Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - 8327864-EB

Ellen: Hey everyone, I'm Ellen here at Today, we're taking a look at the Dexter trailer axle, with electric brakes and easy lube spindles. Now, this is going to give us a heavy duty axle to either replace our existing axle on our trailer, or help us to fabricate a new suspension system to fit our application. The axle is going to be rated for 7,000 pounds. It's going to have a total length of 94 inches. That's measuring from hub face to hub face, or if you want to measure from spring center to spring center, it's going to be about 79 inches. So, this is an underslung design; that means that our spring seat is going to be mounted on the bottom of the axle itself. That helps to drop our axle down, and that gives us a little bit better time whenever we go to load up any kind of equipment on our trailer.Since if you think about it, if our trailer is sitting up pretty high and we have ramps in the back, they're going to be at a steeper angle.

If we drop that down, it helps to make that angle for our ramps more gradual, more gentle, and it makes rolling things up onto that trailer a little bit easier. So, that's the advantage with that there. You might notice that there's a little bit of a bend in our axle, that's going to give us a zero camber design; so, our wheels aren't going to be facing in or out, they're going to be just tracking true behind us, so that's going to give us a good straight line acceleration whenever we're towing our trailer, and that also helps to keep our tire tread even across our wheel, or even across our tires. Now this does come with pretty much everything you need to get that axle replaced. We'll get our axle and the spindles, of course, welded on either side, and we'll also have our hub and drum assemblies, and our brake assemblies, as well. We'll also have the bearings, seals, races, grease caps, and a tube of marine-grade wheel bearing grease all included in our system. So, pretty much everything you need to get going here. We'll have our easy lube grease cap that just has that little rubber insert on the end there to help make it easy whenever it's time to do some maintenance to our axle, to keep everything lubricated.

So you just take that little rubber cap out, pop your grease gun on there and then pump it up full of grease to top that off.Inside you'll see our grease circ, our nut, and the keeper. There's also our D washer, our inner and outer bearings, the seals and the races are already installed into that hub face. Also, we'll have our electric brake behind that and all the hardware there; so pretty complete system, all the lugs and studs for our hub.One thing I will say with the bearings, you want to make sure that whenever you install this, that you get those bearings packed full of grease by hand, at first. That's the best way to ensure that they're going to be completely lubricated properly, and that you get all the cracks and crevices there filled with grease, so that whenever you go to use that grease circ to do that maintenance, you don't have any voids in there that don't have any lubrication; so, just one note that I'd make there. As far as our bolt flange pattern for that brake assembly, it is going to be a five bolt pattern. Our hub here is going to have an eight on six and a half bolt pattern, so that gives us eight studs there, and they're going to be six and a half inches apart, center to center, between those opposite plugs.Of course, same thing on the other side.

We also have our electrical connection to make it the back of our brakes there. So all in all, pretty straightforward install. As far as the additional specs with this, again, weight capacity is 7,000 pounds; hub face to hub face length, 94 inches; or our spring center to spring center's going to 79 inches. The drum dimension is going to be 12 inches in diameter by two inches wide. That axle tube, outer diameter's going to be three inches our grease cap outer diameter is going to be 2.72, or two and three quarter inches, roughly.

The wheel stud diameter at the end there, that's going to be a half inch, and this works with wheel sizes of 16 inches. It comes with a limited five year warranty, and this is made in the USA. But that's pretty much going to do it for our look at the Dexter trailer axle with electric brakes and easy lube grease circs.

  • Should I Use the Dexter Trailer Hub/Drum with 5 Lug Utility Instead of 8 on 6-1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern
  • The Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # 8-174-5UC3 uses a very odd 5 lug bolt pattern that the vast majority of trailer wheels will not accommodate therefore this is a major disadvantage over the standard 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. The 5 lug bolt pattern that the above uses is not the same as the common 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern if that is what you were thinking. The minimal savings that you incur would be soon offset by the difficulty of find a matching wheel/tire. I recommend...
