Sturdy, Built-to-Last Tow Bar

Commander Tow Bar

The Commander tow bar is tough and built to last. Sturdy, modular steel construction offers the strength you need to pull up to 6,000 lbs. Two hitch pin holes allow you to position the tow bar closer to or further from your RV, without sacrificing load capacity.

The black powder coat finish protects against the elements and flying road debris. And stainless steel inner arms provide additional durability and allow for smooth operation. Quality-engineered pivot points and hardware ensure both strength and maneuverability.

Commander Tow Bar

Fast, Easy Hookup

Commander Independent Arms

With independent, easy-to-maneuver arms, the Commander makes connecting your towed vehicle to your motorhome a breeze. Unlike most tow bar arms that move together along a single plane, the Commander tow bar arms operate completely separately from one another. A vertical bolt through the head of the tow bar keeps the arms positioned one on top of the other, allowing for a more fluid hookup. The arms pivot horizontally on this bolt, allowing for an unlimited spread so that you can hook up to base plates with almost any spacing. A built-in joint at the base of each arm allows for vertical movement so that you don't have to tilt the entire head when positioning the arms.

Commander on Jeep Wrangler

The arms telescope for easy extension to your base plate connection points, even if your towed car is not perfectly aligned with your RV. The self-supporting design of the arms also allows you to telescope one arm out and attach it to the base plate without having to worry about supporting the opposite arm at the same time. The arms lock into place when you're ready to tow, and the extra length of the arms allows for a better turning radius. By putting more distance between your motorhome and your towed car, your entire setup will become easier to maneuver so that your towed car will track behind your motorhome without running the risk of hitting your RV during turns.

Non-Binding for Simple Disconnect

Commander Non-Binding Design

The built-in trigger releases make it easy to disconnect the Commander. Tension can build up in a telescoping arm when the RV and towed vehicle are not perfectly aligned. Engaging the trigger on each arm releases pressure and allows the arms to telescope freely, making it easy to disconnect the tow bar from the base plates, even if you are at a hard angle or out of level.

Each trigger release latch is positioned on the side of the tow bar arm. This allows for a comfortable yet firm grip, unlike latches that are positioned on the tops of tow bar arms, which can be difficult to grab. This out-of-the-way placement of the latches also creates a clean look for the tow bar.

Base Plate Compatibility

Excalibar II on Jeep Cherokee

Towing your vehicle behind your motorhome is simple and stress-free with the Commander, especially when paired with Demco custom-fit base plates (sold separately). Victory Series tow bars are designed specifically for use with Demco Classic and Demco Tabless base plates, which means they allow for easy hookup without the need for a bulky crossbar.

When using the Commander with Demco Classic base plates, simply place the lugs inside of the base plate brackets and use the included pins and clips to secure each arm in place. Demco Tabless base plates include brackets that mount on each tow bar arm, eliminating any protruding brackets from your vehicle and allowing for a quick, quarter-turn hookup of each arm.

If you have base plates from a different manufacturer on your towed car currently, an adapter may be available. Demco makes adapters for use with other manufacturer's base plates so that you don't have to go through the added hassle of replacing the connection points on your vehicle.

Type of Base Plate Use Adapter
Roadmaster Crossbar-Style (XL, EZ, EZ2, and EZ4 series) DM9523001
Roadmaster Direct-Connect (EZ5, MS, MX series) DM9523032
Duncan DM9523017
Reese Tow Champ and Valley Industries DM9523019
Blue Ox DM9523041

Straight, Vinyl-Coated Safety Cables Included

Commander Vinyl Safety Cables

Two straight, vinyl-coated safety cables provide added protection should the tow bar ever disconnect during towing. The cables are held off the ground by the included mounting clips. These clips keep the cables from dragging on the ground, preventing damage and tangling. Steel S-hooks with spring-loaded latches connect each cable to your towed vehicle's base plates and to your motorhome's trailer hitch.

Commander Storage Rod for Cables

The tow bar also offers a convenient storage rod for securing your coiled electrical cord (sold separately). The rod holds your power cord neatly out of the way and up off the ground.

Versatile, Secure Storage

Commander Bar Storage

Independent arm movement also allows for storage versatility. Easily store the tow bar out of the way, alongside your RV. The arms can be folded up to the right or to the left, or you can fold one arm to each side so that they are parallel to your motorhome's bumper. Just pivot each arm into position and a peg at the base of the arm will snap into a built-in tab, latching the arm in place so that you don't have to worry about it coming unfolded during travel.

