Video Transcript for Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit Installation - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we'll be installing the Roadmaster Base Plate Kit, part number 1419-5. Now to begin our install, on most applications we'll first need to remove the lower splash guard. However, for this application we don't have one, so there won't be one to remove. Our next step will be removing the rock guard behind the front fascia. The rock guard is secured to the frame with four fasteners that go into the well nuts of the frame. These attachment points will also become the new attachments points for our base plate, so we'll need to remove these fasteners and the rock guard, and it will not be reinstalled. Now with the rock guard out of the way, we'll need to remove the front tow hook.

The front tow hooks are secured to the vehicle with three attachment points. To make it easier to remove the tow hooks, we'll go ahead and remove the tow hook from the bracket and then the bracket from the frame. Keep in mind, each process we do here on one side we get to repeat identically on the opposite side. Next, we'll need to lower the sway bar. To do this, we'll remove the two fasteners on each side, releasing the mount from the frame, and then we can go ahead and rotate the sway bar down and out of the way.

We'll hang on to these fasteners, as we'll reuse them to resecure the sway bar. Keep in mind, each one of the new fasteners that we'll use to secure the base plate will get Red Loctite as per the instructions, part number LT1330799. Now with the sway bar out of the way, we've exposed the frame rail on both sides. We're ready to go ahead and start installing the base plate. Taking the base plate mount feeding it into position from underneath the vehicle up towards the front, we'll line it up with the well nuts and the predrilled holes in our base plate bracket. Using the new 10 millimeter bolt, along with the flat washer and split lock washer, we'll secure each one of the brackets to the frame.

We'll be using the well nuts that we removed the rock guard from to secure it with these 10 millimeter bolts. We'll install each of our fasteners finger tight until we have them all in place. Now with our hardware installed finger tight, in some applications it may be necessary to go ahead and run it down a little to take out some of the excess slack, but we'll make sure that we leave the base plate loose until we have all of our fasteners in place. Keep in mind, each process we do here on one side, we get to repeat identically on the opposite side. Next, we'll need to reinstall the sway bar and hardware. The sway bar will secure back to the frame and the hardware will go through the sway bar bracket into the base plate bracket and back into the well nut.

Next, we'll need to install the crossbar. The crossbar will secure the two base plate brackets together. Note for this application, there's a hole in the front grill which allows me to reach through and attach the carriage bolt and block to the bolt leader. In some applications, it may be necessary to remove the front grill and if so, you'll need to remove the multiple fasteners that secure the grill to the front fascia. The crossbar will get fed underneath the fascia, in front of the front radiator and AC condenser. Once we have it in position and lined up with the predrilled holes of the base plate brackets, we'll go ahead and install the half inch bolt, flat washer, split lock washer and nut. We'll have a total of four fasteners to secure, two on each side, securing the crossbar to the base plate brackets. Keep in mind, each process we do here on one side, we get to repeat identically on the opposite side. Next, we'll need to secure the crossbar to the core support. Using the half inch carriage bolt, large spacer block, split lock washer and nut. We'll be using the half inch carriage bolt and large spacer block. To assist us to getting our hardware into position, we recommend using a half inch bolt leader, part number 80101-1. We'll take the bolt leader, feed it up through the crossbar through the round spacer block, through the core support and then up through the access hole in the back of the core support. Then once we have our hardware in position, we can go ahead and remove the bolt leader and install the split lock washer and nut. Keep in mind, each process we do here on one side, we get to repeat identically on the opposite side. Now with all our hardware in place, we're ready to go ahead and tighten it down. Next, we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch secured and torqued to our specifications, we'll go ahead and go over the operation of our new base plate. The quick link and safety cable provided with the install kit will secure directly to the base plate bracket with the quick link. We'll feed the cable through the quick link and the quick link through the base plate and then secure it. Next we can go ahead and install the removable arms. We'll secure the removable tabs to the base plate with the five ace drop pins and safety clip. We'll simply slide directly into the base plate and secure with the pin and clip. Then once we're done towing our vehicle, we can simply remove the tab by pulling the pin and clip and then removing the tab completely. That does it for the install of the Roadmaster Base Plate Kit, part number 1419-5 on our 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .

