Note: For applications that have separate lighting, this kit will cause your brake lights to function as both brake and turn signal lights. A wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes (RM-792) will be needed if you want to retain separate turn and brake signals.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system". When you hook up for flat towing using this kit, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this kit wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

We have towed our Jeep almost 2,000 miles since installing the recommended parts from etrailer and it has worked perfectly on every connect and disconnect along the way. Tows beautifully, even at 70 mph. Excellent customer service and helpful videos from these folks. Would recommend to anyone needing help with parts and guidance in towing their toad to give them a call.

Our system is still working perfectly a year later. Our Jeep is a 2018 Cherokee Trailhawk and while we’ve seen some RV forums talk about “death wobble”, we have never experienced this using these Roadmaster products towbar & baseplate. We tow the Jeep with our 39’ Class A gasser and hardly know its back there. Even on sharp corners the Jeep follows perfectly and no binding. Connecting or disconnecting takes maybe 5 – 7 minutes. Then check all of our lights, make sure the Jeep is in neutral wbrakes off and we’re on our way. The braking system that we installed purchased from etrailer is the “Stay-n-Play Duo”. I would recommend that to anyone looking for easy operation. The installation time was a bit lengthy and involved but once completed makes all of your towing trips much easier. Just the flip of a switch and the braking system is ready for towing. No portable unit to lug around and adjust each time you tow your vehicle. The etrailer folks made the perfect recommendations for our needs and everything has worked GREAT!

I ordered this kit to get me a heavy duty coiled cable with room to use one input as a dedicated power supply from the bus to then be sent to the towed battery to keep it charged going down the road. the diodes i chose not to use, as i have a hopkins plug and play kit on the way, that will marry up the 6 pin fitting I just needed the cable with the 7 to 6 adapters, it was the best price for the need :)

Running this wiring on my Wrangler 4 door is a bit of work, aside from that the wire/plug setup has gone 20 thousand miles now and no issues, works well. I am also running the trickle charger through this connector/cable a separate item just wanted to mention it is easy enough to use with this. On a side note, on my RV i had to fix the plug wiring, they had it wrong from factory. So if you get funny light behavior after hooking this up, check your vehicle wiring for accuracy, especially on RV's it is all hand done and mistakes happen.

I ran out of time to install this myself, so I had it done by a trusted Auto repair shop. While they had not done this specific kit before, they did comment that it was more complex than they had expected. They also installed the base plate and breakaway switch for the supplemental break and took about 10 hours in a fully equipped auto shop. The estimate the next one will take about 5 hours and only charged for that. This leads to a couple of points. 1. If you choose to do this in your typical home garage, plan on a day or two. 2. Once installed properly, it is a really slick system.

I have a problem with this part. Towing at night time the head light mode seems to back fees into the Colorado truck and set off ABS check engine light. Also activates the windshield wipers after towing for a while.

Hi Robert, Thanks for your feedback! I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster and this is the solution he provided: Check the wires at the taillights and make sure that they are on the correct wire. I have the colors for the taillights and brake lights. Taillights would be a Grey wire and the brake lights should be an orange wire. He should install the Diodes in between any plug and the light its self. Sometimes when you tap into after the plug, the plug feeds back into the cartruck.

Easy to follow instructions! Installed on a 2011 Mini Cooper S hatchback. Hardest part was figuring out what wires went to what bulb on the Mini. Once I got that squared away, install was a snap! I did mount the 6 round plug socket to the Mini's front license plate bracket. Not a great spot. May switch location or go with a 7 round to flat 5 coiled wire.

Even the wire colors were right for the '19 Cherokee T-hawk! The T-hawk is high enough so n inch or two of jacking allows access to run the wire aft, behind coverplates, etc. I cleaned the diode attach points with alcohol to aid adnesion of the tape. Suggest using a quality wire strip/crimp tool. Having no hitch, the rear bumper cover has 4 100mm bolts on the bottom lip. Removal allows pulling it away to run the 'crossing' wires, easily , hidden and secured.

Some challenges. The plug-in to the vhicle is not holding and making a connection, despite a new cord. Imagine, this, a heavy rock must be attached to the plug so all lights operate. eTrailer support is great.

The wiring kit was perfect and everything you need is there. I would have rated it a five, except that the multi-colored length of wire that comes with the kit was just barely--and I mean just barely--long enough for my application. If I had cut the ends even a quarter-of-an-inch shorter I would not have had enough wire to complete the job without splicing additional wire in. My only complaint is that the length of wire that comes in the kit is for small or short cars only. This is the second wiring kit that I bought. The first one was a coupe of years ago and was for a Ford F-150 pickup. In that application the wire was not long enough to run from the front of the pickup to the rear and I had to splice extra wire in to make it work. As long as you know that up front, then the rest of the wiring kit works great and the directions are very good.

4 flat wire was just enough as we had to adjust the routing to go bumper to bumper. Another 3' of wire would really make this an easy 5 star. The diodes are the best and easiest addition to prevent feedback. E-trailer video was an asset!!

