Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - 8327864

Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at Today we're taking a look at the Dexter trailer axle beam with E-Z Lube spindles. Now, this is going to be a heavy-duty axle with a 7,000 pound weight capacity. It measures 94" in length if we go from the hub-face-to-hub-face. Now, this does not come with the hubs.

You can purchase those separately. If you want to go by a different measurement though, if we go from our spring seat, which is this portion mounted here or welded on there. From the center of that spring seat to the same spot on the other side, that's going to give us 79" of length. Then on the ends if we take off the cover, it comes with these in transit just to make sure that everything stays relatively rust free. You can see that grease zerk on the end.

That's going to be where we'll do our maintenance to make sure that those axles have a good coating of grease inside there, that the bearings stay packed full of grease so that everything is rolling as it should. Now, of course, whenever you first install this, you want to make sure that you pack those bearings by hand to make sure that you get all the grease in all those little cracks and crevices and everything is working properly. But whenever you're just going to touch up that grease, top it off, you can use that grease zerk on the end to make it a lot easier than having to take the whole thing off to do that maintenance. It comes with the D washer, the nut and keeper to get that secured in place. You also notice we'll have our brake flange bolts here who have a five-bolt pattern. That spring seat is going to be an underslung design, so that means that it's mounted to the bottom of our axle and that's where our leaf springs will be attached for the rest of our suspension components. Now, the advantage to having an underslung design as opposed to the other way where our axle would be on top, this is going to give us a little lower height for our trailer which whenever we're loading and unloading things can make it a little bit easier.

If you think of it like your trailer, if it's up pretty high and you've got ramps on the back end, that means that they're going to be sitting at a pretty steep angle. But if we bring that trailer down, now our ramp is at a lower angle as well so it makes rolling things up onto that trailer that much easier. That's the big advantage there. You might notice that there's a slight bend to the axle. That's there on purpose.

That's going to give us a zero camber, so that means that our wheels are going to be sitting perpendicular with the ground. There's no angle in or out. We'll have good straight-line acceleration with our trailer and that also is going to keep our tire wear even across the width of that tire. This is made of a sturdy steel construction with a black powder coat finish. Our spring seats, brake flanges and spindles are all welded in place. This is going to, again, have that weight capacity of 7,000 pounds. Our tubing diameter is going to be 3". The bearings that you will need for this are sold separately. For the inner bearing you'll want to pick up the 25580 and the outer bearing number will be 14125A. This does come with a limited five-year warranty and it is made in the USA. But that's going to do it for our look at the Dexter trailer axle beam with E-Z Lube spindles.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Axle?

  • Can I Upgrade from 6 Lug to 8 Lug Wheels to Help Increase Weight Rating of my Trailer?
  • Because the total weight capacity of your trailer is limited by the lowest rated component, your axle capacity won't be increased by adding hubs with more lug nuts to the equation-even if they are rated higher than the axle. Moving to 8-lug hubs sounds like you want to move from 5,200-lb axles up to 7000-lb axles. If this is the case, then we have a few options for you listed below; I've also linked below all of the 7000-lb axles we currently have available. Best Upgrade: Timbren Axle-Less...

  • We do offer 7K-rated beam axles in the 94-inch hub-face-to-hub-face length you mention, shown on the linked page, and these have their spring seats spaced apart on center at either a 78-1/4-inch or 79-inch dimension. Since we do not produce these axles ourselves we cannot make one for you with different spacing but you can have a local trailer/welding shop install new spring seats at the specific 70-inch spacing you need.
