Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring - RO54FR

Smart diodes allow a motorhome that is towing a car to use that car's rear lights if the car has variable voltage LED lights. Unlike regular wiring diodes, smart diodes activate only the intended circuit - brake lights or tail lights.

Features:

  • Smart diodes allow a motorhome to power a towed car's lights
  • Works with variable voltage LED tail lights
  • Requires wiring and wiring supplies (sold separately)
  • Quantity: 2 diodes
  • Made in the USA
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Smart diodes allow a motorhome that is towing a car to use the vehicle's rear lights, provided it uses variable voltage tail lights. Variable voltage tail lights use the same wire to power the brake lights and tail lights. They do this by using a 12-volt signal for brakes and a 9-volt signal for tail lights.

If a regular wiring diode is used with variable voltage tail lights, then the bulb will light up as though the vehicle is braking whenever the tail lights are on. That is, you can't tell the difference between the brake lights and running lights. Smart Diodes correctly modulate the voltage to activate only the intended circuit. The result is vehicle lighting that looks and functions as intended.

Great service and great job keeping us updated with the transit. We will definitely shop here again! Thank you.

by:

I had to develop a method to make them work for my 2015 Ford Edge SEL.

by:

Worked as advertised.

by:

Easy company to do business with.

by:

They work great and are a nice compact size. However, the instructions on the packaging is different than what is shown on the actual device leading to confusion.

by:

The dealer installed the wrong diodes for our tow set-up and our lights never worked properly. Looked on etrailer and found a how-to video that explained the problem, ordered this product (the correct diodes), and now everything works just as it should.

by:

There needs to be more clarity on which ones are needled to work with vehicles. I ordered the kit that has more diodes. After opening the kit and called the help line and was told it will work. So I even emailed asking to order the smart diodes if they could discount them because I already opened the package on fist order and I could still use the rest of wiring. No response so I just ordered the right ones. There is no room for more than one diode.

by:

Great service, when I called they were very helpful

by:

installed fairly easy ,once i got wiring diagram for 2020 jeep gladiator/with LED lights LED tail lights need smart diodes ,not 4 reg diodes

  • Is Lower Voltage Output Expected From RV Taillight Input
According to Roadmaster, the 1.8V reading is in the acceptable range on your # RO54FR. The smart diode has built in resistors which take the voltage down low like that. It gets especially low for the LED version since it takes very little to power an LED light. Once you install it on your vehicle you will find that everything works as intended.

  • Smart Diodes Needed For Flat Towing A 2021 Chevy Spark With Incandescent Tail Lights
Hi Mike, The Roadmaster Smart Diode # RO54FR is designed for use specifically with LED tail lights so if your towed vehicle has incandescent bulbs you'll need part # RO34FR instead. These should properly read your motorhome and vehicle traffic signals to display the signals correctly through your incandescent tail lights.

  • What Diodes Are Required For Flat Towing a 2023 Ford F-150?
Your 2023 Ford F-150 will require variable voltage diodes. We have them for LED Tail Lights # RO54FR or Incandescent Tail Lights # RO34FR. You can use these diodes in place of the ones included with the RoadMaster BlackHawk 2 All Terrain Combo Towing Kit # RM-9243-3.

Yes, the standard diodes like the Roadmaster Hy-Power Diode # RM-790 will work with constant voltage LED lights. The Roadmaster Smart Diodes for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights # RO54FR you were looking at are designed for use on variable voltage LED tail lights, which on typically found in Jeeps with ParkSense Proximity Sensors. If you provide me with the year/make/model of the vehicle you're wanting to flat tow I'd be happy to find the correct components to get you out on the road.

  • How To Power A Third Brake Light With Diode Wiring While Flat Towing
The reason the third brake light isn't coming on is because the Roadmaster Wiring Kit with Smart Diodes for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights # RM47ZR is only being wired to the just the tail lights. To get the third brake light to activate you would need to splice in a jumper wire between the third brake light and the the "RV Brake In" on the diode. You would need an additional Smart Diode # RO54FR for the third brake light and essentially wire it the same as one of your tail lights....

Variable voltage tail lights use the same wire for the brake signal and running lights instead of the standard turn/brake wire setup. All the 7 to 6-way umbilicals we offer like # RM-146 use 16 gauge wire, however the # RM-146 meets the rest of your parameters, it's manufactured in the USA and has metal plugs on the ends. Unfortunately we don't offer bonded 4 wire in 14 gauge, although we do offer it in 16 gauge as part # 16-4B-1, which is sold by the foot.