1998 Toyota RAV4

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I needed to set up our 1998 Toyota RAV4 for dinghy towing. Etrailer.com had everything I needed. The Roadmaster 1142-3 base plates fit as designed and were fairly easy to install, the only body modification needed was trimming the splash pans around the engine for the ends of the mounts. I had to point them out to my wife after installation, they are very discreet when not in use. The Roadmaster 910021-00 QD towbar assembly will make connecting to our RV a breeze, and the RM-98100 second vehicle kit had all the connectors and tubing to install my Brakemaster and BrakeAway cylinders. The long leads on the HM20014 breakaway switch meant I needed fewer wire connectors, and the FA80-01-2160 coiled cable will provide a more finished look when not towing the Toy. I decided to not complicate my life any more than necessary, and selected the EZT20B tow light kit instead of a magnetic kit due to the convertible top on our RAV4. The customer service people at etrailer.com were quick to answer my questions about wiring options, kept me informed when I had a delay, and the shipping/delivery times were unbelievable. Here in Wisconsin I received my orders in TWO DAYS! 233399

Chevy HHR

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

The construction was good with solid welds and weight of material. Shipping was quick as promised. The package had a few fist sized holes in it, but no parts were missing from the parts list. I did notice a few abrasions in the black paint like scratches or chips, likely from shipping. Perhaps better packing could have prevented this. The installation time on the HHR took 6 hours not the 3 that were projected. It required two 1/2 " holes to be drilled in the sheet metal portion of the car that requires two bolts on the front most portion of the base plate. The drilling of these holes took most of the time. I went through two drill bits and believe some special step bits for drilling sheet metal would have helped (not supplied or identified as needed in the instructions). The instructions mention a fishing wire to be used for two other bolts. The fishing wire was not supplied and this took extra time fishing the bolts through the frame. I have heard some kits, perhaps not from Roadmaster provide this. The fit was similar to other experiences on the HHR where there was 1/4 space on one side between car and vertical bracket. The pictures in the instructions were not large enough with sufficient contrast to always see what components on the car were described in the text of the instructions. Arrows in the pictures would have helped also to point out the locations. Summary the install did work, just took extra time. 212419

1999 Honda CR-V

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Installed on 1998 Honda CR-V. Excellent instructions and online video. NO cutting or modification was required to vehicle (some CR-V models have additional plastic trim). The adapter kit fit PERFECTLY per instructions. Total install time was ONE HOUR. Please note the instructions require Locktite RED for the bolts which should be acquired before starting the project. You will need metric tools for the Honda bolts and standard US tools, including torque wrench, for the adapter kit. The kit is EXCELLENT quality. Etrailer provides OUTSTANDING customer service from the pre-sale process to post-install. THANK YOU! A special THANK YOU goes to my customer support and shipping reps! 139483

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Received this towing bracket...did not fit......but....got another within 3-4 days....good service....directions are good for a Honda Element, mine was a 2004 CRV.....if you cannot ad lib...do not try to do the install, otherwise an excellent fit and easy for the not challanged mechanically....if it says 10 mm might be 8 or here rather than there.....very happy with a quality product even if it took a second time.....everyone is allowed a screwup occasionally....and it was taken care of well.... 77741

1997 Subaru Legacy

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

This towbar attachment fit right up to my 97 Legacy wagon. Like the instructions said, there was just a little trimming of the black, soft plastic air foil under the plastic bumper cover. I did that with a tin-snip and a utility knife. I had it installed in a couple hours, including set-up and clean-up. 76622

I got this for a trip from California to Minnesota, pulling the Subaru. Approximately 2000 miles. Pulled the Subaru just fine.

Saturn Vue

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Haven't towed the Vue yet but the install was pretty much as described on the video and written instructions. One suggestion is to install the air dam over the tabs before putting the grill back on . The air dam was a very tight fit and I had to remove more material above the cut outs to get it over the tabs. I think it would be simpler to put air dam over the tabs install grill and then attach the air dam to the bottom of the grill. It looks great exactly as in photos on your install page. 55869

Back from our trip Towed the Vue 14,000 miles, Coast to coast, never had any problems with the base plate or hardware checked the torque on the bolts a couple of times, they were exactly as when I installed the unit. very little signs of wearing where the pins secured the tow bar to the base plate. good value!

1995 Ford Bronco

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I purchased these for my 1995 Full Size Ford Bronco. They are very well built and heavy duty, the pictures don’t do them justice. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. They were very easy to install, and although the instructions say about 2 hours, I was finished in about 45min taking my time. The fit was perfect. I was originally planning to fabricate some myself due to not wanting to spend the 400.00 but I am so glad I didn’t, as these are worth every penny. Shipping was also way faster than I expected! They arrived within a few days of my order! THANKS ETRAILER! 52632

Honda Pilot

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I decided to have this professionally installed, and it turned out great. The only hiccup was the Roadmaster install instructions for a Honda Pilot show the short cables attaching to the insides of the brackets while the holes are on the outside. The installer called Roadmaster and was told the design changed and the short cables are to be connected to the long cables from the motor home (see my picture). So far I've towed it only a few miles back to my house, but it seemed to work just fine. My first real trip is next month. I'll update the review if there's anything significant to report. Thanks etrailer for the expert advice and great customer service! 228211

