an axle that will fit your trailer I will need a little more information. Take a look at the pictures I have included that show where to measure on your existing axle. I would also need to know the gross trailer weight capacity rating of the trailer. I found a figure stating that the trailer weighs 1,755 pounds but does not indicate if that is the dry weight or the gross weight. I believe it is the dry weight. If none of the axles match the exact measurements...

  • Replacement Trailer Axle Recommendation for an EZ Loader Boat Trailer
  • You will need to measure your axles first though. The axles we offer are 89 inches from hub face to hub face and 74 inches from spring center to spring center. If your axles match these dimensions the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 would be a great choice for a hubless axle. If you wanted an axle that came with hub/drums that have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the # 35545E-ST-EZ-89. If you need axles with different dimensions you will need to check with your local trailer...

  • Replacement Axle for a 1994 Jayco Eagle 8 with Dexter Axle
  • It sounds like you will need a 2,000 pound axle. We do not carry the torsion straight axles though. We do have axle-less systems that work the same as torsion axles. I have included a link to them for you to view. The great thing about the axle-less systems, besides the better ground clearance, is that you don't have to have a specific axle length and in your case you would not have to add suspension components like you likely would if you went to a straight axle.

  • 89 inch Trailer Axle, 5 on 5 inch Bolt Pattern Hub and Leaf Spring Recommendation
  • To get a 89 inch long axle you would want the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 for an axle that does not come with hubs and then for hubs you would want the part # 84556UC3 for a brake hub with a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern or for an idler hub # 84550BX. Since this is a 3,500 lb axle you would want the same rated leaf springs. The # SP-212275 is a 3,500 lb spring that would work well for you. For a tandem axle hanger kit you would want the part # APT3 and for a u-bolt kit you would want the # APUBR-1.

  • How Much of a Spindle Shaft Needs to Be Inside the Axle Beam
  • The more of the spindle shaft you can get in an axle beam the better. There isn't really a minimum distance that I could determine for a stub such as # SP204BT8 but you have to consider several factors like the weight capacity of the axle and where the wheels will be relative to the trailer frame for the spindle position. Basically, I recommend having the whole spindle shaft in the axle beam because that is how pre-fabricated axles come such as # T3584F-EZ-8974 for example.
