Swivel Function

Tow bars are notoriously difficult to connect and disconnect, especially on uneven surfaces. Rigid tow bars have arms that are essentially locked in place so you have to drive your towed vehicle into the exact position necessary for hookup. But with the Alpha, you can connect from the approximate towing position, even on unlevel terrain. The unique swivel design allows the tow bar arms to turn and pivot just enough to compensate for a slight height difference so you no longer have to worry about being on completely level ground.

Self-Aligning Design

The convenient, self-centering arms help to make hookup a snap as well. Once you have connected the tow bar to the base plates on your towed vehicle, simply drive your RV forward until the tow bar arms fully extend and lock in place.

Non-Binding Release Latch

Non-Binding Tow Bar

Blue Ox has defeated the age-old problem of binding by creating a tow bar that is just as easy to release as it is to hook up. Simply press down the locking handles on the tow bar arms until the internal latch disengages. By releasing some of the static pressure from your tow bar you can flex its arms just enough to make disconnecting from the base plates a snap, even when it's out of level with your RV.

Triple-Lug Bracket

Triple-Lug Connection

Blue Ox base plates on your vehicle are equipped with two tabs each that connect to the brackets on the ends of the tow bar arms. These brackets are referred to as "lugs." The unique triple-lug design of the Alpha tow bar creates a tighter, more stable connection by surrounding both base plate tabs. The result is a sturdy, reinforced connection that is stronger and more rigid for a safer, more dependable towing experience.

Hooking up the Alpha to your base plates is as simple as it is secure. Just insert the triple-lug end of the tow bar arm into the base plate so that the center lug is positioned between the two tabs of the base plate. Then insert the 1/2" keeper pin through the lugs and tabs and secure it at the end with the included quick pin.

Simple Storage

The Alpha can be easily stored on your RV when it is not in use. After disconnecting the tow bar from your towed vehicle, push the arms of the tow bar together so that they are side by side. You can then fold them up toward the RV and insert the integrated hold-up bolt into place on the hitch connector. Then pivot the arms down so that they are held firmly in place alongside the RV, parallel to its bumper.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

FlatTowing Components

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

Video Transcript for Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, part number BX7365. Keep in mind, your tow bar is only one component you need to flat tow your vehicle. You also need a base plate, tow bar wiring, as well as a braking system, and you can find all of those at etrailer.com.Our Alpha tow bar is going to connect our motor home and our towed vehicle, so we can get it down the road safely. With our Alpha Tow Bar, you're not going to have to worry about using a ball mount. It's going to go directly into the receiver tube, or the high-low adapter that you're using on your RV, making it that much easier to hook up. If you've ever used a tow bar before, you know that disconnecting can be difficult.

After you go down the road, the tow bar is going to bind up. It makes it extremely difficult to get the pins out. Well, our Alpha tow bar has a non-binding design, which means it's going to give us this lever here, and once those arms lock out and extend, if we push on this lever, it's going to take some of that tension out, making it a lot easier to move the pins around and get them out.Another nice feature is, our Alpha tow bar is actually going to come with some safety cables, so it's one less thing that we're going to have to pick up. They're going to have a nice, spring-loaded hook on the end, and has a heavy duty coil design, which is going to take up some of that slack, and keep them from dragging on the ground. Once we have our tow bar hooked up, you're going to want to do a gentle S-curve with your RV, so that the arms can extend fully, and lock into their rigid position. Our Alpha tow bar is going to have a triple lug design, so it's going to work with Blue Ox base plates that have a connection point that's between 16 and 36 inches apart on center.

Now, it is compatible with some Roadmaster base plates as well, with an adapter that is sold separately. Our Alpha tow bar is going to have a 6500 pound weight capacity, and it's going to work with two-inch receiver tubes. When we're done towing, we can actually unhook our towed vehicle, and we're able to store our tow bar on the back of our motor home. If you do decide to leave the tow bar on the back of your RV, we do have covers available to keep it looking nice. Now that we've had a look at our Alpha tow bar, let's show you how to get it set up. The first thing you're going to want to do is you're going to want to pull your towed vehicle behind your motor home.