Toyota Camry

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Near perfect match for the 09 Advertise to be 2.5 hours for the installation. Plan on much more if you attempt to install yourself. I had a reliable Body Shop install the base plate and I'm glad I did. About 4-hours to install the base plate. Instructions are complex and it requires a good deal of expertise for installing on Toyota Camry. Instructions are not 100% accurate and the installation will require some cuting or removal of Camry components. Upon completion of the installation it looks great and everything worked to hook up the tow bar. Etrailor package arrived ahead of schedule with all the necessary components and instructions. 1836

GMC Yukon

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Wow, what a great company to deal with! Am in the process of making my GMC Yukon a tow dingy and called to order the parts. Got to etrailer in my search and it ended there. These people KNOW their trailers and equipment, not only did I get everything I wanted for the best price on the net, but in two instances staff recommended other ways to do the same job that saved me about $309.00. There is one sales rep there, Katie D. who is on the top of her job, an immense help ordering, also pointing out where I can get additional help thru video that etrailer has. Just a great company to deal with. 153039

2012 Chevy Equinox

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I needed a base plate for my 2012 Equinox, and didn't want to try and install it myself, so I called around and got very frustrated trying to find someone reputable to install one without charging an exorbitant install fee. I happened to see etrailer's advertisement on the web, and watched their installation video and was impressed at how thorough it was. I decided to try and do the install myself, and with the help of their video was able to get it installed with NO problems. Anyone with any mechanical ability could this. It was easy and I am very pleased with this product. 231663

Chevy HHR

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Product arrived earlier than scheduled, in good condition. It is installed on my HHR which was fairly easy. Instructions were fair to good, pictures could be clearer. It took me about 8 hours all together, most of the extra time a result of my poor tools and being old and slow. One problem was the nut plate inside the frame was spinning and not holding properly because it is a bit small. I would think an experienced person with proper tools could complete the installation in about 2 hours. Looks good, you can't see it. This is my second baseplate from eTrailer. 23167

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I purchased the Roadmaster Base Plate for our 06 Saturn Vue. The base plate fit exactly as described. Was not to hard to install. I did my self to save money. The hardest part of the job was the removal of the front air dam and cutting out the access holes for the bars, Still not to bad if you have mechanical skills. The staff at e-trailer was very helpful and answered any questions that I had. It was delivered very quickly as stated and arrived on time. If you are considering this type of project I would highly recommend e-trailer. 262472

2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Main Bracket did NOT fit real well. Had to bend mounting arms out to go onto core support bolts. Three upper mounting pads to bumper not in align. center pad touched bumper outer pads had an 1/8" gap. we made 1/8" spacer plates to fill gap. Bumper holes are hard to drill had to resharpen a couple times. I put this on a 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Turn the key on, shift to neutral, turn key off. Towed with no issues. Remember the hybrid has a gear box as apposed to a automatic transmission. 222882

2005 GMC Envoy

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I would have given this an excellent rating, but....the 5/8" main frame holes were 1/8" off. There was no way to get the bolts in without resizing the holes. I recently bought this 2005 GMC Envoy and received a car fax with it. It was a one owner car and has never been wrecked, so everything should have lined up. Once I got past that, everything else went fast and easy. It is very well built and should work well. 202337

Chevy 3500 Express

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Had just a bit of a problem with the bracket on the outside of the frame on the 3500 Chevy van. The body mount bracket and the outside frame bracket for the tow brackets made contact prior to the holes lining up. Solution was to remove about a 1/4" off the bottom of the body mount bracket. After I figured this out, the installation was a snap. I always get great service/shipping/and products.. John 126936

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Instructions were very good for the installation on my 2010 Honda CRV. Fit and finish were good. Product arrived as promised. Minimal tools were needed, but installation with the vehicle on the garage concrete floor was probably a little more tedious than that on a lift. I would say that you do need some mechanical talents to do this on your own. 182136

Made the install much quicker and easier. The most difficult procedure for me was disconnecting the wiring harness on the back of the bumper. An old tack puller (or tool of similar design) would have been great for leveraging the pins out of their holes. Cutting the air dam was a slow process to ensure I didn't cut too much. A paper template to mark where to cut the air dam would make this process much simpler. Again, I can't emphasize enough how great the installation video was for making the steps easier. 126011

