Swivel Function

Tow bars are notoriously difficult to connect and disconnect, especially on uneven surfaces. Rigid tow bars have arms that are essentially locked in place so you have to drive your towed vehicle into the exact position necessary for hookup. But with the Alpha, you can connect from the approximate towing position, even on unlevel terrain. The unique swivel design allows the tow bar arms to turn and pivot just enough to compensate for a slight height difference so you no longer have to worry about being on completely level ground.

Self-Aligning Design

The convenient, self-centering arms help to make hookup a snap as well. Once you have connected the tow bar to the base plates on your towed vehicle, simply drive your RV forward until the tow bar arms fully extend and lock in place.

Non-Binding Tow Bar

Non-Binding Release Latch

Blue Ox has defeated the age-old problem of binding by creating a tow bar that is just as easy to release as it is to hook up. Simply press down the locking handles on the tow bar arms until the internal latch disengages. By releasing some of the static pressure from your tow bar you can flex its arms just enough to make disconnecting from the base plates a snap, even when it's out of level with your RV.

Triple-Lug Connection

Triple-Lug Bracket

Blue Ox base plates on your vehicle are equipped with two tabs each that connect to the brackets on the ends of the tow bar arms. These brackets are referred to as "lugs." The unique triple-lug design of the Alpha 2 tow bar creates a tighter, more stable connection by surrounding both base plate tabs. The result is a sturdy, reinforced connection that is stronger and more rigid for a safer, more dependable towing experience.

Hooking up the Alpha to your base plates is as simple as it is secure. Just insert the triple-lug end of the tow bar arm into the base plate so that the center lug is positioned between the two tabs of the base plate. Then insert the 1/2" keeper pin through the lugs and tabs and secure it at the end with the included quick pin.

Simple Storage

The Alpha 2 can be easily stored on your RV when it is not in use. After disconnecting the tow bar from your towed vehicle, push the arms of the tow bar together so that they are side by side. You can then fold them up toward the RV and insert the integrated hold-up bolt into place on the hitch connector. Then pivot the arms down so that they are held firmly in place alongside the RV, parallel to its bumper.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

FlatTowing Components

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

Video Transcript for Blue Ox Alpha 2 Tow Bar Review

Hi there, flat towers. Today, we're going to be taking a look at Blue Ox's Alpha 2 tow bar. Your tow bar is one of five main components you'll need when flat towing your vehicle behind your motor home.In addition to your tow bar, you'll need your safety cables, which is a supplemental connection in addition to your tow bar and these come included with your Alpha 2 tow bar, so that's another thing knocked out for you. You'll also need your baseplate, which is the connection point on your vehicle. You'll need your diode wiring, which sends all the lighting signals from your motor home back to the lights at the back of the vehicle so people behind you know your intentions, and your supplemental braking system, which will apply the brakes in the vehicle whenever you hit the brakes in your motor home, helping you come to a safe stop.It has a weight rating of 6,500 pounds, which is going to be suitable for just about every car out there and even some of your smaller SUVs and light trucks. They're designed to hook directly to a Blue Ox baseplate, which you see here, using their patented three-lug design, which gives you plenty of meat connecting these two.

Now, if you don't have a Blue Ox baseplate, there are adapters available here at etrailer.com, so you can get this tow bar working with whatever manufacturer that you've installed. One of the features you really want to look for in a tow bar is to ensure that it's nonbinding. This one here's nonbinding and here are the release levers that release the arms if they do get into a bind. You may see some other ones out there that just have a button instead of a release lever and with those, it's very difficult to get it to unbind because that button is very difficult to push just with your hand. You often need some kind of extra leverage or a hammer just to get those released. We don't have that problem with the Alpha 2.We just got done pulling our vehicle here and to get it released, we're going to press down on our nonbinding lever, which frees up our arms, making it easier to disconnect them.

If it was in a bind, you wouldn't have any play here, but by being able to release the tension on the arm with the lever, we can easily get these disconnected without having to fight it.I can show you how that works here. Our arm is currently in its locked-out position, but we can release that with our non-binding lever there. That's typically what causes a bind. Whenever you pull your vehicle, it comes out and it locks into place. Then if you're on any uneven surfaces, you've now got the angles fighting against each other, causing this to bind up.

