Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

FlatTowing Components

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bars - Coupler Style - RM-020 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part number RM-020. This is the RoadMaster Tracker Tow Bar rated at 5000 pounds. The A-frame tow bar is going to allow you to tow your vehicle safely behind your RV. It's going to feature the full length crossbar that's going to provide maximum strength. It's all made from a nice steel construction. It's got the sealed arms that are going to guard against moisture and debris. It also has a foldable design that makes it very easy to store and I'll show you that more towards the end of the video. There's this little bracket right here that you can see.

This is going to be a safety chain pass through, that way you can cross your chains, wrap it around your arms and then it's got the attachment points back here for your chains to hook into. It's going to feature the high tech powder coat finish so it's going to offer superior durability against rust and corrosion. The Tracker model will fit RoadMaster XL, EZ and standard base plate brackets. It does require the RoadMaster Quick Disconnects for removal of XL and EZ front extensions and it will not work with MX or MS series base plates. Also keep in mind that this cannot be adapted to fit Blue Ox base plates. Here at the front we're going to have the coupler. The latch mechanism right here is very easy to use, to allow you to connect and disconnect from the hitch ball.

It's also got a slot right here, that way you can install a coupler pin or coupler lock. Those are going to be sold separately. You can find those right here at etrailer.com. This coupler is designed to fit a 2-inch ball. Again it's going to offer an overall capacity of 5000 pounds. A couple of measurements to go over real quick.

The overall length of the crossbar here at the back is going to give us a measurement of 33 1/2 inches. Measuring from the center of where it mounts to the center on the opposite side, that's going to give us a measurement of right at 31 inches. All the hardware is going to be included. It's going to come with the pins and clips that attach the arms to the crossbar, as well as the bolts, washers and the nuts that you need to secure this to the tow vehicle. Real quick I just want to go ahead and show you the foldable design. One of these arms will swing, so all we have to do is remove the pin and clip from that spot right there.

Very easy to do; very easy system to use. I'll do that on this side as well. So you can see there that when it's not attached it can come together which is going to take up less space. That way you can easily store it as needed. That's going to do it for today's review of part number RM-020. This is the RoadMaster Tracker Tow Bar rated at 5000 pounds.

I purchased both the parts of the tow system. I just purchase a Jeep Grand Cherokee (99) to pull behind our motorhome for week end trips. We just returned from the first week-end with access to a vehicle to move around the area, and short trips to town. It adds a wonderful dimension to the experience. This system allowed us to pull this vehicle with our motorhome, and I can say it pulled as if there was nothing behind me. It was quick to hook up, and easy to un-hook. My labor time to install was about 2 1/2 Hours, and went smoothly. This is a wonderful product, and works as desired. I have attached photos of the After installation, and the camp-site we stayed at, (proving we made it) 145757

Hi.......I read your review of the Roadmaster Tracker tow bar and am considering purchasing this model. I have to admit, a major consideration is the affordability of this model. The RV dealers in my area are quoting me prices in the neighborhood of $4000 to outfit my RV to tow my Honda CRV. Base plate, tow bar, wiring, brake assist,,,,the works. Way over my budget, so am wondering if there is a more economical way to tow my vehicle.I am thinking of asking how much to only install a base plate on the Honda.... then going with this tow bar unit. I can get magnetic lights to use when I tow again, trying to keep the price down. Is this tow bar easy to connect and disconnect? Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks....Wayne

I've used this tow bar for my little Kia Rio5 Toad behind my 32' Itasca Class A motorhome. Reliable, easy to attach and remove, good construction. Had good experience recent trip from Seattle to Death Valley (7 percent grade in places!) and southern Arizona, over 4,000 miles round trip. It passed the acid test: driving I-5 south in Oregon, traffic suddenly came to a screeching halt ahead of us. We stopped with inches to spare from the car ahead of us. The TOAD stayed right behind, no jack knifing, etc. Good product. 628283

I purchased both the "Tracker" tow bar and the base plate kit, and had the base plate installed by my local mechanic. I was able to install the tow bar attachment plate to the base myself, using a 1/2" drive torque wrench. We've made several trips, some as long as 1200 miles, through mountains and flatlands, on interstates as well as US highways, State roads, and county roads, and have never had a problem with performance. We are very satisfied. 392593

I already have a "StowMaster" tow bar for my 1999 Chevy Tracker, but found that it interfered with my 4X4's ability to approach and climb steep slopes; It also weighed over 60 pounds, reducing my carrying capacity and producing a harsh ride. The "Tracker" tow bar weighs less than half as much and increases my approach angle while improving the ride. etrailer described the "Tracker"bar perfectly, suggested the appropriate quick disconnect kit, offered it for less than anyone else and shipped it quickly! Whatever my future automotive needs I WILL go to them first (and this comes from a retired professional career mechanic/shop foreman). 209944

Okay! Its been a year now totalin around 7000 miles, covering 6 western states, on everything from freeways to dirt desert tracks and everything in between. I wouldnt change a single word of my original review. To add: there are no signs of wear or need for repair. Even the paint is still perfect. The most satisfying purchase of the year.Add another star!

