Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Axles - Leaf Spring Suspension - 20545I-ST-72-10 Review

Today we're going to review part number 20545I-ST-72-10. This is the Dexter Trailer Axle with the standard spindles. Come with the idler hubs with a 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Axle is 72 inches long and has a 2000 pound weight capacity. Now this part number includes everything shown here on the table. Includes the axle, includes these two idler hubs, includes the inner and the outer bearings.

Now the bearing races are included and they are actually pre-installed into the hubs themselves. It does come with the grease seals. Comes with these dust caps, the 1/2 inch lug nuts are included and also a tub of the Marine-grade wheel bearing grease. Now this axle beam right here will act as part of your trailer suspension system. You can use it to replace an axle on your trailer, or you can use it to fabricate a suspension to fit your specific application. Now the axle is constructed of a high-strength steel. IF you notice the springs seats are welded to the underside of the axle.

This is where your leaf springs will mount to. Since this is mounted to the underside, it's called an under-slung design axle, and that type of axle will give you a nice, low ride height, which makes it easier to load and unload your trailer. The spindles on this axle you can see there is no drop to them. It is a straight spindle, uses a standard grease application. Now this does include the .. We ship it with the castle nut and the cotter pin and also when we do ship it, it is protected.

Basically you'll see the machined end here where the spindle is, that would be coated with a grease and then bubble wrapped, and then we use a very thick corrugated tube and would actually slide over and be wrapped around it for the -protect it from any damage from shipping. Now the spring seats are welded on, the spindles all welded on, also in the middle you might notice it might be hard to see on this video, but all the trailer axles will have a bend in the middle. In other words, it bend up and then goes down, and basically it's right at the center of the axle so the reason they do this, it'll hep create a zero camber angle. It keeps your wheels and tires for even road to tread contact across the width of the tires. So basically what happens is when this installed like this, the weight when you load your trailer down will push down on the center and sort of even out that axle. And that will ensure that the angle of your wheels is correct for your towing needs.

That will help as far as straight line acceleration and helps in a steady, controlled towing. Now these idler hubs right here, they are made of a cast iron. They're very sturdy and durable. Does have the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Does use the wheel stud diameter of a 1/2 inch, and it does use these included 1/2 by 20 lug nuts. Now this hub is designed to fit wheel sizes 8 inch to 10 inch, and you'll notice with the races already installed, you put your outer bearing in. Also for the inner bearing, this hub just happens to use the same part number for the inner and the outer bearing. Actually on the inner bearing, once you put your inner bearing in, you can see you just tap in your grease seal. Then once you get it all together, finish it off with the dust cap over it, and then to put your wheels and tires on, just use your lug nuts, and go ahead and tighten your wheel and tires down, just like that. Now the weight capacity on the axle is 2000 pounds. The outer diameter of this axle tubing is 1 3/4 inches, spindle size diameter is 1 1/16 inches. Now on an axle, there are multiple ways you can measure the length of an axle beam, but the two most accurate ways are going to be hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center. These are your most accurate. I'm going to show you how both of those are measured. Now the hub face to hub face, basically that's once the hubs are installed on each end, you would measure basically from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the other hub. So in the this case I'm going to give you an idea of the hub face to hub face. I don't have the hub installed, but we can get a rough idea of where they would be positioned. So on this one you can see it would come right to 72 inches, hub face to hub face. Now the spring center to spring center, that one's fairly easy to measure. You measure from the center of this spring seat to the center of that spring seat. Now this measurement will actually give you also the approximate width of your trailer. So on this one if we do center to center, you can see it's going to be 58 inches. That would be your spring center to spring center length. So basically if you're replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of the wheels, the brake type if it uses brakes, and then those two lengths, the hub face and spring center lengths. That should do it for the review on part number 20545I-ST-72-10, the Dexter Trailer Axle with the standard spindles. Includes the idler hubs with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. .

Plus: Good products for a super low price. Accomplished the goal of bringing life back to a dead trailer. The leaf springs ride much better than the stock rubber torsion axle. The new hubs and bearings roll much easier than the worn out ones they replaced. Minus: A little disappointed in the spring bushing. It seemed like cheap plastic and was quite a bit larger than the bolt so it fit loosely. This was the only real negative I have about the purchased, and that's pretty minor. Tips for etrailer: Providing a height of the spring would make spring selection easier. In our case we were starting with scratch for mounting springs, no preexisting mounting hardware. Knowing the height of the spring from mount to axle would have been helpful in selecting a spring for the proper ride height. In a snowmobile trailer application an inch or two in height makes a bit difference in approach angle when loading a sled. This was about the only measurement not listed for springs so we guessed, and it came out well for us in the end. 336994
