Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexter Axles

Dexter axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Quick delivery with tracking link! Great product and price!! Easy process to install axle and hubs. I would have appreciated a torque specification for the U-Bolts and Lug nuts in the video. I didn't take the time to search other locations or Q&A.

Tip: 1-1/2 " PVC makes a great tool to seat the grease seals. I used my 28MM socket, it was very close to size. I decided to use 2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe to install the E-Z Lube dust seal. I have many tools however no wooden hammers.

I'm very happy with the axle w/ idler hubs installed on my RoadRunner 2000lb trailer hauling my 16ft Boston Whaler. The package arrived missing one wheel bearing and a damaged dust cap however eTrailer customer service was quick to resolve the issue. I'm happy with the customer service I received and after watching eTrailer's DIY videos, installing the new axle was a breeze. I would recommend eTrailer to anybody needing quick cost effective trailer repair/upgrades.

by:

This axle was the closest fit to what I needed for my drift boat trailer. I had to modify the trailer a bit, but overall it was an easy install. The only problem was that one of the grease cups got dented during shipping and wouldn't fit. I called the company and was sent a new one. I got a little grief from the person who took my call because I'd tossed the rubber plug out when I threw the dented cup away. I could have done without the lecture that I got from the call taker.

I purchased a replacement axle for my Luodo 3500lb Trailer. Geoffrey was great and very helpful. The only thing was the new axle has a 2" diameter replacing a 3" diameter axle. I wish I new that when I made the purchase. I would of bought new u-bolts and mounting hardware as well. No big deal, light weight trailer. Other than that I will be doing business with them again. Excellent service...They also sent me a tube of grease for the new hubs and bearings that I was not expecting. Thank you

by:

This has put my trailer back on the road. Took about an hour to install, including hand packing the four wheel bearings with grease. This may not have been necessary with the EZ-Lube option, but I'm really picky about bearing lubrication. After installation was complete, I did use the fitting on the end of the spindle to pump the hubs full of grease, and I'm sure this will negate any need to disassemble the hubs in the future just to grease the bearings.

I purchased an entire axle 'package' so I could put a leaf spring suspension under my vintage 1980 utility trailer that never had a suspension before.

All of the products arrived securely packaged and I received everything I had ordered. The parts all went together exactly as they should, and the Etrailer video's and .PDF Instruction files were very helpful in assemblying everything.

I'd definitely recommend these axle/suspension products!

All items were well packaged. I was happy that etrailer called me to let me know that a few items were back ordered and an expected shipping date to see if it still suited my schedule (which it did). I think all the items shipped the next day. Shipping was very fast and FREE. I will use etrailer for any future towing needs.
Excellent communication and the helpful staff make this a great business to deal with.

by:

I got just what I needed and I use the trailer a lot

by:

The axle fit perfectly and delivery was very quick. It would have been helpful if I was told the axle was round as my damaged axle was square. That means I had to scramble around locally and find u-bolts that fit as my square bolts wouldn’t hold the new axle securely....

by:

good quality and great installation videos the only issues were grease was crushed in box and retaining ring was missing but the quick response of the support staff in getting another out to me was fantastic. Job well done

by:

Very user friendly,I had two orders, both arrived earlier than expected, all parts and everything was as described, packaged very well, seems to be good quality...would recommend etrailer.com to anyone looking for quality trailer parts at good cost..Thank you!!

by:

Easy installation, product operating as it should pleased with price!

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Idler Hubs in Trailer Axles

After years of hauling firewood my Harbor Freight Trailer Axle fatigued and cracked. The Dexter Axle from etrailer got me back on the trail. Welded leaf spring seats on the opposite side of the axle at a spacing of 46.5 inches. The wheels stick out an additional 3/4 inch per side. The trailer now rides like a Cadillac. Very excited about putting my faithful trailer back in service, with a serious axle underneath that I have confidence in. The folks at etrailer very helpful and responsive. Thanks

Wonderific! Hauled camping gear up to Lake Tahoe 600 miles round trip, including my 5000 watt generator. Even had a big bear jump in the back to inspect that load when I arrived. The dexter turned the trailer into a very reliable and road worthy hauler. Since installing, made many trips up in Sierra to haul firewood and its been flawless!

  • Difference Between Dexter EZ-Lube Axles
Those axles do not have the same weight rating but are otherwise the same. The Dexter Trailer Idler Axle # 20545I-EZ-72-10 is rated for 2,200 lbs while the Dexter Trailer Axle # 20545I-EZ-72-15 is rated for 2,000 lbs. Apart from that, each axle measures 72" hub face to hub face and 58" spring center to spring center. They use straight, EZ-Lube spindles and have idler hubs that have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern.