A good rule of thumb is generally, if you can touch the motor home and your towed vehicle in arm's length, you should be close enough to hook up. Before we hook up our tow bar, it's always a good idea to double check any measurements. We're going to be measuring at the base plate at the attachment tab, and then also at the receiver hitch on our motor home. The reason why we want it to be as level as possible is because we want our tow bar to pull straight out on our towed vehicle. If it's too high, or too low, it would cause a lot of pulling up or pushing down, causing a lot of stress on the suspension.

We're going to measure to the center of the attachment point on our base plate, and then we're going to measure to the center of the hitch pin hole on our RV.Now, we came up with about six inches of difference between the two. Blue Ox only recommends a maximum of three inches below, or three inches above, so we are going to be using a high-low adapter, and we do have these available at etrailer.com. Now, to hook up our tow car, we're going to take the shank, insert it into our adapter or into the hitch. We're going to line up the hitch pin hole, and we can secure it with the included pin and clip. Now, with our tow bar in this position, we're going to rotate the arms up until that center pin here gets to the center, so we can leave it in this notch. Once we have it lined up, we can rotate the arms down, spread them open. On the end of the arm here, we're going to have a sticker, and it's going to say "up", so we want to make sure that it is facing up. However, if in the future that sticker comes off, just remember that the top of the bolt head should be facing up.We can remove the retaining clip and pin, and then we're going to stretch the arm out and line it up with our base plate, and then we're going to replace the pin and clip. We'll do the same thing for the other side. Now, one thing to note on these clips, you want to make sure that that beveled edge, that slope, the ring goes towards it so that it fully latches. We can take our safety cables now. We're going to hook them to the attachment point on our base plate. Since we hooked this to the passenger side of our car, we're going to take the other side, and we're going to hook it to the driver's side on our RV. You want to make sure that you criss-cross them. We'll do the same thing for the other safety cable. With everything connected, we can hook up all of our other flat tow components and hit the road. That will finish up your look at the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, part number BX7365.

The Tow bar appears well made and of highest quality. We replaced the standard pin with anti-rattle locking pin and my wife made a cover on her sewing machine for the stowed position. I like the fact that it stows well out of the way and our rear RV basement door opens without interference. All the controls and joints move easy enough and all that remains is putting some miles on it. 80812

Still working well, we have knocked some paint off and sprayed a little primer back to keep it from rusting. I have seen no other product that would have been a better choice.Very happy with purchase

Had a good summer of 2014. went to Oklahoma, Maine, and Pennsylvania. All of the BlueOx products worked perfectly. Couldnt ask for anything more, other than a extra driver to cover all the miles, or a blond to keep me company.Have a good one

We use this tow bar mounted on a Thor ACE to pull a 2017 Chevy Sonic. We had to purchase a 6" drop down hitch to line the tow bar up level with the tow bracket on the car. Just slip, snap, and go. It stores out of the way when not in use folded up on the back of the motorhome. Highly recommend this product. 418669

Best tow bar i’ve Ever used. I love that you can decouple the bar. It simplifies the disconnect. We’ve had to disconnect in a hurry a few times. No issues with sway either. I’d buy this over and over again. But I doubt I’ll need to buy another one. The quality is second to none. 653650

etrailer is 5 stars all the way. I ordered before noon on monday and the parts show up before noon on wednesday. I wasn't even ready for them yet! I ordered the rm-155 tail light kit and it installed easily the next day. I'm still working on the baseplate but it looks well made and all parts are there. There is no install with the tow bar but again it looks well made and all the parts are there. I will try and update after it's completed but life is getting in the way with family, again. I wish all e retailers were this good. 418520

After several thousand miles on this towbar, there have been no issues. I am now to the point where I can hook up the car myself in under 5 minutes start to finish. Fit and finish of the baseplate is very good and has gone through snow and rain also salt on the road. Would I use etrailer again? Absolutely!

