Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

Another helpful measurement to have is the flange-to-flange (C) length, which is measured from the outside of one brake flange to the outside of the one opposite. This length may be easy to obtain if you are replacing an axle, but it's important to note that this measurement is not the preferred method for determining which axle will best fit your trailer.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - T3584F-8974 Review

Today we are going to review part #T3584F-8974. This is the Dexter trailer axle beam with the standard spindles. This is 89" long, has a 3,500 pound weight capacity. Now this axle beam will act as part of your trailer suspension system. You can use it to replace an axle on your trailer and you can also use it to fabricate a suspension to fit your application. It is made of high strength steel construction. The other nice thing you might notice on axles, they will have a rise in the center of the axle.

It is hard to see on this video, but basically it will rise in the center and then go down. The reason they do that is to ensure the proper camber angle. In other words, this will ensure that the angle of the wheels on your trailer are correct for your towing needs. Basically this bend being higher, what will happen is when you put a load on the trailer and it weighs down on it, it will actually straighten that axle out some and then it allows your tires to have even road to tread contact across the width of the tires. This is good for straight line acceleration and steady control towing. You also notice the spring seats.

There is one on this end and one all the way down here on this end. Basically, those are welded to the underside of the axle. This is for mounting your leaf 00:01:13 springs to. The under slung design is nice because it gives you the low ride height and that makes it easier to load and unload your trailer. If you notice the spindles. They are a straight spindle.

There is no drop to them. They are a standard grease application. It does include the castle nut, the D washer and the cotter pin. We ship them with that all included. When we do ship them, they are protected. They don't ship them just like this bare.

What they will do is put grease over it to protect it and then they will bubble wrap over that, and then they will have the corrugated tube that will go over that and be wrapped around it so it protects it from getting damaged during shipping. The spring seats down here. The brake flange is right here. The spindles are all welded on. Also if you will notice, there is wiring right here. At this end is a loop of wire and one down at that end. That is basically the wiring that goes through the axle. That is used for your electric brake hook up. The weight capacity on this axle is 3,500 pounds. The tubing outer diameter right here is 2-3/8". The spindle size diameter is 1-1/6". If you notice, I did mention that it has the 4 bolt brake flange for connecting your brakes to. Also, there are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam. Basically, the two most accurate ways are going to be hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center. The hub face to hub face is when you have your hubs mounted on each end. You will measure from the base of one wheel stud on one hub, go all the way to the other side and measure to the base of the wheel stud on that opposite side of the axle. This axle, I do not have any hubs mounted on, but just to try and give you an idea. We're going to run this ruler where it is roughly going to be about 89" is where your hubs would run hub face to hub face. The other measurement would be the spring center to spring center length. On this one you can measure because the spring seats are welded to the axle. Basically, you measure from the center of this spring seat all the way to the center of the one on the other end. Actually this measurement will also give you the approximate width of your trailer. So basically you can see when we do center to center, right at 74". If you are replacing your trailers' axle, you should be able to figure out which type axle you need by determining the trailers' capacity, the bold pattern of the wheels that goes on the axle, the brake type and then the two measurements I mentioned, the hub face and spring center lengths. That should do it for the review on part # T3584F-8974. This is the Dexter trailer axle beam with the standard spindles. It is 89" long and has a 3,500 pound weight capacity. .

  • Recommendation For Spindle With Biggest Capacity That Fits Dexter Hub Assembly - Item # 8-214-5UC1
  • The biggest spindle we have in stock is a 3,500-lb axle like the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles, Item # T3584F-8974. Unfortunately we do not carry a spindle that is compatible with the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly, Item # 8-214-5UC1. This hub works with 10,000-lb capacity axles. You would need to source that elsewhere with an axle shop/company that carries the larger capacity axles.