Haven't actually used it yet, but will for around 2 weeks in about 10 days. Could be a little awkward getting it lined up on the ball maybe. We'll have to wait & see. Seems strong enough though. It's heavy. Although it doesn't fold & stow on the car, it's easy enough to remove & it will fold flat for easier storing. 181037

  • Recommended Flat Towing Setup for a 2005 Jeep Liberty With Roadmaster EZ4 Base PLate Kit
  • I really like the base plate kits that have the removable arms like the Roadmaster EZ4 # RM-521423-4 does because it will give your vehicle, your 2005 Jeep Liberty in this instance, much more of an OEM look when you are not flat towing it. I do not recommend using the Tow Ready Adjustable Tow Bar # 63180 as it is a very entry-level tow bar that requires the tow bar mounting brackets to be bolted to your bumper. For some applications there will need to be a custom bracket installed due...

But if you're not worried about the appearance there's no reason you can't bolt the crossbar of the Roadmaster Tracker # RM-020 to your 2006 Jeep Wrangler's bumper. Just make sure you have a good solid connection with the frame behind the bumper fascia. Other components you made need to flat tow...

  • Base Plates, Tow Bar, Safety Cables, and Wiring to Flat Tow 1991 Mazda Miata MX-5
  • The first item you will need to flat tow your 1991 Mazda Miata are base plates. We carry two different options of base plates for your vehicle. First are the XL Plates, # 711-4. These have removable drawbars held in place with a pin and clip. With the drawbars removed the base plates are virtually invisible. For these, trimming of the spoiler, air damn, grille, or plastic fascia may be required for installation. The other option are Standard Plates, # 711-2. These are fixed brackets and...

  • Roadmaster Tow Bar Recommendation for a 2007 Jeep Wrangler
  • Either of the tow bars you mentioned would work well for flat towing your 2007 Jeep Wrangler that appears to have a Roadmaster base plate kit installed on it. I would recommend the Stowmaster part # RM-501 as it has telescoping arms that will make attaching to your Jeep much easier than the Tracker part # RM-020.

  • Will Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit Work With Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar
  • The EZ4 Base Plate Kit, Item # RM-521448-4, will fit your 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and is compatible with the Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar, Item # RM-020. The Tracker is a solid but more basic and "budget friendly" tow bar that may not meet your needs. I recommend considering a non-binding tow bar like the Sterling All-Terrain, Item # RM-576, or the Falcon All-Terrain, Item # RM-522, because they have greater flexibility which will give you an overall better flat-towing experience....

  • Flat Towing Setup Recommendation for a 2002 Honda CR-V with Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar
  • Yes, the Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar part # RM-020 that you referenced can be used to flat tow a 2002 Honda CR-V that has the correct Roadmaster base plate kit installed on it. If your CR-V does not have the factory brush guard you would want the part # 1541-1, if you have the brush guard you would instead want the part # 1541-3. For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground. For lighting you can use the bulb and socket kit, ...

  • Does the Tow Ready Adjustable Tow Bar 63180 Fold Up For Storage
  • No, the Tow Ready Adjustable does not stand up vertically or fold up for storage, but the Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar for 5,000 lbs, part RM-020, does. You should also keep in mind that the Tow Ready Adjustable Tow Bar, # 63180, limits your towing speeds to 45 miles per hour or less.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1988 Suzuki Samurai Behind an RV
  • No, the Roadmaster adapter # RM-033 itself isn't base plates. It is an adapter that attaches to Roadmaster base plates and allows you to then use certain Blue Ox and Demco tow bars. For actual base plates for the 1988 Suzuki Samurai we have Roadmaster base plates # 1003-1 and Blue Ox base plates # BX3501. If you go with the Roadmaster base plates I recommend the Falcon 2 tow bar # RM-520. Or if you are looking for a more economical option I recommend the Tracker # RM-020. The Tracker...

  • Tow Bar Compatibility with Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plates
  • The Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar - 2" Ball - 5,000 lbs # RM-020 is not compatible with the EZ5 Base Plate # RM-521448-5. The Roadmaster EZ5 series base plates will only work with Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch and will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball. For a compatible tow bar, I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount - 2" Hitch - 6,000 lbs # RM-520 which would not require the crossbar for this combination. To use the Tracker...