Being able to release the tension without any tools makes this tow bar just that much better than the ones that don't because you don't have to worry about losing any components and where you placed them whenever you need them, you just got it here all the time.Another thing I like about the Alpha tow bar here compared to some of the other manufacturers is the fact that it has a dust boot over the telescoping arms. Many of the other manufacturers don't and the arm can then get dirt and debris on it, which could eventually work its way up into the seals and make them not glide as smooth as they used to. Keeping it completely sealed keeps all that dirt and debris and moisture out of here, ensuring long-lasting smooth operation of our arms. It's a solid steel construction with a black powder coat finish to ensure long-lasting, corrosion-free operation. Now, if you currently have a home and you're considering bringing your vehicle with you, you do have a few options. There's the flat-tow setup like we have here, which is my preferred recommended option to flat tow, but there's also a tow dolly, or you could flatbed it.Now, we all know the big issue with the flatbed.

You've got a very large trailer that you're going to be hauling around with you. You have to have somewhere to store it. It's going to be on your campsite the whole time. There's a lot of downsides with that. The only upside to the flatbed is you can bring any vehicle on a flatbed regardless of its configuration, whether it's front-wheel, rear-wheel, all-wheel, doesn't matter with those. The next option is a tow dolly, which is much smaller than your whole flatbed. It's just for the front wheels to lift those off and the back wheels remain on the ground. This is a great option if your vehicle is compatible with it, but they're only compatible with certain vehicles. Most rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles are not going to be compatible with a tow dolly, only the front-wheel-drive vehicles. The other issue with those is that they don't track the same as a flat-towed vehicle. It's going to track more just like a regular trailer pulling behind you, so when you go to make those turns, you have to make them extra wide to ensure your vehicle is going to clear. With a flat-tow setup here, we don't have to worry about that because the wheels in our vehicle are going to turn when we're driving, so our vehicle tracks directly behind us so we don't have to overcompensate and turn extra wide to ensure our vehicle clears. We almost really don't even know that there's a vehicle behind us because it's tracking so closely behind our motor home. While this is a great tow bar that will allow you to bring your vehicle flat towed behind your motor home, my personal recommendation is Roadmaster's Nighthawk. If you have a Blue Ox baseplate like we do here, we had that available with Blue Ox three-lug ends pre-installed on it. The Nighthawk's going to have a slightly higher weight rating of 8,000 pounds so you can pull something a little bit bigger if you need to.The other reasons I really liked the Nighthawk is that it's an all-aluminum construction, so it's going to be lighter and easier to move around, and it has cable management underneath, so none of your cables are just going to be flopping around here, they actually run through a channel. The cables and the wiring also come included with your Nighthawk, so you really got just about everything you need for the connection process here all in one package. When you're all done using your tow bar, we can lift it up and the peg here will line up in the slot here to hold it in place. We simply just go straight up and then we pick one side, whether it be the left or the right, and tip the tow bar off that way. That will lock it in the slot and keep it up and you can just carry on your business with a tow bar in the back of your motor home. Blue Ox also has covers available here at etrailer.com, so if you decide to leave it on your motor home all the time, you can protect it from the elements by storing it in the cover. When you're ready to use your tow bar, you can go ahead and slide it in and line up the holes with the hole in your receiver. There's two sets of holes. You can use either one. There's about a two-inch space between the two holes. Either one will work. We're going to use the one closest to the end of the tow bar to extend out a little further and we'll secure it with the included pin and clip. When you're ready to hook up your tow bar, we want to go ahead and remove the pins from the arms. We'll then lower our tow bar down a bit, separate the arms. You'll notice on here that they have a label for up. We want to make sure that it is in the correct orientation. Then we'll line up our arm with the three lugs right directly to our Blue Ox baseplate. We can then insert the pin, which will hold it in place, and then lock our pin in with the smaller clip. We'll do the same thing over on the other side. Then we can take our included safety cables and attach it to the baseplate on the vehicle. Then we're going to bring the other side and we're going to cross it, so I hook this to the driver's side on the vehicle, and I'm hooking it to the passenger side on the motor home. We'll do the same thing with the other side. This will create a cradle in the event of a catastrophic disconnect, which will keep our components from digging down into the pavement. You can then finish connecting up your diode wiring and your braking system and all the stuff now is to place your vehicle in tow mode and you're ready to hit the road. That completes our look at Blue Ox's Alpha 2 tow bar.

