    • Low ride height makes it easier to load and unload your trailer

Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam Installation

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Dexter Axle Trailer Idler Axle Beam with the EZ-Lube Spindle at 60 inches long, offering a 2,200 pound capacity. It's part number is T20BTR-EZ-6048.Now to verify that this is going to be the appropriate axle replacement for you there are two measurements that you want to get. The first they call spring center, so that's gonna be from the center of the spring on this side, to the center of the spring on the other side. This axle offers a 48 inch what they call spring center to spring center measurement, so you want to make sure that yours matches that. The second is gonna be the hub face to the hub face, so you want to get this measurement while the hubs are still on the axle. You're gonna measure from the flat spot where your rim makes contact with the hub to that same spot on the opposite side.

What we're looking for is 60 inches. Now to install the spring on your axle we're gonna use U-Bolts to connect it, so our spring is gonna fit around the underside. We'll have a plate to go underneath and two U-Bolts to hold it, now we recommend using a new U-Bolt kit. The larger hole in the middle is gonna accept that small tab that sticks off there. The top portion of the bolt fits right into the bottom, spring perch there, bring that through, then we'll just take the provided nuts, we'll snug these down once we have our axle in position and we know that it's hanging the way that we want it.Now we can get our axle put up in position once we have that done on each end. You'll see here on the backside is gonna be the area the slipper portion will slide into and then we'll rotate it up into position and we'll use our bolt here in the front.

So we just want to rotate that up into position, once we align our hole we can slide through our bolt. You can see that's gonna fit right through that bracket up here on the spring eye. It'll go through our bracket, through the spring eye, come out on the inside. Just want to keep in mind you do want a little bit of movement, you don't want to squeeze that bracket down so tight that it's pulled against the side of the springs. You want those to be able to move a little bit.Now on the backside of the bolt right there at the head you'll see those lines that are on it.

Those are designed to engage the bracket and keep our bolt from turning, so you don't want to turn the bolt side. We're gonna tighten this down using the nut side only. Now once the spring eye bolts are in place you want to kind of tap you axle and make sure that your U-Bolts are sitting straight up and down and we'll start to tighten these down evenly. Now we're gonna go to each one and we're gonna begin to torque them down. Now typically what you're looking for is torque to yield, is what they call it, so we're gonna torque these just until we see our plate start to deform just slightly. That'll give us the proper tension on those U-Bolts so we won't have to worry about them backing off. That's gonna complete our installation of Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with the EZ-Lube Spindles, part number is T20BTR-EZ-6048..

I rarely write reviews or respond to requests to review purchases but in this case I feel I must. The items I purchased to repair my very old and nearly defunct boat trailer were just exactly what was needed. Not only did everything fit perfectly but the price was unbeatable!! I would definitely purchase here again. Thank you for great quality products at a very reasonable price. 304382

Dexter Axle is a direct drop in replacement for a bent one. Arrived quickly and had protectors on the ends. Old hubs fit nicely but order at least inside bearing seals it is important for the ez lube to work well they not leak. and you'll need to remove them to repack the inside bearings anyways. 151202

Do you have a question about this Trailer Axle?

  • Parts Needed to Install 2,000 Pound Round Axle Under Leaf Springs
  • In order to mount the round 2,000 pound axle under your trailer's leaf springs, we will need to piece together an over-under kit for the 1-3/4 inch outer diameter of the axle. The Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kits that you referenced are made for axles with a 2-3/8 inch round axle # K71-384-00 or 3 inch round axle # K71-385-00. The Dexter 2,200 pound straight axles have a 1-3/4 inch outer diameter. I have attached a link to all of the 2,000 pound axles we offer. To mount...

If you are looking for an axle that length with a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, then you will need to use the Timbren Axle-Less System # ASR1THDS02. This will allow you the custom length when utilizing a 2 inch square bar (not included) cut to length in the integrated holes of...

  • Replacement Trailer Axle for a Carry On 5x8 Foot Utility Trailer
  • We may not have a straight axle solution but we do have axle-less options. I have included a link to them for you. The great thing about these systems is that they have the suspension built in, sort of like a torsion axle. And ground clearance is improved because there is no axle hanging down. We carry the most common sizes of straight axles in the lower capacities but axles can literally be any size so its tough to carry them all. If none of the straight axles we have will fit and you...

  • Can Electric Brakes Be Added to Dexter 2,200lb Capacity Idler Axle
  • Brake mounting flanges like part # 4-34 could be welded to the axle you referenced. The spindles are compatible with the L44649 wheel bearings. If you needed a hub with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, use the # 8-173-16UC3-EZ hub drum and the # 23-47 and # 23-48 brake assemblies. You'd also need 4 nuts # 6-17 and # 5-8 lock washers per brake assembly. If you needed a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, go with the # 8-257-5UC3-EZ hub drum along with the brake assemblies and hardware mentioned above.

  • Can the Dexter Trailer Axles # T20BTR-EZ-6048 have the Spring Seats Moved to Top of Axle
  • We don't sell the Dexter Trailer Axles # T20BTR-EZ-6048 with the spring seat on top of the axle so that it could be installed overslung. But, what you can do is get the # TRSS175 and then have a qualified welder install this spring seat on the top of the axle so that you could install it in the configuration you need to.

  • Converting a Mobile Home Axle to 5 on 4.5 Pattern
  • I have a possible solution for you but, mobile home axles are typically very difficult to change over because the manufacturer uses odd sized parts to assemble them. Once they go bad its more trouble than its worth to replace specific items, especially the spindles. It is difficult to find replacement parts for a mobile home axle because they were designed for one time use only. Unfortunately, there isn't a kit for something like this. I recommend getting a new standard trailer axle...

  • Can E-Z Lube Hubs be Installed on Trailer Axle Without E-Z Lube Fittings
  • E-Z Lube hubs like # 84550UC1-EZ that you referenced are intended for use on axles that are equipped with E-Z Lube spindles. They feature removable plugs that pop out to provide access to the grease zerk fitting in the end of the spindle. Adding an E-Z Lube hub to a regular axle will not provide the E-Z Lube functionality but if the bearing set is the same as your original hubs then they may be used as substitutes but without the E-Z Lube feature. The idler hubs you referenced use bearings...

  • Recommendation on a 2,000 Lbs EZ Lube Axle Configuration for a Trailer
  • I have a solution for you for a trailer axle that will give you the EZ Lube spindle feature. Instead of the traditional tube axle, I recommend you look at on of the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension Systems, like # A20RS545. The Axle-Less system will mount to trailers frame and this system can be used in a tandem axles setup is desired. Timbren does not recommend using this system in a triple axle configuration. • Requirements for Replacing an Axle on a 5X8 Haulmark Utility Trailer
  • To get you a replacement axle compatible with your trailer, you can use a universal fit axle-less system like the Timbren # A35RS545E which comes ready to mount to your trailer frame and has the brakes, hubs, EZ-Lube spindles and suspension all integrated. You simply need to add a 2 inch square bar between the assemblies (not included) cut to the custom length needed. You simply need to know the capacity desired, so I've linked the page to all your options. If you want to replace your...

  • The 2,200 lb capacity Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles # T20BTR-EZ-6048 is not compatible with the hub and brakes you referenced, so it will require a couple of different parts, though you can use Brake Mounting Flange # 4-34. The axle has BTR spindles so you would need Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2,200-lb E-Z Lube Axles # 8-173-16UC3-EZ which are compatible with 7" x 1-1/4" brake assemblies.