I bought this to replace an aluminum blue ox tow bar. I sent that unit back to blue ox to be checked and was informed that the arms were wallowed out and it would be approximately 600 dollars to repair it. Although the unit was only three years old it had probably had a good 20000 miles on it. They only offered 150 dollar discount off retail and implied I had overloaded it. I pulled a jeep wrangler at 4200 lbs with the unit rated at 7500 lbs. Then they suggested that I didnt install it level. I mounted it perfectly level. I woulnt have bought another blue ox but I have a custom front bumper with welded mount so I didnt want to use an adapter. havent had a chance to use this one but it feels heavier. Although I much prefer lighter, durable and reliable are the most important with a tool like this. This company would be wise to study how etrailer treats people and emulate them. etrailer is my go to company for all my towing stuff, 505307

The Blue Ox BX7365 works perfectly with my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Very easy to install, setup, connect and disconnect. I did need install a 6" drop receiver to level the tow bar between my (Georgetown) RV and the towed vehicle. Just completed a 700 mile round-trip with absolutely no problems. I had no issues with the pins binding, nor getting the telescoping arms to lock in place while using. 347948

I have now installed the following on my 2017 Wrangler: Brake light relay kit . Hopkins Towed vehicle Tail Light wiring kit. Blue Ox base plate. Blue Ox Patriot Portable RF Braking System. All of this has taken about 3 days of work spread out over a week or so. Overall it went well. Not too many surprises. Crawling around under a car at 71 is a bit of a strain but I'll get over it. I must say that Donna P. has been a wonderful source of great information and has stayed right on top of the process. eTrailer has been a great source for this project. I would recommend you all with no hesitation. 396393

I ordered all the parts required to safely flat tow out 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk from etrailer.com. The only part they didn't have was the Mopar Flat Tow Enhancement kit Jeep requires to flat tow this model. Ordering from them was great, the website is easy to use and I was able to locate all the pieces compatible with my specific vehicle. The expert recommendations help my decision choosing the right parts. I ordered from etrailer even though I found some of the parts on other websites a little cheaper. I chose to pay a little more because of all the effort etrailer has put into installation videos and guides. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn from etrailer that they have a price match guarantee! So my equipment consisted of the following Mopar Flat Tow Enhancement Kit (from Jeep) Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles Mighty Cord 7-Way RV Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End WesBarg 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 6' Long Coiled Cable Trailer End Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV Blade-Style Trailer Socket - Vehicle End Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar - Motor Home Mount - 6,500 lbs Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms Blue Ox Tow Bar Cover - Aladdin, Aventa LX, Aventa II The installation videos are great but not all inclusive. Take the time to read the instructions that come with the parts. This is a major project, I took about 30 hrs over a full week but as you'll see in the pictures I took s few extra steps to make a cleaner look. Some of those extra steps: The base plate install requires the bumper be modified cutting off a flange on each side, I spray painted this to prevent corrosion. In the install video of the baseplate on the drivers side they use an extra quick link (not included) to run the safety cable around the wiper fluid reservoir. I took the time to remove it and run the safety cable behind it. I didn't want our nice new vehicle to look like it can be towed so I played the brake away switch and 7 way trailer plug behind the license plate, so when not being towed our vehicle looks great! Some things to be aware of. The Brake air cylinder that mounts to the brake pedal with four bolts may need longer bolts, it did on our Jeep. Spend the money for weather tight heat shrink crimp fittings. The Hopkins wire harness was about 1.5 feet short to get to my plug location. Buy extra zip ties, electrical tape and split loom. I recommend reading all the various installation manuals and watching all the videos because the various components integrate together and if you install one at a time you'll be doing a bunch of extra work. The brake light relay is a real pain in the butt, not because of the hardware but because of the location of the brake light switch which is very hard to get to. Overall I am very happy with the products and how the installation looks. We haven't towed it yet but do not expect any problems. 413527

This is my 4th Blue Ox Tow bar. The last one went with the a class bus we traded on a 5th wheel, (what a mistake to get a 5th wheel, a real pain to deal with). Picking up a new Jayco Precept A Class tomorrow. I checked the blue wire thing with my truck to my toad and all is still well with the wiring and lights. The tow bar speaks for itself. We have traveled over 250,000 miles in the US and Canada tugging a toad with now trouble thanks to Blue Ox and now especially thanks to etrailer. All is good and just in time to travel again next week. Thank you George for a job well done an a great company! Your prices on my 3 items saved me over $ 450.00 compared to buying at the theses 3 items at the dealership. The dealer said the car base plate tags simply were not available everywhere. HA! They didn't research etrailer. 370089