I have now installed the following on my 2017 Wrangler: Brake light relay kit . Hopkins Towed vehicle Tail Light wiring kit. Blue Ox base plate. Blue Ox Patriot Portable RF Braking System. All of this has taken about 3 days of work spread out over a week or so. Overall it went well. Not too many surprises. Crawling around under a car at 71 is a bit of a strain but I'll get over it. I must say that Donna P. has been a wonderful source of great information and has stayed right on top of the process. etrailer has been a great source for this project. I would recommend you all with no hesitation. 396393

I am still in love with the products. My only issue is having enough time to use them more.

We use this tow bar mounted on a Thor ACE to pull a 2017 Chevy Sonic. We had to purchase a 6" drop down hitch to line the tow bar up level with the tow bracket on the car. Just slip, snap, and go. It stores out of the way when not in use folded up on the back of the motorhome. Highly recommend this product. 418669

Everything is working just fine, no problems, nothing but good performance.

etrailer is 5 stars all the way. I ordered before noon on monday and the parts show up before noon on wednesday. I wasn't even ready for them yet! I ordered the rm-155 tail light kit and it installed easily the next day. I'm still working on the baseplate but it looks well made and all parts are there. There is no install with the tow bar but again it looks well made and all the parts are there. I will try and update after it's completed but life is getting in the way with family, again. I wish all e retailers were this good. 418520

After several thousand miles on this towbar, there have been no issues. I am now to the point where I can hook up the car myself in under 5 minutes start to finish. Fit and finish of the baseplate is very good and has gone through snow and rain also salt on the road. Would I use etrailer again? Absolutely!

I purchased a Alpha 2 tow bar and it arrived within the time frame etrailer gave me. Upon opening the package ( thru no fault of etrailer) the hitch pins and clips had not been inserted. I called and Lori in customer service took it upon herself to get me a re-order and ship them to me same day ! You don't get better service than that ! I just got the tow bar yesterday so have not used it yet. Appears of better quality than my old falcon all terrain. 760527

We do indeed offer base plates for the 2005 Chevy Avalanche 4x4. My research indicates that your Avalanche is capable of being flat towed but there are usually very specific steps that must be followed before flat towing the vehicle. You'll need to: 1) Place transmission in Park. 2) Turn the engine off, but leave key in 'on' position. 3) Set the parking brake. 4) Hitch Avalanche to tow bar and tow vehicle according to instructions 5) Shift the transfer case into Neutral. (vehicle...

  • Dual Receiver Adapter for Use with Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar BX7380 and Hitch Bike Rack
Any tow bar, such as the excellent Blue Ox Alpha # BX7380, used to flat tow a vehicle like your 1995 Wrangler should be level or nearly so in order to operate best. Tow bars can be up to 3-inches higher or lower than dead-level on either end, strictly speaking, but they all will work better (less binding of the telescoping arms) when they are level. We offer high-low hitch adapters like # RM-076 and # BX88132, shown on the linked page and reviewed in detail in the linked article, that...

  • Using Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar and Need Base Plate Kit for 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee
When using the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, # BX7380, I recommend going with Base Plates, # BX1115, for your 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. These custom fit base plates provide attachment points for the tow bar and no adapters will be needed. If you still need lighting for the Jeep, I recommend going with the E-Z Mount Tow Light Kit, # EZT20B, if you do not plan to flat tow very often. These lights will fit at the top of the rear hatch and plug straight into the 4 way on the RV so no additional...

  • Replacement Shank for Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar BX7380
On the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7380 the vertical bracket on the shank that accepts the pin when storing the tow bar in the vertical position comes from the factory with an oval slot. My contact at Blue Ox confirmed this is the only bracket ever supplied on that tow bar and it is shown in the linked photo. It is designed to allow the tow bar to lean either towards the driver- or passenger-side when stored. You can certainly add a tie-down strap or bungee cord to help secure the tow...

  • Items Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Behind Motorhome
Flat towing a vehicle behind a motor home safely and legally requires a number of components, including base plates for the toad, safety cables, a tow bar, a lighting/wiring kit and a supplementary braking system. The linked article explains each of these items in some detail. We offer a range of base plates that will fit the 2014 Wrangler Sahara so long as it does not have aftermarket bumpers, winches, or brush guards. I suggest the Blue Ox # BX1126 with removable arms which comes...