2016 Jeep Wrangler

Towbar wiring system arrived within 4 days of placing my order. This 7 to 6 wire system is an upgrade to the simpler 4 wire plugs I've used in the past and will allow me to add on a battery charge line or brake system later on. The demonstration video was indispensable in hooking up the wiring and diodes. Though running and connecting the wiring does take longer than a 10 minute video. Now I can tow my 2016 Jeep Wrangler behind my RV.

The wiring kit was installed on a 2020 Jeep JL Sport S. I really appreciate the ordering process and quick shipping of etrailer. The Roadmaster 7-6 wire cable is heavy duty and the coiled design keeps it from dragging on the ground. On the etrailer website there is there is a Q&A segment that has a flowchart to see if you need a brake light relay kit. It states that if you get a brake light with the ignition off you need the kit. I finally learned that the Jeep JL goes to sleep about 5 minutes after the ignition is turned off- so you do not have to use a brake light kit on the Jeep JL.

Nice to get this all in a kit for you initial set up on a toad. Good quality plug cord. I added 2 diodes so I could do my turn signals separate from the brake lights and my toad (CR-V) tail lights all work as if the car was on its own.

Installed on 2019 Jeep Trailhawk for Duo brake system so it was part of the completing that process that included the DUO. Installed Roadmaster Direct Connect base plate, Duo Brake systems to be used with Falcon All Terrain- The system has been great so far after one year in service. The total install for everything probably took me 25-30 hours, working on it over several days. Removal of brand Jeep quarter panel and front end grill was a little nerve wreaking, but easy install on tow plates. The brake and electrical work used the other 60% of the time on this job. I would consider myself to have intermediate skills for automotive repair activity. The slicing of the various electrical brake light system wires was a little challenging to due access in the front end and rear brake light housing. The video's from etrailer.com was very helpful in completing the process from start to finish ( although I had to watch it a number of times as I completed each portion of the install) Note - The jeep brake light wiring will be connected to a plug in receptacle installed at the front of the jeep. Where the coil wire from the RV that plugs into this installed receptacle can become loose from plugging /unpluging the coil wire. The pins can be pushed back thru that rubber housing easily if extreme caution isn't used each time and over time can loose contact with the coil connector. They should improve the plastic sheath that covers the backside of the pins in that receptacle so they cannot be pushed thru the back side.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

One year ago I purchased the equipment to tow my Jeep Grand Cherokee 4 flat behind my motorhome from etrailer. I received the items within 4 days, and was able to do the install myself thanks to the fantastic instructional videos provided by etrailer. I have towed it from Iowa to Colorado, and several shorter trips. It is easy to hook up/unhook and tows fantastic. I went with the Roadmaster Sterling tow bar as well as the roadmaster crossbar with removable arms. I would HIGHLY recommend this setup! I also put the roadmaster diode wiring set in the Jeep to use the tail lights. Works flawless! I have used etrailer for several items and have always been completely satisfied. Preston was super helpful in helping me choose the best equipment for my application! Can't go wrong with etrailer!

  • Tow Bar Wiring For 2020 Jeep Gladiator that Has Install Video Available
While we don't have a plug and play style of tow bar wiring for your 2020 Jeep Gladiator we do have a really great kit that we had the chance to install in a 2020 Jeep Gladiator just like yours that I attached an install video of that will walk you through the entire process. • Replacement 7-Wire to 6-Wire Adapter for Roadmaster Wiring Kit RM-15267
It sounds like you just need the coiled 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil connector adapter from the # RM-15267, for which you can use the Hopkins Endurance Flex-Coil Trailer Connector Adapter w/ Nite-Glow - 7-Way to 6-Pole - 8' Long # HM47053. If you wanted an exact Roadmaster replacement you'll want to use the Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7. Either one of these would work for this application and would not require any soldering of connections.

  • Running Lights Not Working on 2018 GMC Sierra With Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Wiring Kit
First of all, thank you for taking precautions to dinghy tow your 2018 GMC Sierra as safely as possible, and I think we can help you out with the issue you are having with the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267 and Brite-Lite Wiring Converter # RM-732. • Can 2013 Fiat 500 with Separate Taillights be Wired for Flat Towing with Diodes for Combined
Your situation is a very common one and the solution you proposed is the easiest and most popular solution. Like you mentioned you'd be wiring up the separate taillights to function like combined ones. You'd need a total of 4 diodes which we have that as a 4 pack with part # RM-794. I attached the correct diagram you'd need to use for your application.

  • Is Mopar Flat-Tow Wiring Kit Needed for 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
Yes. You will need to purchase and install Mopar flat-tow wiring kit 68321424AB before flat towing your vehicle, as per Jeep tech bulletin (08-010-17). This kit is available at your local Chrysler and Jeep dealership. I've attached a photo of the bulletin to assist. Basically there is a severe shake and/or bounce that some refer to as "death wobble". This isn't a mechanical issue but rather a wiring solution. This harness solves the issue so you can flat tow safely. If you need...

  • Recommended Wiring Harness to Flat Tow a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL LED Lights
The LED lights on your 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL use the same wiring harnesses available for incanescent lights. I've linked our selection for you. I like to recommend the diode kit, part # RM-15267, because it installs a 6-way at the front of the Jeep which may be handle for other functions.