Reviewing the video on the website I was able to get my grill and bumper off to install the baseplate. I had one issue with a screw bracket but one call to etrailer got a replacement put in the mail to me. Very minor trimming of the bumper to get it back on over the base bracket. The finished look is great, of course you can see the base plate but it blends in nicely and looks professional. The blueox hitch fits perfectly on the base plate. No more having to deal with my mastertow dolly and man handling where to put it after we get to the campground, and no more having to ratchet the tires to the dolly. Now we are looking forward to taking my jeep with us on trips, just release the 2 pins to detach, no more back breaking of pushing the tow dolly anymore 720870

Very pleased with the ease of hooking up to the tow car , but even on a level surface it binds on one side of the locking handles , i have to bump the tow car back and forth to get it to release , So its take two people to unhook , kind of a pain . So i give it a 50 out of 100 . Maybe just this tow bar has a manufacturing flaw it always binds on the same side , not sure . Can you give me some advise maybe there is something i am doing wrong or could there be a problem with your product , thanks 683554

Comments

If you have an issue with one arm of your Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar binding, Blue Ox recommends unhooking the non-bound arm, turning the steering wheel of the towed vehicle in the direction of the bound arm to release the tension, and then removing the second arm. You may need to move the wheel back and forth if the arm is still bound. Slowly backing up the car with the tow bar attached is another way to force the tension to release. The Alpha is an older-style non-binding tow bar from Blue Ox. Their newer non-binding tow bars such as the Avail # BX7420
Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount - 10,000 lbs
$975.00
feature an updated non-binding technology.

  • Flat Tow Wiring for a 2017 Jeep Wrangler
  • The Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit, part # RM-15267, is the best option for you to use to flat tow your 2017 Jeep Wrangler. It will provide a 6-Way wiring harness to the front of your Wrangler that you can connect to the 7-Way on your RV with the included Flexo-Coil cord. If your Wrangler has separate lighting you will need to use a wiring converter, part # 118158, along with 2 additional diodes, part # RM-792, to keep your turn and brake signals separate. If...

  • Recommended Toad Towing System for 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL
  • Since you already have the Blue Ox baseplates # BX1139, I recommend using the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7365 which comes with the safety cables you need as well as the hitch pin. If you desire more security I also would add the Blue Ox Base-Plate and Receiver Lock Kit - Qty 4 # BX88177 which will give you the hitch pins for your motorhome hitch as well as a high-low adapter and then the pins for your base plate connections. Then for your tow bar wiring I recommend the Roadmaster Diode...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2017 Ford F-150
  • Flat towing requires a number of components including base plates, tow bar, a lighting/wiring kit, safety cables, a supplemental braking system and a high/low hitch adapter. Each of these is detailed in the linked articles on flat towing. The Roadmaster base plates you referenced, part # RM-524431-5, are a confirmed fit as long as you do not have the Raptor version, but a better choice is the Blue Ox kit # BX2671 which features twist-lock draw bars. The others use hitch pins that can...

  • Best Flat Towing Setup For A 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk With 4 Wheels Down
  • The best setup to tow your 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk behind your RV would involve the use of a flat towing system. This option is only compatible with 2 speed power transfer units. Please consult your vehicle's owner's manual for further information. In order to flat tow your Jeep with 4 wheels down, you will need a few items. The five main components of a flat towing system are base plates, tow bars, safety cables, brake harness wiring, and supplemental braking system. I have attached...

  • The Blue Ox Base Plate Adapter Brackets for Smittybuilt XRC Atlas Bumpers # BX88304 that you referenced are custom fit for 2007-2017 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited Jeeps that have the Smittybuilt XRC Atlas bumper. It should not be modified to use with the tube-style bumper on your 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ. I have attached a picture with the dimensions that you asked for, but with that being said, it is better that you go with a setup that was designed to be used either with a U-channel...

  • Can 2017 Jeep Wrangler with SmittyBilt XRC Bumper be Flat Towed
  • For your 2017 Jeep Wrangler with a Smittybuilt XRC bumper we have the Blue Ox adapter part # BX88304 which will allow to connect the vehicle to a Blue Ox tow bar like part # BX7365. For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install...