  • Recommended Flat Towing Setup for a 2014/2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Towed by a RV
The best and safest way to flat tow your 2014 or 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is with a flat towing setup. Tow hooks were not designed to be used for flat towing purposes. There are 5 components to a flat towing setup: Tow bar, base plate kit, safety cable set, tow bar wiring and a supplemental braking system. Base plates are essential and the ones I recommend are the Blue Ox # BX1136 because the draw bars are easy to remove when your Jeep isn't being towed. The most popular and compatible...

  • Blue Ox Base Plate and Tow Bar Compatibility with a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer
The Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, # BX1709, for your 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer is rated for more than 5,000 lbs. Blue Ox states that the weight capacity of their base plates are designed to match the weight capacity of the vehicle they are installed on. The 5,000 lb limitation is if you are using a base plate adapter like part # RM-033 which allows you to use a tow bar from one manufacturer and base plates from another. If you use the Blue Ox base plates and a Blue Ox tow bar rated for...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2012 Chevy Equinox AWD Behind a Motor Home
I checked the owner's manual online for a 2012 Chevy Equinox with All-wheel drive and you can flat tow it behind a motor home. Take a look at the recreational towing section (10-78) in the owner's manual to confirm. As far as a rear towing package I assume that you mean a trailer hitch. The trailer hitches that fit a 2012 Equinox will actually fit 2005 to 2016 Equinox models; such as Curt Class III hitch # 13591. But the hardware will have to be replaced since it is designed to be torqued...

  • Recommended Flat Towing Components for 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman
If your 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman is AWD then it cannot be flat towed or dolly towed and must be towed on a trailer. If you have the FWD model with the 6 speed manual transmission, it is towable as is. There are no fuses that need to be pulled on this vehicle. I recommend the following to do so: Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # BX1308 Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7380 (which includes safety cables) Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267 SMI...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2005 Mazda 3 Sedan
I see you were reviewing hitches on our site, so I think perhaps you're asking about a hitch receiver for your 2005 Mazda 3 sedan to allow trailer towing, rather than a towbar, which is the term for the device used to tow a car behind a motorhome, such as # BX7380 from Blue Ox. We do offer light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches from Draw-Tite and Curt that fit all models of the 2005 Mazda 3, and I suggest the Draw-Tite # 24816 for its lower price and no-drill installation. I linked an...

  • Components Needed To Flat-Tow 1993 Mazda Miata Behind Motorhome
You sure can flat-tow your 1993 Miata behind your motorhome. Since we only offer Roadmaster base plates for your vehicle you have a couple options. I recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit, part # 711-4. If you decide you want to go with the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, part # BX7380, you will need the RoadMaster Base Plate to Blue Ox Tow Bars Adapter, part # RM-033. Then you will need the Roadmaster Tow Bar Quick Disconnect Kit, part # RM-201. If you decide this is too many components...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Actually when you flat tow a vehicle you want to have the steering wheel unlocked so that it can turn freely when the tow vehicle is turning. Otherwise the front tires would scrub and put a lot of strain on the steering of the vehicle and the flat towing components. You will need to consult the owners manual of your Wrangler to determine what procedures are recommended when flat towing your vehicle. For a base plate kit you would want the part # BX1126 which would work well with the...

  • Difficulty Folding Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar BX7380 Into Storage Position
It sounds like your tow bar's vertical storage bracket (on the shank) may have a bit of extra powder coated finish that is making the first-time use of the Alpha # BX7380 a little bit tough. You should be fine to give the stud a gentle tap with a rubber or wood mallet to coax it into place in the slot. This should only be necessary once for the initial installation. You can also try simply rotating the arm assembly back and forth (both left-to-right and vertically) to help loosen up...

  • How Much Tongue Weight Does a Tow Bar Apply to Motorhome Hitch
Correct, when flat towing a vehicle 4-wheels-down the only actual weight on the hitch will be that of a portion of the tow bar's weight. Some of the tow bar weight will be on the vehicle's front end so only a portion will be on the hitch side. Most of the better motor-home-mounted tow bars like the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7380 weigh about 40-lbs so say half of this will be seen by the hitch as tongue weight.