2001 Jeep Wrangler

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

My wife and I have owned a 2001 JEEP Wrangler SE since new. It has never been wrecked or damaged in any way. It does have an Old Man Emu lift which raises it about two inches over stock. It also has a Warn winch and bull bar on the front. This JEEP has the factory U channel front bumper. The Roadmaster base plate was purchased after we decided to tow this JEEP with our motorhome. Installation was OK but had a few issues. First off, the Torx bolts under bumper are size 55, not 50, as told in all the instructions I read. The driver side bracket was a great fit and went on very easily. The passenger side bracket was a much different story. Once the Torx bumper bolt was inserted, the second bolt did fit in the hole but third bolt required a lot of work. It is designed to pass thru a slot in the outside section of the frame and then you drill thru to make the hole thru inside edge of frame. The Roadmaster bracket did not line up with slot completely so it required being drilled. That sounds easy but try drilling a 1/2 hole thru a 3/8 slot. You are going to back up many times and break the drill bit edge before you finish! Once installed, the Roadmaster 1420-1 baseplates look nice and seem very strong. You will lose about two inches of approach angle along the bottom edge of front bumper but should not be an issue unless you are a rock crawler. Finished height of hitch came to 21 3/4 inches and is a perfect match to my motorhome which yields a level tow bar so no extra drop receiver for RV needed. That saves about $150. Remember, my JEEP is lifted two inches but you would still be within the three inch margin of saftey with a stock suspension. I would recommend this Roadmaster 1420-1 baseplate to a friend. 268863

2008 Jeep Wrangler JK

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Recently, we decided to setup our 2008 Wrangler JK to be towed behind the motorhome. All I needed were base plates because we had a previous tow car. After doing a search for parts, I decided on etrailer.com to be the source. The product search was easy and the descriptions along with the large photos helped me determine my mechanical skills were enough to install the plates. The order process was quick and easy and the tracking info was helpful. A three day delivery delay occurred due to a snow storm in the mid-west. Once the parts arrived, I installed the parts in about four hours. The instructions were easy to follow, the pictures helped determine the procedure for installing, and everything fit as expected. I could not be more pleased with the base plates and etrailer.com. Thanks very much! 122073

2011 Jeep Wrangler

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

The tow brackets were installed on a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Brackets are well made and the fit was excellant. The installation takes some time as you have to remove and reinstall the bumper and drill some 1/2" holes to get the Brackets mounted. The average homeowner who is a little mechanically inclined will have no problem. The only improvement that we see is with the instructions. Could of supplied a Template for cutting the plastic splash shield under the bumper. If you take you time with measuring the cuts the fit will be excellant. 14883

2014 Jeep Wrangler

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

The Roadmaster XL base Plate Kit was dead on, it looks and feels rugged, was welded together very well and the welds were cleaned up, the kit was painted well, I put the kit in over a two night period about 2 1/2 hrs a night, it went very well, I had alittle trouble seeing the pics in the directions, but once the front bumper is off it made more sense, I had a harder time removing the plastic pieces from my jeep than I did with the install of the brackets, in my opinion this is a great product, it fit perfectly. 49758

2014 Jeep Wrangler Unltd

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

These base plates are going on my 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Freedom edition. This is our new tow vehicle. We previously had a 2004 Jeep Wrangler TJ. I ordered base plates for it from etrailer. Both orders were timely and received in excellent condition. Seems like everyone sells the base plates for the same price, but I went with etrailer the second time because of my great experience with the first order. I will definitely consider etrailer when I have similar needs in the future. 121234

2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Excellent product and customer service. Installation was very easy just follow the directions. Used a Dremel Ultra Saw to make the necessary cuts in the front skid plate. The cuts were very easy to make. Be sure to remove the skid plate first. Used the jeep jack on both sides to align the holes in the base plate to the holes in the frame as this was a tight fit. Used this MX base plate on a 2015 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon Hard Rock. Hope this helps. 272669

2007 Jeep Wrangler

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

It was a great fit to my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I struggled with some crusty bolt on the Jeep but no issues with the base plates. I might suggest to Roadmaster that the installation would have been easier if they had included 4 of the threaded backing plates instead of the two they provided. Some of those bolts were in some pretty tight confines. 222271

I recieved the shipment yesterday however I won't be able to install it on my Jeep until we get back to Alberta after spending the winter in southern California. • Tow Bar Base Plates and Wiring for 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • For base plates, I'd recommend the Blue Ox # BX1115. To wire your vehicle, Blue Ox recommends a bulb and socket kit like part # BX8869. A bulb and socket kit will install by drilling a hole in the rear of the taillight assemblies and installing an additional bulb for use when towing the vehicle. This wiring set up won't require any cutting or splicing into the vehicle wiring, which makes for a pretty easy installation. You'll also need an umbilical like # BX88254 which includes a 4 pin...

  • Do the Base Plate Kits for a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Require a Cross Brace Between Plates
  • The Roadmaster XL Style kit for a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, part # 1419-5, requires a cross brace. The Roadmaster MX Style kit, part # 1419-6, also uses a cross brace. The cross braces are required to add strength and distribute load properly so that the components are not damaged or broken.