Commander Arms Store to Left or Right

For added protection, slip on the Demco tow bar cover (DM9523042 - sold separately) while the tow bar is folded up either to the left or the right against your RV.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Towing Basics

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

Video Transcript for Demco Commander Tow Bar Review

Speaker 1: Today you're going to be taking a look at the Demco Commander tow bar, part number DM9511010. Our tow bar is going to be the connection point between our motorhome and our towed vehicle, giving us a solid connection point so we can go down the road safely. And our tow bar is going to evenly distribute the pulling weight that's on the front of our towed vehicle so we're not putting so much stress and strain on the factory suspension, and it's going to have more of an even, wider-spread pull. Now our Demco Commander is going to have a lot of features that some tow bars just aren't going to have, and it's going to make it a lot easier for us to hook up. Like the fact that they are going to have two separate arms on a pivot point, so we can hook one arm up and leave the other one in the stored position without having to worry about fumbling around with both of them trying to get it into the base plate. And the fact that we'e going to be able to store this in multiple different positions is always a nice option. Now, one of the nice things about the Commander is that it is going to be a self-aligning design.

So once we have it hooked up, you can see that the arms are going to extend out, and the arms are gonna lock into a rigid position. And you also notice this lever here has been extended out. Now, we're going to have one on each arm, and what that's for is it's going to take the tension off whenever we go to unhook, 'cause we've all been in that situation if you've flat towed before. Hooking up's not that bad, but when you go to unhook, a lot of times you can't get the pin out or you can't get the arm to retract because there's all that tension.Well, it's a nonbinding design, so as soon as we push on that lever here, it's going to take all that tension out, make it a lot easier to unhook. Then you might notice that over here on the side of the arm we're going to have this rod.

We're going to have a pin and clip holding it in place. Now, if we remove the pin and clip, what this is for this is that we can actually take our electrical cable, we can feed the end of our cable onto that rod, figure out how much we need to plug it in. We can take our clip, and we can secure it, and it'll keep our electrical nice and tidy. We don't have to worry about it getting tangled up in the tow bar or in our safety cables. And the nice thing about the Commander is the fact that it can store on the back of our motorhome. And we're not only limited to having it to this side.

We're going to have three different configurations that it'll store in. We're going to have all the way to the left. And if we grabbed the upper arm and kind of lift up and take that little detent out of the ring, we can swing it over, and we can store them one on each side. Or we can swing the other arm over as well and store them both on the other side. Our Commander is going to slide directly into a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, so we're not going to have to have a coupler or a ball mount or anything else to mess with it.Now we do have a high/low adapter here to make up for some of the height difference, but our Commander already has a built in one-and-a-half inch drop or rise depending on which position you have it.

Now, in order to put it in the other position, we remove the nut and bolt going through right here, as well as the bolt here and on the other side, and then we can flip the stinger over and torque it down. Our Commander is going to come with a pin and clip as well as our safety cables, so we're not going to have to pick up anything else once we have our tow bar.To hook our tow bar up, we're just going to want to remove the caps out of our base plate. So we just twist them and pull them out. And the nice thing about our Commander is the fact that we can do one arm at a time rather than unlike some of the other tow bars, and we don't have to worry about holding that second arm up because it will hold itself up while we hook it up. We're going to want to remove the pin and clip that's in our tab here. We going to take our tab. You insert it in making sure that that ring and hole is on the top, and then we're just going to want to rotate it to where that bolt's going to be on top, and we can insert our pin and latch the clip so it won't come undone. Then we can take our safety cable. We're going to hook it up to the tab right here, and we're going to repeat that for the other side. Our Commander is rated at 6,000 pounds. Now, you want to double check how much your towed vehicle weighs and how much your hitch is rated for on your motorhome, and you want to go with the lowest of all of those ratings. That'll finish up your look at the Demco Commander tow bar, part number DM9511010.

Very nice looking tow bar; quality seems quite good. Have not put it in use as yet, but do not foresee any problems. The tow vehicle is a Thor ACE 29.3; "toad" is a Nissan Xterra (manual trans.). Bought Demco's baseplate and have it installed and ready to go. Only issue is the height difference between the hitch on the ACE and the baseplate mounts: Baseplate mounting tabs are 23" above ground level; hitch receiver is 15". With the tow bar tongue flipped to rise 1 1/2", I've ordered a 6" rise adapter for the receiver, so all should be good. 628237

Great product, so far. Haven't used it yet. Looks solid and well made. Heavy and doesn't collapse very small. 608266
