Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

Another helpful measurement to have is the flange-to-flange (C) length, which is measured from the outside of one brake flange to the outside of the one opposite. This length may be easy to obtain if you are replacing an axle, but it's important to note that this measurement is not the preferred method for determining which axle will best fit your trailer.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - T3584F-EZ-8974 Review

Today we're going to review part number T3584F-EZ-8974. This is the Dexter Trailer Axle with the EZ Lube spindles and a 3500 pound weight capacity. Now this axle beam will act as part of your trailer suspension system. This will be used to replace an axle on your trailer. It is made of a high strained steel construction. Now also, axles are built with a predetermined bend in the tube that will compensate for the expected deflection under load.

So if you look at this axle actually, in the very middle, I got it sitting in it's position, it will raise up in the middle, and there's actually room underneath there. So it has that predetermined bend, and basically that bend in the axle will help create a 0 camber angle for even road to tread contact across the width of your trailer's tires. This is best for straight line acceleration and steady controlled towing. Now this axle is also a high strained steel construction. It is an under slung design. Basically, the spring seats, the one right here, you can see that seat right here.

And then there's one on this end. They are welded to the underside of the axle for mounting your leash springs too. Now the leash springs we do sell separately. Basically, the under slung design will make a low ride height, which makes it easier to load, and unload your trailer. Now this axle has the straight EZ Lube spindles. There's no drop to it.

They have the built in grease zerk fittings on each end. Basically that will allow you to lubricate the bearings by putting a grease spin on that zerk fitting. The spindle nut, the nut retainer, and de-washer come also with this axle. The spring seats, the brake flanges, the four bolt break flanges, and the spindles are all welded on. The weight capacity on this is 3500 pounds. There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center lengths are your most accurate.

The hub face will refer to the length of the axle when it's measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle. So your hubs would have to mounted and you then you would measure from the base of the one wheel stud on your hub to the base of the other side. Now the spring center is the approximate width of your trailer. It's measured from the center of the spring seat on one side, to the center of the spring seat on the other side. So just to give you an idea on this axle, we'll first do the hub face to hub face measurement. Now I don't have the hubs on here but I'm going to give you a rough idea where they will be. So the hub face to hub face length for this axle would be 89 inches. Now the spring center to spring center length. We'll measure from the center to the center, is going to be 74 inches. Now there is a flange to flange length. Which is basically the brake flange to brake flange length. That's not as arcurate as the other ones. But it can be used if you're replacing an axle on your trailer. In this case it's 82 5/8 inches flange to flange length. Now the tubing outer diameter on this is 2 3/8 inches diameter, spindle size is 1 1/16 and again the brake flange is a four bolt design. Now one other note I wanted to mention to you, if you'll notice this sticker right over here, this white sticker. This is the manufacturer sticker. Now this will always face the rear of the trailer. So this axle when it's positioned, this will face the rear. So this would be the left side of the trailer, this would be the right side of the trailer. The reason I mention that is you'll notice there's two loops of wire, one here, one on that side. So the wiring on a trailer will usually come down this left side and you'll tie it into that wire there. So on the left side it will connect to the electric brakes and the wiring on the trailer and that wire runs through the axle and over here on the right side, the wiring will just connect to the brakes. That should do it for the review on part number T3584F-EZ-8974 the Dexter Trailer Axle with the EZ Lube Spindle and a 3500 pound weight capacity. .

Perfect fit, nice axle and fast delivery. I liked it so much I ordered another a day later to replace the front axle. My 30 yr old tandem trailer's axle broke at the wheel, so I went to a local store which doesn't stock them anymore. Could of ordered a so so axle for $94 + $28 shipping and wait 2 weeks but needed it fast. I went to a major trailer sales & service shop and told "maybe we could get one for $250" with no call back. I decided to check out etrailer and was surprised to see Dexter axles that fit my trailer for $140 with FREE shipping in 3-4 days! Ordered Sat. night, got it Wednesday afternoon, and installed it (with brakes) in an hour. Only problem I had was determining if spindles would fit my hubs. They stated "1/16th spindle" and must be industry talk but french to me. So I had to look up bearing #'s they listed to check bearing sizes to make sure they fit my hubs. A little more time but not a deal breaker. The best part was the huge difference in ride with just one new axle. Always had bouncing loaded or not, but now with just one axle the ride is smoother no load and with my 4000 lb tractor on it. Can't wait to get the 2nd axle on that arrived today. First two pics show the difference between the old straight axle and the new dexter axle. The third is a pic of my 2nd axle, oh well. Etrailer is my new go to place for trailer parts. I have 7 trailers. 661643

Axels are a perfect fit; on-line videos for installation are very helpful. All your videos are well done; informative and helpful. Prices were better than any local suppliers in the area. I still trade with local businesses, but for large purchases I go to etrailer. The seal puller is a must have tool, works great!! 609618

  • Replacing the Axle on a Gooseneck Horse Trailer
An axle flip kit like part # K71-384-00 will raise the trailer the diameter of the axle plus the height of the leaf spring pack. I do have options for you but rotating the axle to where the bend faces the other direction is not one of them. The bend in the axle will actually straighten out once a load is placed on the trailer and if this was reversed, the axle would lose capacity. Now from this point forward you have two options both of which entail replacing the axle. Since your current...

  • Recommended Replacement 3,500 lb Axle for Carson Trailer with 88" Hub-Face and 74" Spring-Center
We do have a replacement 3,500 lb axle for your Carlson trailer as well as hubs that fit your description. The axles that we carry have an 89" hub-face and 74" spring-center measurements so since the hub-face dimensions are only 1" off of what you measured these will work well for your application. I'm pretty sure that your axle has the 89" hub-face measurement as that is extremely common (and measuring the hub-face is a little difficult) but even if our axle hub-face is 1" wider there...

  • Is there a Replacement Dexter Axle that Fits in Place of a 3,500 Pound Lippert Axle
Is your axle actually bent or are you just seeing the bow that is supposed to be in the axle? A beam style trailer axle has a bow in it so the center of the axle is higher than either of the ends. When weight is on the axle it straightens out. This is part of how it gets its capacity. So if that is what you are seeing it is normal. If it is bent from damage or was overloaded then you would definitely want to replace the axle. To find the correct replacement there are some measurements...

The Dexter Trailer Axle Beam # T3584F-EZ-8974 you referenced is an underslung design and you would need an overslung axle, though there is still a way for you to use an underslung axle. I assume you used an over/under conversion kit such as # K71-384-00 to move your leaf springs to the top of your axle. If so, you could still use those U-bolts and Spring Seat for Typical 3,500-lb, Round Trailer Axles with 2-3/8" Diameter # TRSS238 to place this axle on top of your leaf spring. Or, as...

Of the axles that we carry the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 that you referenced would be the closest one we carry to what you would need. The spring center measurement is the same at 74 inches. The issues is that this axle measures 89 inches from hub face to hub face so it would be 2 inches shorter than what you currently have. I have included a link to them for you to view.
